This was my 2nd trip to Rutherford Grill; though, I've been to other Hillstone restaurants many times. The ambiance is like other Hillstone restaurants (Houston's, in particular). Dimmer lighting. Mostly booth seating. Organized and professional service. I haven't had any issues booking dinner here. The restaurant is a pretty good size, and there's ample parking. - cheeseburger: I've always been a big fan of the cheeseburger. This time it tasted a bit different though. The sauce in it was tangier than I'm used to. It was still good though. Served with fries, and the fries are nice & crispy. - knife and fork barbecue ribs: these are my favorite ribs, and I love that they're truly "knife and fork" ribs. No need to get your hands all messy eating these things. I'm always torn between ordering this and the cheeseburger. I love them so. The coleslaw and fries that are served with the ribs are a nice complement. - ruby red trout in a lemon butter sauce with crispy rock shrimp: these rock shrimp steal the show here. They're amazing. They have this delightful seasoned salt and are perfectly crispy. The trout itself is fine, but not great. It has a salmon-y flavor to it. - potatoes colcannon: these are delicious. Basically cheesy mashed potatoes with some veggies mixed in. So good. And you can actually substitute your side(s) on the other dishes with this. read more

Stopped by here for the first time after a quick trip to Calistoga, and I'm glad we did! It wasn't overly busy, so we were seated right away. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. They offer a great selection of wines, along with a cocktail menu if you're looking for something different. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and it's the kind of place that's perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring wine country. We dined here on Friday while my family was visiting from Los Angeles, and we wanted to introduce them to Rutherford Grill. This was our third visit and their first, and it certainly did not disappoint. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrées, and every dish was outstanding. Our server, Ty, was friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome throughout the evening. My relatives travel all over the country and consider themselves food enthusiasts, and they were thoroughly impressed with both the quality of the food and the overall dining experience. Rutherford Grill continues to be one of our favorite places to eat whenever we're in Napa Valley, and now it's one of theirs too. We'll definitely be back. read more

Ok Rutherford was similar to all the sister restaurants of Hillstone. Reminded me of Houston's, but the food in my opinion was 3/5. I felt the food was prepared the way we wanted. We had to take our food back a few times but they were accommodating. I ordered the salmon with the potatoes and broccolini. Didn't care for the potatoes but I was able to get the creamed corn and that was quite tasty. For my drink I got a lemon drop and it was only 3/5 for me!! Felt like it wasn't mixed great! Rutherford Grill never ceases to amaze, satisfy and tantalize the tastebuds ! We spent the weekend in Napa for my birthday and had to make sure we booked a seat at RG. The savory, soft bread combined with the prime rib & dip is simply THE BEST! The BBQ plate is a great value, not only for price point, but taste and overall "get in my belly" flavors this abundant dish provides. Yes please, an extra side of we BBQ sauce for dipping I can't forget to mention the service here never disappoints! Good enough food. But not for the price. Ambiance was great. The service is so slow it took 2 hours to serve 3 entrees for LUNCH. I was so irritated I felt like not only was our money wasted, but it was a giant waste of time. Also... The cornbread. Guys, you used to serve an entire cast iron skillet with cornbread. Update prior review to say the food, service and ambiance all remain excellent and consistent a year after our last visit. What an amazing restaurant! This is a well known and historic restaurant in Napa that had been here for decades! Dishes here are just absolutely awesome! Atmosphere is fantastic! Service is attentive, friendly and fast! I highly recommend you make reservations because this restaurant is always busy with about a 20-30+ minutes wait time otherwise. They are well known for their french dip sandwich. It is such a unique and delicious trst that you will never forget! It is absolutely amazing! The beef was nice and medium rare as I ordered. It has been 10 years since I reviewed the Rutherford Grill. Tonight's visit has me questioning whether I should return in the future. My gripe might seem petty but my order of sausage and a chicken thigh was pathetic. The thigh looked like it was cut in half. Very little meat, rubbery skin, about 2 bites and it was gone. The beanie wienies they call sausages were not much better. It seemed like a complete ripoff for the price I paid. I have frequented Rutherford Grill many times over the past 20 years. My wife and I taken a drive through wine country and stopped here for lunch. They have plenty of parking and easy access to the entrance. The dining room has plenty of tables and so the bar. All the areas were clean and service was great. We ordered Deviled eggs, Cornbread bites and Charred Artichokes. For appetizers and for main entree, the French dip sandwich with Coleslaw. We enjoyed the appetizers but we really liked the Cornbread bites. It's light and not dense with a mild flavor of Jalapeños. The French dip has always been one of my favorites and never disappoints. We regularly go to Rutherford Grill. It is one of our favorite places in the Napa area. The honey butter cornbread bytes are one of our must haves unless trying to reduce carbs. They are served in a small cast iron heated skillet. Yum. The flying Tuna tartare appetizer is a favorite that we often have. Tonight we had roasted kale with bread. We thank Helena, our server for recommending it. The double cut pork chop, cooked over the wood grill, was excellently grilled. We really like the smokiness of wood fired cooking for special evenings. For dessert, a double espresso and ice cream covered with espresso chocolate sauce. Yum. Rutherford grill is always our go to when