While in Novato, I decided to stop by for a cup of coffee. The place seemed to be an old gas station converted into a coffee shop! However, after I got home and did a bit of research, I discovered otherwise! More on that later. Anyhow, it is a drive-through now. Cars pull over, stop, and associates walk over to take the orders. I decided to park and walk over to the window to place my order and take a closer look at the place. I ordered a drip coffee with milk, and they also serve pastries. I did not see any other items, like sandwiches, on their menu. The coffee was good. It had a strong, pleasant flavor and none of that funny aftertaste that some coffee beans have. The young man who took my order was very friendly and quick to get me on my way. Later, I learned that the building originally served as a drive-up bank before eventually becoming the coffee stand it is today. That unique history makes the setup even more interesting. read more

I stopped by Marin Coffee Roasters in Novato while staying with a friend, and I have to say--the drive-thru setup is brilliant. It was freezing outside, so being able to just roll up and grab a drink made everything so easy. I went for a matcha with almond milk, and honestly, it might have been one of the best matchas I've had. The speed of service was insane--it almost felt like my drink was ready to go the second I ordered--but it was clearly made with care because it tasted spot-on. And the matcha actually gave me that energizing boost I look for, which is rare these days since so many places either dilute it or don't make it properly. Consistent total fail! I have been to this drive through six times now and only once - 1 out of 6 times - was my order delivered as ordered. THIS COFFEE SHOP SERVED ME A LATTE SO DANGEROUSLY HOT IT MELTED THE LID. I've been coming to this coffee shop almost everyday when discovering it a month ago while caring for my sick grandmother in the area. I've never had an issue - until now, and what unfolded has been not only frustrating but deeply upsetting. On my recent visit, I was served a latte that was scalding to the point of being dangerous. The coffee was so boiling hot that I couldn't drink it but the little bit I did try burned my tongue severely. By the time it cooled enough to try, the plastic lid had melted due to the heat, spilling hot coffee which didn't even taste like coffee all over my car. I suffered a severe burn to my tongue and was left with a mess I had to throw out entirely. This was beyond unacceptable. The cup was made of paper, not equipped to handle such extreme temperatures, which raises serious questions about the safety standards of this establishment. I reported the incident to an employee, who apologized and promised me a refund. I appreciated their initial response, but after a week of waiting, no refund was issued. When I called to follow up today, I was met with shockingly unprofessional behavior. The employee I spoke with didn't know what I was referring to, so she asked a coworker for assistance. To my disbelief, I overheard the coworker telling her to "just hang up on her." Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of resolving a legitimate customer concern, the staff thought it was acceptable to mock me and ignore my issue entirely. I was polite throughout this process and simply wanted the refund I was promised. Not only was the refund still not issued, but I was treated with utter disrespect. When I called back to escalate the issue, I was again met with a dismissive attitude and empty promises of a callback--which, of course, never happened. This lack of accountability and blatant disregard for customer safety and satisfaction is astounding. For reference, there are laws in place that regulate the serving temperature of hot beverages to prevent injuries. The fact that this business disregarded those safety standards, resulting in severe burns to my tongue and property damage to my vehicle, is not just negligent--it's potentially illegal. This is no longer about the refund. It's about the unacceptable way this business treats its customers and their complete failure to adhere to basic safety and service standards. If I do not hear back by tomorrow, I will be filing a formal complaint and reporting this as fraud. I no longer feel comfortable supporting a business that disrespects its customers, ignores legitimate safety concerns, and allows its staff to engage in unprofessional and abusive behavior. If you value your safety and your dignity, I urge you to avoid Marin Coffee Roasters entirely. You deserve better coffee and better treatment. Honestly, I'm such a coffee snob. I used to be a barista at La Boulange bakery years ago. I am the person that loves to get coffee from hidden gems whenever I travel. Anything but Pete's and/or Starbucks, although I do like some of their coffees. This place is amazing! I first discovered Marin coffee roasters in San Anselmo. When I started going to the drive-through in Novato, Claire and Amaya were the sweetest duo! I had my dog with me, who is very cute I must say, and they were over the moon to meet her. Nice sunny space with friendly, experienced baristas pulling nice shots and making traditional espresso drinks. No fancy art here but it's a very smooth medium roast and they steam the milk correctly. Nice pastry selection and there is a patio area for sitting outside if it's not too cold. read more

