So the reason I made it to Friday in one piece this week is because of Computer Courage. On Monday morning I went into my office, pushed the big on button on my desktop, and started to make my daily cereal and tea. Oddly, my dear desktop did not begin to sing it's little Bill Gate/Microsoft song. Uh, oh. Within a twenty minutes my dear tech-savvy friend had arrived to find me eating raisin brain and attempting to cope with the fact my professional life in a box was not turning on. He opened it up, found lava-like dust, and dangling heat sinks. Heat sinks? How about my heart sinks? Before he could begin explaining my options, I began to freak out. I needed my data. My data............... I called at 4:45PM and then actually received a call back at 4:57PM from the phenomenal Beth. She told me CC could come to me, or I could come to them in the AM. She told me everything was going to be okay. Ah, I went home and went to sleep. I could not even make eye contact with my desktop. The next morning I jumped out of bed and took my desktop to CC at MLK and Virgina (Bonus points for being in the neighborhood of my beloved Montessori elementary school as well as for having a SUPER diverse staff of techies--- yes so diverse, I, a Berkeley-borne and raised person, was impressed.). Beth told me it was okay to put the desktop down. (Yes, I was literally clutching it too my chest.) She said it maybe the power supply or the mother board and CC would call me as soon as they knew. The next day I just happened to be in the neighborhood at the BAR office. I stopped by and found Adam sitting with my dear desktop's remains. He reported the motherboard was melted, BUT the data was alright! Oh yeah! My data! My data! My data! (I promise, I promise I will back up for the rest of my life!) He popped it into a case. Computer Courage to the rescue - My girlfriend and I have now used Computer Courage twice, and have been more than satisfied each time. Our first experience with Computer Courage was short and sweet. My girlfriend's Mac was having wireless problems - it couldn't pick up wireless networks. We first took it to the Apple store, who wanted to charge $400 to resolve the problem! They gave us a confusing answer and didn't actually open up the computer to see what was wrong. I had a hunch there was an easier way. We brought the PowerBook to Computer Courage where the businesses owner (Adam) offered us his immediate attention. Instead of discussing large fees, Adam just opened the computer up to take a look. Within 3 minutes, he popped the wireless card out and just pushed it back in, suggesting it might have been a loose connection. Adam then booted the laptop up, checked the connections (twice), gave us a bunch of advice about wireless security and what to do if the problem returned, and sent us on our way for $25! Then lightning struck twice. Two days later own PC laptop started to give me problems. It slowed down, and suspicious "virus removal" messages started popping up. Within a week, I couldn't even boot the machine. I called Computer Courage and they told me to just bring it on in. They asked me a series of simple questions to determine the problem. It turns out they have two ways of solving problems like this - the "bandaid" and the "surgery". Essentially, the bandaid can handle most but not all troublesome situations. The surgery is a simple, fixed price service that handles almost any computer problem you could have. The Computer Courage team walked me through my options, explaining clearly what they thought was wrong with my computer, and discussing the pros and cons of both solutions. They spent at least 20 minutes with me before I made any commitment. In the end, I opted for the "surgery". It costs a little more but has numerous advantages, including the fact that my computer now runs faster than it did when I bought it. They saved all of my data, including my school work and my pictures, and had the computer back to me in 2 days, for $250. Also- I didnt know you that free anti-virus software exists. I had been paying too much for Norton for years. I can't say enough good things about Computer Courage and I recommend them to all the Yelpers out there. read more

Brought in my desktop and laptop for repair. Desktop had a nasty virus on it and I thought the charger input on the laptop was bad. Fixed up my desktop beautifully and Beth gave me some great pointers on how to keep it running fast all the time. Turns out the power cable for the laptop was bad so they helped me order a replacement. The folks who work there are pretty friendly and didn't talk me to like I was an idiot (although when it comes to computers, I pretty much am!). I was on a business trip to San Francisco when my (usually reliable) IBM Thinkpad slowed to a crawl and started trying to sell me antivirus software. I knew something was wrong, as it kept pushing for a credit card number, so I consulted old faithful (yelp.com) and called Computer Courage. I dropped an external hard drive with 7,000+ files and the consequence of my clumsiness was an inaccessible drive and corrupted data. The information was critical to my work and I would have been lost without it. I contacted a number of data recovery specialists and the recovery price ranged from $2,700 - $6,000 due to the damage and volume. Now I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't have that kind of money sitting around and I was REALLY worried. I found Computer Courage here on Yelp and really liked what I read when I looked at the profile. A professional who decided a few years ago to walk away from the big corporate paychecks to start his own tech business. His website reflected that he understands many people don't have the financial flexibility to pay for tech service, data recovery, or to have new computers built as custom jobs and listed a number of items he would be willing to barter for if someone needed his help, but didn't have any money. I loved the business model, the respect for his customers, and his openness, so I reached out and asked him if he could recover my lost/corrupt data. We talked for quite a while as I explained what had happened and he asked a lot of questions to get a feel for the project. He told me he believed he could recover the data and, if he was wrong, there would be no charge regardless of the time he may need to invest on my behalf. I dropped off the hard drive and he immediately began working on the project. My half year old computer recently developed an irritating noise like an airplane engine. I poked around inside and figured the fan in the power supply was the culprit. I had replaced a power supply before, but all those leads coming out and going every which on this computer was too challenging. Wow. We have been working with Computer Courage for nearly 3 years now. We have always found them to be professional, personable, and efficient. Very easy to recommend. In fact, it turns out we share several of the same clients--and each of them also raves about Computer Courage. Xfinity recently sent us a new modem. Bitchen. It's faster, has a built-in router with a strong WiFi signal, and even looks purrty, standing all upright and proud with it's "oh yeah we're here in all our glory, but not so bright as to being annoying flashing lights." Trouble is it was causing conflicts with our home network. Everyone I spoke with