This review is for Communal's Saturday brunch, because I go at least every other week. I have tried and love all of the brunch options at Communal, but my favorite are the eggs benedict for a traditional brunch item, the deep fried french toast for my sweet tooth, and the pinestate when I'm extra hungry. I also love the coffee and mimosas offered with brunch. While the menu is enough to keep me coming back, I also love Communal because the staff there are some of the nicest you will ever meet. When my wife and I were first married (7 years ago) we lived in Provo and decided to treat ourselves one night we somewhat haphazardly decided upon going to Communal (it was election night 2012, of all nights, for some strange reason). It might sound like an exaggeration but it was literally one of the best dining decisions we (or I) have made ever. It still tops the list of the best restaurant experiences I've had. If I recall correctly we had deviled quail's eggs, a 1/2 chicken, and brown trout. Since it was just the two of us and it's served family style, we just shared with each other between the plates. It was all so good. Each bite was a new experience whether it was the first, tenth, or twentieth- the flavors never got boring or monotonous. Each bite was rich with flavor and allowed new discoveries within the palate expressed by the dish. I can't even begin with this place. It's amazing. Period. Thinking about going? Just go. It was FREAKISHLY good. Like first bite I was "mmmmm" -ing... we had their watermelon arugula salad, pork tenderloin, risotto and chocolate dessert. All of it was a 10/10 and then some. This was a delightful experience. Beautiful atmosphere, great staff, and lots of little touches that appreciated (like the server taking our leftovers to box them up). The brunch was delicious. The grapefruit was such a treat! All of the elements complemented each other beautifully and had a purpose. I was actually a little disappointed when I got to the last bite, because I didn't want it to be finished. My only suggestion is that we would have preferred to have the outer edge of the grapefruit scored; it would have made it a little easier to eat. The breakfast tacos- I can't remember what they were called and don't see them listed online- were also a favorite. Wouldn't have changed a thing. The biscuits and gravy were the only thing that seemed a little off. The biscuits themselves were super flaky and buttery, but the gravy wasn't my favorite. Still overall a wonderful breakfast. Great for something special, and I didn't think the prices were bad at all for the quality, atmosphere and portion sizes. read more

Communal is delicious! Such a pleasant experience every time I go. Personally, I enjoy their Saturday brunch more than going there for a dinner. Their bruleed grapefruit is amazing and I love their chile verde. I don't know what they do to the black beans, but they are out of this world. I would highly recommend this place! I was really excited to have date night here and when we got here, the waitstaff was so welcoming and nice! They told us the portions were for sharing so we should share an entree, we got the charcuterie board which was great, the cauliflower which was very oily, the mashed potatoes which were AMAZING, and the trout. We are brunch here and it was amazing. The service was fast and very home style type of food. I got the pine. It was very good. Their biscuit was cooked perfectly where it was crumbly in my mouth but not dry. All of the food at our table was good. I don't think we had a bad meal. It was kid friendly and they were super friendly. We had one little thing wrong with our food but they were quick to fix it. I would recommend it and go back. read more

Hit or miss. But one if the best places in Provo. Pork belly has always been solid so far. So I really hope they don't screw it up.

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Provo. It is actually better than any other place in my book! When I visit Salt Lake City, I always make the drive down to Provo, just so I can eat here!! They have never disappointed, and today was just proof of how amazing they are! The food is delicious!!! All fresh, locally sourced food that tastes incredible! The customer service is by far the best of all the other places in the area. Today was just further justification of this being my favorite place to eat. We arrived close to closing, and they happily seated our family. They took their time talking with my family, never once rushing us to order, even though the kitchen would be closing soon. When they found out our family was in the middle of a cross country move, not only did they take the time to talk with us about our plans, but they shared places they recommended, and they even surprised our family with an extra appetizer on the house. When we were the only family left in the restaurant, the Moana soundtrack was turned on for our girls. Oh, and when we went to leave, they had these amazing desserts ready for us to take home! Impressive fine dining experiences can feel few and far between in Provo. I was looking for a memorable place to bring my grandmother who is visiting from afar, and boy am I grateful that I decided to bring her to Communal. The ambience and decor feel elegant without being obtuse. Our waiter was polite and knowledgeable about their offerings, making recommendations what appealed to both our palates and dietary restrictions without hesitation. Food is served "family style" in loose courses, and everything we had was fresh and seasoned to perfection. I often judge a restaurant by if I feel the need to add salt or pepper--I assure you that adding either to these dishes would have been an insult to their integrity. I will be returning to Communal, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a culinary experience paired with a glass (or two) of wine. Cheers! read more

