There's something special I feel when I walk into Rustic Bakery. Perhaps part of it is its classic California breakfast cafe vibe. While it seems as if the menu is limited, when I review it to make a decision for that visit, it's actually kind of challenging--so many options sound appealing! This visit I chose Avocado Toast; I'm grateful that gluten-free bread is an option. I also chose the chai with almond milk. The other non-dairy option is oat milk. We found a quiet table in the back. The metal chairs are hard on one's backside, and I imagine it's so there's quicker turnover since it's a smaller-sized cafe. You bus your own table into the plastic bins as you exit. read more

Beautiful new Rustic Bakery location in Hamilton Marketplace shopping Center, off 101N in Novato. It's large and bright and clean inside. I love all things Rustic Bakery and appreciate that I can find their boxed cookies and crackers at my local markets in HBG! But so fun to visit an actual Rustic Bakery location. On my recent visit I grabbed a pre-made turkey baguette (good bread makes a sandwich!) and ordered an iced tea. Both offered fresh and clean flavors. Good food! Good view/location! Good and friendly vibes! I only know "Rustic Bakery" because of their snacks/products in the supermarkets, but wow, an actual Rustic Bakery & Cafe here! I opted for their quiche of the week (broccoli, cauliflower, cheddar cheese) and a beef barley soup. (They seem to have 2 options for their quiche -they also had bacon/onion/gruyere- and 2 options for their soup -they also had minestrone) Their quiche is actually a little softer and lighter than I thought (which is good since most of the ones I've had are dense), and packed with flavor! Their soup is piping hot and doesn't taste like the ones you just reheat and done; I like it! Although it was a cloudy day, I love the wide window view of the street haha. The almond croissant was probably the best I've had - lots of filling and it is absolutely covered with almonds! We also got the breakfast panini and breakfast burrito - both were good! The only problem with this business is that I sometimes go too late and some of the delicious, perfectly cooked baked goods aren't available. But that's on me. Our family loves the almond croissants (large, flaky croissants with a layer of sweet almond paste and sliced almonds on top) , the cheddar scallion scones (savory, filling and best when warmed), and the ham and cheese croissants (savory, salty goodness). I went to this bakery many years ago so today coming home from Petaluma I thought it would be a great place to stop for a coffee and some food. I placed my order for a latte, a premade (!) sandwich and a container of soup from the case at 9:29am with Linda N. She was pleasant and friendly. It wasn't a terribly busy morning ... people were getting their bakery items immediately and their coffees were coming out quickly. Except mine (?) So about 25 minutes pass and Linda notices that I am still standing there . She asked if I was still waiting for my coffee and I said yes I am. So she seems appropriately surprised and asked someone to prepare my coffee. I was standing waiting for such a long time that I saw people coming in, ordering, paying, receiving their drinks promptly. I said you know I've watched at least TEN people come in behind me and get their coffee served right away. (They looked like regulars, chatting with the staff, sharing baby pics on phones etc... this is what I witnessed). Linda exclaimed that oh they were just super busy today, turns to waive her hand toward the coffee tickets ... (all... TWO of them)... and lots of prepaid online orders ...Actually no Linda... I watched the customers come in behind me , order with you and pay you. I've been standing here watching tickets grabbed and coffee prepared while mine was skipped ... pretty mugs of beautiful cappuccino etc passing by me on trays for the people dining in (by the way there were approx 15 people in the cafe) I said I really find this unacceptable and quite frankly, rude! It was rude!! She didn't seem to care at all so I told her I was going to write a negative review of my experience ... her response was to whisper loudly to the lady now finally making my coffee that I was going to write a poor review. All I expected quite honestly was an apology... but no. 30 minutes later I received my coffee and left. The coffee was divine, the turkey Swiss baguette sandwich was .. meh... and the artichoke leek soup tasted worse than baby food. Did anyone taste the final product ?? Decided to try this place again. Ordered online, came into pickup and waited and waited and waited to be helped. Then someone came in for pickup behind me, and they got helped right away. Literally looked right over my shoulder to help the person behind me. But at least the salad had 6 croutons this time. I've always seen their crackers at grocery stores, but never knew they had an actual coffee shop/sandwich shop! I was pleasantly surprised to hear of this being so close in Novato!! And a quaint little downtown area with street lights to iconically mark the ages, this well kept delicate Cafe is in the middle of town! There were two cashiers, as well as some people working in the back, preparing the food and an open window area, where one could watch the bakers at work kneeding the dough and preparing for war delicious decadent, desserts. My boyfriend and I wanted something small, so we just got the chicken salad sandwich on gluten-free bread. It was OK. The gluten-free bread was nice that they had available, but the bread itself was incredibly dry and heavy feeling. I, personably have slight celiac disease, so I need to change my diet. My boyfriend puts up with it and he's very understanding. Lol . The bread I buy is about $7/loaf at sprouts and is very light and tastes like normal