Our family visited the Colonial Cafe for the first time, yesterday,Tuesday. We have been driving by since we moved to the Naperville area last year. We were out doing errands and thought we stop by. The luncheon menu offered a lot. We ordered different plates for each of us. The food was very good, I mean really very good. The helpings were generous. The story on how the Colonial Cafe started was interesting and found on the menu. Our server was Matthew. What a gentleman. We NEVER had to repeat anything twice like we are sort of use too when we go out to eat. He got it right the first time. Prompt, delightful to speak too, and asked us once if we needed anything, though we didn't; however, he assured us he would be close by if we needed anything. We like this because it is nice when servers ask if we need anything, but to be constantly asked is distracting. Matthew did it the right way. If you should go here, and we highly recommend that you do, ask for Matthew. He puts the icing on the cake in service and food. We will be back, and we will make sure we stay for desert. I came here for a work breakfast meeting. This place is pretty cool. The menu has a huge selection. This place is a little better than a regular breafast restaurant. I had the sandwich breakfast of the day which it was a biscuit egg sandwich with bacon and hashbrowns. People were very friendly and prompt. My whole breakfast and coffee was about 10 dollars. Throw everything out, but the kitchen sink! Colonial Cafe is a great family restaurant for my all time favorite meal of the day: BREAKFAST! Sure they have lunch and dinner menu's, but if you're not here for breakfast or their dessert, whatcha here for? Grabbing lunch with a few friends to celebrate a friend's anniversary, we squished together in a cozy booth. We all love each other here, so no problem getting nice and cozy. Donna, I think, our server greeted us immediately and took our drink orders right away. Poor thing had difficulty talking because she lost her voice, but she was still nice and attentive. Knowing I have a holiday parties later this month, I opted for the healthier menu and got a Tri-Eggthlete Omelette, I think it's called, which included egg whites, scallions, broccoli, mushrooms (that I omitted) and I think tomatoes. It came with fresh fruit and multigrain toast. Our good came out quickly and it was delicious! For those who know me, I LOVE food, and that's an understatement. I showed no mercy to my breakfast and ate every bite! Satisfied with my breakfast, I know I'll be back for more to try, especially their signature Kitchen Sink ice cream dessert. I've driven past this place for ages when going to the Trader Joe's in the same plaza and only just ate there today. Glad I gave it a whirl. Despite being pretty full for lunch, the place was amazingly subdued noise-wise (always a plus with me). I started with the Loaded Potato soup, which was a good rendition (and served suitably hot -- too often soups come lukewarm at restaurants; bah!), then had half a Ham and Swiss sandwich, which came on marble bread, but the juice of the melon that was served on the same plate had soaked into the bread and made it soggy and also gave the sandwich a rather odd flavor. The melon needed a separate bowl or something, because that combo is not going to catch on. To drink I had a vanilla root beer, which was tasty. I was too full to partake in any of the offerings from the huge dessert menu, though the "Mini Treat" would have been about right (a scoop of ice cream and a topping for $1.99; Peppermint Stick ice cream with hot fudge sounded good to me). They also have shakes, sundaes (including the evidently infamous "Kitchen Sink," for which you earn a bumper sticker if you finish eating it), and other frozen goodies. This place seemed to be a servicable lunch option, and definitely a dessert destination, near downtown Naperville. So if you're in the area, come to Colonial Cafe and stake your claim. read more

My friend and I have met here in the past to eat and catch up on professional and personal news. Today I arrived early and put out name on the waiting list. Then I sat and watched the hostess be rude, mess up, and come up with excuses. I was there for half an hour. I was told 15-20 minute wait. Then two two-tops were seated. That left my party and a party of two and party of five. We waited patiently. A man came in to buy ice cream and ordered two quarts of vanilla and a coffee. She rang up hid order, handed him a cup of coffee and went to get the ice cream. The man looked confused and said that she must have misunderstood. He wanted three quarts not two. One coffee and two vanilla. She took back the coffee, rolls her eyes, and went to get the manager. She never apologized or even let him keep the cup of coffee. He waited while his order was corrected. A few minutes later, a member of one of the waiting parties asked how much longer. She said 5 more minutes because they needed to have the kitchen catch up, that it was swamped. I had been there 40 minutes and only the two tables of two had been seated. It wasn't the kitchen that was in trouble. Plates upon plates sat in the window waiting for the servers. That's when we left. So this review is about the rude and ridiculous service. We didn't get food this time. We went to Walker's instead. That was a great choice. read more

