Service was prompt, friendly and accommodating (they brought a cup of water for my bestie (see pic). There was an odd thing... they have you go inside to pay for your order, before you receive your food. Presume it's because they do take out. The server put a number on my table so food is delivered correctly. A good thing... the server repeated my order back to me with all the instructions for what was ordered and how it was to be prepared. The most redeeming aspect of my visit was the quality exhibited in all of the aspects of the eatery. This appeared to be a family owned establishment who served fresh, well prepared meals, who treated all of their guests as family members, and who did not go out of their way to say farewell to their guests but, instead, stated their "see you next time" naturally. It is always a pleasure to find a natural, old time cafe that treasures their guests and creations of their meals. When I was looking for a coffee shop this place came up and it wasn't exactly what I had anticipated. A very very 1950s style of a diner with a lot of really great smelling home-cooked meals inside. Everything seem to have pork or some sort of meat, which my stomach can't handle and looked a little too greasy for me, but the pastries looked good and it seemed like everybody got their breakfast sandwiches to go, but there were some customers sitting and they had corn beef hash that looked delicious! There were also another set of customers with French toast and pancakes, which also looked delicious. I was actually looking for a gluten-free item at a red whale café, so I couldn't eat any of these delicious looking pastries. Instead, I ended up getting a large organic breakfast blend coffee and that was only three dollars. Pretty good considering it was organic, and at least a 20 ounce cup!! This restaurant also had a handful of drinks in the back as well as ice cream bars you could buy like in the old-fashioned freezer style. Lol very throwback to the 50s and 60s style of diner. Especially their menu board. Lol I think they should turn it into a retro joint and change the name. Hee. Along with their old-fashioned theme and menu board, they had a number of Greek items on a white expo board. I wanted to take a picture, but the line chef was watching me and they could tell I wasn't a regular. Lol so I felt a little shy. Hee. The coffee was a little stronger than I had anticipated, but it was still good. The gentleman who was at the register was very helpful and actually apologize for not having any gluten-free items. As I went out to my car to see what happened to the directions I realized around the corner was the place I was trying to go, The red whale café. Not this one, The Redwood café. Lol oops! My family and I recently moved into the neighborhood and stumbled across Redwood Cafe, and it has quickly become one of our favorite local spots. Although they're only open from 6am-3pm, this is absolutely a place you can't skip out on. They offer a great selection of breakfast and lunch options, plus a Greek menu that gives you even more to try. One of our favorite things is that they rotate different soups almost daily--there's always something new and comforting. The owner, Leo, and his entire staff are truly wonderful and make you feel welcome the moment you walk in. The cafe itself is small, cozy, and full of locals who clearly love being there--you can feel the happy, community vibe while dining. Redwood Cafe consistently goes above and beyond with customer service. I often bring my mother with me, and they genuinely treat people like family. We love this place so much that we try to stop by at least once a week. Thank you for the delicious paninis, amazing soups, and the great selection of desserts. No clue how the food is, I WAS going to try it, but the disrespect from the shop owner that I have received 3 separate times is unbelievable. I walk places, yet I am harassed about "not being allowed to park my car in his lot" Well it's HARD TO PARK A CAR WHEN YOU WALK! Highly HIGHLY discouraging. I feel bad for the customers who deal with him "running out of his store and yelling 'hey you better not be parked in this lot'" really encourages people. Their french toast just tastes like cooked egg; they taste as though they had been made with 10+ eggs. The pancakes are extremely mediocre. Onion rings: 5 stars. A good size portion of onion rings, the onions themselves are sweet perfectly fried great tasting batter with a touch of salt. Great on their own, or in my case I used a little bit of ranch dressing and a couple of them I decided to dip in Heinz 57 ketchup. (I dislike other brands of ketchup, so bonus points for them). Greek salad: 4 stars I had a bite of their Greek salad. It was a large salad, but still somewhat expensive for what it was. Since I did not order this a dish I did not want to steal anymore of the delicious feta cheese because there wasn't that much on the salad to begin with. The salad was nice and cold the lettuce was crisp and there was a decent amount of olives and onion. The house may dressing was delicious from what I could taste. Overall this is a good place to stop for lunch if you find yourself in San Rafael, and want something easy that also supports local, small business. I wished I had purchased some baklava that they had in the glass case. One could tell this was homemade as they were still in the Pyrex dish used to bake them! I like this place. I always get their soup,,,, my favorite is the potato leek soup and their minestrone. Soup is soup. I have no idea why so many people say the owner is grumpy??? Every time I went he was nice. He says thank you and hands me my food and then I am on my way. I usually go in the afternoon an hour before they close so maybe the people saying he's grumpy are coming in the morning. I would be grumpy if I had to work in the morning too so whatever. Their soup is 8$ and comes with a sourdough roll. Maybe a little expensive but whatever everything is expensive after the pandemic. This place hit the mark for a quick lunch with superb service and flavor. We both got the Gyros Special (we both opted for lamb) with different sides.
