TLDR Absolutely amazing culinary creations, that elevate mundane menu offerings to fine art expressions. We just happened to stop in on Mother's Day, on a whim, as we were driving by. We were immediately impressed with the display of breads and pastries and the clean layout of the restaurant. After reviewing the menu descriptions, we decided to give them a try. I'm glad we did! Hot chicken and Croffle: First, this is not your average eggo waffle. They start with a lightly sweetened, waffle-pressed croissant under a tender moist chicken breast with a light and flaky crust with a pronounced crunch. The spiciness was enough to get your attention but not overpower the moist chicken or the waffle. Wow! Avocado toast: I'm not usually a fan of avocado toast but after watching the servers deliver more than a few to customers in the short time we were in line, I had to see what the appeal was. This was a work of literal art. The avocado was whipped and appeared to be piped onto the toast like icing on a fancy cake. Then it was carefully decorated with radishes, peppers and some other seasonings. It was delicious! The coup de gras was the Mandarin Mousse with madarin parfait, mandarin confit tenbrink olive oil chiffon and white chocolate. This looked like a tiny mandarin orange with a tiny peppermint striped straw sticking out of it! Every single bite was an adventure in the layering flavors. It was so delicate but the orange "peel" was actually textured white chocolate cooled to form a shell that you break through to get to the parfait and confit inside. Even the "straw" was white chocolate with a mint flavor. Excellent presentation and execution! Under-study uses a large array of organic ingredients and meats, locally sourced meats and a selection of wines, both local and international, which are on display in various refrigerators and shelves. There is also a food lab where they have classes at different times. I can't wait to come back and try more of their menu offerings
Under-Study is absolutely breathtaking inside and out! The dark green outside and the interior make it very welcoming to all guests. I saw this cafe pop-up in several IG posts, so I knew I had to check it out. It doesn't have a Michelin star, but is run by a Michelin team --- so to me, tomato, toMAHto. I got 3 items, all exquisite: 1. Honeycomb Iced Latte - This drink is exactly what you would expect; a proper iced latte topped with a substantial amount of sugary honeycomb. A few swirls later, and my entire drink was sweetened just right. There's nothing like the taste of sugary honeycomb. 2. Everything Knot - This was my highlight of the visit. I am from NJ, so I'm a bit of a Bagel snob, and yet, connoisseur. The way this Knot was layered and crafted made all right in the world. It was topped with fried scallions, and stuffed with green onion cream cheese. The worked said it must've been meant for me...it was the last one of the day! 3) Pain au Chocolat - Visually stunning. The layers around the pastry make it crackly and so decadent. The downside? The actual chocolate! It was a skinny line of chocolate in my pastry, barely non-existent. Loved the pastry, the "au chocolat" part? Needs work. All in all, I was extremely pleased by Under-Study! I love trying "novel items", and I heard they have a Lobster Corn Dog?? Guess that will have to wait til' next time!
Overall? Totally worth the drive. Understudy feels like the kind of place that could only exist in the Napa Valley. Clean, curated interior, great energy, and the kind of pastry case that immediately makes you abandon any sense of restraint. Come hungry because the menu rewards excess. Some items stood out more than others, but honestly, everything ranged from good to excellent. The coffee was dialed in, the pastries felt intentional instead of trendy, and the whole experience had that rare combination of polish without pretension. Absolutely worth returning for Parking? Lot We had: Coffee (5/5): exactly what good cafe coffee should be. Balanced, flavorful, and structured enough to stand up to the sweeter pastries without getting lost. Smooth profile, clean finish, no bitterness Bacon Sampler (Benton's, Nueske's, Hill's, Candied) (5/5): sounds gimmicky until it hits the table. Then you realize someone actually thought this through. Each bacon had its own personality, but the candied bacon was the standout. Perfect balance of smoke, salt, fat, and sweetness Smoked Trout Rillettes (5/5): this was excellent. The smoked trout had real depth without becoming overpowering, and the creme fraiche completely changed the game by adding a cool, tangy richness that balanced everything out. Spread onto the bread, it created those perfect bites where texture and flavor all lock together at once Calistoga Crunch (5/5): absolute chaos visually, somehow beautiful anyway. It looked like something your toddler proudly makes during Christmas and you hang on the tree because you weirdly love it. But flavorwise, this thing was seriously dialed in! Sweet, crunchy, salty, textured, layered. Every component worked. One of the better cookies I've had in a long time Strawberry Tea Cake (5/5): dense in the way a good tea cake should be, but still light enough to avoid feeling heavy. The strawberry flavor came through naturally without turning artificial or overly sweet. Simple yet elegant, and incredibly easy to keep eating Pain au Chocolat (4/5): still good, but the weakest of the group. The pastry leaned a little brittle and slightly dry, lacking some of that buttery pull and softness you want from a great pain au chocolat. Under-Study took over what used to be Dean & Deluca Flagship store right next to the MAC Art Museum, and right across from V. Sattui Winery. I first heard about this place through my sister-in-law, so we had to check it out while she was in town. The spot is run by Michelin-level chefs and features an open kitchen concept, offering tapas, pastries, butcher, coffee, wine, and more. There's a small dining area inside and have a back room. More eating outside though. FOOD REVIEW Smoked Trout Rillettes - 5/5 So good. The trout spread paired with crispy salmon skin as the "chip" was freaking amazing. Black Truffle Fries - 5/5 Incredible. The smoked onion aioli really made it--we couldn't get enough. Hot Chicken n Croffle - 5/5 Everything worked perfectly together. Chicken was also tender, moist and crip. So clutch. Siciliano Sandwich - 5/5 Fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients and meats. Lobster Corn Dog - 3/5 A lot of hype, but just okay. Nothing exciting about this, and the most expensive from our tab. The staff was super friendly, and overall it was a great experience. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try the pastries and more items on the menu.
Stopped in here randomly for a pick me up before wine tasting and what a pleasant surprise. Lots of delicious pastry offerings, and good coffee selections! The honey comb latte and the lobster corn dog with caviar were the standouts for the group, but definitely on the pricier side. Expected probably for this area. They also seemed to have a small meats/butcher type section with some quality looking offerings. Some seating inside as well as outside, ample parking, and super friendly service!
Bougie and fresh bakery in the middle of Napa! Saw this place recommended by a food/travel account on IG and saved it for our upcoming trip. It was an easy drive from downtown Napa. They seem to be popular for their fancy corn dog, but since it was early-ish in the day we didn't want anything too savory, so we opted for the hashbrowns and a croissant. Ordered online a bit before we arrived, which was timed perfectly - once we arrived, they had our order ready for us. We also picked up some other things that looked tasty - the orange looking pastry was so cute (I forgot the name) and was also delicious. Overall, loved the vibes and freshness of the space. The food is clearly made with love and care, and the menu is creative to keep you wanting more.
