I had a great experience at Computerland. My 2016 Macbook Pro's screen went black and stopped working out of the blue, and I booked an appointment with them through Apple Service. My Applecare was expired and I was out of warranty, so I knew this would be out of pocket. When I talked with them, I explained that I wasn't interested in doing the repair if it was more than a certain amount, because the computer was already 4 years old. They completely understood (and agreed), and we agreed they would call me to confirm before any repairs. In fact, they did call later the day I dropped it off to confirm they could go ahead with a repair that was significantly less than the ceiling I had mentioned. I got it back a few days later, and I'm using it now to type this review. The repair is great, and my rig feels and looks like new! Their COVID protocols seem good, and they were quick, communicative, understanding, and super helpful. I would definitely recommend them! read more

Took my laptop to Computerland of Berkeley during Quarantine after an unfortunate screen break. Service was prompt and friendly. My laptop was repeating letters and spaces, an issue covered under Apple's Keyboard Service Program. Scheduling service at Computerland, an Authorized Apple Service Provider was faster than at Apple service. Also, at Computerland with their expedited service option, I didn't need to leave my laptop. At a brief appointment, they confirmed the diagnosis and while waiting for parts to arrive, I had use of my Mac. The repair was completed between 12-4pm. I used Computerland's services to replace the battery on my MacBook Pro. I was very impressed by the whole process. Apple Support actually made the appointment for me, but once I got there, their service was top notch. The intake was very quick. They immediately tested the battery on my MacBook and confirmed that it needed to be replaced. They ordered the replacement for me as well. On the day the replacement part arrived, they called me in the morning to have me drop off the laptop. Once I dropped it off, they had it fixed and ready for me in 3 or 4 hours. They seem to have done a great job. My MacBook is working better than it has in a long time. read more

I stopped by this shop to buy a new battery and charger for my 2007 Macbook. The guys at the shop were very helpful and made sure that my laptop was working as it should before I left. They also checked to see if my laptop qualified for a free keyboard replacement due to a recall that Apple put out a few years ago (I had never heard of this recall before). The place where my wrists rest on my laptop keyboard is chipped and it turns out that it does qualify for a free replacement! They didn't have to mention this recall to me, but they did anyway. This exemplifies the helpfulness of the employees here. Also, the prices are pretty reasonable. You could get the parts I purchased cheaper online, but not that much cheaper. Besides, when I bought from them, I had the advantage of the helpful employees. read more

To paraphrase someone else's review, they "underpromised and overdelivered." My laptop got beer spilled on it, and I went into Computerland unhopeful about prospects for the laptop. They were personable, professional, and straightforward from the start. I really appreciated their honesty and forthcomingness, both for prospects for repair and how much it might cost. I found them exremely fair in their pricing scheme: $160 if they could clean and fix it, only $80 if they did all the work but then couldn't get it to work; $250 for a more in-depth deep-clean + total overhaul, or still $80 if even after all of that they couldn't get the laptop to work. And they guarantee their labor for 30 days! My laptop is working again good as new. Would definitely recommend going here! read more

If I could give this place 10 stars, I so would. I had water damage on my hard drive (corrosion? something like that). I had opened my laptop last Friday afternoon, and saw that the mouse was not working. I restarted it, thinking that it was just one of those small things that happen once in a while with Macs. But the mouse was still not working; I restarted my Mac 3-4 times, until the 4th time, the screen went completely black, and then a floating picture of a folder and a question mark popped up. I asked friends on Facebook and everyone reassured me that the hard drive had fallen out and I just had to go to the Apple Store and ask them to reseat it. I did that, a few hours later - I went to 4th Street, where they booked my appointment to the following Monday, saying they were busy. Discouraged, I booked it to late Monday afternoon; I went back that day, and found that it was a more complicated problem than just a reseating. They told me that the liquid contact on the hard drive had corroded it and they'd need to replace my hard drive immediately. They told me the flat fee was $775. Because my budget is really tight as an undergrad, I asked about other 3rd parties that offered the same service. The Apple employee was kind enough to give me various suggestions, one of them Computerland. I went to Computerland the following morning on Tuesday, and left my laptop there after the guy working there struck a deal with me: I would pay $80 upfront at that moment, and come back in 4-5 days when everything's fixed - if my Mac is fixed by then, I would pay an additional $390 for the service; if it's not, I would not pay $390 and just go onwards to some place else. I didn't opt for data retrieval either - I did not have the financial means to afford that, and also I tend to email myself all the files I save (Type A at its finest). The guy mentioned the problems and whatnot with me, and was super transparent with how the process would go and what the pricing would be for what respective step. I got a call the next day at 2:00 pm, saying that it was ready for pick up. 2:00 PM, the next day!! The turn around time was literally less than 30 hours for me!!! I went, tested out everything, and saw that ALL MY DATA WERE STILL IN MY FRIGGING MAC. And the best thing? They only took $310. THREE ONE ZERO. I got my Mac in time for my big presentation for one of my classes tomorrow, all my data in one place (thank you JESUS), and everything met my budget. The guy helping me was Tri - he was very polite and respectful as the noob like me, asked him how an external hard drive worked and what backing up my data meant via Time Machine. He let me test out everything before letting me take it back home. TL;DR: The service here is great. They're very transparent with pricing and wow - still super impressed with their turn-around time (less than 30 hours!). They get the job done. read more

