Dijon mustard chicken sandwich with fries

Walt from Walt's Adventures here in San Rafael, California. Today, I am dining in the Redwood Cafe. This cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating and served both breakfast and lunch. The most redeeming aspect of my visit was the quality exhibited in all of the aspects of the eatery. This appeared to be a family owned establishment who served fresh, well prepared meals, who treated all of their guests as family members, and who did not go out of their way to say farewell to their guests but, instead, stated their "see you next time" naturally. It is always a pleasure to find a natural, old time cafe that treasures their guests and creations of their meals. The Redwood Cafe is one that I will treasure for they have and continue to do things the caring way.

    Organic coffee!

When I was looking for a coffee shop this place came up and it wasn't exactly what I had anticipated. A very very 1950s style of a diner with a lot of really great smelling home-cooked meals inside. Everything seem to have pork or some sort of meat, which my stomach can't handle and looked a little too greasy for me, but the pastries looked good and it seemed like everybody got their breakfast sandwiches to go, but there were some customers sitting and they had corn beef hash that looked delicious! There were also another set of customers with French toast and pancakes, which also looked delicious. I was actually looking for a gluten-free item at a red whale café, so I couldn't eat any of these delicious looking pastries. Instead, I ended up getting a large organic breakfast blend coffee and that was only three dollars. Pretty good considering it was organic, and at least a 20 ounce cup!! This restaurant also had a handful of drinks in the back as well as ice cream bars you could buy like in the old-fashioned freezer style. Lol very throwback to the 50s and 60s style of diner. Especially their menu board. Lol I think they should turn it into a retro joint and change the name. Hee. Along with their old-fashioned theme and menu board, they had a number of Greek items on a white expo board. I wanted to take a picture, but the line chef was watching me and they could tell I wasn't a regular. Lol so I felt a little shy. Hee. The coffee was a little stronger than I had anticipated, but it was still good. The gentleman who was at the register was very helpful and actually apologize for not having any gluten-free items. As I went out to my car to see what happened to the directions I realized around the corner was the place I was trying to go, The red whale café. Not this one, The Redwood café. Lol oops! See what happens when it rains?! But at least I found another little diner spot for breakfast! Hee

THE no-nonsense last stop for great breakfast/lunch headed north in 101 out of San Rafael. They take cards/ApplePay. There're outdoor picnic tables and sometimes fog so it'sinside you go - but hey it's steps away from the Bay. Breakfast is tasty and large and they serve you at one of the clean tables in the tidy big dining room. It's right off the freeway at Lucas Valley Rd. Informal and friendly. The menu is basic - good basic breakfast, good coffee.

Had an excellent Reuben sandwich today with fries. I asked for light sauce and got just that. Perfect. Very lean pastrami.

Greek salad: 4 stars, very yummy

Rocky's Quality Meats is the perfect name for them because they do have quality meats. I've ordered their turkey and cranberry panini a couple times as well as the rueben and the tomato and pesto panini. They don't skimp on the quantity of meat in the sandwiches either. They are tucked inside the Santa Venetia market and are a separate business. You have to pay for whatever you ordered at the counter and not the front cashier. Besides their sandwiches they also offer homemade sides, various raw meats, sausages, frozen ravioli and they bbq ribs and chicken outside the market every Friday. The guys behind the counter are always fast and friendly. Be prepared for a long line during the lunch hour. It's worth the wait.

It's inside the market but it's own business (as I understand, partners with the SV Market). It's open Monday-Saturday and they offer top quality meats - from seafood, locally sourced free range chicken, beef and more. I love their homemade Chicken Apple Sausage while my wife prefers their spicy Italian Sausage. We have also enjoyed their sandwiches (beware around 12noon there is a line from folks working at the Marin Civic Center). Our favorite is their Reuben sandwich - with pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand island dressing then heated in a Panini press. And most every Friday Dante and team are out front smoking and barbecuing. Folks in the community know to come by for Chicken, Ribs, and Tri-tip. Friendly service, reasonable prices and high quality food can be found at Rocky's Quality Meats.

I was intrigued because they had Dutch crunch bread and as everyone knows, we all love that Dutch crunch! Unfortunately Marin doesn't have many places with Dutch crunch roll sandwiches, seems like sourdough is more popular on this side of the bridge. Finding the storefront wasn't too hard. It's located up a hill next to an urgent care. Parking was fairly easy in the structure. I ordered the Hot Chicken Club sandwich ($11.45) on Dutch crunch bread. To start, the bread was okay. Wasn't exactly crunchy but nothing like a quick oven bake at home can't fix. The sandwich lists- breaded chicken, bacon, pepper jack cheese, lettuce (romaine), tomato and chipotle aioli. I was sort of expecting the sandwich to have a bigger spice kick because of the "hot" in the name of the sandwich. It wasn't spicy at all unfortunately. I did appreciate that it was not over saucy and it was easy to handle the sandwich when eating. I was half expecting the breaded chicken to be crispy but it wasn't sadly. There was only 1 piece of bacon on the sandwich. The ratio of meat (chicken and bacon) to veggie (tomato and romaine) was fairly even. For the price and size, it was okay. It is a tad smaller than the sandwiches I've seen at other places like Michael's sourdough. The storefront was fairly large with lots of into and outdoor seating. The two people working seemed nice. Hopefully they have more influx of customers due to having urgent care nearby. Due to the location, I feel like not many people know about this place since it's not the easiest to get to if you don't have a car. Overall, I may come back and try another sandwich in the future if I'm nearby but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Embarrassingly for Marin, only two restaurants made the list--including Lou's. It definitely lives up to its reputation. First, yes, it takes calling often! If you can't get through, don't despair. At 6:15 when I picked up my order, people were still able to walk up and order, although only a few entree choices were left. Everything we had was just so flavorful. The fried chicken was the favorite, rhen the beef birria. But the fried shrimp (which was pretty spicy!) and herby roast chicken was also delicious.