Loved their lobster corn dog, similar to the flavor of lobster balls from hot pot, with a corn dog crust, topped with caviar and a sort of crema. Def a nice little snack and piping hot. Also loved their honey comb latte with the crisp honeycomb that melts into the drink. Cannele was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and had the signature burnt caramel and rum flavor I love. We also got a cold brew but def the most basic of the selections. Lots of great cafe selections to choose from and all done up so well. Would def pay them another visit before we leave Napa if up in this area. Right next to Press and tucked to the left when facing the building. Great service, yummy bites, and perfect for those who love cafe culture.
Look no further if you're seeking the BEST BUTTER CROISSANT in all of Wine Countrdy. R In fact, it's one of the best spots in town to grab breakfast/brunch, a glass of wine, and or to pick up quality ingredients for a picnic, or even dinner. We came early in the morning and ordered coffee and a few bites for breakfast. PRO TIP: go to the outdoor patio next door at Press and enjoy your food there! Chicken and Waffles were fire and all the vienoisserie we ordered. Went to Moulin in Napa the next day and wasn't impressed.
Congratulations Under-Study. You have knocked it out of the park and have inspired me to live life differently. The place is bustling with workers who seem to know what they are doing and they care about their productions. The location is beautiful. I'm trying to figure out how I can upgrade my kitchen with these colors. Tiffany blue, pink and yellow complement each other so well. The food has impressed me to the core. I love being inspired to learn new skills so I can copy recipes. We had the pig ears (phenomenal), butternut squash soup (life changing) and the Siciliano sandwich (incredible). The food is outstanding! For drinks, I had an unsweetened matcha. It was probably the best matcha I've ever had. My husband had espresso. It was at least as good as the espresso we had in Italy. Well done, Under-Study. I'm proclaiming myself as your biggest fan!
This is a great bakery to stop at while you're in Napa Valley. Of course there's the hype but I do have to say their baked goods were good, some were very rich, but hey, go big or go home. My friends and I also ordered some breakfast items, one of which was the chicken and waffles and I do have to say that was worth it. We also ordered hash browns which were tasty but did not realize how small they were but once again, rich in flavor. We decided to eat next door in the covered patio which was a nice option. Overall, I think this place is worth trying out, lucky for us it was not busy when we got there early. Prices are a little high but it's Napa and you can tell they use quality ingredients.
Stopped in here for some bakery items and got the pain au chocolate, persimmon bread, mandarin mousse, sour cream and onion cream cheese pastry and seasonal fruit tart. I really savored the sour cream and onion cream cheese pastry and the chilled mandarin mousse. All the flaky pastries were on the crispy/firm/crunchy side. I would give the heavier food a shot next time as I saw some unique variations of classic meals - caviar corn dog and chicken and waffles. Staff were kind, and it's a lovely cafe to spend time in. There's some seating inside as well as a nice patio area with a water fountain.
Small bakery with a sleek interior located in Saint Helena. The pastries and other bites made here look amazing and sound delicious. We were dining in the area and I was looking for a baguette to go along with some charcuterie we picked up earlier in the area. We had just eaten so this particular visit was really to come in and get some bread (although I really want to come back to try their pastries and other wonderful looking creations). The service is friendly and they try to help you as soon as you are ready to order. It was also later in the day so it seemed like the options, at least on display, were limited. But I didn't take too much time looking because we already knew what we wanted. There is also a variety of coffee or caffeinated as well as refreshing beverages available to order and it looks like they have a beer/ wine license here in case you wanted to dine in. Just a really great place that left a great impression and I will definitely be hitting this place up the next time I'm in the area. read more

