This place is pretty good but half the time you come in you get a worker who skimps you on protien im not sure why. Always a great experience with Zao. This particular location had a fantastic staff. They were extremely friendly and warm - making sure everything was perfect. This place is affordable, delicious, and healthy. While the bowls are the most popular item, try the tacos! They are so good. Just make sure to get extra crispy onions. The restaurant was a bit on the cold side. Temp could go up a couple of degrees. Other than that, everything was great. read more

A friend wanted to go Zaos in Orem for lunch today. First time for me and it will definitely be the last. The food was poor to say the least. All the "protein" selections were dried out and this was at peak lunchtime- 12:10pm. The bowl contained a small pinch of noodles, a tablespoon of corn, and exactly 6 broccoli flowerets, a tablespoon of fried onion pieces all for $12.50!! So if you are looking for subpar, dried out, over priced food, head on over. Oh, don't try complaining... the "workers" just stand there and looked at you like you're speaking a foreign language. This is one of my favorite fast-food places in Utah! Everyone already knows that they are essentially the Asian Chipotle (but they actually let you customize your order...)! They have so many different options when it comes to how you want your plate put together. You can get a salad, a rice bowl, noodle bowl, veggie bowl, wrap, tacos & soup! You really can't go wrong with anything you get from here - everything is so fresh and you can taste the difference! I always go with a bowl with half rice & half yakisoba noodles, steak, all the veggies (I miss the potato veggie option - it really made the bowl extra filling and delicious) and the Zao way for the garnish toppings. I love Zao especially for a quick and inexpensive lunch! The chicken with yellow curry sauce is my favorite. I LOVE the noodles, both chao mein and rice noodles! The veggies are yummy and the corn and pickles onions and daikon are especially delicious little bits of sweetness. I've ordered in store and to go and both were very fast and easy! My wife said Zao had catered for a conference event she attended, and that it was not bad. So I decided to try it for myself and see what all the buzz was about. The restaurant itself is clean, chic, comfortable, and not a bad spot for lunch if you're in the area. All the bowls are customizable to suit your meal needs. There is also a nice variety of meats that choose from. Regarding the catering experience, I ordered the big bowl that serves 6-8 people. The employees here are great communicators and got my order exactly right: chicken bowl with teriyaki sauce on the side. The tastes and portions were quite good, with lots of vegetables on the side to go with the protein. I was a little disappointed they did not pack as much peanuts and fried onion cuz they're both delicious. My only complaint is that the proportion of rice to protein was a little off. There was not enough protein--just enough to barely justify the price. Besides that Zao is awesome, and I would do catering with them again for small events. read more

A new local favorite. Zao Asian Cafe is such a great concept. Where else can you get ban mi & tacos, a noodle down or salad? The concept is simple, choose a bowl, tacos, ban mi, a salad or soup, then add your protein, sauce and toppings. I went with a brown rice bowl with tofu, yellow curry and every vegetable that they have. It was delicious! Flavorful and filling. For a post-Thanksgiving meal, it was a fun treat and a great addition to the UTAH County food scene. With so many possible combinations, I'll definitely be back again. I just recently got to try Zao in orem, i absolutely fell head over heels for the guac!! I cannot imagine my day without it now i think in the past week we've gone 4 times. Would you believe us if we said we found the Asian food version of Chipotle?! . It's name is Zao Asian Cafe, and it is delicious and healthy! You can build your own bowl, which is what we opted for, but there are other options, including Asian tacos, banh mi, and more. We loved our noodle bowls with steak and green curry sauce. It tasted great, and most importantly, we felt great after eating it! They had chips and edamame guacamole, so you know we had to try that. I'm a fan of Zao. Each time I've been I have loved the freshness and the flavors. And it's less than $10 for a filling meal. So score there as well. Personally I love the tacos the most. In fact, I introduced my nephew to them and he has informed me that they're now one of his favorites. They have crunch, they have some spice (unless you don't add that), they have the savory... They really just hit the spot. And then don't leave you feeling heavy and greasy and gross. If you don't mind a little spice, I recommend getting them "the Zao way". Enjoy it! read more

I really enjoyed this option for something fresh and different from the norm! Bowls, salad, wraps, tacos and soup options. It's basically Chipotle but Asian inspired. All of their protein is listed as gluten free (even the meatballs!) on their menu, and there are vegan options as well. Note that if you have peanut allergies, chopped peanuts are a topping options but they are in separate area from the other toppings. I had 4 star expectations for this place and that is exactly what it delivered. The food is pretty darn good! I love the different options that they have and how you can choose exactly what you want your bowl to be like. It tasted fresher than your typical fast casual Asian restaurant. I would say this place is a couple steps up from a Panda Express or something like that. That yellow curry sauce is what it's all about! I was also particularly impressed with our service tonight. This is exactly the type of service that places like Cafe Rio and Zupa's are missing. The man that helped us was so kind and made sure that we had a good experience.
