House cocktail from the archive

I try to visit Goose & Gander whenever I'm in St. Helena. Their burger is incredible, the cocktails are expertly crafted, and the bone marrow appetizer is rich and memorable. The steaks are cooked perfectly and worth the trip on their own. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with beautiful seating areas both indoors and outside. Never had a negative experience with service. Always a fantastic experience.

What an amazing spot--so worth the wait! The food was outstanding, even though we were already full from lunch... we still couldn't resist sharing a few plates, and every bite was worth it. Walking in feels like stepping into someone's home--cozy, welcoming, and spotless. The service was fantastic, and the overall vibe made us want to linger. Here's a fun little secret: there's a speakeasy downstairs! And the story behind The Martini House makes it even more special. Built in 1923 by Walter Martini for him and his wife Dionisia, the charm of that Craftsman bungalow still shines through. Some even say Walter still makes his presence known in the building! All in all, a memorable experience from start to finish. We'll definitely be back!

Some of the best food I've had in all of St. Helena! We came on a holiday weekend for the Fourth of July and had a lovely time here. The staff were super friendly and attentive. We sat outside and were sat by a beautiful fountain that made our dinner relaxing. Everything from the drinks to our actual dinner were delicious. I highly recommend anything with their delicious shrimp or adding it to your main entree!

Sticky Pig Ears and Charles Krug Sauvignon Blanc

My girlfriend and I had a date night out here on 11/26/2024. It was our second time. The first time, we did takeout; this time, we decided to dine in because we liked the kind of ambiance. It doesn't feel uptight but is mellow and warm. We ordered a couple of appetizers (pig ears & corn croquettes) and shared a couple of entrees (lamb pappardelle and the G&G burger). We both enjoyed all of our food. My favorite was the pig ears. They have an extremely long wine list with wine from all of the world. I ordered a local Sauvignon Blanc by the glass (from Charles Krug Winery). I liked it and thought it was priced right/reasonably. The service was friendly and professional. We mentioned we would share the entrees, and they cut the burger in half for us (without being asked) A turn off, I have to say, was that our waiter spoke too loud almost to the extend that it killed the atmosphere. That I would like to see changed, but we enjoyed everything else.

Oh my gosh! What can I say about this place? 1st parking isn't readily available, I don't think as this time we went during night time; however, circling around to find parking, I could smell the yummy goodness. Hubby ended up dropping me and my son off since I was wearing heals and it was off/on raining. We walking in and the, I think manager or owner was help an elderly Cpl. showing where they could park and the easiest way to get inside. That was nice seeing that. After that, my son and I were greeted by the hostess who wish me a happiest of birthdays. After she seated us, my husband was there. Hugo greeted me a happy birthday as well and gave us birthday menus. We took some time to decide on cocktails and appetizers. Our server was very patient and courteous. While he put in for our drinks and wings, we were deciding what to get while taking in the ambiance. Out came our drinks and wings, then we ordered a Cpl of burgers and a steak for the birthday girl. Wings were finger licking fire. Hubby loved his clear ice cube in his old fashioned and my cucumber Collin's was awesome too. My son ordered his burger with a duck egg. He ate half up as he wanted to save room for dessert. My husband ate all his burger up. My steak was cooked to perfection but I was only able to eat half, as I too wanted to save room for dessert. For dessert we had chocolate mousse cake and apple galette then asked what dessert wine would go with the apple and Hugo recommended GL dolce which was so on point and totally enhanced the apple. As we were about to leave, the manager came over to check on us as well as wish me a happy birthday. Overall, just a fabulous birthday experience and I know we should come back more often than every 6 years but in my defense, we been out of the area for 5 of those years. Great Job to Goose and Gander.

Wow! Full belly! Lots of good wines to choose from and the portions for main dishes were pretty large. Definitely going back for the good food and excellent customer service.

I had heard that Goose & Gander was where the locals hang out which is exactly why my husband and I visited. We stopped in for an evening drink and sat off the back entrance. We loved the intimate seating, fully stocked bar, and staff hospitality. After seeing the menu, I chose to order the Fig & Fire and my husband the Rosemary-Pear Rhubarb. When I say my mezcal drink blew me away, it doesn't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed it. As a big fan of mezcal cocktails, it's hard to try something new and still feel astonished; this did just that. I also loved the duck fat fries and my husband enjoyed his gin drink. I could not recommend visiting Goose & Gander more for a great cocktail and elevated bar food bite!

