I was really looking forward to coming here but it was a bit underwhelming. The pork chop was very fatty. The scallops were ok. The bread which they listed for $12 rang up at $14 for a slice of bread cut into 4 pieces. Would not recommend getting the bread. For years, Compline's burger has been on numerous "Best" of lists so decided to finally give them a try during a staycation. The sweet tang of the onions cut through the richness. To nitpick, the patty wasn't juicy and I prefer a harder sear. Also, while the model bakery bun was soft, it wasn't toasted enough and lacked structural integrity (bottoms were soggy). Can't have a burger without fries! The duck fries were deliciously crunchy with a soft interior and extra richness from the duck fat. When we heard that this place was started by a Master Somm from Nebraska, we knew we needed to go! We were a little early for a reservation, but we're seated quickly when we got there. Their patio is on the smaller side, but they had the perfect amount of tables where you felt spread out enough from everyone else. Everyone who helped us was really knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. They're by the glass menu was really unique and offered some variety, which is great, especially in Napa when you're used to only cabs and Chardonnays. We started with the deviled eggs and duck fat fries. The deviled eggs we're cooked perfectly and the little bacon jam on top of them added the perfect amount of fat and extra flavor. The duck fat fries were amazing and crispy, and the aioli they came with helps cut through the heaviness of the fries. I got the carbonara for dinner. The noodles seemed homemade in the best way and we're cooked to al dente perfection. The bacon in it was crispy and chewy and all the flavors melt it perfectly without feeling too heavy or indulgent. My husband got the steak and it was also cooked perfectly. We're always hesitant to get steak while we're out of Nebraska because we are spoiled with the quality in our hometown however this was very well executed-- cooked exactly to medium rare and so tender. I dined in a party of three at Compline on a Thursday night in June during a visit to Napa from the east coast. We had heard very good things. I would describe Compline as a wine forward, eclectic restaurant. The inside physical space is actually surprisingly small, and while perfectly nice, we decided to sit in the outside seating that faces a sort of outdoor urban shopping area. Our view was of a quiet, nicely lit streetscape. Our meals were excellent. Our host and server were charming, friendly and helpful as we perused the menu. I want to mention that my daughter has a fish allergy and the restaurant handled that very well. Ironically, we actually didn't have wine, but we had been out wine tasting earlier so we opted for cocktails: a classic martini, a "naked & famous", and a Compline Manhattan. All very good. For starters, which we shared, we chose the duck fat fries, the agnolotti pasta and the broccolini and burrata. All were very good, with the agnolotti being outstanding. Wow, I really enjoyed my first time here. Came for dinner on a Saturday. We made reservations but had a bit of a wait upon arrival. It was around 8p so the interior was dark and sexy but very lively. Almost like a lounge. The jalapeño margarita I had was legit spicy. The waitress was not joking when she warned us about the spice level. I had looked at a postcard in the nearby visitor center showing this on the Napa cheeseburger trail. I had a pretty good cheeseburger at the start of the trail so I was interested. We started with the cheese plate. Very tasty cheeses. Diverse too. Little light on the accoutrements but we're here for the cheese. Solid but touch over priced. My wife got the veggie plate. Lots of fun colorful veggies with the sweet potato condiment. The veggies were raw which rendered some more pleasant than others to eat. Ok the cheeseburger. I paid a little extra for the bacon. I'm glad I did. It had some good substance. Good bun that held up to the juicy patty. I liked the pickled veggies with it so I could tinker as I wanted. The weird thing was I don't remember the cheese at all. Meat was cooked correctly and very generous. Seasoning struggled to make it all the way through so it got kind of bland and heavy. Good but not near worth the price. The duck fat fries were ok. They reminded me of those crispy fries you get at a restaurant that can save any dish. Walked into compline on a Thursday night and were seated at a lovely window seat with a nice view. Loved the ambiance, lighting, and the bar as you walk into the restaurant. This was the worst meal and service that we experienced in Napa...We feel bad for our server as she wasn't trained enough. No clue on what vodkas they have; it took forever for our friend to get a drink. I also asked for a half order of a pasta for an appetizer; they said no....not even busy...really? I took the tuna tartare, Not #1 tuna that they advertise. Devil eggs tasted off, lamb meatballs dense. Here's the best 2 orders of the Bavette Steak, both medium rare....one rare the other is medium to well...really? And the pave potato has seen better days, old and oxidized. Every dish from appetizers to dessert were extremely tasty and done very well with some different twists which made it a standout if you want some different dishes from other places. I had a lovely experience back in June with my parents and partner at this spot. We made a last-minute reservation here after striking out with winery plans in the late afternoon--don't confuse the restaurant location with the wine bar location like we did! Both are within walking distance to each other. We got our wine fix tended to perfectly here. We asked about wines that would serve for all of our different preferences and with the food we ordered, and we got recommendations that we all loved from a staff member who knew his wines. I wish I remembered his name. It was my partner's first time in the Napa area and we were bummed to miss out on the wineries, but the staff member's expertise really came through for our late afternoon / early evening dinner and wine and we can't thank him enough for brightening our experience, as well as the servers who tended to us! Our food was delicious too, and we ordered the following from what I recall: California cheese board, daily bread (with butter), beef tartare, crudo (I don't recall which fish), ceviche, and almond cake. There are so many good and tasty restaurants in napa and this is not one of them. This might be a nice place to catch a drink but certainly not for dinner. Their price point didn't align with the quality and taste. First, their famous duck fat french fries. Nothing special because they literally tasted like regular fries. There was barely any hint of duck. Rockfish: There was no mention of chili oil used on their menu and that combination tasted really odd. Not only did it