explained how it wasn't their problem. Xfinity said they're only responsible for providing a working modem and it was so piss off. (Actually, that same outsourced dude in the Philippines upsold me an $80 second level support service, which was promptly refunded when the technician in the States confirmed that it did not apply to what I needed). Another component vendor whose device could not connect to the Internet remoted in, but got stuck with the modem settings and my work VPN requirements. My work sent me endless emails of gobbly gook opining about many things but having actual solutions for none. If only I knew a good, professional, affordable, reliable IT company I could just call. Days of wasted time go by. And then, as an afterthought my bonehead self realized I did know one. I emailed them at 12:22. Their senior network guy was here at our house at 2:56. He changed and resolved our various network settings in less than 10 minutes. Seriously. Then spent another 15-20 minutes troubleshooting a more complicated setting and finding a creative resolution. The band-aid would have been a cheaper way to go, ($50 to $150, he estimated), but even though I'm a pretty frugal student, the surgery was money well spent. Show me that my problem was with my cord and not my computer. 2. Search online for me to find where I could obtain a new cord and for how much. 3. The best thing that's happened to me in a good while was finding Computer Courage. I must be pretty unaware, as I go about my days, as they've been located right next to my office for a while but I only "found" them when my computer crashed and I lost all my files. To say that I am not tech-savvy is a major understatement, so imagine the panic when the damned machine crashed, refused to do what I wanted it to do and then, once I got it to boot-up, had lost all my files. The first was just to reset the Windows password since the cancel button does not actually cancel. The other 2 times were for virus recovery. We are sure happy with the work Computer Courage did for us. We are a small business with big computer issues and they got down to business solving our problems. On the subject of changes to their business model disappointing a former client: We went through growing pains many times in our 35 year existence and I can understand the necessity of losing some customers because our business practices needed to evolve. Our previous IT solution company oversold us on hardware, support contracts, unnecessary software, etc. We ended up with enough gear to host a "small business" of 100+ employees and client machines. There's 15 of us. Thing is, the other group failed to configure the virtual servers properly, wasting all the expensive hardware horsepower. The other group sold us proprietary Cisco routers and access points that cannot be reconfigured or upgraded without a licensed reseller. When something finally failed (as all things computer do), the urgent support call would be answered "sometime next week" by the other guys. Not sure how that can be considered acceptable when our on-site database and ALL BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS have stopped! This is when we called Computer Courage, got a great vibe, and discussed changing IT support providers. They found and fixed incorrectly configured things, and are working with our other IT projects. We even have an IT guy on staff who just needed help weeding out the other guys' needless complexity, and getting some uninterrupted help setting it all up for smooth sailing. The week of finals, my external hard drive died, and after reviewing the positive (and fully accurate) Yelp reviews for Computer Courage, I came frightened and panicked to their door cradling my hard drive. Beth was everything I could have asked for, straightforward, clear, realistic and so so kind, a rare quality indeed. Within the hour, Beth was on the case, and later I found out that my data was saved, and I would have my data transferred to a new hard drive (my spare) by the next day, for a very reasonable $100. I cannot give a high enough recommendation for Computer Courage. Not only are their repairs speedy, informed and cost effective, but the staff is incredible, and you leave with a overall good feeling, which is the last thing you expect in a time of computer tragedy. Thumbs up for computer courage. I discovered computer courage when I came home from a camping trip (where I could not be contacted) to discover that my wife's computer crashed. She discovered Computer Courage through both friends and Yelp and they helped her find a replacement laptop suitable for her budget and needs. They proceeded to service that computer and bring her data from the crashed computer to the new lap top (they also did quite a few extra things). I decided that I should probably upgrade my systems as I am down to one tablet PC and a very old desktop. Someday that tablet will crash and I'll have nothing the perform home inspection with. I went in and they helped me search options to replace all my tablets and my desktop and they wrote me an invoice of costs of the equipment and their services. Keep in mind, they are only helping me find equipment, they are not selling it so I feel like that help is unbiased. When I found that all equipment replacement and services will require that I save for a while, they offered an alternative. They restore my pile of unused tablet PCs and worked on my desktop so I can operate for another year or two until I can save for equipment replacement. Keep in mind, my equipment is old so that is a great feat. I have been using Fujitsu tablet PCs for 11 years and I never had one crash on me. The very day after all my old systems were restored where I had two nicely working tablets and a faster desktop computer, my remaining tablet crashed on an inspection. That has never happened to me before and If Computer Courage had not just completed my computer restoration, I would not have only lost revenue from that inspection but also for the next couple of days. The folks at Computer Courage were outstanding in their honest appraisal as far as what was wrong with my 8 yr old Shuttle computer (corrupt RAM and Windows XP) and advising me that it wasn't worth the cost to have it repaired. Instead they performed a data transfer to my back-up Mac PowerBook and made sure that any incompatibilities between the platforms and my iTunes library was resolved to the best of their ability. I was impressed with Computer Courage for two reasons: I first made contact with them to be coached on how to build my own website using Word Press. It was clear to me that Adam, the owner, was just as interested in building my computer knowledge as he would be building and managing my website. Computer Courage repaired my Sony Vaio laptop in just a couple of days!! They applied the diagnostic to the repair. They diagnosed the problems, and told me my options. The sound card was bad, but would require replacement of the mother board (not worth it.) So they ordered me a reasonably priced analog audio adapter, and now I have sound again. They also repaired the on/off switch. They also spent over 25 minutes with me, installing the audio device and ensuring that the sound worked through the new device. They were friendly, prompt and an overall excellent service. Easy to get to and also they have a parking lot. read more
