Disappointing in so many ways- one of the oddest experiences... I ordered a Caesar salad and a large wedge of lettuce arrived at the table, which was unexpected for a Caesar salad and I asked if I could please get it chopped and both a chef and a manager appeared at the table and said " we don't do that." I tried to understand if they were literally saying that they don't cut salads... And I asked don't they have a large knife in the back that would cut a salad for me and they said they don't do that. The most ridiculous thing I've ever heard that they don't want to make their customers happy and simply take a salad to the back and chop it for them Not only that, but the attitude of both the Chef and the manager were as if they were too good to cut some lettuce and there was no apology or anything to try and make us happy... I simply returned the salad and did not eat it... The menu here is very odd as well a weird assortment of stuff and not a lot to choose from... The atmosphere is mediocre at best... Be careful if you're choosing to go here because it took a long time to drive here and almost $60 in an Uber and it was not worth the drive. My recommendation to them... Buy a nice sharp knife so you can cut salad for people read more

Really disappointed with our experience. We drove an extra 20 minutes deeper into Napa specifically to come here because the restaurant sounded amazing and we were really looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were told that my stepdad couldn't be served because he was wearing a tank top and needed to have a shirt with sleeves. We completely understand having a dress code, but it would have been nice to know this beforehand, especially after making the extra drive. It was also around 70° outside, so a tank top didn't seem unreasonable for the weather. Because of the dress code, we ended up having to leave without ever getting to experience the food, drinks, or service. That's honestly the most disappointing part because the place sounded like somewhere we would have really enjoyed. I would strongly recommend making the dress code much more visible to guests before they make the drive. We left feeling like the entire trip was a waste, and unfortunately, we won't be coming back. read more

Love this place. I didn't realize it was owned by the same company who owns Los Altos Grill which I love. Great atmosphere. We sat at the bar. It was busy but we were lucky to get 2 seats right away. There were two women bartenders that no only served the drinks and food for the bar but for the restaurant as well and they did a great job. They were very friendly & worked their butts off covering all of it. We got the roasted artichoke which had that yummy Smokey grilled flavor. Cesar salad with crispy shrimp & French dip. Everything was amazing but, the French dip was to die for. We also got key lime pie. Very fresh and tasty. This meal was a 10/10. Service was salsa a 10/10. Stopped by here for the first time after a quick trip to Calistoga, and I'm glad we did! It wasn't overly busy, so we were seated right away. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. They offer a great selection of wines, along with a cocktail menu if you're looking for something different. I can see why this place is a classic - it reminds me of the great american restaurants that are so popular in the VA area. We made a reservation for a Thursday and glad we did, as it seemed quite busy. Dark with a sexy vibe and a bar in the center, service was a little slow but it did pick up. Foodwise we got the corn bread bites and the smoked salmon. The corn bread bites were absolutely stellar and the smoked salmon was good but not my favorite I've had. For our main we got the grilled chicken salad - nice flavors but personally prefer a hot chicken instead of a cold. We had to take our food back a few times but they were accommodating. I ordered the salmon with the potatoes and broccolini. Didn't care for the potatoes but I was able to get the creamed corn and that was quite tasty. For my drink I got a lemon drop and it was only 3/5 for me!! Felt like it wasn't mixed great! I haven't been here in a few years, but recently went wine tasting and decided Rutherford is a must visit! Waited 5 minutes for a table then ordered a glass of Azur rosé while browsing the delicious menu. I decided on the veggie burger! It was topped with a sweet soy glaze, lettuce, tomato, and melted Monterey Jack cheese & came with a side of fries. I was SO impressed by the presentation! Plus it was perfect after wine tasting (not heavy or greasy, and bursting with flavor). For desert I ordered the berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries) with sweet, fluffy cream and a mint garnish. 10s all around! The vibe, customer service, & food were all amazing. This was my 2nd trip to Rutherford Grill; though, I've been to other Hillstone restaurants many times. The ambiance is like other Hillstone restaurants (Houston's, in particular). Dimmer lighting. Mostly booth seating. Organized and professional service. I haven't had any issues booking dinner here. The restaurant is a pretty good size, and there's ample parking. - cheeseburger: I've always been a big fan of the cheeseburger. This time it tasted a bit different though. The sauce in it was tangier than I'm used to. It was still good though. Served with fries, and the fries are nice & crispy. - knife and fork barbecue ribs: these are my favorite ribs, and I love that they're truly "knife and fork" ribs. No need to get your hands all messy eating these things. I'm always torn between ordering this and the cheeseburger. I love them so. The coleslaw and fries that are served with the ribs are a nice complement. - ruby red trout in a lemon butter sauce with crispy rock shrimp: these rock shrimp steal the show here. They're amazing. They have this delightful seasoned salt and are perfectly crispy. The trout itself is fine, but not great. It has a salmon-y flavor to it. - potatoes colcannon: these are delicious. Basically cheesy mashed potatoes with some veggies mixed in. So good. And you can actually substitute your side(s) on the other dishes with this. read more

