Come for the famous Chinese chicken salad, stay for the comfy ambiance. Sometimes the line is super long, but if you know what you're getting, go and grab it. Closed on Monday and Tuesday, also closes early. Always a great place to have brunch and spend the day in San Anselmo. Take a stroll around the Holidays, go to the local library, and check out the shops. Friendly neighborhood, dog-friendly, great vibes - so lucky to have Comforts nearby. 'Til next time ~ cheers and see you on Yelp (SYOY)!

You'll find Comforts on the main street in downtown San Alselmo. As others have stated, they are known for their Chinese chicken salad. So as a dutiful Yelper, of course I had to try it! When I was there, it looked like they were renovating the patio area so unfortunately the windows that adjoined the patio area were covered. Nonetheless, the ambiance is light and airy with interesting light fixtures. Prepare yourself for lots of chewing. The salad has all the elements of a good meal: protein, fiber, yumminess. Alas I bit into something hard and pokey. A clump of the rice noodles that would normally get deep fried into crispy and airy goodness had missed the frying pot. Instead it ended up embedded into the roof of my mouth. Ouch! Eating this could be an occupational hazard. Thankfully the rest of my salad was fine. The restaurant adjoins a deli area where you can buy said salad in bulk to take home. They also sell the dressing separately. Would be interested to try out other items from their menu next time.

Classic. I was here 40(?) years ago when their infamous Chinese chicken salad came in the scene. My grandma brought me. It may have been the first time I realized salad could be delicious enough to be the first choice for a meal Came today because we were in the area and felt like salad. Nostalgia aside, and now that I'm a "foodie" and used to awesome salads , I can say the salad is still great. It has a good balance of almonds and chicken taste and the chicken is cut about the same size as the nuts. I'd like some cabbage added for health. But yeah, a good salad Bathroom grade: A. 2 single serve rooms. Clean and bright with nice smelling soap

Really enjoyed the Chinese chicken salad. Service was quick and friendly. It can get busy, but I never felt rushed to finish my meal. I'd happily return.

One of my favorite parts of this shop/restaurant is the location!!! Down town San Anselmo is soo charming. Perfect for exploring and then stopping at comforts for a bite. We got the Chinese chicken salad as raved about on the internet (disclaimer: I don't love Chinese chicken salads I think they are good but like other salads better) BUT it was a really good chicken salad! The stand out dish is the French toast!! Pecan crusted and filled with some delicious custard! This made the meal worth it! They only serve breakfast until 12 btw! So crunchy and delicious. Service was fine. Nothing stand out but not a bad experience. We are outside and it was lovely. Indoor and outdoor options. Definitely will come back for the French toast!

Only half the small Chinese chicken salad it was huge and so good!

The food was awesomely dying in the dining room. The new remodel is amazing. Service was perfect. I only have one complaint. They have these fancy salt and pepper shakers on the table and it is so gross dirty. I don't even wanna touch it on the table next to me.

This was my first time coming to this particular restaurant and OMG it was so cute and quaint!! My brother and sister-in-law came here and said they have really good brunch and Boy where they right!! A lot of people were getting takeout items and apparently their construction/remodel just started the day before we arrived. Everything looked a little chaotic, but I guess they were pretty busy for a Sunday. I saw a number of customers walk by and then come back and ask if they were even open. After their response they were seated or got takeout! Lol I felt kind of bad for the employees working in such hard conditions, but they seemed to have everything pretty well organized even though they're walkway is a bit shorter and there's construction/plywood up all over the place as well as plastic tarps sectioning offered in areas. Lol we sat outside with our puppies and we were able to be seated and ordered/received our food within 10 minutes! I was actually a bit worried since I ordered the French toast and there was a sign on the menu stating it might take 15 minutes to make. I was very impressed with how speedy the service was!! I also wanted to order an iced coffee, but didn't get a chance to since the server seemed a little busy as well as the host who was trying to seat people and make sure the takeout customers were able to go inside to get their takeout, as well as dine in customers could get pastries from the takeout counter which was on the other side. It seemed as if they had two different registers inside, but maybe just getting into the swing of things or the new swing of temporary remodeling things caught the employees offguard? Nevertheless, I would love to go back to the place again and try more of their items since we loved the, fish tacos and the pecan crusted stuffed French toast!