not complement the fish, it was overpowering and over shadowed the freshness of the fish. Fried chicken: it was juicy but bland. I'll admit that I write this review with a little hesitation. Not because there's anything wrong with Compline--in fact, quite the opposite. For the last few years, it has quietly been one of our favorite spots in Napa, and part of me doesn't want it to be too well-known or overrun. Living in the Bay Area, and especially with Napa so close, means constant access to great food and wine. There's no shortage of talent or creativity here, which makes it all the more remarkable when a place manages to stand out. Compline does--though not in the way you might expect. From the outside, Compline looks like a modern, approachable restaurant and wine bar. Inside, the interior is clean and welcoming, but there's nothing extravagant. The staff are dressed casually, and the atmosphere feels like the kind of place you'd happily drop into any for a nice dinner out. Everything about it signals a comfortable, neighborhood spot. And yet, what you actually get is far more: food and wine that rival the very dining experiences in the region. It almost goes out of its way to hide that fact, which makes the reveal all the more striking. The menu reads simple, but each dish delivers layers of nuance and precision--seasonal, balanced, and deeply satisfying. Even the staples impress: the fries are, without exaggeration, the best I've ever had (and I've sought out plenty). And when it comes to composed dishes, every plate is thoughtful, elegant, and perfectly tuned without ever feeling fussy. Wine, of course, is part of Compline's soul. With a master sommelier at the helm, the list is predictably stellar. But the real surprise is how deep that expertise runs: every staff member seems overqualified for their role, each one a wine expert in their own right. More importantly, they clearly have fun being there. That energy makes a huge difference. For years now, we've made a habit of going with (or rather forcing upon) the staff "dealer's choice" and letting them guide us through what excites them in the moment. Every one of those experiences has been amazing: interactive, thoughtful, and full of genuine enthusiasm on the other side. There's real intent behind every decision, and you can feel the joy they take in crafting something personal. In fact, I believe that dealer's choice has now made its way, in some form, onto the menu. And I hereby, perhaps undeservedly, claim responsibility for that- You're welcome. The selections rotate frequently, and each new menu has been a hit. The wines change constantly too, and I've never once had a pairing that didn't sing. There's a kind of freedom in handing the reins over and simply letting the staff share what excites them--it makes each visit feel unique. Best of all, Compline doesn't demand formality (but it can definitely handle it) You can come in comfortably dressed, settle in with friends but you can also come for a special date, and enjoy a meal that feels effortless yet is executed at the highest level. The experience is elevated but never pretentious--intimate, generous, and quietly exceptional. As a bonus, Compline also operates a wine shop down the road, which I'd argue is among the best in the country. Their wine club is one of the few we've joined and I cherish it. In a region filled with extraordinary restaurants, Compline stands apart precisely because it doesn't try to. Matt was especially helpful at refilling our water, wine and clearing our plates. We even accidentally dropped our fork and he promptly picked it up and offered us a new one! Love the First Street area where Compline is located. Was kind of shocked at how empty it was for a Friday night. I sat at the bar and ordered a glass of red wine which was $20, but it was pretty tasty. For my entree, I did the steak with Chimichurri which I thought was pretty good. The crispy potatoes that came with the dish were delicious and the Chimichurri sauce that was over the steak (cooked medium rare) was very light and good too. What I enjoyed most about this place was that the portions were somewhat small, but very filling. Many would probably think the entree portions are too small here, but I enjoyed it for what it was. I've been wanting to try Compline for a while, so I was it excited to try it for lunch yesterday. We chose a nice shaded seat outdoors so we could enjoy watching people walk by. We both ordered the fried chicken sandwich, which was very good. It was served with slaw and a sweet, tangy sauce. The brioche bun was buttery and so good. I also appreciated the sweet pickles as a garnish. It helped cut through the richness of the buns. Note that the sandwich doesn't come with fries. You have to order fries separately. As expected, Compline's wine list is extensive. I wasn't feeling like having wine with lunch yesterday, so I stuck with sparkling water, but will probably try something off of their wine menu next time. Very, very, very, solid restaurant in downtown Napa Valley with excellent eats. Walking in first, you get greeted by the friendly staff, and the interior is a modern cool atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the yellowfin tuna tartare appetizer and the carbonara was to die for as well. I really wanted to enjoy my visit to Compline, but I left disappointed. On January 1, 2026, we were seated in the back "lounge" area even though there were several open tables in the main dining room. I'm African American, and the choice felt intentional -- especially because, by the time we left, the main room had filled up, yet no one else (aside from a dad with his toddler, also a minority) was seated back where we were. The service itself was polite, but the seating decision cast a shadow over the entire meal. It's hard to feel welcome when you're placed off to the side while others are offered better tables. Restaurants should be mindful that where guests are seated matters. I hope Compline takes a closer look at their seating practices, because the experience made me feel singled out instead of valued as a guest. read more

After wine tasting nearby, we made our way to lunch at Compline in Downtown Napa. Notable dishes worth mentioning are the Hawaiian big eye tuna crudo and the fried chicken sandwich. I thought the Hawaiian big eye tuna crudo was really creative and marvelled at how thin the rice cracker that went well with the pickled diakon and tuna sashimi. The fried chicken sandwich was moist, crispy, and came with apple slaw that was to die for! Definitely a fan of the decor. The walls and furniture are minimalist, but makes the menu board and all the other paintings/blackboards stand out as a result (does someone actually handwrite the menu items on the boards? If so, damn...). That's character! On top of that, their formidable display of wines from all over the world makes it hard pressed NOT to find what you're are looking for.
