This cute and charming cafe is located right across College of Marin's Kentfield location. I popped in before an afternoon meeting and wasn't surprised it was going to be packed. The restaurant's interior dining space was full of diners enjoying beautifully prepared meals. The patio was also filled with patrons leisurely chatting, enjoying each other's company. I opted for their Fiesta Salad for lunch. As the picture shows, mixed greens, corn, tomatoes, cotija cheese, black beans, cilantro, and avocado in a big bowl, topped with about a 6 ounce chicken breast. The salad looked like a lot of food but it was light and fresh. It had all the ingredients I love. Service was quality. All the waiters were attentive and the busy kitchen kept up with the orders. This place is so unassuming from the street, and so rustically darling on the inside! We learned about it through some friends that suggested it for brunch a few months back, and then we came back on our own as well. Service is surprisingly fast considering how busy they get for weekend brunch. Waiters come around often and are very efficient. REALLY wish they had more veg options, as there are currently only two things (a tofu scramble, and avocado toast). The tofu scramble has fresh veggies, but very little seasoning, so it's quite bland. The avocado toast is literally avocado on toast, no fun garnishes or seasonings. We would def come here more often if we had more options, and maybe more exciting flavors. read more

This spot is an institution in Kentfield. It's easy to walk to from the surrounding neighborhoods as it's right off the bike path. There is also a decently-sized parking lot. The appearance made me think I am taking a break while on a forest retreat/expedition. A bit on the warm side, so it reinforces my beliefs haha. For myself, I had the green eggs and ham (poached eggs and Black Forest ham topped with salsa verde and melted cheese). We don't go out for breakfast very often. It was on a whim that we decided to pop into one of our old favorites, Half Day Café, today after a walk around the lagoon... Overall, this is a very mixed review. While the food was good, it wasn't fantastic, and definitely not comensurate with the price tag of $52 for two, including tip. We've been coming here off and on for decades. We remember welcoming staff, being seated with a warm smile and humor. Instead, this visit we were seated immediately but without any welcoming smile. This level of service continued throughout. Adequate, but without charm or warmth. We'd get more warmth from our dog if we ate at home. Next, our food. We ordered a Belgian Waffle with Whole Wheat-Sunflower Seeds and the fruit cup option. The waffle was good, and we liked the added texture from the sunflower seeds. The fruit was a mix of underripe mellon (crunchy), a piece of papaya (good), half a strawberry (good), and a couple of grapes. For a fresh fruit bowl, we'd want all of the fruit to be at its peak of ripeness, or don't serve it. I ordered the Brioche French Toast. The menu said "coffee-Kahlua batter, served with orange butter". I totally forgot about the coffee-Kahlua batter in the description until just now. I did not taste any hint of the Kahlua/coffee. The orange butter was ok. I was served 5 half slices of the French Toast. I knew this would be more than I was going to eat, and so we got a box to take home the rest. There was an extra $3 charge if we wanted real maple syrup. We opted for the default, fake maple syrup. It was fine. Nothing comes with the French Toast, so I ordered a side of hash browns. Those were pretty good, crispy outside, still hot. Our waiter never came back to check how things were. I tried to get his attention for some ketchup, but ended up just walking over to the cabinet and taking it myself. To drink we both ordered decaf mocha. It was very foamy, very chocolatey, and very sweet. Our first sips were great, but halfway through the drink, we found a half inch layer of chocolate sludge at the bottom. I guess it was never fully mixed into the drink (is this something we're supposed to do?). When we stirred it in, the mocha was almost undrinkable it was so sweet. I asked our server as he was clearing our plates if he could top it off with some plain decaf. He promptly did, and that helped balance out the sugar content. Overall, we were disappointed. The best part was our conversation with each other, and having an unusual change of pace by having breakfast out. But when we thought about the actual breakfast and service, we decided this would not be a place we'd come back to for any future breakfast. That's sad, because we have such nice memories over the years. Further Update: I've been thinking about our breakfast for a couple of days, and wanted to add something. The overarching feeling was that we were being nickel and dimed. At least with the two dishes we ordered, they were barebones. Nothing came with our meals -- everything was à la carte. There was the waffle/French toast, but nothing else on the plate. No option for whipped cream, no garnish (like a slice of orange), nothing to make the plate pretty. It just felt like the restaurant was doing everything they could to keep their prices as low as possible at the detriment of what they were actually serving to us. Add to that the uninspired service, and we felt like we weren't appreciated as customers. Maybe if I didn't have such fond memories of how the restaurant used to be years ago this wouldn't have been such an issue. But it really felt like we lost a special place. read more

