Stopped for the outdoor seating and some cold beers and messy seafood- it hit the mark with each of those. My group sat at the picnic tables in the waaaay back and our waitress/bartender was wonderful. Super woman, actually, because she was understaffed and was bartending, bussing, serving and taking orders all by herself! Seafood was a tad underwhelming, I was craving good crab and peel-and-eat shrimp, but both were unfortunately overdone. I'm not an oyster fan, but my group seemed to enjoy them. Po-boys were all delicious and sides were as expected

Forgot to do my Yelp review for Wednesday 12.28. After a trip to JAX to drop off our daughter four of us thought it was time for some seafood at Commander's. Apparently lots of others had the same idea. We started with some beers and wine. For appetizers a dozen raw oysters (from Virginia). Excellent. Now the sad news. No seafood left. Yep all gone. Well good for them in today's market it's good to see a restaurant doing well. We will be back.

Stopped by with a party of six for dinner and was not impressed. The piece of fish I ordered was the size of my cell phone along with a bowl of grits for 35.00. Beware the "market price" pricing, which is on most items on the menu. My husband ordered a dozen oysters. I've never seen oysters that small. And you would think being a fresh shrimp town that they would have fresh St Augustine shrimp - nope - they serve Argentinian (red) shrimp, which are sold at Walmart. But I'm sure they'll get enough unknowing tourist traffic to keep them going. Me being a local, won't be back.

This place is very quaint real beachy feel and delicious. It has the beachy ambience., The food was amazing, the Lieutenant boil could use some more sauce options the potatoes were slightly dry, but overall, it was delicious. . The service was impeccable., Mia was our server., She was very bubbly and fun and personable.. I would absolutely recommend this place. We had three options of where to sit we could sit inside or outside or outside by the water. We chose just to sit outside, not by the water because it was hot and we saw there was more shade. It was recommended we try it out up here in Georgia, before we even went on vacation and I highly recommend it

If you want fresh and local, this is the spot. We stopped for lunch, had the smoked fish dip and a bucket of oysters. Delicious!

Ask the Community - Commander's Shellfish Camp

    Accessible by boat?

I saw boats drive by, but I didn't see any docking area at the restaurant for boats.

Are they on the water - with boat parking?

Yes, they are absolutely on the water (their shellfish cultivation requires it), but I do not believe they have boat slips available to the public.

Our server was super nice and tended very well to our table. Made the experience even more enjoyable. Stuffed shrimp entree and the Cowboy swamp combo(gator tail, frog legs, and catfish) with a side of fries is what our table enjoyed. Would highly recommend the seasoned fries over baked mac n cheese any day. Everything was delicious!

The service in my experience over the last few years has been just fine. No complaints about that. The first time we went back after the change, all the decor was gone and they only had about 5 things on the menu because they said something was wrong with their oven or stove or something. Now, the menu is VERY small compared to what it used to be so there really isn't much selection. The atmosphere has lost its cozy unique feel. A lot of the funky crazy decor and old fishing equipment (nets, poles, traps) is gone. They've replaced the old glass tables and chairs made of drift wood with plain old industrial style decor that feels boring a like a millennial burger joint--not like a nice creek side restaurant. A lot of the original decor is gone. I always get the three way shrimp. I went a few days ago and my grits were room temperature. The "stuffed shrimp" had uncooked crab dough balls on it so I didn't finish those. I pretty much only ended up eating the BBQ shrimp because I lost my appetite. When we made it back to our room, I actually got sick. This has been absolutely heartbreaking for me. I understand that things change! But this has not been a good change. I have been back many times over the last few years and the quality of the food has not been the same and the taste is not as good. My family has had mixed experiences with them as well over these last few years under new ownership. As upsetting as it is and as much as this restaurant has always meant to me, I don't think I can go back--especially not after my food made me sick. For reference: we arrived shortly after they opened at about 4:30 and were one of maybe 5 other tables seated at the restaurant, so it should have been one of the first meals to come out for the evening. I can't think of any reason my food would not have been cooked properly. If I hear from family or friends that things have changed, I would love nothing more than to be able to return! But I can't in good conscience go back and spend money there. :( this restaurant meant so much to me my whole life and I am devastated.

The restaurant is adorable, featuring memorabilia from the family's original restaurant and family photographs. Our server was excellent. I started by treating myself to a lovely bottle of wine. Sometimes dry rosé is a bit hard to find, but the Fuedo Disisa was excellent. While we waited for our meals to be prepared, we enjoyed a basket of soft, warm bread with herb garlic butter. It was like having dessert first! My husband ordered angel hair spaghetti with marinara sauce. He really enjoyed it. I ordered chicken Marsala. Both dishes were excellent. The Marsala sauce was so flavorful, plenty of mushrooms, and is served with your choice of pasta--I had penne. The entrees were both plentiful portions and we had enough to take home for another meal. We saved room for dessert. My husband had the chocolate cake and I had the Italian cheesecake which is made from ricotta cheese. It was creamy and delicious, and I enjoyed it with an excellent cup of coffee. Highly recommend this lovely family restaurant, a favorite of the locals in St. Augustine.