Went here a few weeks back. Have to say this is a good resturant. Casual from the outside without delicate touches & gourmet dishes when you walk in. Mainly outdoor seating so make sure you visit on a sunny day. & quite popular during lunch time! I ordered the Ahi Tuna Nachos with Chipotle & citrus blend which was a meal in itself with plenty of big portions! My friend ordered the lobster caviar cordog, pig ears, & beef potstickers. Both had a great amount of detail- although a bit on the lavish side as far as the bill. Hosts were friendly enough- placed our order & waited. While not a traditional dining experience where a waitress make check up in you this is more of a self serve resturant in which water stations & utensils are outside at your convience. All hosts are indoors if needed. Good for the experience. read more

Service was amazing!! Really enjoyed their coffee. However, pastries were okay especially for that price point. I was expecting a buttery croissant taste but the base was very bland. We also got a filled croissant and it barely had any filling inside. It was good but not worth the money. read more

We were drawn here by their unique menu. We arrived 30 minutes before closing, so many of their pastries were already sold out. Enjoyed lunch on the patio: a hot Siciliano Sandwich, Salmon Skin (crispy), and Duck confit. Everything was tasty. read more

Pretty underwhelming for the hype, value, and taste. Maybe if it wasn't so hyped up I wouldn't be as underwhelmed. The displays are quite pretty, but it is packed and there isn't a ton of space inside. There is patio seating in the back apparently, but I didn't venture back there. When I went on a Saturday, it was packed with people taking photos of everything. I got a few pastries to try and the portions are small for the price in my opinion. I tried the double chocolate cookie ($5), lemon pound cake, chocolate croissant (which is presented as a stick) and iced coffees. Overall, I thought it was all just okay. Ice coffees were watery and not that flavorful. Pastries tasted okay, but nothing to write home about. Wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. The cookie was the worst (texture wasn't great, tasted stale), lemon pound cake was standard, and the chocolate croissant was unique in presentation but not taste. They also have savory snacks like lobster caviar hot dogs, a 'deli' with freshly cut meats, etc. I really wanted to try the lobster caviar hot dog but I saw the table next to me get one and it was tiny for $32. Probably wouldn't go back again anytime soon. read more
Cute little bougie cafe jugs outside of St. Helena. It's owned by the same people as The Press. I love the simple menu that has something for everyone. As a goodie, also love watching how they prepare everything. Highly enjoyed the everything knot pastry and the trout rillet. BF enjoyed his breakfast sandwich orange juice was fresh and bright. Wanted a second glass but they ran out. Definitely a great place to catch a bite. Downside is severe lack of seating. read more

Stopped in for an afternoon coffee and sweet treat. It wasn't busy so we ordered immediately. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside. It was very nice and clean. The honeycomb latte was delicious. We tried the three different pastries and all were very yummy. 10/10 would recommend. Will definitely be back! read more

Exceptional experience First visit. Went there with my best friend. Who loved the place. Had some coffee, a baguette and some pastries. Great attentive and friendly service with knowledgeable hosts Small place. Really can use some seating to allow us to hang out and enjoy the food and drinks. Some high chairs on the tables inside might also help. I will be back frequently when I am here. I highly recommend this place. read more

Located next to the wine museum. This is an upscale cafe, featuring espresso drinks, gourmet bakery products, savory entrees. Amazing breakfast options: lobster omelette, be sure to try their chicken waffle! Spicy chicken breast over a sweet, thin waffle. The kitchen looks like a Michelin rated restaurant! read more
Beautiful pastries in a cute spot! The food here isn't cheap, but youre paying for Michelin quality at a more affordable price. All of the pastries that we tried were delicious, and we even came back on another day to try more! Their pastry menu changes daily. The pastries were all delicious, but the sleeper hit for me was fried salmon skin. It's supposed to be a side for trout dip, but they let us just order the salmon skin and it was so good! read more
Good and convenient spot to stop by before or after your wine tasting adventures! I shared 3 pastries and my favorite out of them was the Pain Suisse Reuben. This came with house-cured American wagyu, pastrami, sauerkraut, cheese, and dressing. The pastry was very flavorful, tangy from the sauerkraut and flaky from the croissant. The other two I tried was the Breakfast Sandwich and Everything Knot. Pretty standard fillings but the croissant/bread is soo good and buttery. read more
It is a bit simplistic to call Under-Study a cafe because it serves coffee, baked goods, breakfast, and lunch. Everything at Under-Study is interesting and creative. We came at about 10:45 am and ordered breakfast, including the chocolate croissant, breakfast sandwich, bacon sampler, and beef fat hashbrowns. The croissant is just like the one at Le Comptoir at the Ritz in Paris. The pastry is crisp and flaky and with an ample amount of chocolate running throughout. At 11 am, the menu segues to lunch, and the menu gets even more fun. We ordered wagyu skewers, pig ears, and got to try the viral lobster corndog. All of these were so good. The wagyu were these tender, delectable bites with an herbaceous topping. The pigs ears were neat, a bit crispy and very caramelized with a sweet, spicy, and sour sauce. The lobster corn dog was a luxurious treat, and apparently was heavily featured at Bottle Rock music festival this year, with a lobster sausage in the middle, and generous amounts of caviar topping it. It was a very fun treat to try. We ate inside the cafe but they also make the Press outdoor patio available as well. Staff was very attentive and warm. Overall, it was clear that Under-Study is so ambitious and aspirational as an eatery with delicious bites. read more