wheat bread. Sadly, the bread/gluten-free bread that rustic bakery offered wasn't to my liking, but the chicken salad was very tasty, fresh and I liked the almond touch within the salad itself. I know a handful of, restaurants are changing their versions of chicken salad due to nut, allergies and tree allergies versus planted nuts. I still haven't figured out the difference, I'm sorry if you have an allergy. Hee Nevertheless, I like the fact they offered organic coffee, but it was only a dark roast, french fries. My stomach can't handle that so I didn't indulge in the tasting. We went around 1 PM so I guess all the morning pastries were gone but they had an amazing selection of cookies that were massive! I wish they offered gluten-free versions ! I probably ask for too much, but only time can tell. Their molasses cookie looked delicious!! This is a very cute little coffee shop. They are know for their pastries and there is a window where you can see into the kitchen where they make the pastries. Unfortunately when we got there, they were out of a lot of pastries so we didn't get to try them, but I've heard they are delicious. I ordered a hot matcha latte. They asked if I wanted vanilla in it, and I declined because I didn't want it to be too sweet, but then it had no sweetness. However, they have liquid sweetener at the bar, which is a really cool option that I wish more coffee shops had. I also like that the matcha powder wasn't pre-sweetened because the sweetness could be customized. I also had the Breakfast Panini. The bread was delicious and very fresh, with a bit of salt on top. The sandwich itself was pretty good but also pretty dry, so it definitely could have benefited from a sauce or something. I've come back to Rustic Bakery quite a few times over the years in hopes that I would like something to justify the price. But unfortunately I haven't found anything as of yet. I've tried the breads and pastries but nothing is as good as anything I could make at home. Usually the pastries are on the drier side. For the Meyer Lemon Croissant this was the case and honestly it was just overall disappointing. For $6.50 I was hoping atleast the filling would be good but not even that. The food here used to be outstanding, but in recent months, I've been disappointed time and again. Food is flavorless, so bland. Recently, I ordered the breakfast burrito which used to be so delicious. It was loaded with boring potatoes that looked boiled, it lacked flavor of any kind. On our way to SF the other day and we were thinking where to go for coffee and a croissant before the museum exhibit. Then I remembered - NOVATO! The Novato location is a great size, lots of indoor and outdoor tables, your choice. Look into the bakery bar to try and select your delicacy and Good Luck! There are so many great choices. I ordered Rustic Bakery about 20 times. Like you, I am still working from home, so healthy delivery is my lifeline. I'll never stop working from home who are we kidding? Really fresh cold salad makes me happy. When I am working, having a really fresh, cold salad delivered for my lunch makes me super happy! The inconsistent portion sizes are problematic. Some days I get a lot of salad and other days I wonder why they are selling this for the price they ask. Combine that with DoorDash fees, tip and now it's frustratingly bad. The service is great and the location looks good but the good tastes shockingly bad. We got the avocado toast and paid extra for bacon and egg. The bacon was the kind of cold precrumbled bacon that comes out of a shaker and the egg was old cold deli eggs. Despite costing $20 the whole thing tasted prepackaged because most of it was. Waited ten minutes for my latte before I went up to ask for it. "Oh, would you like it now?" was the response. No one was busy, just chatting. On the good side they have unsweetened almond milk and usually it's a smooth cup of Java. I wouldn't mind all the croissants 1/3 smaller and less expensive. Hard to eat all in one sitting without being crazy overfull. Sure I get a 2nd meal but do I want it again? Guess I'm picky. Still a go to place for me. But I do enjoy places where employees are welcoming and I feel good about spending my money. It's only occasionally true here. Recently I was in Novato visiting family and friends and it was time for a break. In desperate need for greens & AC (helllooo CA heatwave!) I found myself at Rustic Bakery. Quinoa & Veggie salad with miso dressing and homemade crackers was delicious and refreshing! I also enjoyed an iced tea and an oat milk latte after lunch. It was later in the day and a little more quiet - so I was able to enjoy a new book on my iPad and stay awhile. Staff were really friendly, and again the AC was perfect! Decent sandwich & salad shop, but overpriced. The Marin Melt was underwhelming for me, which I was most excited for. I thought the apples were going to be in the melt, but they were on the side and the cheese wasn't evenly distributed in the sando. To make it tastier I put them inside. Salad wise, the rustic chop is solid. One thing that was unorganized was how they would call out orders to some customers only and have others walk up to check if their order is done. Beware of ordering from Rustic Bakery if you are relying on a delivery service such as DoorDash or GrubHub. Three times in the past couple of months what was delivered wasn't what I had ordered. In each case I ordered a savory croissant (spinach/cheese; ham/cheese) but received sugary, overly-sweet pastries, which I hate. I assume this happened because Rustic had either run out of the savory croissants, or didn't have them to begin with. On the other hand, when I order sandwiches, I receive what I ordered. HEY, RUSTIC: Don't list items on the food delivery menus if you can't fill the orders for those items. read more