Carmel bar - super thick layer of Carmel split 4 ways

Had lunch with a friend and brought home a bunch of sweet treats for the family. The rosemary chicken sandwich was wonderful- love the light airiness of the toasted sourdough. Solid sandwich - I'd come for lunch again The pastries however were a big let down. Not sure we would do pastries here. Apricot bar- had chopped diced firm dried apricots. In theory this may sound good, but the chunks of firm tart apricots was not to our liking. Wish they had reconstituted them or did a quick cook / breakdown for something soft and maybe sweeter. The oatmeal base - delicious. The raspberry strudel - looked amazing but the filling was made with frozen, bland berries. Hubby thought the topping was good. But this is going in the bin. Perhaps holding off on this variation until fruit is in season. Carmel bar - if you're craving Carmel - this is that!! Lots of Carmel on a shortbread crust. So rich we cut into quarters - not sure we would do this again personally. But if you love Carmel you should try. Coffee cake- was moist nice flavor and we enjoyed the following morning with our lattes. Total bill $47

They have a bit of everything here

I loved the ambiance here, it had a very chic vibe with modern decor. As always, I'm on the go so I grabbed the chicken salad, chicken parmigiana, macaroni & cheese and skipped the available sauce opting to just stick with the dressing which came with the salad. I liked this place and kinda wish I had just stuck with just the salad. The cold chicken and cold Mac & Cheese ruined the meal. I guess I was expecting them to heat those up and should have paid attention, my bad. I took the cold food home, heated them up and the taste improved exponentially.

I love this restaurant! My go to brunch place and it is reasonably priced. I love my French toast and their's is my favorite in all of Marin, keep in mind they only sell until 11am and then their lunch menu. The French toast is nice and fluffy with a pecan glaze and pecan pecan pieces, I love my pecans! The plate is worth ~$18 and a couple could comfortably eat for $40-50. They also cut a part for to go food if you dont want to stay long and it's really convenient, just take number and they will call you and you order.

My friend's parents use to order the Chinese Chicken Salad here, which I hear is the BEST! I have tried it and it IS good! Recently, I met up with a friend and stopped for brunch here. We got there at 10:30am and was able to get seated quickly. Had we waited another 1-1.5hrs, there would've been a wait. They have a good amount of seating inside and out. Place is clean and lively. Bakery area on one side; seating on the other. The service was ok. Our waitress took my friend's drink order and didn't even bother to ask me what I wanted and was about to walk away until my friend told her to wait. She would check up on us; but she didn't stop to ask, it was in passing. However, I noticed she was the only person waiting on all the tables outside. I feel for the workers (esp after the pandemic); so overall, she was great for the number of tables she had to wait on! The food was great. I had the mushroom and polenta with my eggs sunny side up. This was SO good and filling. I'd order this again next time I come back! Also, I had a vanilla latte w/soy milk. It was good but not as great as the coffee roastery just a few blocks down. Overall, I would definitely come back here again. I wanted to try their scones as I heard it's the best; but, I was so full that I had to pass on it.

Do they still make chocolate covered sunflower seeds? 🌻 🍬

Good question, I picked up a bag last time in, but that was awhile ago

Does anyone know if Comforts cooks their burgers over open flame / grill? I definitely prefer flame…

I prefer mine the same way and enjoy their burgers. Haven't been in the kitchen, but based on eating experience, I say open flame. I'll go this week and eat one to be sure :)

What I didn't realize at the time was the sheer pedigree behind it. It turns out Madcap is Michelin-rated, and Chef Ron Siegel is a celebrity chef. A Top Chef alum who headlined at legendary spots like The French Laundry and Michael Mina. Ironically, I didn't learn any of this from a food blog or Yelp. I heard it from my dentist in Vallejo. Talk about a random convo! As for the food, Chef Siegel's creations are pure joy--a celebration of culinary genius that feels genuinely divine. It's the kind of meal that evokes deep emotion; it really is magical. I can honestly say it's the best restaurant in Marin, Point Reyes included. We paired our meal with a beautiful bottle of sake by Pharrell Williams (yes, you read that right), and to top off an already incredible evening, we got to meet Chef Siegel and take a group photo with him. What a cool dude! Inside the restaurant, the decor was refined and classy, featuring rich dark wood accents and curated artwork. My only minor complaint was the seating - the wooden chair, while stylish, could have been a bit more comfortable. Overall, it was a truly lovely experience.