Seeet dreams are made of the pot roast dip. I'm a man, so I will never have a pregnancy craving, but I'm pretty sure my pregnancy craving would be the pot roast dip sandwich. Also, someday I'm gonna fill a hot tub full of the liquid peanut butter they serve on their sundaes and I'm just gonna soak in it all day because it's so delicious. Love swinging by the colonial. Honestly I wasn't impressed at all. We came here about 4 months ago. We traveled 45 mins because my daughter wanted the m&m pancakes. Well such a disappointment. The food was nothing special and the service was HORRIBLE! Our server dropped the food and literally was never seen again. I needed more water and couldn't even find her. Then we sat there for 15 mins waiting for our bill. And of course nothing. So my husband and daughter got there coats on and went to the car. While I stood up looking for our server. The host kept staring like I was going to dine & dash which I should have & def could of because the service was so bad. But instead of her grabbing our server or alerting anyone that I clearly needed something she just stood staring. We Never found our server, so the manager who was killing bugs with some weird tennis racket device on the walls, I had to pull him and get our check. Which he got it after 5 minutes of looking confused.. and bringing 2 bills saying he doesn't know which was ours. Does anyone know whats going on in this place? it was super annoying that the server completely disappeared. I wish I remembered her name she was a young blonde. Not worth the frustration. We eat here frequently. Food here is always good. Service was a little slow this past Friday. But the biggest problem was the hostess. She doesn't even greet or say hello. Just very surly and never seems very happy to be working at Colonial. If she's not happy she should leave because she leaves a very bad impression! read more

Octoberfest Bavarian pretzel is one of my favorite appetizers this time of year. It was warm and delicious and the homemade cheese dip sauce is Devine. It's a must try if you haven't had one! I'm kindof bummed to be giving anything less than 5 stars to this place. I grew up going to Colonial and we try to make it here as often as possible because the food and service are always delicious and consistent. However, with times being a bit different and dine in options no longer available (at least for now), we decided to order out since we recognize and sympathize what the restaurant industry is facing. We ordered our usual items and a giant ice cream for pickup (you can't NOT get ice cream when you come here ) and I was so disappointed by the packaging. We live maybe 10 minutes from this location and were there to pick up our food before it was even finished and when we got home, it was so disheartening that everything was soggy and cold. They used a cardboard style container for the ice cream and nothing seemed properly insulated to maintain the temperature of any of our items. I would hope that this would be something that would be highly taken into consideration given circumstances. We will of course be back to dine in once it's available but sorry to say we won't be ordering out again. :/ read more

If you haven't tried the Oktoberfest menu, now's the time! We got the soft pretzel as an appetizer and that dipping cheese is addictive. We also ordered the pumpkin pie shake--there's literally a piece of pie in the shake! Be sure to use a spoon so you can enjoy the chunks of pie crust in the bottom of your glass. Tried the BLTEA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, egg, avocado) for the first time and may have found a new favorite dish. I was just here once again again and it was awesome. We had 5 kids under 10 it was pretty crazy, but the servers were awesome. I ordered the fish and chips. It was sooo good I felt like I was back in England. They even had the malt vinegar to make it perfect. The kids also enjoyed their meals and specially the kids menu that helped distract them as we waited for their food that was out in record time. I've tried this unlikely restaurant for breakfast and dinner. It's hard to mess up breakfast, but in my opinion, they manage to do so by not using better quality ingredients. I'm not a fan. They are famous for huge ice cream sundays they call "the kitchen sink." Glutonous food binges have never appealed to me (besides, I'm lactose intollerent, so...). Don't know if they were understaffed or what tonight. Came in this evening with 6 adults and 2 toddlers and waited 15 minutes with no host coming forth to seat us. The restaurant was not full and there appeared to be enough staff waiting on customers. Another family came in, waited a while, saw the situation, and asked that someone seat people waiting for a table. We were finally seated and waited another 15 minutes for someone to come to our table to greet us and take our orders. No one came. We left. Restaurant is very poorly managed. read more

