Heard a lot about this place and have now tried it twice. Best thing is the service, nice friendly and attentive. Food is just ok, prices are high and portions not very big. Got a combo for $25, huge jump in price for two seafoods vrs one. Got six small oysters mostly breading and nice size shrimp, very skimpy on the fries, and wow $3.25 for a sweet tea. So many seafood joints that are cheaper, just as good if not better and bigger portions. Just average overall. read more

The absolute best food in St Augustine! I've been coming for over 30 years and I can't believe I just found out about this gem. We had the gator tail appetizer and the Commanders Boil! Everything is fresh. We tried the jambalaya, clam chowder, steamed oysters ,and the steamed clams. Everything was excellent. The service was fast and friendly . The price was right as well. Went to this restaurant as a last minute decision and were anxious to get in. They were pretty busy and we only had to wait about 10 minutes. We sat outside and the atmosphere was really nice, there was music playing, but not too loud that it was over powering. It had a laid-back and. Casual feel. I ordered chicken tenders because I am not a seafood fan. The chicken tenders were really good and and the breading was wonderful yet simple. The fried grouper sandwich was good, my mom ordered it. According to my father the shrimp and oyster platter was wonderful and the lobster chowder was exceptional. So this is a painful review to write. We have been going to Commanders since we moved to the Island 4+ years ago. Tonight we ordered 2 glasses of wine. They have glasses at the bar with fill lines for the bartender to follow. 6oz she says. She also told us it was a $14 bottle of wine at Publix. Pretty much swill in my book. But I'm ok with that till I see $7/a half glass. Bartender says "welcome to the island" and she has only been at Commanders since March. Point is, that's not how Anastasia Island establishments price cheap wine. It's why the entire bar was empty at 7pm on a Sat night. Bartender told the manager about my issue and she didn't feel the need to stop over. Fine. Tip reduction evened it up. If u are wait staff looking for a job, this isn't the place. Sorry Commanders, locals aren't going to support this ridiculous hosing of drink prices. Go to Sunset Grill, Beachcombers, Hurricanes or even Salt Life. You will get the same quality food and a real drink. Btw, a bottle was $21. Would have ordered that had I known the ridiculous pour. I hope they fix this policy of cheapness. read more

What a cool place. The environment was small and quaint. We had the oysters on the half shell..super tasty but on the small side. Also had thensteaned shrimp and they were big and tasty. My goodness was I in for a great meal. The Red shrimp was so plumb I had to go back three days later with friends. All the sides were fresh produce which you can't find in an informal setting. The staff make you feel like old friends and the desserts were so good also made onsite fresh. It's a fish market too. My new best place to eat. read more

Commander's is one of those casual but genuine seafood places that line the seaboards of the US. Delivering this kind of meal in tourist areas can definitely fall into lowest common denominator crap but family businesses like Commander's take what they do seriously and it shows. We found the restaurant one of our favorite choices on our recent visit to St Augustine and if staying over on the beach, it should be a top choice. We got fried shrimp and blackened fish and both were excellent quality and served up fresh, hot and quick. We sat out on the porch area around sunset and while not exactly ON the water (Intracoastal) you have a very nice view. We got glasses of their house wine and I was really surprised at how good it was. I think I got the Pinot and was quite good. We finished with a carb splurge of key lime pie and our excellent waitress pointed out that they serve this as two mini individual pies so perfect for sharing - and to this former Florida Keys resident it was bona fide and delish. Service was very good with just a bit of delay with a busy restaurant that evening. Overall, Commander's delivers pretty much exactly what I look for in this kind of place; good fresh and tasty food, served up in friendly fashion and good quality all around. read more

We found this place on the St. Augustine FB food page, we arrived and found a newer establishment with limited parking, the building looked like a trailer on stilts, they have stairs and a steep ramp, inside there's limited seating with booths by the windows or seating at the diner counter, we were greeted by a nice staff who seated us immediately, after a couple minutes our server came and took our order, we started with a draft beer for me and a sweet tea for my wife and we ordered the 1/2 lb Argentine steamed shrimp (which was $12.00/ 1/2lb and tasted great and with the right amount of spice)we held on ordering our main meals to enjoying our appetizer and to look at the menu. We were going to order but was told that on the combo meals you could not substitute items. After which looking at the prices for the meals and the amounts of items you receive we decided to just enjoy our appetizer and drinks . Five stars for the environment. Great atmosphere and staff. You don't come here for the food, though. The shrimp in both of our baskets (we got a 5 and 10 pcs basket) was wildly overcooked, and the fry batter tasted chalky and almost metallic. My husband said his shrimp looked like it had already been chewed. Average fries. Definitely shorted me on my "side" of fries. Not worth $35. The sauces are actually pretty good, however with so much good sea food in St. Augustine, there are better options. read more

We decided to try this restaurant out on our way back to Flagler Beach yesterday. It is a nice little restaurant with great ambiance. However we were disappointed in the pricing (too high) for what we received. I ordered the Oyster Po Boy sandwich which had 5 small oysters and sweet potato fries which had a $2 up charge from the other sides? Last time I checked sweet potatoes are not that expensive... My wife ordered a Halibut sandwich and a Stella, our bill was $46 bucks. Don't get me wrong I don't mind paying around $14 bucks per sandwich but if I do it better be filled with fried oysters etc. and not be a bread sandwich.... First of all, great food. Try it. Inside was kind of stuffy, even though there was AC. Outside was nice, but we were seated under an easy up, but in almost direct sunlight. Not fun when nursing sun burns. Service was a bit lacking, and the staff a bit confused. Family asked for malt vinegar and they took a long time to bring it. My Po' Boy was good but not great, but the slaw sucked. VERY dry. Almost just cabbage. No lubricant. Avoid the coleslaw by all means. My Po' Boy was good, but again, very dry. Not enough sauce. Its like this place is afraid to sauce things up at all. It was like that was everything. Ordered a dozen oysters. I was brought one tiny cup of cocktail sauce. Very highly recommended! We just made our first visit but they've been open about six months. It's a nice raw bar - style restaurant with good beer and wine selections. It's also an aquaculture operation, so they know seafood. The quality of the food, relaxed riverside atmosphere, and friendly staff and patrons make this an excellent place. I'm not an Oyster person but my husband and MIL are and they loved them...Said they were the freshest. We were told to try the New England Clam Chowder and we were not steered wrong - Delicious. I ordered the Shrimp Po' Boy and wish I had gone with just plain shrimp. It wasn't on traditional Po' Boy bread and since the shrimp were so fresh and yummy - I'd prefer them on their own. When we found out that their Clams were farmed right there across the inter coastal we decided to take home 50 Middlenecks that were as FRESH as you can get. Loved the staff too. Just took one star off for the Po' Boy but We will definitely be back to try more things. read more

Oh boy, where do I start?! We were looking for something casual and something close by for dinner and we all decided to give this place a try. For starters I had clam chowder and it was thin, almost watery and flavorless. My other half had a side salad and it was just that, a side salad. With 6 people in our group not one enjoyed their dinner!! The red shrimp tasted like ammonia, my fried shrimp had enough breading on them to kill someone and crab cakes had a lot of filler. The person that had the red shrimp told the waitress that his shrimp tasted like ammonia and she came back with an answer "the shrimp taste that way because they are flash frozen on the boat" ummm no ma'am!! The coleslaw wasn't even any good. Save yourself a wait and take your money to a different restaurant. And too boot they were out of most of their fish and out of oysters. Slow service! read more