Unlike the dictionary definition of "madcap" -- wildly impulsive or chaotic -- the exquisite dining experience at this Michelin-starred restaurant is anything but. My experience was calm, intentional, playful, and deeply refined. After living in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005, I had just learned about Madcap and was thrilled to celebrate a friend's birthday there. From the moment we were greeted by Kim at the host stand -- warm, poised, and genuinely welcoming -- we felt special. Anticipation built immediately. Our four-course prix fixe menu was printed on artisanal, handmade-feeling paper -- textured, elegant, and thoughtful. With a minimalist design aesthetic, every detail serves a purpose and is beautiful in its restraint. The luxury here is subtle but palpable. Large, colorful, whimsical paintings line the walls -- one even reminded me of Jane Fonda as Barbarella. The chopsticks and flatware are distinctive and sculptural. Nothing feels accidental or unintentional. From a 15-page beverage menu, I selected a 2023 Raventós i Blanc Blanc de Blancs Cava from Conca del Riu Anoia, Catalunya. Crisp, celebratory, and the perfect opening note. If you might assume "small courses" won't satisfy, think again. I left completely full. Welcome Snacks Before the first official course, we were surprised with a small welcoming assortment. I couldn't name each component, but they were colorful, beautifully balanced, and layered in flavor and texture -- playful yet precise. A lovely crescendo into what followed. First Course Nicasio Valley egg, lemongrass spuma, pine nuts. We chose to add the optional Black Périgord truffle. When pierced with my spoon, the bright yellow yolk blended like a brushstroke into the white of the egg. The spuma (an airy, savory foam created by aerating a sauce) added a delicate citrus-herbal lift to the richness of the egg. The pine nuts brought delightful contrast texture. Oh, and that exquisite toast! Elegant and harmonious. The delicately-shaved truffle provided a heavenly mouth-feel. Second Course Winter salad, shima aji, orange olive oil or Sunchoke tortelloni, spinach, shiitake, thyme jus One companion chose the vibrant winter salad -- stunning in color and textures including shima aji, a premium Japanese fish. I chose the sunchoke tortelloni. Although I'm usually not a fan of al dente pasta, here it worked beautifully to contrast the creamy filling. The green-tinged spinach tortelloni were visually striking and balanced by the earthy shiitake and fragrant thyme jus. Third Course Mount Lassen trout, abalone & carrot risotto, lobster cream or Flannery beef ribeye, artichoke, Banyuls, black garlic We all chose the trout. The fish was executed perfectly -- caramelized, crisp exterior, yet it flaked effortlessly into large, tender pieces with the fork. The carrot risotto leaned slightly sweet for my palate, though beautifully textured. The tiny slivers of abalone, however, were surprisingly overcooked and chewy. The lobster cream had a thinner, almost broth-like consistency and didn't meaningfully elevate the dish. For reference, Banyuls (used in the ribeye preparation) is a French fortified wine like port from the Roussillon region that creates deep, slightly sweet reductions that complement richer meats. Fourth Course Shiso panna cotta, pineapple vanilla gelée. The panna cotta was softly set, cool, and subtly sweet -- a lovely, light finish. The Japanese mint herb of shiso was subtle. The crumble beneath added wonderful contrast and texture. A small piece of pineapple was firmer than expected, though the overall composition remained balanced and refreshing. With it, I had a decaf Americano. It was so smooth and flavorful I drank it black -- and enjoyed every sip. Post-dessert course We were pleasantly surprised with a pearlized white box of what appeared to be handmade confections: caramel, a sugar-dusted berry gelée, and a ganache-filled chocolate truffle. The unexpected welcome bites and post-dessert confections made the four-course prix fixe feel even more generous and thoughtfully orchestrated. Madcap is an experience of delightful visual artistry and intentional composition. The overall execution, ambiance, and hospitality created a memorable evening. P.S. While I typically eat gluten- and dairy-free, making those substitutions would have fundamentally changed the menu. For this celebratory evening, I chose not to alter the chef's composition. We visited on 2/26/26.