Okay, so there are pros and cons with this review. Pro - During the week when I'm always in a hurry and don't have time to make my own coffee, I go here. I am definitely a returning customer because of how friendly and efficient the workers are during the morning rush. Some of them remember me and have brought me my coffee even before I order! They are amazing and I've never had an issue with them. They handle the rush of "hurry up and go" customers very well and you can tell that being quick is important to them. Kudos to the weekly workers! Con - I went here for the first time during the weekend. I drove through with the expectation that they will take care of me the same way they do during the week - but I was wrong. They are kids who are working during the weekend and as a normal weekly customer, I immediately noticed the difference in how they perform on the job. Complete black and white difference. They were SLOW. They took their sweet time and before you knew it, the line was growing behind me. The girl who helped me had to have been in high school, you can tell by her demeanor when she greeted me. Very dual, low energy "good morning" - uh wow, total shock to me given how friendly everyone else is! I ordered: 1 small coffee, black, no cream and no sugar and 1 small americano with TWO ADDED SHOTS. Big difference in drinks right? One will get you through the day and the other screams "get shit done!". I for one, cannot drink the "get shit done" because I'd be too busy getting done shitting. Anyways, when she brought the drinks out. I asked her "which one is the regular coffee and which one is the americano?" To my surprise she responded "I'm not really sure". What!? You're not sure which is which?? I responded with a very sarcastic "umm okay??" And she had nothing more to say, no apology, no checking to make sure, she just left and moved on. We removed the lids off both coffees when we got home and they looked alike I had to take a gamble on which was mine. To be continued as I haven't drank it yet... I'm disappointed that for a place I've had great customer service, I didn't receive that today. Traditional cappuccino? Nope, they start at the 12oz size just like at Starbucks and every other non high-end coffee shop. The Shot: Average. The Milk: I was already disillusioned so I forgot to ask. It wasn't anything special. Service: Friendly and quick. I was the only one there so it's hard to gauge. Ambiance: Not a sit-down place so not really relevant. Conclusion: I'm really sorry but this place is nothing special. If you don't like chain stores like Peet's or Starbucks, this place is fine, but if you're really into coffee, keep looking, I'll let you know when I find a great place in Novato, if such a place exists. This is one of the small jewels I have found while exiled to the suburbs that keeps me sane (the others being all the parking at Kaiser Novato, REAL Mexican food, and Orchid Blossom Nails) and has kept me from running in front of traffic on 101 south in an effort to go 'home.' It's now become a morning ritual: I pull up at MCR and pour me a hot, delicious cup of coffee to get me through my first few grueling hours at work (you know, checking email and Facebook, dodging calls, shuffling paperwork). It's the crew that makes this place - mostly college-aged folks with ready smiles and genuine friendliness. They've gotten to know me and depending on the hour of the day (AM - large coffee, lowfat milk, two sugars; PM - iced coconut latte) they often as not just walk up with my order already done. I try to tip them well because these guys work HARD and I can't even imagine the kind of fussy Marin County BS they must have to deal with ('yeah, give me a venti half-caf nonfat low-froth with a shot of hazelnut, and junior will have warmed lactose-free milk, please make sure it does not exceed exactly 90 degrees Fahrenheit,' sans thank you or tip). As an added bonus, you can buy a prepaid card there......i tend to load one up with $50 every so often and then I don't have to worry about having any cash (except for tips, hint hint) standing between me and my brain juice. This place really does add a bit of joy to my day. They're back in the Paradise Shopping Center where La Coppa used to be. They are now under the original owners. I went a couple of times when it was La Coppa and found their Chai Lattes to be sort of a watered milk with antifreeze sort of experience. Really, how does one mess up a Chai Latte? Heat milk, pour in predone Chai stuff and you are done. Anyhow, the place is starting to really pep up as the new/old owners begin adding things back into the place. The Chai is once again good and the real bonus for those of us that don't like to start our day with oatmeal is the breakfast burritos. They are just the right size, reasonably priced and full of flavor. I recommend the chorizo breakfast burrito. The quiche they have in the case also looks very tempting, though I haven't tried that yet. And, even at 7:30 a.m., the Coconut Almond Joy gelato in the case looks pretty appetizing as well. There is also a nice selection of pastries for you traditionalists that don't start your day with chorizo. The owner tells me that some light lunch offerings, such as gourmet soups, will be coming soon, which will be a nice alternative for those of us that work in the area and find ourselves at Paradise most lunches. That's nothing against Paradise, which is awesome, but one does need a little variety in life. In food, drink and service, the flavor and spirit are back at this spot. It's yet another bonus at a shopping center that has shown an amazing turnaround over the past few years. read more
