12/14/25 update: I came in and got the popular country fried steak. It comes with hashbrowns, eggs, and toast. It was only $10. It is busier than usually on a Sunday around brunch time. The country fried steak was cooked well. I loved the gravy, it has a lot of flavor in it. I also got apple cider which is seasonal. If you love bowling and eating in your alley this may seem quaint but I will never go back! I just went in for breakfast and to their credit the prices are great! I had steak and eggs for $10! I sat down at a table and the wait staff brought utensils not realizing the table was dirt. After cleaning it she brought me coffee and what I thought was cream was actually milk... had to ask for half and half. The steak and eggs sounded like a great bargain... eggs over easy and med rare steak for $10 ... but alas I think the steak was cooked on one side only and completely raw and bleeding all over the plate... sent that back! Funny thing is while you wait for things to be corrected I noticed how grimy the place is. I was sitting by a window that really needed cleaning, and during most of my meal I was pestered by a fly! Yes, service was friendly and prices are a deal but I won't go back... I can forgive kitchen kerfuffle but I can't forgive dirty cause it makes you wonder what that kitchen looks like and the flues... no thanks! read more

This is a diner place. The place is NOT fine dining. The service is great. The food is very good. It's a worn restaurant in a bowling alley. We had breakfast. I had the farmers omelet which was very good. The tasting is based on diner restaurants (service, atmosphere, food and appeal). The stars are 5 because the service and atmosphere are very charming. I'm shocked by the positive reviews for JR's. I don't like writing negative reviews but want people to be aware of what they're getting into. The place smells bad, looks like it's coated in years of grime, the bathroom was dirty, cups didn't seem especially clean, and the food was nothing special--your usual diner fare. Service was fine, prices were good, but I'd never return. Listen, I love a good divey hole in the wall but I can't defend filth. It needs a really thorough cleaning very badly. read more

We were greeted immediately by a friendly waitress who told us to find a spot that looks good. At first we thought it was closed because it was so dark. When I went to the bathroom it was down an unlit hallway with several doors. I could barely tell which door was the women's. My son ordered the farmer's skillet and I got pancakes with extra crispy hash browns. The potatoes were not done enough in my son's omelette. He always finishes his meals and only ate 3/4 of it. My pancakes had a different after taste like they made them in bacon grease. I LOVED my extra crispy hash browns though!!! The best part of our experience was the friendly staff. The health dept needs to be called. I watched the young woman who takes orders and delivers food, take fries off one plate with her bare hands and make a plate of fries cause they forgot the order. I have eaten there some 20 times, maybe closer to 30. It is always good. The menu is broad enough so that you can always find something of interest. The service is good and the food is better. I have never been disappointed with the quality and the prices are a great value. It's an simple, little neighborhood diner which is content to a great example of the king of place that every town should have. read more

Was supposed to meet a friend here recently, but he no showed. Thats ok. Coming for breakfast, I was gonna make the most of it. Place is old, and in the bowling alley, but has a separate entrance, but well cared for. Met the owner, very kind fellow. Prices are very reasonable. Service was good. On a recommendation, I was told to get biscuits and gravy or Chicken fried steak. Neither are on the menu but are secret menu items. I chose B & G. Excellent! Soft flaky biscuits, and the gravy had sausage chunks in it and you could tell it was simmered a bit. The proper way to do it! Enjoyed with a side of crispy bacon. Service was great and Id definitely recommend stopping here! Hours say 9am but I was there at 830. & customers were in there and been waited on. Id guess they open at 8 am. Great cosy place to enjoy weekend breakfast! The best corn beef hash and veggie omelette I have ever had! Not only great in taste but also good looking appearance! We visited due to the high rating but we left before being seated. So this review is only based on first impressions. The diner is attached to a bowling alley. I'm guessing mostly locals come here - maybe from the leagues. The place ia small. When we arrived it was full. It seemed very crowded. Folks were so close in proximity that it made us uncomfortable. Also there was no hostess at hostess stand to greet us. We waited a bit but then decided to try another place. The ambiance/decor was lacking and outdated. Maybe we will visit again in the future when the Covid pandemic is less of an issue. I am curious to see what the hype is all about... Hopefully the food! read more

I don't throw around 5*s. So off of a 1st visit and while eating just thinking I can't wait to give them a 5, I'm pretty happy to do so. I've seen Tim H. check in several times, 44 to be exact!!! I drove past the place like 4xs before realizing it was clearly in the Lisle Lanes Bowling alley. STUPID ME.... I entered alone and no hostess was available, but the waitress was kind enough to state I could sit anywhere. I grabbed a booth. The other tables were pretty filled. It was a nice Monday crowd for 930am. It's a small homely feeling diner. I browsed the menu, but knew I wanted the sausage/biscuit/gravy meal. The waitress even suggested it while I was browsing the menu. She also suggested I add hash browns or something because the meal only came w/1 open faced biscuit. I couldn't decide on anything else so I just ordered that. It took about 5mins and my meal was in front of me. I tasted the sausage & gravy and it was DELICIOUS. I continued to eat the rest with the biscuit and saw that I'd need more, I asked the waitress could I add a biscuit, she said the cook didn't like to do that, but she'd ask him. She came back and said I'd get my biscuit. There is a God! 2 mins later I had a hot/buttery biscuit for my remaining sausage/gravy. I ate it quickly. I requested the check and when she saw the credit card she advised me that there was a $.50 charge for plastic and asked was it ok? Sure thing. While waiting on the card friendly customers came & went, some even struck up conversation with me seeing that I was alone. This place is a hidden gem! The prices are under $7.00. The service is very friendly. I'm so excited that I tried this place and got service with an amazing smile. I've already told my mom how good it was and she's going to check it out. Couldn't wait to rave about it to Yelp! I will be back and definelty going to try other menu items. read more

Always a treat to enjoy breakfast here. Food is delicious and the service is personable. We usually find ourselves here on the weekends.