Stopped by for a coffee break on a rainy weekday afternoon, this cafe is absolutely adorable and it has a very artsy and chic vibe to it. The iced honeycomb latte and love potion (white mocha with raspberry flavor) were absolutely fantastic. The staff very kindly offered the option to bring down the sweetness a notch which I recommend if you don't want the drink to be too sweet. I thought the honeycomb latte was one of the best tasting coffee drinks I've had recently (I did not adjust the sweetness), the crunchy caramelized honeycomb bits added such a fun and delicious touch! The love potion was packed with raspberry flavor which perfectly complemented the creamy white chocolate and it was perfect with the sweetness toned down just a bit. Can't wait to come back to try their baked goods/food next time! read more

I was really excited to try their lobster corndog and was disappointed. It did not taste good. I've had a better lobster corndog in Walnut Creek. I really liked their avocado toast. The everything knot was good but was kind of hard. Most of the pastries didn't really taste fresh. The cookie was good though. Service was good. read more
A must when in St. Helena. A high end cafe that serves gourmet deli items and elevated patisserie. The concept- fast food meets fine dining. It's a modern causal vibe - wait in line order at the counter. A showcase of their patisseries are available to view, to help you decide what to order. I ended up ordering 3 items, I really couldn't decide. I ordered to go: spiced persimmon cake, chocolate chip cookie and the Calistoga cookie ( oats, figs, pecans, coconut, milk chocolate, caramel and golden raisins). The Calistoga cookie was my absolute favorite and it's gorgeous to look at. It's like eating a piece of art! The cafe also has lunch items, to go bougie lunch boxes and a butcher counter - meats, cheeses, seafood and charcuterie items. Seating is available inside and out. I'm a big fan of this place, I'll be sure to stop in whenever I'm in St. Helena. read more

Lobster caviar corn dog? Truffle fries? Say no more. I couldn't wait to try these luxe delectables. I also ordered the Sicilian Sando which I felt was better than the lobster caviar corn dog... I guess the soft on soft texture wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I loved the chai tho! I would def come back to try the pastries! Went to the MAC and had lunch at Under-Study. We both got the Hot Chicken N' Croffle. It was pretty good. Chicken was spicy, but not too much. The croissant waffle was tasty. I'd recommend trying ithis place out. We're going to go back. read more
Understudy is such a cute, elevated café right off the main highway in Napa. We weren't very hungry since we had just eaten, but we tried the chocolate chip cookie, the madeleine cookie, and a chai tea latte and everything was really good. The space is super cute with a few tables inside and outside, and it looks like there's a room for wine tasting. There's nothing else quite like it in the area, which makes it stand out. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. read more

