I've been to this cafe twice, each time following a hike at Cataract Falls. Fairfax has its share of local cafes and eateries to cater the outdoorsy crowd. Fairfix Cafe has some simple but varied options that range from breakfast sandwiches to a Mediterranean plate to all kinds of salads and sandwiches in between. On a Monday afternoon around 1, it was steady but not overly full. I got the fattoush salad with sliced avocado. A small was plenty for lunch and it had a nice array of chopped lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pita chips and feta. A nice lemony vinaigrette came on the side and it was overall a refreshing & light lunch option. I enjoyed it. Food came quick and service was nice enough. After tackling a fairly ambitious hike (at least for me) at Tomales Point (22,000+ FitBit steps...impressive no?), I was driving back on Sir Francis Drake Blvd feeling quite famished. I really had no destination in mind, but I noticed Fairfax had a lot of options in one concentrated area. Besides, there was a convenient parking lot which I could enter and exit quite easily. It didn't take me long to decide on this casual Mediterranean cafe. As I look at their website now, it appears they've done some renovation work, expanded their menu, and changed their name to Lord Fairfix Cafe & Tap. I noticed they still offered what I had, the $17.95 Mediterranean Plate though mine was two dollars cheaper. It was a mighty full plate with all the standard components - falafel balls, hummus, tabouli, dolmas, feta cheese, tzatziki, toasted pita wedges as well as a small salad of romaine, tomato slices, peperoncini and red onions. I had no complaints about the quantity, and I found it pretty fresh (photo: https://bit.ly/3D6V6d2). I just thought the service was pretty curt and selective. The owner appeared to favor regulars, but the speaking for the rest of us, I felt like I was in a chow line at state prison. Not that I know that feeling firsthand. Maybe I smelled of tule elk poo from the hike. Oh well, maybe I'll try Lord Fairfix if I pass by town again. Hopefully I'll feel more welcome then. My friend and I wanted to go out for breakfast somewhere with a nice indoor-outdoor setup. We settled on the beautiful and very dry back patio of Fairfix! What a lovely spot. The falafel wrap was loaded and very tasty. My cappuccino was high quality. There are so many items on this menu which look incredible! Will definitely come back to use the wifi and eat soon. I grew up with this cafe in the late 90s but IT's changed hands several times and recently it's under new ownership. I tried to meet my mom there last week at 5:00 on a weekday only to find locked doors and no sign showing hours or explanations. I had to do a deep dive into google to discover the hours have massively changed and they are only open into the evening on weekends. Last I was there 2 years ago the menu was great so i was really bummed to be looking forward to their Mediterranean platter and finding out they weren't even open. I guess the locals probably already know because this cafe has been a landmark but some of us coming from out of town are still relying on google for hours of operation info and it's just not accurate. Hands down the best sandwiches I've had in many years! Lord Fairfax Sandwich was stuffed with meat, cheese and toasted to perfection! My sister had the double BLT which was also stuffed with goodness! My dad had the ham sandwich and was very impressed! The bread was fresh, crispy and was soft in the middle. I'm giving a 4 star only because the food was surprisingly good, and it was a holiday. The mediterranean plate is sparse on tabouleh. The salads were fresh and tasty. The system used where an assigned number if given to be placed on the table for a server to find/deliver the food is very broken. The service was just horrible. They were working hard against an ineffective system. Most food was delivered to the incorrect table. One customer simply asked for a refund after her order was "lost". The person taking orders is also managing the restaurant at the same time. This could work if the system used and service both improved. Thank you. read more

This was my first time visiting this establishment and I loved it! We were in the area for a hike and wanted to stop and get a good meal beforehand. This place had pretty awesome reviews, so FairFix Cafe it was! I'm so glad we settled on this place. We parked a little down the street from the cafe itself -- the parking lot across the street was full so we did street parking instead. Not too bad for a Saturday though! We got to walk by all the neat stores next to this cafe which was nice. They have a diverse menu, breakfast foods and lunch foods! I got the waffles with fruit topping, which was $10.95 -- you don't get too much food for that price, but I like smaller portions myself so it was perfect for me. If you're hungrier, you should gear towards the lunch menu. We also got a couple of Yerba teas as well. Live music inside as well! The cafe is pretty big and also has a back patio for seating. When we went this past Saturday, there was a guy playing live music inside the cafe; he was really fun to listen to. I would love to come back here and try more of their menu items! read more

I went there today and the host greeted me at the door. Being celiac, I always have to ask if the restaurant has gluten free choices. She assured me they did. Their food is delish, but what she and the server failed to tell me is they charge double for gluten free bread, in that both me and my friend got the same style sandwich except that hers was twice my size! I asked the server who told me yes, GF bread is more expensive so they only serve a half portion for the same price! She then charged me $8 for two Arnold Palmers (not on the menu) and my friend only paid $3.50 for a mediocre cappuccino. Something's rotten when someone with a disability gets charged twice as much due to a disability, without being told up front. My friends and I will not return. read more

Made a quick breakfast stop with some friends on the way back to SF. The hummus plate was quite large ($8) and came with a smile. (See my photo!) I wish the pita had been a little warmed. My husband got a croissant with ham and cheese, and it was a great greasy breakfast sandwich. Sadly, it was the last croissant of the day (around 11am on a Thursday), so that was disappointing for the rest of our crew, who had a fruit cup (pulled from the self-serve 'fridge) and some yogurt. There's a back patio, but it doesn't get a lot of sun (or, it didn't around 11am). Vibe inside is a little hippie, reminded me of a few cafes in Berkeley. A little slow, but that's ok. We live in Fairfax about 5 minutes from all the restaurants and I gotta say, Fairfix is one of the few that we avoid. Service is atrocious, unnecessarily curt and rude. (Last time we went with friends and kids, we brought food from other spots for the kids and ordered food from Fairfix and got chewed out by staff for not ordering more from them and using their tables--no other patrons were using the tables.) As someone who has worked in the service industry, I'd say this usually is the case when staff are not treated well by their employers. But who knows. Food is average to subpar. First time visit for lunch today and it was packed. I guess table service is reserved for dinner based on the reviews. The staff was friendly but could have used some backup help. It seemed like orders came out according to prep difficulty with many receiving their orders quickly even thought they ordered way after we did. We had the penne bolognese and the smoked Turkey sandwich, which should not have needed too much prep time since the sauce is premade for the pasta and a sandwich is pretty simple. We love the penne at Ghiringhelli's in Novato and this was supposed to be the same, but it was not. First of all the penne was missing, apparently switched with fettuccini which is not as sauce sticking friendly and the bolognese was heavily creamed which did not sit well with my wife afterwards. The salads and Mediterranean plates maybe the best call here. The sandwich was just smoked turkey lunch meat not a real smoked turkey, which would have been superior. Very busy environment with people dodging people everywhere. So if want a relaxing atmosphere with your meal or real service this may not be your best choice.