I honestly didn't realize how much I'd enjoy playing pinball until coming here--there aren't many spots that have that kind of unique feature anymore, and it really added to the experience. I went for a Yelp Elite event, and it was great. The owner was there and super welcoming, and his staff were genuinely nice and attentive. We were given bracelets that gave us access to two drinks, which was a fun self-pour experience. That said, it would've been helpful to get a quick tip on pouring (like tilting your glass) beforehand--foam can sneak up on you fast , especially with so many people around. Because it was busy, we were also given a card that allowed unlimited access to the games, which was awesome and made the night even better. I definitely enjoyed my time here. The owner also mentioned that you can rent individual tables or even the whole venue for events, which is something I'd absolutely consider in the future. I'll definitely be back.

And if you like beer they have a great selection there as well. I recommend the altered state - but at 9% only one! We also love the vibe: you can come casual or polish up! High ceilings, wise lighting, strategic booth walls and level changes make the place seem larger than it is, yet cozy at the same time. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting the owner Matt today. We opted for the Brunch Prix Fixe menu ($49 per person), selecting two appetizers and two entrées, and every single dish exceeded expectations. To begin, the Jalapeño Lobster Toast was a standout. The lobster was incredibly tender and sweet, elevated by a delicate kick from the jalapeño, the ginger aïoli added a subtle warmth. Each bite was layered, balanced, and deeply satisfying. Equally impressive was Michael Mina's Ahi Tuna Tartare (well worth the supplement). This dish was a masterpiece of freshness and complexity. The tuna was pristine, melting in the mouth, while the combination of mint, chilis, and Asian pear created a mix of coolness, heat, and sweetness. The pine nuts added a welcome crunch, and the garlic habanero-sesame oil delivered a bold, aromatic depth that made the dish very unique. For the main course, the Bungalow Benedict was pure comfort elevated to perfection. Served on a beautifully toasted Model Bakery English muffin, the Canadian bacon was rich and savory, while the poached eggs were cooked flawlessly, their yolks silky and indulgent. The hollandaise was luxuriously smooth while the breakfast potatoes on the side were crisp, golden, and perfectly seasoned. The Steak Frites Au Poivre (also a supplement) was another highlight. The filet medallions were cooked exactly to temperature (we asked for med rare) tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The au poivre sauce added a refined peppery richness that complemented the meat beautifully. The crinkle-cut fries were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside! Dessert was the perfect finale. The Brûléed Basque Cheesecake was extraordinary, so creamy and rich with a delicately caramelized top that added depth and texture. The Three Layer Chocolate Cake was pure decadence. Moist, rich, and intensely chocolatey, it was elevated by the lightness of whipped crème fraîche. The salted caramel sauce tied everything together with a perfect sweet-salty finish....you can tell I'm a chocoholic! Beyond the food, the ambiance deserves special mention. The space is incredibly refined, with a soothing palette of pastel tones that immediately invites relaxation. The décor draws inspiration from Art Nouveau and Art Deco, creating an atmosphere that feels both timeless and thoughtfully curated. Everything is immaculate, contributing to an overall sense of understated luxury. Finally, the service truly elevated the entire experience. The General Manager, Giovanni, was outstanding. He guided us through every detail of the menu, offering thoughtful explanations and perfectly pairing wines with each course. His presence was attentive yet never intrusive, making us feel completely at ease. His professionalism, warmth, and deep knowledge added a personal touch that made the experience truly memorable. Service was warm and genuinely friendly, but noticeably sluggish for a special occasion dinner. The cocktail menu leans hard into "curated house creations," but the execution left little room for nuance -- the Mezcal Negroni was essentially just a glass of Mezcal wearing a Negroni costume. If the base spirit is going to be that forward, it needs to be intentional, not a shortcut. Appetizers were decent but felt almost apologetically small -- the kind of portions that make you wonder if they're building anticipation or just cutting costs. The mains told a similar story. Generous in size, sure, but each dish had at least one thing you couldn't ignore: the lobster pot pie needed more depth and richness to justify itself, the pork came out dry, the salmon's romesco skewed so sweet it lost all its savory backbone, and the hanger steak -- despite being listed as a featured cut -- was surprisingly undersized. The bones of something great are clearly here: a fun concept, a nice space, a staff that cares. But right now the kitchen isn't finishing its sentences. Oh, and the dessert? waaaay too sweet and inedible. I'd give it another shot on a better night -- hopefully the execution catches up to the ambition.