I have been wanting to try Half Day Cafe for quite some time. I had brunch around the Holiday's with a dear friend. The food was delicious. I had an oat milk latte and the breakfast panini with hash browns. The sandwich has eggs, spinach, ham and cheese. The ingredients are simple, but the flavor combination was excellent. Plus I love panini sandwiches. One thing I want to mention is it is extremely loud when it's busy. I came on a Sunday and it was a full house. I could barely hear my friend. She also has hearing issues so it was difficult to hear each other. Besides parking on the street there is a parking lot behind the restaurant. I've been here a few times. They're pretty busy all the times I've been there for breakfast/brunch. The place is pretty big. The wait has never been too long and the staff has been nice. It's convenient if you take classes at the Marin Community College, as it's literally less than a block away. There's parking in the back but it gets full fast. You can try and find street parking (which is often limited to time) or pay $4 to park in the Marin Community College lot...and not worry about getting ticketed. I always heard the scones were popular here but every time I went they were sold out. Surprisingly, they had some when I went. These were HUGE! They were more like mini loaves. They came with softened butter that had a hint of orange or apricot (reminded me of the taste of jam). Unfortunately, I thought these were just ok. They were too dry for my taste. I had cut these in half to split amongst the table and it crumbled a lot. Our table ordered the veggie/tofu scramble & 2 eggs w/bacon and hash browns. The hash browns were cooked just right. A little crispy on the outside and not dry on the inside. All the dishes were good. I forgot to take pictures of the main dishes but will add next time I go again! I'm a big fan of huevos rancheros ( as it's quite filling) so when I saw that on the menu, I knew I wanted to give it a try. The portion size was very generous and it was a good pick as a brunch item. Was not the best huevos rancheros I've ever had but it was ok and got the job done. I LOVED the crispy chip they put in the beans. Too bad there was only 1...that chip was a 10/10 and I gladly would have had more with my meal. To drink, I had a "freshly squeezed" orange juice, however, it did not taste like fresh orange juice to me and had that carton orange juice taste to it. The service was very fast and efficient! Another reviewer mentioned the same, that maybe the oil was old. I tried to ignore it but it didn't go away, and I didn't end up finishing them. The California Benedict also just didn't taste good. My mom mentioned her quiche also didn't taste good, and I noticed she didn't finish her potatoes either -- and we love to eat! The matcha latte was ok but needed added sugar. I didn't even finish it. My mom's chai latte was better. Service was lacking as well. It took a long time for them to take our order. Ambiance was good. Plenty of sunshine. And parking. The place was pretty busy but I have no idea why. Maybe we ordered the exact wrong things but I won't be giving this place another chance. Delicious pastries to choose from as an appetizer before or after your meal. The giant bisquits are my jam, and speaking of jam It's the real deal, quality fruit in a glass jar, not a little plastic package. The little things like this, the friendly service, and quality food make the difference in why this place receives my 5 stars. Half Day Café is such a great brunch spot and I've been twice with my bf's family. Their pastries are always really good and I enjoy the coffee as well. The most recent time I went, I just ordered eggs and hashbrows and a cup of soup on the side. My over medium eggs were cooked to my liking and some dashes of Tabasco made the perfect bites. The hash browns are crispy and are so good with some ketchup. And I know that sourdough toast is pretty basic but it was so good to have with their butter! The chicken noodle soup was just okay, but they accidentally brought out another order so we basically got another one for free. I tried my bf's caprese sandwich and it was really good! Soft buttery bread on the outside and plenty of mozzarella and pesto on the inside. We were able to bring our dog along and eat in the patio, so that was a big plus for us too. But we were meeting a good friend who was visiting from out of town and this location was convenient for her. It was good for a bite and catching up. They were moderately busy for a Thursday morning. We started with coffees and a cappuccino. I ordered eggs benedict. The eggs were well cooked with runny yolks and a well toasted english muffin beneath. The home fried red potatoes were pretty good but they could have plated half as much. Hubs had green eggs and ham (he said they were only "okay") and our friend had pancakes, scrambled eggs and breakfast sausage. She finished the pancakes but picked at her proteins. Service was efficient and cheerful, and we had a lovely visit. I kept my eye on the dining room to make sure we weren't holding up the table (there was always something open). It wasn't until we left that we realised we had been there over two hours - oops! It is a popular location.