What a fabulous dinner! Unpretentious, but delicious food and excellent service. Prices are very reasonable. If we lived here (we're from Oakland), we would be regular diners. We saw some reviews that described Communal as "hipster". Uh ... no. Just fresh, carefully prepared and cooked food. The chefs know what they are doing. We had the roast chicken, broccolini with tahini sauce, fried polenta wedges, and some lovely Majorcan rosé. Our server Devlin was exceptional. He let me try the Willamette Valley pinot noir before I decide on the rosé. The polenta wedges were our favorite part of the meal, golden with a lovely green sauce. Do yourself a favor and eat here. Extra bonus: it's not too noisy! read more

Communal is an excellent restaurant. We took my parents and in laws there and were given a private room in the back to eat. The funeral potatoes are absolute heaven. Beet salad is delicious. Loved their ravioli, chicken, and short ribs. Really enjoyed this restaurant from start to finish. For dessert, the butterscotch pudding is to die for! read more

Meal starts with delicious complimentary rolls and soft whipped creamy butter. While traveling across country, researched and made reservations at Communal. It was absolutely delicious! The apple salad to the butterscotch pudding w/Oreos!!!! In addition to salad and dessert, we also ordered the hanger steak, broccolini, and mashed potatoes. All were perfectly prepared. It's an open kitchen so you can view chef working on food prep. Very nice and attentive wait staff. Very small restaurant and close seating if that's something that bothers you. Disappointed. I had high hopes, but it was such a letdown, especially for the price. Service was rude, uninformed and not helpful. Parking is a nightmare. After hearing lots of good things about communal we finally decided to give it a try. It was so delicious! The hanger steak was perfectly seasoned and juicy! The mashed potatoes were wonderfully fluffy and creamy, seriously some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. Even the broccolini was a pleasant surprise that I couldn't stop eating. The butterscotch pudding is a definite must have if you like dessert. I'm not normally a big butterscotch fan, but it had a light butterscotch taste and was whipped to perfection. read more

My office held a holiday dinner party here and we reserved our spot nearly a month in advance. We called in for a total of 27 of us and when we go there they decided to split us up. They wanted to put 20 of us on one table and 7 on another completely separate from everyone else. I understand why they wouldn't want to fit 27 people in such a small area, but I would have hoped they would have informed us that no more then a reservation for 25 could be accepted. We ended up having about 23 guests and fit around one long table but we were very close together. So if you have a large party, I'd say anymore then 24-25 people is on the verge of too big. The food was good and the concept was neat, but I wish we had more of the starters and side dishes to go with the entrees. Some of the servers did begin taking dishes with food still on then while we were eating so it was a little annoying to have them in the way while we tried to eat. Got to the restaurant and they said they had tried to call me (never left my number on the reservation) that someone rented out the whole restaurant and we no longer had our reservation for dinner....really disappointed in this service and communication!!!! read more

Menu changes but my family of 5 had a lovely lunch of: beet salad w/pistachio brittle, chicken sandwich (it was huge!), hamburger, BLTA & some kind of yummy asparagus appetizer that I'm shocked my kids devoured. Only complaints are 1)that the place was empty (just before they closed lunch hrs) & it took the host a long time to set up a table that appeared to be 90% set up already. Hungry impatient kids maybe made that wait worse. 2) they burnt something & since the kitchen was right there in the open it took a while for the smell to go away. My wife and I had been very excited to try Communal and finally got around to it last week to try their fall menu. The service was great, but sadly the food wasn't quite as good as we'd hoped. The chicken and dumplings was pretty good but the dumplings were frozen/cold in the middle still. The sweet potato side was delicious but both it and the cauliflower were lacking salt. The starter salad wasn't anything to write home about. THAT BEING SAID... the whipped feta starter had to be one of the most amazing things I've eaten this year. I was skeptical reading the description but my wife and I LOVED it. The maple crème brûlée we got for dessert was also very delicious. read more

We had a group of 11 for dinner and were delighted to have an intimate private room. Service was attentive and friendly. Menu is designed to have meals served family style which become tricky if you're going to split the bill especially if you've got folks with dietary restrictions and some ordering adult beverages in other words not a simple split the check by 11. We ended up pairing off and figuring it out on our own. Food was served fresh. The trout was well done but tasty so I was told. The pesto pasta was ok but not something I'd order again. Too much oil and pasta too chewy. Highlights were the beet salad and the funeral potato (order it)! No beer on tap. Overall glad we gathered there! read more

Wanted to check out the Provo food scene and my boss took me here. Ordered the communal burger which was very tasty, fresh, and complimented by the salad and deep fried onions. Servers were very polite, extremely loved the rustic but clean interior. Only problem with the burger, it was overly charred but otherwise very solid. Next time definitely gonna try the fried chicken (heard it's quite good). Inclusive bathrooms here and a very diverse staff to help customers with any needs with food, drinks or seating. read more

Always love visiting communal. The new menu this summer is great. We shared the celery salad, trout and potatoes au gratin, with panacotta for dessert! It was all amazing.