We got the opportunity to meet up with one of my closest friends from Jax, Jay, during our trip and decided to grab some grub together at Goose & Gander, a Napa staple. We loved the warm cozy vibes, and sat downstairs in their basement bar. We ordered plenty of snacks, our favorites being the Stick Pig Ears & surprisingly, the Fried Olives (I'm not a huge olive fan but loved them). Such a great spot in Napa!

I've been here pre pandemic and one thing that stayed with me were their delicious duck fat fries. So at last my intentionally make my way back to Saint Helena for my duck fat fries. The service was great, we came in on a Friday evening with no ressies and were seated promptly. I was extremely underwhelmed by the food. I had a burger, asked for medium, it came out rare. I ordered a simple Cadillac margarita. The first time it came out and it taste like nothing but lime juice, the second time it was really strange. So needless to say I left with no margarita a rare burger, and the duck fat fries weren't as good as they were or at least the way I previously remembered them. Overall, we sat downstairs. It was a cool dinner. There were some hiccups, by the time we left there was an odor coming from the bathroom, it seemed like a plumbing situation was going on. Is it worth going to if you're local? Yes. Will I make the track from Fairfield back to Saint Helena just to come to Goose and Gander? No.

From the exterior, the unassuming historic craftsman style home looks simply as that. A private home with a magnificent garden in lovely St. Helena. However, step closer and you will find it has transcended into an opulent dining experience. The outdoor aesthetic begins in walking up to the front door, blanketed by the lovely garden, and scent of floral jasmine as you ascend the front steps. Stepping inside it is as if you have gone back in time with beautiful early 19th century architectural design and decor. Rich mahogany, fine leather, shiny brass. We stopped in only for a cocktail, so we made our descent to the bar below. This beautiful space boasts a speakeasy feeling with bar and hightop seating, as well as a corner booth. The bar has a plentiful list of libations, along with an impressive cocktail, spirit, and wine program. You will find a full restaurant on the main floor, as well as an outdoor patio. Gorgeous interiors throughout. Those that stay cool in warmer months, but toasty with a fireplace in the cooler ones. Perfect for date night, dinner with friends, special occasions, or any occasion for that matter. Definitely a place for the grown and sexy.

Every single thing went well at Goose & Gander. Make reservations ahead as they were very busy when we walked in. The service, staff, food, & ambiance all 5 stars! Such a treat for us coming from Hawaii and a must if you're visiting wine country

This cocktail is VERY acidic. Mostly lemonade? Could only drink half.
Rose R.

Not sure what the hype is all about. The best thing we had were the pig ears. The mushroom soup was tasty. The cocktails were terrible. Sent 2 back and chose a different option. We left a lot of alcohol on the table. The burger was soggy and flavorless. Not sure why anyone would order the bone marrow with it. We also had the risotto and added chicken. Chicken added $15. Paying nearly $50 for risotto that was just okay? We will NOT be back. The wait staff was nice but didn't offset the poor meal.

Fortaleza Blanco, double ($28)