I honestly think they deserve more than 3 stars but objectively, looking at a couple other angles/factors, this place probably is more like a 3.33/5. Their biggest win definitely is the price(s). Everything's very reasonable (I probably should even say, cheap) and their breakfast food honestly tastes pretty great, given the price point. The place may look a little bit outdated and doesn't exactly have the best ambience but it does have its own charm. It's not the easiest to find them and I just happened to come across this place because my friend lives not too far from this eatery. Get their Country Fried Steak. It's not on the Menu but it's definitely my fave from this place. They used to charge $0.50 for Credit Card Payments but not anymore! A bowling alley may seem like an unlikely place to have breakfast, but don't knock it til ya try it. We grabbed a lane and were told we can have the food sent right to the lane, how cool! My husband ordered a steak and cheese omelette and I ordered the bacon and eggs which came with hash browns and toast. Both of our meals were so yummy! The bacon was thick cut and cooked well and the hash browns were perfectly crispy. We can't wait to come back again for a newly discovered outing "brunch and bowl." read more

After 61 visits, I felt an updated review was in order. He's been in his new location inside of Lisle Lanes for 2 years now. I still need to come in for a pizza. I've enjoyed my visits to Pasta Wednesdays, which are made by one of his serves. JR finally raised his prices slightly, as he just signed a new 2 yr lease. His prices are still very reasonable. He does have a $ .50 surcharge for using a credit card. Servers are always so pleasant, and JR is always in a good mood. Definitely a labor of love! read more

I can't believe anyone thinks this place is good. I'm relatively new to the area and have been searching for a new breakfast joint. Saw the reviews so we went on a Saturday morning. OMG where do I start trying to convey the sh*t show this place was that morning (I'm trying to be fair.) When we arrived ~9;30 a.m. we were the ONLY customers and it seemed like it was our servers' first day waiting on tables. I ordered my usual, corned beef hash with two eggs over-easy. I prefer canned corned beef hash so my bar is low. When the food arrived, the eggs were covered with dried out hash browns (not ordered). Q: Who covers up over-easy eggs?! A: Someone that can't fry an egg because these were over-burnt! Customers should note this establishment is adjacent to a bowling alley and while I've had plenty of other meals in similar establishments that were "home-cooked" style and truly exceptional, this place seems like it's either on or off and I unfortunately was there on a totally off day and I'm being generous. read more

Actual prices differ from yelp. Had the steak and eggs steak was like cardboard. Orange juice was 1.25 for a 6oz cup and unable to finish it tasted so bad ask for water and a coke never got the coke and the water was from a pitcher that tasted like it was on the counter for a couple of days. Don't know when the health department was there last but they should. read more

Eating like a champ without denting the pocket book should be the slogan at JR's. Breakfast served all day plus daily specials. So many options at reasonable prices. Today I decided to introduce my mother to JR's since my first visit went over well. My mother took one look at the name "KILLER BACON CHEESEBURGER" on the menu and was dead set on ordering it. I on the other hand ordered a Veggie Skillet that is served with hashbrowns inside. Apparently they call this the "lazy man's skillet" way of making them. I actually loved that idea and taste. Our server LaRae was a total sweetheart and bursting with energy. I liked the way she served her tables with such a warm heart and passion. Seriously that is how it should be done because being a server is not easy when customers are crabby. LaRae is a doll and one of the reasons why I would absolutely comeback. All in all prices are reasonable, probably the most inexpensive in town. Food items are made fresh to order cause I can hear and see everything since JR's is an open kitchen. read more

My sister and I stopped in for breakfast today while visiting from out of town. Wasn't sure what to expect since it's attached to a bowling alley. It was seat yourself. The service was great. Beverages were always filled and the waitress was super sweet. The menu prices are more than fair. We got a skillet and French toast. All of it was amazing. A true mom and pop diner. Was super excited to have found this via the Yelp app! I had a pretty crazy Labor Day weekend lined up: I had my hair appointment around the corner there in Downers Grove, and then from there, a quick breakfast and then drive to St. Louis for the long holiday weekend! I love a good breakfast place and needed to fuel up before the long drive! This is a straight up pizza place (cute red checkered table cloths and everything) but they are open early and serve the typical American breakfast. The waitress (I'm pretty sure she was the owner) was super nice, and had our food out within 5 min (no joke!). I got the steak and eggs. I don't remember what my husband ordered -usually an omelette and something Mexican themed with jalapenos (lol),. We both were super happy with the food, service and nice local neighborhood folks in the restaurant. We ate and then we were on our way to our weekend adventure! Excited to have found this place because my "weakness" is a good breakfast,. Some people like cake, some people like chocolate....I really crave a good breakfast!