My little brother has been working very hard on building his computer by himself, but towards the end when he was almost finished he couldn't figure out the last few technical problems it had. We went in to see if they could possibly help. For 1 it's a very relaxed and professional area when you walk in, it has 5(definitely going on 6) plagues on the wall from the past 5 years of great service certified by Apple. The technicians there were very quick at fixing the couple of problems the computer had, and responded the next day to inform me that it was up and ready to work. Quick, easy, and affordable. My MacBook Air stopped working.... completely. Apple's genius bar said it would cost ~$350 and 3-5 days to replace the motherboard and I'd lose all my files (because Apple doesn't do data backups). Computerland of Berkeley does do data backups, but first they clean your computer and run diagnostics. After cleaning, my computer was fixed (there was no motherboard problem). Cost $90. Computer returned working (with files!) in 2 days. Very friendly and professional. read more

Two nights ago, my 2013 MacBook Air froze while I was working. I couldn't get the cursor to move and, after an hour and a half on the phone, Apple Support couldn't do anything either. They suggested Computerland of Berkeley, so yesterday I brought my computer in and told them my sorry tale. Tony, the very personable front desk guy, took the time to open my laptop while I waited and showed me all the dust, dirt and (somehow!) cat hair that had gotten inside. He told me to leave it for a few days to see if they could fix it. I'm a freelance writer so my heart sank at that thought, but I paid the $40 diagnostic fee and left. This afternoon, not 24 hours later, I got a call from Tri, politely telling me that he was almost finished and I could stop by today and pick it up. When I came in, there was my computer, clean inside and out and working like a charm! The final charge was very reasonable. I had a great experience with Computerland. After a almost a year of heavy use, my Mac Air had gotten a ding in the screen and one of its USB ports was tweaked out of alignment. Meanwhile, my older, backup Mac wasn't working at all -- turned out to have an exploded battery. I'm a freelance consultant who is completely dependent on my laptops, and I was in a panic. The Computerland staff repaired the old Mac very quickly for a very reasonable price, and convinced Apple to fix the newer one for free under warranty. I'd give a negative rating if I could. Dropped my Toshiba laptop off. A bit of water had fried the motherboard, and I also wanted my trackpad replaced which had entirely stopped working prior to this, and the backlight for my keyboard replaced. They had the laptop for weeks. I had to call multiple times to get any updates. Seemed like the guy they handed it off to just wasn't working on it. After about a month they said they had it for me. I picked it up, was dumbly trustworthy, and didn't test it till I left. It wouldn't even turn on. Brought it back, apparently they missed half the service request and only replaced the trackpad, and clearly never tested it. Several more weeks, and they finally have it fixed for me, minus some data recovery that my friend was going to do. Oh, and it took them about 10 minutes to find my power cable. Fast forward, I've had the laptop back in operation for about three weeks, and now the new trackpad is failing. Are you kidding me? I'll be asking for my money back and finding someone who is competent. read more

I stupidly spilled red wine across the middle of my Macbook Pro, which promptly shorted out and turned off. The Genius Bar couldn't see me for 4 days, so I booked an appointment with Computerland. I was a little nervous because I had only used Genius Bar/Apple repairs before now. They were able to diagnose the issue the next morning, open and clean the spill, and replace the two damaged parts within about four hours. They called and communicated info to me several times and explained what they would do and how much it would cost. A same-day clean and repair only set me back a couple hundred dollars, and I KNOW (from unfortunate past experience... yes, I'm clumsy) that it would have taken longer and been more expensive had I waited for an Apple appointment. The next time I inevitably damage an expensive electronic device, I will have no qualms about bringing it here for repair. read more

My new MacBook Air was having issues with the space bar constantly repeating itself even with the repeat settings turned off. I did a NVRAM reset and that didn't work. Apple is currently having a Keyboard Service Program for the newer models of the keyboards because of issues that some MacBooks are exhibiting. Also, this place is an Apple Authorized Service Provider. I went in on a Tuesday at 3:40 PM, with an appointment. I filled out the paperwork and I was out the door in 5 minutes. Super quick! I'm sure they will service you whether or not you have an appointment. They took my MacBook and the next day at 5:30 PM, I got a call that my MacBook Air was available for pick up. This meant that they sent it to repair the day of! They replaced my keyboard and I think my trackpad. My space bar doesn't repeat anymore. All fixed! Really recommend this place. Make sure to bring your receipt if you're picking up your MacBook or at least know your order #. read more