3.5 STARS When picking a resto, I look for two things: dog-friendly outdoor patio and something on the menu that jumps out at me. I saw that Goose & Gander has a dog-friendly patio AND serves pig ears... Sold. If an American resto has the balls to put pig ears (or any offal) on the menu, I'm going. G&G is open for takeout, indoor dining, and outdoor dining. No delivery. Rezzies on Opentable are recommended on the weekends. M E N U Classic and New American Fare (the online menu is not up-to-date). Full bar with extensive liquor list. 4% employee benefits charge added to all bills. D R I N K S * Fortaleza Blanco, single (menu-$14, charged-$17) * Fortaleza Blanco, double ($28): https://tinyurl.com/bdh27wy5 When we received the bill, I noticed I was charged $17 for a shot/single of FB. Per our server, they charge $3 for an ice cube. Out of all the bars and restos I've been to, this was the first time I've been charged for an ice cube. Unless the ice cube is made of unicorn tears, why not just build the cost into the price of the drink? F O O D * Beef Chicharrón ($9): https://tinyurl.com/mwxrpkvs Arrived still crackling...the chicharrón was warm, crunchy, and airy. Could have used some seasoning but it was otherwise, a good drunchie. * Sticky Pig Ears ($11): https://tinyurl.com/mwxrpkvs Best thing we had at G&G - deliciously crisp, chewy, and gelatinous coated in sticky savory sweet sauce with a kick. Not as bomb as the pig ears at PRESS but at a fraction of the cost, it's worth a try if you're feeling adventurous. * Heirloom Tomatoes & Burrata w/ lemon cucumbers, shallots, balsamic, focaccia ($15): https://tinyurl.com/23uyf89a Underwhelming - the tomatoes were overripen and on the mushy side, and there just wasn't enough burrata to enjoy. * G&G Burger w/ grass-fed beef, gruyère, bacon, remoulade, manhattan pickle, lettuce (Off the menu - $24): https://tinyurl.com/bvxru6bx ++ Bone Marrow ($6) ++ Split Fee for sharing ($5) which includes your own side of duck fries --Requested medium rare The beef patty was on point; perfectly medium rare and juicy with a smoky char flavor. The ciabatta (?) bun was too chewy so you couldn't get a clean bite without the patty and fixings sliding around and slipping out. The duck fries tasted like regular shoestring fries, lacking the extra richness that duck fat usually adds. SO, that's where the bone marrow comes in....we used it for dipping the fries. * Mashed Potatoes ($10) Not my order but tried a bite...incredibly creamy, smooth, and buttery. S E R V I C E Welcoming hostess with positive vibes. Our server seemed friendly but his interactions with us was rushed compared to other customers. He explained the menu to other tables but not to us. I overheard him hyping up the mushroom soup, which they kept on the menu from predecessor Martini House (Michelin star). Had we known, we would have ordered it. Before I could ask a question (about the dessert menu), he was already across the patio. Prompt food service for an early 5 pm dinner. A M B I A N C E The highlight of dinner was the awesome patio vibes - charming, quaint, and lined with fairy lights, foliage, and trees. Even in 80 degree weather, most of the seating was naturally shaded so it was comfortable. P A R K I N G Street parking only which was easy to find. Overall, while the food was just ok, the patio vibes is where it's at. Come for a drink and apps...AND enjoy! BYOI (bring your own ice) tho. J/k.

Is there happy hour, if so when and does it include food? Also, is there a corkage fee?

All the Napa restaurants have corkage fees. There is no happy hour that we know of. Check the restaurant website.

What's the corkage fee?

Outside wines are always welcome. Corkage is $30 per 750ml for the first 2 bottles, $50 per 750ml for each additional bottle.… Read more

There's no mention of a happy hour on the G&G web site, does anyone know what its like and the hours/days? Thanks

While working in St. Helena, I could never find an opening in a reservation, so here was a great opportunity now that all of us are retired. Our friends live in Clear Lake while we live in Vallejo, so this is a central place to meet. It was the best decision I made because every year for the past several anniversaries, we've gone to Cache Creek to C2. Their food and service is excellent because my husband enjoys poker, but I thought a change of scenery would be nice. And it was! Firstly, it was very kind of the staff to present us with a greeting card signed by everyone -- how sweet and thoughtful! We will cherish that! Secondly, we were very impressed with how the food/wine was locally sourced. It was incredible to hear the story about Custom, the Bull, and taste the difference between the Highland beef compared to Angus. Our waitress was "Erica S." She was engaging, personable, and very informative. My husband and I would definitely like to return to return to experience the dinner menu! We and our guests had the following dishes: Artichoke appetizer Arbororio Biscuits & Gravy Two Cheeseburgers Three Bloody Mary's Farmstead Margarita When they found out it was our anniversary celebration, the house sent over four glasses of complimentary champagne and a dish of dessert -- again, very sweet and kind of them I now understand why so many crowds flock to this restaurant! It's well worth the wait! If you have not experienced a meal there, you must definitely go now!

From the beginning, there seemed to be constant miscommunication between staff. We specifically booked an outdoor reservation and were seated inside instead. While mistakes happen, it set the tone for the rest of the evening. The bigger issue involved the wine and corkage fee. We purchased a bottle directly from the market associated with the restaurant and were told by the employee there that the corkage fee would be waived if we bought their wine. When we sat down, our server Sara told us that was not true and that we would still have to pay the fee. I explained what we had been told, and when she asked if I wanted a manager involved, I said yes. Before the manager even arrived or clarified the situation, the server opened our bottle of wine. In the silence and confusion, I reasonably assumed the fee issue had been resolved. Then the manager came over and told us we would still be charged and implied that nobody at the market would have told us otherwise. The way it was handled made my husband and I feel like we were being accused of making the whole thing up, which was especially upsetting on Mother's Day. At that point, the bottle was already opened, so we were essentially stuck paying the fee regardless. Between being seated incorrectly, the poor communication between employees, and how dismissive the situation felt, the service completely overshadowed what should have been a special meal. The rest of the service we felt ignored and there was minimal effort to accommodate. Great food alone is not enough to justify returning when the hospitality experience feels this frustrating and unprofessional.

