A delightful place close to the river but you can't see it because of the dunes. There is a balcony you can eat on and there is a nice breeze. Food was very good and the raw oysters were top notch. Great service as well. It's a few miles south or away from town so isn't as crowded as some of the places but every bit as good. read more

We went to Commander foe the first time last night and the reviews drove us there. We started with exceptional smoked fish dip. The homemade datil pepper sauce is perfect with it. My wife had the low country boil. Clams and Red Argentina shrimp were awesome. I had the fried oysters, shrimp and flounder. All were excellent. The flounder was fresh, light and flaky. The grits are the best. Key lime pie was very good. The best part was our server, Jennifer. She was attentive, gave great suggestions and worked hard. Stopped by Commanders on our latest visit in July. Was very disappointed. There were not that many people in the restaurant. We ordered red sangrias, fried gator tail, fried shrimp basket, the grilled shrimp/fish basket. The sangria and gator tail were good. The shrimp was ok. The grilled shrimp and fish came out as blackened. When we said it was blackened not grilled because it looked it and was very spicy, the waitress took it back to check with the kitchen and came back and said no it is definitely grilled. Tried another bite and said this is not grilled it is blackened. They took it and then brought us grilled shrimp and no fish. By this time everyone else is finished eating. We asked about the fish and got this blank stare. Five minutes later we get the grilled fish. It was good but the wait and not a single apology. We had to argue to get the correct food. Not sure we will be back after that. read more

The grilled Red Shrimp was excellent, the creamy grits were amazing, and Clam Chowder was the best! Not crazy about the coleslaw but I'm picky about texture in cole slaw. Worth the drive from our resort and highly recommend to anyone who wants great food without the fuss. read more

This restaurant came highly recommended by friends. It did not disappoint! It featured authentic seaside seafood in a quaint down home environment. I can only rate the service as we never ordered food and didn't even have a drink. We showed up late afternoon and it wasn't terribly crowded. We asked to sit at the bar and the host said he didn't have seats at the bar, even though there were 5 available seats. The host then handed us menus and said to sit at the bar, but that it would take a while for us to get served as they were slammed (which they really weren't, but ok). We sat down and watched the servers running around like chickens with their heads cut off. It was quite amusing, until the bartender who was finally coming up for air decided to get the people next to us a 3rd round of drinks rather than ask us if we wanted a drink. It was obvious he knew the people he was serving. I asked if we could get drinks, and he looked me dead in the eye and said "who told you that you could sit here"? I told him the host sat us there, but not to bother with the drinks as they wouldn't be getting a dime of ours. There were many people working, but everyone seemed frazzled and like they had never been a server before. As we watched the servers, none of them looked up or made eye contact, they were delivering the wrong food to tables and then getting very flustered and slamming dishes back in the kitchen because it wasn't correct. The food smelled good and looked good as we watched it go by for about 20 minutes, but they don't get a 2nd chance with us. Too many other options out there. read more

We went to the deck as a family and were told that our order couldn't be put in due to another large order. We waited for over 2 hours and watched other people leave just to find out that the kitchen hadn't even looked at our ticket. I called and spoke to the owner Nancy who was upset that I wouldn't give her a chance to make up for the bad service so she hung up on me. Grouper was very fresh. The boom boom shrimp appetizer is a must!! Definitely get a side of their grits with your meal. It has a secret ingredient that gives it a taste like no other. Staff is super friendly. Only downside is a beer and wine option only. read more

Relaxed atmosphere and great food and beer. I tried the Ancient City red ale and really enjoyed it. We had the smoked fish dip and it was great with very generous portion. I had the shrimp poor boy and the shrimp were very fresh and cooked perfectly. My husband had the oyster poor boy and he liked his also. Both had very fresh shredded lettuce with cucumber pickles. My husband had the shrimp and grits which had no spice at all and was swimming in a red oil. The grits were oddly sour tasting. I had the nightly special flounder over pasta carbonara. The flounder was utterly tasteless. The pasta was ok for the first few bites. It's such a cute place that I wish I could say better things about the food. I love this place. A true hidden gem . They have some of the best clams I have ever had. You can't go wrong with them . I also had the royal red shrimp with old bay on them , and very tasty as well .
