My wife and I had been very excited to try Communal and finally got around to it last week to try their fall menu. The service was great, but sadly the food wasn't quite as good as we'd hoped. The chicken and dumplings was pretty good but the dumplings were frozen/cold in the middle still. The sweet potato side was delicious but both it and the cauliflower were lacking salt. The starter salad wasn't anything to write home about. THAT BEING SAID... the whipped feta starter had to be one of the most amazing things I've eaten this year. I had a really bad week, my supervisor was being simply awful to me on my birthday and my soon-to-be supervisor felt bad when he heard. So he gave me a free night out on him at communal. He sent me a gift card and me and my hubby went off to enjoy the night, 2 weeks later. Communal was the experience I needed. We ordered a bottle of Cabernet and two of their specials. The food was so delectable and the atmosphere was so welcoming. The flavor of everything lingered on my tongue and in my mind well after we finished our meal. It has been a long time since I've had such delicious gourmet food. If you're planning to go, be sure to take enough money because it is a bit pricey. Was blown away by my meal at Communal. Save it for a nice date, or dinner with friends from out-of-town, it's on the spendier side (especially for Provo) but coming from the Bay Area I found it to be reasonably priced. The menu at Communal focuses on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, so if that's your jam then by all means make a reservation already! Our group of six ordered a ton of food, which was great since a number of their dishes are sized and plated for sharing. One of my friends was familiar with the restaurant and suggested that we lean on recommendations from our server to decide what to order. I definitely think this is the way to go too as our server was super up front about what she was loving on the menu, and what was worth skipping over until next time. We ordered starters to share as a group, which were all excellent. The Mussels and Beef tartare were standouts for me for sure, but we also ordered a Beet Salad and Little Gem salad to share with the table. For our entree my fiancé and I decided to share the Rabbit Pappardelle which was incredible-- I would easily order this again if it was featured on the menu. I think people are a little intimidated by Rabbit but it is by far one of my very favorite proteins if cooked properly, and it was braised beautifully here (fall apart, fork tender). Going thru town today and looked for a good salad. Communal came up on several places to try out. It was so yummy! I had Bleu Bacon Burger with a side salad. I asked for no bun and they offered a lettuce wrap instead, so delicious!!! The burger was cooked just right and not charred like some burger places. The side salad had what I assume was a house vinaigrette dressing that was light and just the right touch. My friend had the chopped salad with grilled chicken, ranch dressing and no bleu cheese, still asking how she could not like bleu cheese. :) she said it was really good but would likely ask for the dressing on the side next time. She doesn't like a lot of dressing and didn't even think about it until after the salad came. The atmosphere was really cool. Had a kind of retro vibe. It's a small place and we came just as lunch started. I would recommend reservations as I can see it being difficult to get a seat a dinner without a long wait. There's a reason why Communal is still around as one of Provo's higher end restaurants. Since the menu is constantly changing, you will have some hits and misses but there's something for eveyone. The experience is well worth the extra fare. The staff is knowledgeable and pays attention to detail. But some dishes don't change cause it's so good like the butterscotch pudding for dessert. read more