It's a really fun and chic, upscale cafe concept. The food was overall pretty good! Be warned the portion sizes leaned on the smaller side. It feels like tasting menu size which is great if you want to try lots of things but not a win for the wallet. There are just a few high tables inside, otherwise you can sit at the patio shared with Press restaurant, where you can also order food. Good service. Gorgeous pastries that look like artwork. CONS The price. The portions. $32 for a tiny lobster caviar corn dog ( I did enjoy it tho!). The French toast stick was just fine--I wish it had a crunch to it but it was all soft. The octopus was good but not WOW worthy. PROS The chocolate croissant is in stick form and it tasted great! We liked our iced vanilla and caramel lattes! The syrups are made in-house! It's a unique dining experience. The interior design is gorgeous. They have a butcher, caviar, truffles, and more. Its all super cool fancy food offerings. Now they're offering cooking classes, which I have yet to experience. TLDR: it's pricey for what you get, the portions can be small, but it's a fun unique experience. Uhhhh a $32 Lobster Corn Dog? What kind of hella bougie millennial gimmicky ridiculousness is this?! I'll take 5! Opening this week is Michelin-starred, Press' new cafe: Under-Study at the former Dean & Deluca Building next to Napa's The MAC. We're here for their Sweet & Sour Pig Ears, my fav dish at Press but figure we try their signature snack as well, the Lobster Caviar Corn Dog. Under-Study is open for breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks. Fast-casual service. M E N U Breakfast bites (served until 11 am), apps/snacks, salads, sandwiches, vennoiseries, cookies, and jewel box desserts. Spritzers and wine available. S N A C K S * Sweet & Sour Pig Ears ($14) Deliciously crisp, chewy, and fatty with an addictive sweet & sour espelette glaze that was flavorful, punchy, and spicy (may be too spicy for some). Like crack. Not that I know how that tastes like. * Lobster Caviar Corn Dog ($32) This bougie snack got rave reviews from Bottlerock goers. A boudin-style "fun size" sausage made with fish mousse, steamed lobster, and herbs that's dipped in a GF batter and fried until golden brown. It's then topped with a remoulade sauce and Tsar Nicolai caviar. Slightly crunchy batter (a bit too thiccc tho) was a nice contrast to the bouncy seafood filling. The rich creamy tang of the remoulade complimented the sweetness of the filling with the caviar adding bursts of umami. TBH, it lowkey reminds me of Hong Kong style fish/seafood balls but sausage shaped. The lobster flavor kinda got lost into the mix. Glad I tried it once but wouldn't get it again. * Matcha Yuzu Cookie ($5) Gorgeous but looked better than it tasted. I My ideal cookie is crispy edges with a chewy center. This cookie was soft with a light earthy flavor, garnished with yuzu cream and matcha white chocolate (?) coins. Gripe: Wish they provided proper silverware. The compostable utensils broke when cutting into the pig ears. S E R V I C E Friendly and prompt during weekday lunch. A M B I A N C E Sleek and contemporary with playful touches (a bench modeled after a stick of butter), an open kitchen, and butcher counter. Several cafe mounted tables inside with plentiful tables outside. Most are high tops. P A R K I N G Ample free parking. Overall, Under-Study is an ideal pit stop for bougie snacks tho I wish they had more comfortable seating. read more
A friend told me about this place when I was at their house for dinner. They had this amazing Smoked Trout Rillette, a baguette, some cheeses they bought from here and they all were out of this world!! If I wasn't on a long drive home I would have bought that Trout Rillette; it was so creamy, but also fresh, citrusy, melt in your mouth deliciousness!! Everything at this place looks like perfection, straight out of a magazine, it doesn't even look real. I bought a chocolate croissant stick thing (no idea what it was called) and it was so delicious. It was flaky, rich, but also soft and doughy inside. Latte was also spot on. I can't wait until I'm back in town and they have their cooking classes started. Definitely will be going out of my way to come back here. read more

From the Press Restaurant group in Napa, they have brought forth this amazing new bakery called Under-Study. This has taken over the former Dean & Delucca gourmet supermarket that used to be back in the day (RIP...those were good times!) This is a beautifully done location and the food is wonderful too. The pastries are just gorgeous to look at. We ordered the Pan Au Chocolate, chocolate chip cookie, and Blueberry Danish. ALL were amazing. The chocolate croissant was very flaky and buttery, and had such a fun shape to it, shaped long and skinny like a hot dog! So cute! The chocolate chip cookie was nice and soft, and had great quality chocolate. The blueberry danish had a really nice cream filling - nice and rich, pulling you into one more bite. All pastries were so delicious!!! This place is brand new, so service seemed a little off, but really not that bad. They just seemed a little out of place. They will get there, I'm sure. This is a wonderful place to stop by and get pastries in between wine tastings and for gifts for your friends on the way home. Napa Valley needed a new bakery, and I'm so glad they're here!! read more
First visit to Understudy did not disappoint. We dined in the covered patio behind Press and it was a fresh, cool, pleasant environment. The service is friendly and the food was delicious. My breakfast sandwich was among the best I have had. Looking forward to the next visit. read more