we did wine tasting. Food is always fantastic here, last time we went we had the bbq ribs, the meat fell right off the bone and so good. I ordered the pork chop, super lucked out because there were only a few left. That pork chop is massive like a double decker, but the meat inside was so tender and juicy. Cam, you were just incredible! I've written a few reviews here, and the food is just consistent every single time! But Cam was just an awesome server, and we enjoyed him so much! The service is just unbelievable! They are great about sharing plates here and still Kaump your first bottle of wine that you bring. I unfortunately found myself pretty disappointed with Rutherford Grill. It came highly recommended by some friends so we went when in the area, but it didn't really meet expectations for me. The staff was a bit rude to be honest--after making a reservation and checking back in after the time we were told, we still had to wait even longer. More disappointing though was the food. The portions were simply not worth the price--$30 for this relatively small sandwich! I understand it's Napa but still. The flavor wasn't anything special in my opinion to make up for it either. Same applies to the sides, we got fries and cornbread bites. Again, this did not meet expectations and I would very likely not return. read more

Phew. Boyfriend was craving and raving about the artichoke. Wasn't on the menu, but ASK- it was available and lived up to the hype. Sooo delicious. Smoky, perfectly seasoned and served with the remoulade that we asked more of for our fries that were coming. He had the French dip and that bun and meat with the dip melted in your mouth. I had the special- pork chop with potatoes and napa cabbage with feta-sold. Service was almost too efficient-took things we were not done with, but in so nice about it. Worse, if not, definitely top five worst customer service ever. I would say we were racially profiled and asked to leave after two hours even though I had a drink on the table that wasn't finished, , but after reading all the other horrible reviews that seemed to be pretty diverse I would just say they have pretty bad service food mediocre. I've definitely had way better food way better drinks, without a rude waiter who's coming by every five minutes asking us if we need boxes and eventually a manager, who puts a napkin on our table then comes back to pick it up and says we've been here for two hours you need to leave the table. Stopped for lunch in between Round Pound and Aonair, had reservations set up by our hotel concierge. Friday at 1:30 pm -- quite busy, but just a few people waiting for seats. We were quickly seated (hostess was busy though!) Waitress, Lina, was excellent. Service was excellent. We ordered the grilled artichokes (so good alone, we didn't even use the creamy white dipping sauce!) - not on the menu, seasonal item. The table next to us were excited when they heard the artichokes were available, sounds like a very popular appetizer! Came with 3 half pieces, fresh off the grill. I had the flying Tuna Platter salad, which was delicious! Tasty dressing and fresh ingredients, big chunks of mango and.avocado! Partner got the famous French Dip sandwich - excellent! The bread was toasty and soft! I had a bite with the horseradish sauce, so good and the perfect bite of heat! Would definitely come back. Would love to try dinner next time. Oh, we also got the harvest cheesecake which was made with kuri squash (had to ask her to repeat it bc I was thinking it was some kind of Thai curry cheesecake, lol). My dad took my husband and I here for a late lunch/ early dinner on the Monday before Christmas and the place was pretty packed for a weekday. We walked in on Friday, 7/17, around 2:30 p.m. with a party of seven. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were being racially profiled. We asked for a table, and the hostess immediately told us no because they could only seat parties of six. She said we could sit outside, but only if we ordered appetizers. There was a large empty round table inside that would have accommodated all seven of us. I understand that restaurants have policies, but it wasn't just the policy--it was the way we were treated. The hostess repeatedly said "no" in a very rude manner, avoided eye contact, didn't acknowledge us respectfully, and walked away before the conversation was even over. The interaction made us feel unwelcome. Because of the experience, we decided to leave and went to Mustards instead, where we received friendly, welcoming service. Went to the Rutherford Grill before heading out to wine tasting. I made reservations for the 4 of us. We arrived about 10 mins before 11 when they open. There was already a gentleman waiting. Several more parties showed up before they opened the doors prompt at 11 am. When we sat down I let the server know that we had a noon wine tasting arranged. She was very accommodating. She said she would put our orders in right away. She left to get our drinks and by the time she was back we knew what we wanted to order. For the table we order 2 of the cornbread bits. I have to say they are excellent but I miss getting the skillet of cornbread they use to serve. I had the chicken salad which was delish. It is a bit reminiscent of a Chinese chicken salad with the peanut favor. I love it and always order it. My DH order the vegetarian enchiladas which comes with an egg and salad. He very much enjoyed the dish. My daughter had the French dip which she raved about. It came with both au jus and a horseradish sauce. She LOVED the horseradish sauce. She said it was nice and spicy!! Her husband had the Caesar salad with prawns. He loved the salad and dressing. He wasn't as happy with the prawns. They were breaded and deep fried. He said they were ok but kind of bland. He said he should have asked if he could have had some of the delish chicken that I had in my salad. But now we know to ask. The server was able to deliver our food and get us out the door so we were in time for our wine tasting. It was a fantastic meal with fantastic service. If your experiment needs statistics, you ought to have done a better experiment -- Ernest Rutherford I gave Hillstone another chance during a recent Napa trip but this restaurant is as lackluster now as the others. What a degradation in quality with this formerly stellar chain. My Hillstone experiment is over. French Dip sandwich was lackluster and tired, barely any meat. We had to send the other entree back as the southwest hamburger description did not match what was received. After a day of wine tasting, ordered a Diet Coke and refills are not free. Service was okay but nothing special. Interior is the same as other Hillstone restaurants. There are better options in Wine Country. Go elsewhere. Not recommended. read more