Outdoor space looks amazing & is pup-friendly. Cons: If you're hungry, eat before you go. Bring snacks for in-between courses. You might have to stop off to grab food on the way home. Thankful they kept bringing the yummy bread! Lacked course timing, underseasoned, pricey. $550 later, yet we left underwhelmed & unfulfilled. Our meal took over 3.5 hours... (details below)... there's a fine line between building anticipation/ "hunger sauce" & causing anxiety/ frustration. **Napa Restaurant Month** If you wanted a steak (ie. the "NY strip" offered as part of their limited-time prix fixe menu), this is probably not what you're looking for. Gray, gray, gray... no matter your temp preference, medium? Gray... Medium rare? Gray... Rare? Gray. Perhaps the sous vide method with added grill marks, but they should tell customers that since most folks are expecting a steak-like steak. Oh, and it's actually just 3 slices OF A steak (questionable if truly NY cut), barely room temperature, but tasted okay (needed a dash of seasoning). Our meal took 3.5 hours... mostly because the kitchen "timed" the courses 30+ minutes apart. Maybe they were going for dramatic effect, but there's a fine line between "hunger sauce" & frustration. None of the courses were so complicated to justify the wait AND the place was nearly empty. Our wine pairings were poured 10-15 minutes before each course, so we sat there trying not to drink the wine because we wanted to taste it WITH our food. We had a nice time with friends, but the timing was a bit strange. The food: Course 1 - Hamachi was really good! 3 slices with jalapeño crema, radish, cilantro, lime vinaigrette. Course 2 - Chicken tortilla soup. 4 spoonfuls of luke warm tomato soup poured over a few cubed morsels. This had the flavor of spaghettiOs. When I said it out loud to our table, everyone laughed & agreed... it was the taste they were all trying to peg. Course 3 - NY strip. 3 slices of almost-warm, gray meat with 3 potato slices, 2 carrot halves, sautéed Swiss chard, chimichurri. Veggies were tasty. Course 4 - (they ran out) so we got something from their regular menu. The sesame citrus gâteau was not my favorite. The cheesecake was so bitter, I took 2 bites & could not eat anymore. We also ordered for the table: -- Elotes (not very good, still on the cob,not worth the effort); -- Brussels sprouts (fresh, but undercooked & underseasoned); -- Mushrooms (naturally flavorful, but unseasoned); -- Their complimentary bread plate & olive oil was Yum!!

The place had a steady flow of locals and road-trippers, which is always a good sign when you're pulling off the highway. It was quick, easy, and exactly what we needed in the moment. Will I be back? Probably not, but this might be perfect for you.

OMG! Off the charts wonderful…read more Did the four course lunch with the wine pairings. What a special experience. Don't miss this. Attentive service, great food, thoughtful wine pairings, outstanding price/value. One of the most enjoyable dinning experiences I have enjoyed.

I treated my parents to a 4 course lunch meal with wine pairings for their anniversary and we had a…read morewonderful time. The service was amazing. The students worked very hard and the food all looked so pretty. For the price and value of the prix fixe, I would rank this place 5 stars. But not considering price, I would give it 4 stars, because the food is not quite matching the level of the fine dining in the Napa area... yet. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. I love the attention to detail. They gave us free champagne for the celebration, and put celebratory words on their desserts. We were so full at the end of our meal, I probably will go with 3 courses instead of 4 next time to not stuff myself silly. After our meal, we walked around the garden area next to the parking lots, and then visited the other building where the student bakery was. I bought some pastries to take home to my husband and kids. We tried few different tarts and they were all delicious! I highly recommend checking out the student bakery if they are open. One credit card tip that you may find useful: this place did not count as a restaurant so I didn't get my bonus Chase cashback (5% category that month instead of regular 1%). I was a little disappointed there because I like maximizing my cashback. I would use my other credit card for 3% cashback next time! It showed up as "charitable and social service organizations" on my CC transactions. I will definitely go back! It's such a good deal for a nice meal.