Hadn't been to this place in a long time, but it's still amazing! The food is excellent, location is perfect (plenty of wineries) and staff is welcoming. Dog friendly outside. Our only complaint would be to up the menu selection for people sitting outside. Very limited, no steaks or sandwiches, just apps and drinks. Some people prefer to sit outside and enjoy the day, offering up a better menu like most other places in the area do, would be great. We come there for the steaks, not the appetizers (even though they're delicious too). read more

We regularly go to Rutherford Grill. It is one of our favorite places in the Napa area. The honey butter cornbread bytes are one of our must haves unless trying to reduce carbs. They are served in a small cast iron heated skillet. Yum. The flying Tuna tartare appetizer is a favorite that we often have. Tonight we had roasted kale with bread. We thank Helena, our server for recommending it. The double cut pork chop, cooked over the wood grill, was excellently grilled. We really like the smokiness of wood fired cooking for special evenings. For dessert, a double espresso and ice cream covered with espresso chocolate sauce. Yum. The restaurant is nicely set around the bar and the kitchen area. This makes for a nice elegant meal in a romantic setting. We highly recommend Rutherford Grill. read more

It has been 10 years since I reviewed the Rutherford Grill. Tonight's visit has me questioning whether I should return in the future. My gripe might seem petty but my order of sausage and a chicken thigh was pathetic. The thigh looked like it was cut in half. Very little meat, rubbery skin, about 2 bites and it was gone. The beanie wienies they call sausages were not much better. It seemed like a complete ripoff for the price I paid. I have frequented Rutherford Grill many times over the past 20 years. My wife and I taken a drive through wine country and stopped here for lunch. They have plenty of parking and easy access to the entrance. The dining room has plenty of tables and so the bar. I unfortunately found myself pretty disappointed with Rutherford Grill. It came highly recommended by some friends so we went when in the area, but it didn't really meet expectations for me. The staff was a bit rude to be honest--after making a reservation and checking back in after the time we were told, we still had to wait even longer. More disappointing though was the food. The portions were simply not worth the price--$30 for this relatively small sandwich! I understand it's Napa but still. The flavor wasn't anything special in my opinion to make up for it either. Same applies to the sides, we got fries and cornbread bites. Again, this did not meet expectations and I would very likely not return. read more

Stopped for lunch in between Round Pound and Aonair, had reservations set up by our hotel concierge. Friday at 1:30 pm -- quite busy, but just a few people waiting for seats. We were quickly seated (hostess was busy though!) Waitress, Lina, was excellent. Service was excellent. We ordered the grilled artichokes (so good alone, we didn't even use the creamy white dipping sauce!) - not on the menu, seasonal item. The table next to us were excited when they heard the artichokes were available, sounds like a very popular appetizer! Came with 3 half pieces, fresh off the grill. I had the flying Tuna Platter salad, which was delicious! Tasty dressing and fresh ingredients, big chunks of mango and.avocado! Partner got the famous French Dip sandwich - excellent! The bread was toasty and soft! I had a bite with the horseradish sauce, so good and the perfect bite of heat! Would definitely come back. Would love to try dinner next time. Oh, we also got the harvest cheesecake which was made with kuri squash (had to ask her to repeat it bc I was thinking it was some kind of Thai curry cheesecake, lol). But I learned a red kuri squash is a winter squash, looks like a small pumpkin. Cheesecake was awesome, kissed just so lightly with a mild, sweet and nutty squash flavor. read more

It's comforting to know this place is still on 29! My first time here was over 20 years ago and the quality of food, and service is still one of the best. My dad took my husband and I here for a late lunch/ early dinner on the Monday before Christmas and the place was pretty packed for a weekday.