Communal is the closest taste of heaven you kind find here in the valley. Living in Utah County is a struggle as it is very difficult to find fresh and delicious food. Communal is the exception. From the food to the atmosphere, everything here screams "food lovers paradise". The Atmosphere - Communal is a small and intimate spot. The seating consists of one large table that seats around 18, and 3-4 other small tables In the corner. The kitchen is front and center so you can see what's going on, and smell the fresh local organic ingredients being prepared. The interior feels very modern, with a contemporary twist. Handmade water glasses made from old bottles, with varying shades of wood on the floor and furniture. Modern art, and cool light fixtures make the vibe here feel upscale yet unpretentious. The Food - The food is incredible. This restaurant makes their meals large enough to share. They recommend for 4 people to get two starters, two "proteins" (main dishes), and two starches - usually a variety of potato dishes. We started with the seared pork belly and house made sausage. Both were very flavorful and well presented. The pork belly was tender and served with some braised cabbage and apple purée. For the main courses, or "proteins" as they call them, we had the pork confit and roasted chicken. Both were excellent. The chicken was covered in some sort of maple sauce and was very moist. The pork was flavorful, plenty of salt, and very moist as well. I would recommend going with either. For our starch we got the cornbread infused with honey and covered in jalapeño butter, and the potatoes & kale au gratin. Overall, the experience at Communal is nothing short of spectacular. Great service, great food, and great vibes make for a very enjoyable and intimate experience. THIS IS A 3.8. After reading all the hype... I was very... how do i say... felt adequate? The food is good but... I also spent $35 dollars on a ribeye that was... okay. Good flavor, but I need to be able to eat the fat easily, it should be less chewy... if I'm dropping 35 bones! The potatoes were good and there were a lot, the sausage appetizer was really yummy, but the mustard after taste was gross. I loved it when it entered my mouth, and after strongly regretted it. The ambiance is awesome, as far as decorations lighting the kitchen being visible. But its almost TOO small, super loud in there, and I came away smelling like cooked meat... which personally... I don't mind. The butterscotch pudding? SHARE IT!! its big and cost 8 dollars. the mix of cookies and stuff... i felt like a kid again, but a kid who's sugar tolerance level has been lowered over 20 years. VERDICT: This is high dining... for Provo. We spent 80 dollars for all the aforementioned items including tip. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY over priced. Higher quality than most places, but seriously... as good as it gets? Dear Yelpers 5's should be saved for only the best food eaten. Communal has impressed me time and time again, having been several times for both dinner and breakfast. I am originally from Portland, where I took for granted moderately priced, thoughtfully prepared, locally sourced food. Having been in Utah for 8 years, Communal fills a much-needed gap in our local culture. I want to encourage anyone who came here when it first opened to try it again-- I feel their service and consistency has improved a great deal since they opened 2 years ago. The seasonal menu offers a different dining experience almost every time you go, which for some may mean they like it more some visits than others. For me, I like the adventure involved with eating food, so I don't want to eat the same thing every time I go somewhere, and Communal gives you ample opportunity for trying new things. If you want to eat the same thing every time you go out, go to a chain restaurant that uses frozen, imported, and/or processed foods that you can eat year-round. Communal is the antithesis of a chain restaurant, and I couldn't be happier about it. If you're going for a more casual dinner, you can easily share one appetizer, one entree, and one or two sides for two people. So for me, I don't feel it's expensive (especially if you've ever been accustomed to eating out anywhere BESIDES Utah). Breakfast is an absolute treat, and anytime I have a morning off it's the first place I think of. Once again, portions are large enough to share, tempting though it may be to order one of everything. We usually order 2 items and can hardly finish everything. Same price as eating at a yucky diner for something infinitely better with a great ambiance. There were a few restaurants we wanted to try in Provo but the other 2 were closed so we went with our third choice which was communal and we were really glad we did! We made a reservation and went for brunch. Coming in, it is a really fun atmosphere. Very quaint and the tables are very close if not connected. We sat closely to a couple guys catching up and the tables are close enough that we casually chatted about each others meals. My wife and I shared their biscuit with honey butter and jam. Best biscuit I have eaten. Huge, nice dark biscuit crust and you could pull super soft flaky layers off of it for days. Then for our main course she got the French toast and I got the steak chilaquiles. Whoa. We shared and it was the perfect combination of sweet from her dish and savory from mine. Everything was perfectly cooked and the portions were very size able. Once we were done neither of us had finished half our plates. The other thing to note is looking around, every table had a different meal I wanted to comeback and try. Overall with the tip we spent about $50 and walked away happy. The French toast put into the oven to heat up was seriously just as good as in the restaurant. The chilaquiles didn't keep at all which is totally understandable. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Utah County! Amazing food experience. You can really taste the difference in the quality of the food. Anything with greens will be melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the butterscotch pudding will make you feel like you've died and gone to heaven. We ordered the caramelized fennel and mushroom tart (so good), the winter squash and sausage (my favorite of the night), and the whole chicken. The other party with us ordered the chicken as well, the potato puree with cheese curds (also very good), and the lentils and sausage. Honestly, the chicken was great but the sides were our favorites. Would love to have tried their food but we arrived in person two days ago to find there was a 2 hour wait without reservations. Later that night we called and made reservations for two days later and found the earliest available was 7:30pm, so we went with that and made reservations. We went back for our 7:30pm reservation expecting we would be able to try Communal's food only to find they had no record of our reservation and that we would not be able to be seated for over an hour "without reservations." Both times we arrived to an unwelcoming staff which we could overlook if we would have been given the chance to try their food. read more

Amazing food, good service and felt socially-responsible with spacing, masks, etc. during the pandemic. We ordered the pork belly with maple glazed pears and pistachios and the apple pomegranate goat cheese salad for starters and both were phenomenal--our favorite parts of the meal. The hanger steak and butternut squash with black lentils were also so tasty. The broccolini was the lowest part of our meal, impossible to cut through, not as good as everything else, but alright. I can't stop thinking about the pork belly appetizer with pear. My husband and I ate here in December and it's been on my mind ever since. We also had the agnolotti pasta, grilled hanger steak, charred broccolini, butternut squash with black lentils and butterscotch pudding but I just can't stop thinking about the pork belly! I have to finish with how passionate the server was, he definitely had a deep love for the food he was serving, from where it came from to how it was cooked. Took my wife here last night for her birthday dinner! I could not be happier with the service we got. I messaged them on Facebook the day before her birthday asking if they had a menu that did not list pricing, not only did they do that for me, but they printed a new menu out that said Happy Birthday with my wife's name on the menu. She loved that. The food was something far ahead other places in the area. The short rib that we ordered was so tender, no knife needed. Your fork could do all the work. Highly recommend the Yukon Gold Potato Puree + Rockhill Cheese Curds. One thing we did notice is that the menu online is different from the one they actually use. They said they just recently updated the menu, but it still threw me off for what I had planned. There site is built on WP, so it shouldn't be difficult to update the menu online. read more

This restaurant by far is one of the best restaurants I've been to and I am from Vegas the restaurant capital of the world. It's hard not to exaggerate! First the reservation on Yelp went smoothly. Our server was very helpful with the menu suggestions, she gave us backgrounds on all our dishes and on the company. It's great when your server is attentive and personable. Portions are huge so we decided on the main dish to be the London Broil. We started with the apple salad. I am not a green lover but this was one salad I couldn't stop eating. When we asked the server where it came from- she said that you can subscribe to it!?! What??? But yes, the salad had no bitter greens it was delicious and perfectly dressed. The risotto and the cauliflower- a must! The London Broil cooked medium rare was again perfect to compete with the high end steak restaurants in Las Vegas. I try to cook London Broil and gave up because you really need to know how to cook this steak. It's not forgiving if overdone. The dessert was a Utah chocolate almost a pudding but between a cheesecake and mousse. Great ending to a perfect dinner! Thank you for a memorable experience we will never forget!