Great service, good food, dark wood, comfortable booths, no corkage, nice and cool on a hot day in the summer, everyone in a good mood.....it's the perfect Napa hangout spot. I love the Hillstone Restaurant Group, so when I came to visit Napa I knew that I had to come here. I ordered the kale & rotisserie chicken salad, and it did not disappoint. It was super light, refreshing, but also very filling. The peanut dressing is delicious. Also enjoyed the fries--perfectly thin and crispy. Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time because it can get extremely packed. They have a bar next to the waiting area which is really thoughtful of the restaurant. Leaves are the best Salmon, chicken, beef with jus, kale salad and coleslaw were some of the dishes Salads are super fresh and crisp. The food at Rutherford bar and grill is good! Myself and two friends have spent a lot of $$'s there through the years. However, a very humiliating experience happened to me at a restaurant (not Rutherford Grill) that had me vomiting ( thank God on the floor) a truly embarrassing situation! So, it had been recommended by my health practitioner to have pro biotic drinks, rather then a soft drinks. My friend and I went to Rutherford bar and grill once a week. On this particular evening, we were seated, I asked for a glass of ice for my pro biotic drink which I took out of my purse (I bought it at Wholefoods minutes prior to going to restaurant ) She immediately said you can not bring your own beverage inside. I showed her my un-opened bottle,"it's lemon ginger for my stomach disorder its not alcoholic". I respectively pointed to the bottle. She kindly departed and said that she would get back to me on whether or not I could drink it, after speaking with her supervisor. Meanwhile roughly 10 or fifteen minutes had passed and the gal never got back to myself and my friend seated at the table. Fifteen minutes later, a tall attractive women (possibly 40 to 45 years of age) with a white chef top and black pants came to our table. She had long black straight hair and fiery red lipstick. She came to our table, and asked, if there was anything we needed. I was surprised and asked, "are you a chef? this is unusual your coming to our table". She ignored my question, and asked again, "was there anything we needed?' I explained that my friend had ordered her drink already and that I had asked for a glass of ice. "by this time close to twenty minutes had passed since the gal said she'd ask her supervisor) So, my thought was "oh I guess I can drink my pro biotic". So, my friend got her alcoholic beverage and a glass of ice was brought to me. I poured my drink into my ice filled glass and took one sip...when miss tall attractive women with the chef uniform approaches me..sadly her expression was jealousy and happiness as she spoke to me as though she was "getting off", on telling a genuinely kind and tall blonde woman, "give me your drink" my friend and I were shocked! I explained its a pro biotic for my stomach challenges, its not alcohol." She smiled a fake smile and said "hand it to me, beverages are not allowed to be brought into our restaurant!" tears pricked at my eyes out of shock and embarrassment, because fellow patrons were looking at me like I had done something wrong. I said..."well then can I go outside and drink it? this was an expensive drink for my stomach, I just bought it had Wholefoods a few minutes ago." She sternly said, "No. Consider this a warning or never come back again!", as she reached over me and took my bottle and my glass away! My experience was beyond humiliating. Needless to say we did not eat dinner their and my friend did not drink her margarita. I am a Spiritual life Coach. I value and love, treating people with compassion and respect. Jealousy is ugly, no matter how attractive a women may be! Needless to say my friends and myself after several years of eating there: have never returned. This situation happened 4 months ago. I've been to Rutherford Grill 2-3 times over the past decade or so. It's right on Highway 29. So it's probably very popular since it's not off the beaten path. Each and every time I've been parking has been difficult. It has a small lot, but beware of spots specifically labeled for the post office or for Beaulieu Vineyards. The restaurant is much bigger than the parking situation would led you to believe. There's even patio outdoor seating. The ambiance is beautiful. It's casual for Napa. But there's still a dress code (like no sports jerseys or flip flops). I'm not sure how strictly they enforce it. Highly recommend making a reservations which can easily be done online. Walk-ins are acceptable but you will likely be waiting a while. The food is very tasty. Think American food like burgers and sandwiches and salads but elevated. It is a bit pricy, but that's to be expected of Napa. After tax and tip you'll likely have spent $45 per person. My most recent visit I got the ahi tuna salad per the recommendation of a friend. It was bright and somehow filling enough for lunch. It was $36. Next time I'd rather go for the famous artichokes or the French dip. Service was top notch! I cannot say anything negative about it at all. It's a nice restaurant. It's not quite fine dining but a lot more polished than your local Italian restaurant. Going home can be a bit tricky turning left on 29. You may want to just turn right with the flow of traffic and drive through Silverado Trail. It's a very nice restaurant but I would only come here if I was in the area and someone else chose it. The unfavorable parking situation is the main thing that sticks in my mind... It would be a lovely dinner to end a day of wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma. read more