The display of my Dell Inspiron got fuzzy and then the computer shut down. I thought it might take too much time asking for Dell's official client service and so went to Computerland of Berkeley for help. They charged me $40 for a diagnosis which took more than 24 hours. Two things were marked on the diagnosis report they gave me: 1 "Motherboard problem"; 2 "Computer still under warranty, call Dell service". I called Dell and described to them the problem my computer had, 5 days later they sent a nice guy to my house and repaired my device within 15 mins. It's the screen which was malfunctionning and Dell's staff just replaced it with a new one. There had nothing to do with the motherboard at all!!! So 40 dollars for a wrong report and teaching me to call official client service, I really feel humiliated. read more

On the advice of someone on the CL Apple forum, I took my malfunctioning Macbook Pro to ASSP Computerland of Berkeley instead of the Apple store. Compared to Apple, the experience was like night and day. When I'd taken computers to Apple before, I'd had to wait weeks before even getting a phone call with the diagnosis, and sometimes longer to get it fixed. Not to mention the assembly-line, impersonal aspect of Apple repair. Computerland diagnosed the problem within two days, ordered the needed part, tracked the part's shipment, let me take the computer home until the part was due to arrive, notified me immediately when the part came in, fixed it that day and told me the precise time at which I could pick it up, knew me by name and sight, and were in constant communication. It was extremely efficient, personalized, and competent service. I highly recommend them in general and over Apple repair in particular. read more

I feel that for any college student on a my-laptop-is-finally-fixed afterglow, 5-star ratings are imminent to the savior no matter what. That being said, I would like to marginally believe I have good reason to give the wonderful folks at this place the stars above, in all their blood, sweat, and tears glory. I had the unfortunate experience of my plane landing really badly - and by badly, I mean everyone jumped a good foot - and my poor laptop was on the ground, since the plane peeps wouldn't let me hold it. Short story even shorter, when I got back, my laptop's fan started going haywire. It buzzed and vibrated the entire laptop from one end of the keyboard to the other. Whatever the case was, I knew the fan had to be replaced or at least readjusted: a standard mechanical error. Since I have two left thumbs and a tendency to shock people that would shame a Pikachu, I opted to get this handled by a professional. So I went to a shop with pretty good reviews, they checked it out, and kindly told me that the fan itself would be 45 dollars and the labor would be 160. 160 labor fee? Am I paying for you to tow my car? Needless to say, I chickened out of that with my wallet crying. Let it be said that my laptop was maybe 600 dollars with the tax included. No way in hell was I going to pay a third of its cost to fix a fan of all things. But I called other places and they seemed to all generally agree on that criteria: 150-160, fan would be 40-50. That, however, all changed when I called Computer Land. They listened to my request and told me that the labor would be 100 (I have a laptop that needs to be fully taken apart to get to the fan) and that the fan would be 30. 130? From 200+? I was still hesitant (and despairing that none of my more technologically dextrous friends were back in Berkeley), but the fan at this point was starting to vibrate where my HDD was. It also helped that they were incredibly friendly and understood my request to keep the laptop until the fan arrived since the laptop was essential for work. Fast forward to a few days later, the fan arrived, they gave me a call, I turned in my laptop, and within not even two hours, I got it back and the fan was quieter than Southside restaurants during winter vacation. Case in point with an egregiously long preface, they're reasonably priced compared to other places, they get the work done timely and wonderfully well, and they're really nice to boot! While I still think paying 100+ for a fan repair is/was ridiculous, they did it at a price that was the best along with excellent service and performance. Wonderful people. read more

I am sad to put a bad review because they were very nice and polite. I brought my 2007 imac to repair 6 months ago. It looked like it was a hard drive problem (who knows!). The repair was very expensive and I ask if they didn't have a most recent computer to sell me. They offered me a most recent imac (they told me 2009) for 600$ + my old computer. I accepted and left with my "new" computer. 4 months later ( warranty of 3 months of course), the computer crashed. I brought it back.it looked like there were a power supply issue: 160 dollars more!! I asked again the reference of the computer to check myself the price on ebay. Actually this "new" computer was also from 2007-2008. I went to Apple store: NO power supply issue, only the old cable that I was using: 10 box. Just got a call from John at Computerland about this review. To his credit, he offered to refund my money for the original fix. On the downside - he stayed in denial mode, saying that it must have been a mis-communication, that his rep didn't hang up on the Apple Store, that they don't operate that way, that he wasn't there, that that would be 'crazy'. Even when I said that no, there was no mis-communication, he never once validated my experience. At the end, he backtracked and said that of course they would review their processes and made adjustments where needed --but what I took away was that he wanted me to change my review.