We really tried to like Colonial Cafe. We went there the first time when we moved to Naperville about 13 years ago. The theme was appealing as was the menu. Unfortunately, the cooking and service never really lived up to our expectations. After a while, my wife refused to go there anymore because of the mediocre food quality, although I'd take our youngest kid there sometimes with sports and other teams. I also learned over the years that staff turnover is pretty high, even for a restaurant, so you never know what type of service you'll get. Sometimes we'd find that people who arrived after we did would order and receive their food before we got ours. Not a big deal, but that was a consistent practice. The location is ideal and the prices aren't bad. We'll keep looking for a decent family restaurant in the area. Of the two locations we've tried (Elgin and Naperville) this is the better, which isn't saying much about the Elgin location. This is the place to go if you want sugar desserts for the kids and C- grade (over)cooking. I had some gift certificates or coupons or something to Colonial Kitchen and finally just threw them out rather than try to find something that was decent quality again. read more

First of all, they seem to have an excellent commitment to enforcing mask mandates. Good signage and staff wearing their masks. I deeply appreciate that commitment to public health. Food ranges from good to great- have had some really enjoyable comfort food meals, breakfast and dinner. Has become our new "go to" place when we want a homey meal. I have always enjoyed dining at the Colonial as I have found their chicken tenders to be exceptionally tasty. However, I was disappointed to find out that they no longer have sugar free ice cream available. The latter being the only ice cream I can have due to diabetes. Not our first trip here. I took my kids here today to use their certificates for free meals they earned in the Library Summer Reading Program. It was busy today for lunch, but not ridiculously so. We were seated as soon as we walked in. It took a few minutes for our waitress to come to us...but we were patient. After we put our order in, we waited 35 minutes to be served. :-( The Eggs Benedict was delicious, but the english muffin was burnt. One child chose the Silver Dollar Pancakes..well there was the right number of them but they were kinda messy looking (like how I make them but not nice neat silver dollars like we expected. However, he thought they tasted good. My other child chose the Chocolate Chip Mouse pancake. It appeared incomplete. He was disappointed that it didn't have all the toppings that were described on the menu. I couldn't find the waitress to explain any of our issues with the meal so we ate it anyway without saying anything. In fact I couldn't find our waitress at all until 15 minutes after we had finished eating. We were looking forward to having ice cream for dessert, but I wasn't willing to wait another 20 minutes to be served that when we had already been there for an hour. When we paid, I mentioned the very long wait to the manager. He was apologetic and said that they weren't expecting to be so busy since some schools were in session today. All in all, we will be back again someday...but we won't be rushing back. read more

Had a wonderful experience here at Colonial Café and it was unforgettable. This is one of the best breakfast and brunch spot here in this area. They have so huge variety of food to choose from. They have chicken, waffles, burgers, shakes, and other food that will surely satisfy all of your cravings. They offer so many breakfast foods that can fill you up. Food here is terrific. Lot of delicious options. Their place was very clean, neat, nice, and so bright. It is so cozy and pretty decent. Interior has a great atmosphere and the vibe hits different. Very enjoyable place. One of the most visited place here in this area of Naperville. Really nice diner. The staff here is so decent, professional, and friendly. Everyone here is very accommodating. All of them really knows how to be a reliable and helpful staff. Such a wonderful service. I will go back here again and again to continue trying and exploring all of their food on the menu. Decent menu of mostly breakfast & comfort food favorites, but few items you haven't had elsewhere (except maybe the PB Chipper, which is the only thing about this place that deserves a star.) Abysmal service from teenagers with ridiculous attitudes. Absolutely filthy restaurant, which is why we no longer eat here. Apparently, the teenagers with attitudes don't like to clean. Last visit I took 2 sips from my coffee cup, only to then realize it had a light pink lipstick stain on it from the last customer who used it. Experienced my first cold sore as a result. Whoever compared the food equivalent to that of Denny's is spot on. Bear in mind, I grew up in the neighborhood in which this place exists, and have been going there for roughly 27 years at this point. They recently redesigned the interior, which was much-needed. It already looks dated in a weird way that I can't identify, however. This place is still noisy as can be. It's definitely a great place for families and kids, but if you're looking for a date locale, look elsewhere. Unless you want to do an ice cream / milkshake kind of date thing. Turtle Sundae is the best. Oreo shakes are classic and never disappoint. Avoid the cheddar soup unless you have iron bowels or a decent insurance policy that might cover colonic issues. read more
