Brunch at La Gastronomia in Fairfax is a good choice, particularly if you like a really good hollandaise. The chef-owners bring their Italian roots to the table in a way that feels like you're eating in a European kitchen. The eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and spicy hollandaise is rich and buttery, the avocado omelette with spinach is fresh and the breakfast potatoes are properly done and nicely crisp. It's a calm, relaxed spot for brunch in a Marin town that retains some of its Nor-Cal hippie bonafides. We noticed they have homemade pasta on the brunch menu. Their pasta got a glowing Chronicle write up last year, so we plan to return for a pasta brunch.

It's not so much that I'm crazy for Italian but rather, that Marin has a lopsided number of Italian restaurants. Cucina SA is one of the better ones. My party of 3 dined here al fresco, on an evening when it proved too cold to be sitting outside, even with the heat lamps provided. So be careful about succumbing to that temptation and know that there's more than one indoor dining room, so don't be scared off (as I was) by the noise in the first dining room you enter. Aside from freezing though, I was quite impressed here with both my meal and the service. Even with two heat lamps upon us, blankets were brought to our table (I later wished for beanies and mittens) but the quality of the food had me briefly forgetting the loss of feeling in my fingers. "Healthy Fries" (delicately fried green beans, delicious) were shared by our table over wine before we settled into our equally mesmerizing entrees: Linguine con Vongole, a pizza with an overly-exuberant amount of arugula, and my order, a sublime, meatless ravioli dish featuring fresh tomatoes. We closed things out with a shared Tiramisu and something warm to drink, paid the bill (about $200 all in) and skedaddled. I'm always pleased to realize that we have more good restaurants in San Anselmo than I used to believe. Cucina SA is one.

It offers outside seating. indoor dining, and take out. Everyone has to enter through the same narrow entrance and jam up by the cash register. Take out, which should be the least labor intensive meal for them, is treated as the bane of their existence. Those waiting for pickup have to jump out of the way of wait staff. When I presented my credit card to pay for the sack of food, the woman who was running the register told me I made a mistake when I had done nothing. She presented the wrong screen and I paid the bill and tried to add a tip. She gave me a look! She reset the screen and asked me to do it again "correctly". I still added the tip but I was not satisfied with anything. I'll go back because the food is good. But, not on Fridays, even if very early. And always with a person to watch the car when I double park, like so many others do. It's a testament to how delicious the food is that I and hoards of others put up with the front desk staff to get great takeout.

The eatery has inside and outside dining with the inner dining smaller than the outside area. The extended dining area has both heat and covers available. Street parking is available so be warned but the this task is worth your effort. We chose to dine outside for the inner area was at capacity... a good sign. The customer service was outstanding beyond measure. We never saw our cups empty and at the end of our meal when we were selecting desserts, they packaged our leftovers. This gesture had never been performed in all of my experiences... bravo. The food was not simply made and put on our dishes but was created with the upmost heart. Our meals were outstanding and the desserts... the literally best we ever had to consume. If you want a great Family Italian meal, then go to Fairfax, California and seek out the Sorella Caffe. A master chef and a team of professionals await you.

We started with the arugula salad, which was delicious and loaded with roasted beets, gorgonzola, glazed walnuts, and a sharp balsamic vinaigrette. For our mains, we went with the Capellini del Diavolo and the Fettuccine Viareggio. Both dishes were absolutely amazing and hit the spot. Juan S. was our server for the night. Very knowable about the menu and the dishes. We started with a classic Caesar salad that we shared. It was plenty enough for us. I ordered the Petrale Sole special and my husband had the Pollo Pomodoro with vodka tomato sauce. Both were excellent choices. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, as were the mixed veggies. My husband loved the pasta as well. For 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine, 1 Caesar salad, 1 bruschetta and a cannoli for later, our bill was $152, before tip. Well worth it.

After we were finally seated and put in our order for drinks, appetizers and main dishes, we waited quite a long time to get our food served. Quality-- not sure if we ordered the wrong things or went in on an off night, but for some reason everything we ordered was underwhelming and lackluster, from the: -drinks (cucumber mojito and strawberry balsamic mocktails) -bruschetta was average -meatballs were sort of flavorless -spinach ravioli with pesto was bland -parpadelle was also bland and portion was oddly small Overall, the food and service was unsatisfactory for the price we paid for the bill. We were excited to come here to celebrate our anniversary and left the restaurant feeling super unfulfilled with our meals. Safe to say we won't be coming back to this establishment, nor will we be suggesting this restaurant to friends and family.

Back then it was owned by Andy Scopazzi, who I believe subsequently has turned the reins over to his nephew who was an assistant there for years. Over the years I believe I had everything on the menu - my favorites being the veal saltimbocca, the fettucini alfredo, and the chicken picatta. The service was always wonderful, as is the environment. It was one of the original 'no-smoking' restaurants, before the ban. There was also a no-furs policy, Andy is a great animal lover. He has his own ranch- a vast number of vegetables in the cooking come from there. The French breakfast radishes were stunningly good. I could eat a bushel. Turns out I ate there my first night in town (I had just started at a little start-up company that had been purchased by Steve Jobs from George Lucas). Lo and behold, Mr Lucas was sitting at the counter and about 1/3 of Santanna was sitting at the round table in the window. Welcome to Marin. The night of the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake he was open, cooking over gas, with candle lit tables. A whole bunch of regulars, we all hung out and swapped stories (Luckily, Marin was largely unfazed). The food was at its best that night. If his nephew has maintained the quality (and I have no reason to believe otherwise... he frequently 'subbed' when Andy was out of town and the food was every bit as good) then you can't go wrong. An institution in San Rafael.
