I have a lot of fond memories of Colonial ice cream, so on a recent trip to Chicago, we decided to get a quick meal and treat ourselves to some of their delicious ice cream. Boy, were we surprised. The food was delicious! My husband ordered the chicken and waffles, and said it was the best he had ever had. The chicken was crisp and juicy, and the waffles were soft and tasty. The chipotle butter, maple syrup, and pieces of bacon complemented the dish. I had the onion soup, and it was rich and tasty, and covered with a layer of toasted cheese. It really hit the spot. Then came the ice cream, which lived up to expectations. I had a two-scoop turtle sundae with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, caramel, and pecans. I was disappointed they didn't have any butter pecan ice cream, but I quickly got over it. The place has a cozy, old-fashioned ice cream parlor feel, and the staff was friendly and quick to help. Prices are reasonable for the portions, and it's a fun stop whether you're with family, friends, or just treating yourself.

Quick service, big portions, and clean! The food is tasty too - good diner food, and their cinnamon roll pancakes taste just like cinnamon rolls. Great spot for families with kids.

Everything was clean, tasty and inviting! Service tends to be on the slower side, but all our requests were attentively taken care of (except for "gravy on the side" - we got gravy on the side, but also gravy on top... my poor lactose intolerant hubby)

When my kids were little, we came here often. I mean ice cream and burgers are a kid's dream dinner. This isn't going to be a mind blowing meal, but for little ones it's great. Edward Hospital is really close by. Eons ago, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and we left the hospital, baby in tow, and stopped at Colonial Cafe because I had no food at home. Baby tucked safely in her carrier with a blanket over her, so no one would breathe on her. I always think of that day when I drive by. The food is mid. The ice cream is mid. Not bad by any means, but not out of this world. This place is iconic in Naper though. It's been around for ages and kids love it. Recently, my daughter came home for a visit and we'd been shopping at TJ's which shares the same parking lot. On a nostalgic whim, we decided to eat there so she could relive her childhood. Besides better buns, it hasn't changed at all and I hadn't been there in close to 15 yrs. We all had burgers except for my youngest who daringly ordered salmon. I questioned her judgment in ordering salmon at Colonial Cafe, but she swore she liked it. I guess I'll have to take her word for it. I'd return if one of my kids requested it. It's not a date night for adults though.

Pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. I had the meatloaf served after 4pm with corn and mashed potatoes. The portion size was great. It included three mini meatloafs. I liked the spiced ketchup they included. It also came with cornbread and honey butter. Delicious! I would get this meal again! Kids meals were very affordable. My son had chicken nuggets with broccoli. It came with milk or choice of drink. My son was very happy with his meal. We were eyeing all the sundaes coming out. I definitely want to come back for dessert!

Steak and eggs were a delight only $24.99! In addition to their pancakes which we do huge. And the server was very attentive and friendly. I can't wait to come back and try their omelette! I love their spuds. Perfectly cooked roasted spuds.

Was in this area for a check up. Wanted to try something new so we ended up here. Great place. The ambiance is very nice. Seems like and old place and they did a great job in keeping the place nice and tidy. Food is great too. I tried their sandwich with salad and it was awesome. Service was very fast and parking was not a problem.

    Swedish Crepes, Breakfast Burrito

We have heard SOOO much about Colonial Cafe from our local Napervillers so we knew we had to check it out!! Ended up going for breakfast today, Sunday morning, with no reservations. We probably waited only for 15-20 minutes, which was great! We ordered Swedish crepes combo and a breakfast burrito for 2 people! If you're thinking of trying the breakfast burrito, let me say that it's definitely shareable! It comes with TONS of potatoes and beans on the side!! The burrito has chorizo, chicken, cheese, eggs, avacado, and so much other good stuff! Pair it with some hot sauce and you've got the perfect bite! The flavors were so amazing - the sauce on top of the burrito was perfectly tangy and flavorful! The Swedish crepes were unfortunately not as great as we were expecting. Even though the portion size was great, the crepes felt a little over cooked, and the lingerberry topping was not as flavorful as we expected. We did get the Nutella crepes to go which were a lot better but again, we have definitely had more flavorful crepes in the area. Overall, had a pretty good experience for our first time. If I were to come again, the burrito would definitely be my go to!

    Best BLT ever!

Their minds were blown when I told them they could have both... ... so thank you for having the mini size! Great for kiddos and adults. It's $5.75 and the perfect serving if you don't feel like eating your day's worth of calories in sugar and more sugar. The cookie jar ice cream flavor was right up my girls' alley, with Mother's frosted animal cookies, chocolate chips, and other cookies mixed into the base. Note there's like 16 flavors of ice cream and 8 kinds of cookie dough, so plenty to choose from and in whatever combo you want, one or the other, both, an ice cream cookie sandwich or cookie dough sandwich, just the cookies... I loved the cappuccino chip ice cream and was torn between fudge brownie cookie dough and chocolate chip cookie dough but went with the CCCD. Flavors were spot on, and the cookie dough has that granular sugar texture. Fun fact: the cookie dough is egg free, so totally safe to eat. More fun facts: - there's a wall of candy when you walk in, in case you need more sugar in your life. - walk past the register to the back for ample seating and ARCADE GAMES! This is totally new since my last visit. We enjoyed pinball, Pac-Man, and a couple disappointing rounds of the claw machine. Not my 5yo over here who cried dramatically when she didn't win a stuffy. - open til 11pm or midnight, depending on the night! So fun! On the other hand, there was only one dairy- and gluten-free option on their menu the day we were there - a berry and lemonade sorbet. With no other option available, I did try it and it was good. (They had three different options we could get in pints, but we didn't have a freezer bag to carry it home in.) Jeni's was crowded both times we were there, and I'm sure it has to do with the caliber of their ice cream and wide variety of choices. I didn't count but will guess there were over 30 flavors available for cups or cones. And, their 1/2 scoops are the size of normal scoops. The smallest size available in a cup is two 1/2 scoops. And the difference in price between the sizes is very small. If you have enough of an appetite, I would opt for the larger sizes. The service was great. The location's size is on the small side, we easily found seats. The store is bright and open, and quite comfortable. It was fun and delicious.

I love that the amount of sweetened condensed milk was just right where the coffee didn't end up being too sweet. I should have gone to the Vietnamese coffee the cashier offered! I also tried a piece of their sour cream coffee cake. Warmed wonderfully, and with just the right amount of sweetness, crispness, and just a little tang from the sour cream. This was terrific, and something I would absolutely get again. The vibe is classic with lots of wood, and plenty of comfortable seating. However, if you choose to take advantage of their WiFi, you are asked to buy a drink first, and then every 30 minutes after an hour. I understand where this comes from, and it serves as a deterrent from someone buying one drink and spending a working day in here. However, it also makes Sweetwaters seem like less of a spot to chill and catch up on Yelp reviews (for e.g.,), as I'd have to set a stopwatch to not break the rules. Final verdict: while the Dragon Eye could've had some coffee flavors, the coffee cake helped bring the experience up. While the vibe is classic, don't expect to sit and work without keeping the drinks coming.
