Well, like anything new and novel in Naperville, this place was crowded. Which is difficult in such a tiny space! Pro-tip: if you see a crowd of tweens on the street that look like they are headed this way, step it up and beat them to the door, or you will likely wait forever. (Let me tell you, though, my friend and I got in before the pack of noisy middle school girls, and it almost didn't help; since the traffic flow isn't obvious, we stopped at the register [where it does say "Order here" on a thin wall] but the girls pushed past us...and I must say, if they'd been served first I would have said something, but as it turned out they didn't have enough patience and all but one left.) Some patience is required, because this is a process. The employee uses a couple of spatulas on a super-cold metal plate to incorporate whatever flavor into your liquefied ice cream, then spreads and scrapes it across the cold plate for an even texture and finally forms the rolls. There were several tickets backed up when we arrived (again, the place is new) but it's fun to watch the process. We thought there was only one creation station but then a guy came from the back room with my order so there must be another (slightly disappointing not to get to see it made, though). It's hard to find taro flavor around here, and At Munchies offers it in both rolled ice cream and bubble tea forms. The taste was good, but the ice cream is rather hard (again, from the cold plate) and needs a few minutes to soften for easier eating. Mine was adorned with whipped cream and 3 toppings (Pocky candy sticks, Pirouline rolled wafer cookie and something they called "Panda biscuits" that are really Koala's March cookies). This substantial cup is $5.95 (which the tweens were complaining was too expensive). Service is still hitting their stride; the girl making the ice cream rolls was friendly but seemed worn out, and the guy who took our order couldn't make the credit card machine work (it always makes me nervous when they run it 3 or four times...). My friend summed it up pretty well: "Since you can't get taro flavor anywhere else downtown I might come back, but I wouldn't come for just chocolate or vanilla." I would be willing to return to try the bubble tea and the assortment of Asian-style snacks on a stick. Really loved this place mostly on the taste of rolled ice cream. It was a quite process to turn a creamy liquid into a few rolled up ice cream flowers. I think somehow make the ice cream tastes creamier with some texture than the normal ice cream shop. Place is tiny with a few chairs but services were exceptional. Pleasantly surprised! I first encountered this type of ice cream in San Francisco so was eager to try it back home. I got Oreo and strawberry. They prepare in front of you and give you a good amount of ice cream (6-7 rolls). I only wish they put a little more fruit in mine and they had a little more seating available inside. We visited At Munchies to have dessert after having lunch around the corner and had a tasty snack. There isn't much to this place, but there doesn't need to be. They make ice cream rolls, yes rolls, onto which you can place toppings and sauces. Having heard that it was an interesting, and new, twist on dessert we tried it and it was enjoyable. It's different, don't get me wrong, and not everyone in our group shares my same view, but I liked it. It was a nice, fresh, and fun way to have ice cream. Among our group were children and they seemed to really enjoy the small bit of pageantry involved in the making and rolling of the ice cream, so that was nice. Additionally, they got to pick their own toppings which is always a plus. The serving size is rather large and the price is pretty reflective of that fact. The only downside is that there is a bit of a strange smell noticed upon entering the door from outside... almost like a strong refrigerant smell of some sort. And I get it, they have super cold surfaces on which they spread the cream but it does ruin your appetite just a bit. Overall, this place is something different and worth a try if you've never been. It doesn't take the crown from my favorite dessert spot in downtown Naperville, Frost gelato, but I'm glad we stopped in. read more

I came back because I wanted to treat my brother to this place. I got the taro flavor again and asked for fruity pebbles as a topping. I didn't really want any of the other stuff, and asked if I could get another serving of the fruity pebbles. I was very surprised and disappointed when the woman said "No, that's not allowed." You get 3 toppings free anyway, and I didn't want any of the other toppings (most of which are pricier than fruit pebbles!). I've never been to an ice cream shop that didn't allow it's customers to have more of what they wanted, especially when they have to pay $6.50 (super overpriced in my opinion) for a rather small serving of ice cream and an even smaller amount of toppings. I could count the amount of fruity pebbles on my ice cream. I even took a picture. I think there were 10 flakes. I didn't say anything or make a big deal to the woman, just said thank you and went on my way. The issue is more with the business model than the product or service, it just takes too long to make the darn things and I saw these guys working non stop to serve 'may be' 10 customers in 40 plus minutes and we noticed at least 3 groups leave because the wait was too long. They only serve one size which makes sense given the amount of time it takes. The ice cream tastes a lil different than regular ice cream and they can make it better by offering more options with the toppings. If you have not tried rolled ice cream then it's worth checking out for the novelty but this fad won't last long.. read more

Inconsistent. I've visited this place on several occasions and their Milk Teas with boba were delicious. Unfortunately, my last 2 visits were very disappointing, they barely added any Taro powder and what I was given was a tall cup of milk with a hint of lavender color and an ever so slight taste of Taro. So bad that not even my Milk Tea loving teenager wanted it. After a few sips I had to throw it away, that was some very expensive milk. Same for the Coconut Milk Tea from my previous visit... and they ran out of Boba! Sigh. This is a place with lots of potential but sadly the milk tea is hit or miss. Stop skimping on the flavor powder. It may be saving you money but it's costing you customers... so you're losing money anyway! When we had questions about allergy information, the staff unfortunately wasn't too knowledgeable, at all. Even having to ask what seemed like all the employees and no one quite had an answer they were sure of. It was busy and the small shop was packed, however only being set up to make three different orders at a time, it kind of took a little while. I'm not expecting it to be fast but just know, don't be in a hurry. My rolled ice cream topped with gummy bears was just as I expected. Have you ever had bad ice cream? I still haven't. An extremely disappointing place. I'm not sure what people think posting all of these positive reviews - I guess everyone tastes things differently. First of all, it takes a long time to make it, and that's okay. This is a very labor intensive process. I got strawberry ice cream with strawberries and mochi. It came with whipped cream for some reason which was absolutely dreadful... very watery and left this slimy feel in my mouth. The strawberry topping were literally two thin slices of a SINGLE strawberry. The mochi was your generic mochi - nothing special. The ice cream tasted good. It was nice and creamy with good strawberry flavor. Unfortunately, it was overworked and the cream they use is of very low quality. Once again, it left a slimy feel in my mouth. To top it all off, the entire thing was almost $14 for the two of us. Seriously not worth it. Do yourself a favor and try Frost gelato for example. I've been dying to try rolled ice cream so I was so excited to find this spot! I enjoyed the ice cream, but the customer service not so much. The counter looks as though you order first then pay, but apparently it was the other way around as one of the girls curtly pointed out. The cashier was very impatient and didn't hide it at all while I made my decision. I asked for a mix of strawberry and pina colada flavor and was told pine colada can't be mixed. He pointed to a tiny little piece of paper that was smaller than a post it not on the counter, completely out of anyone's line of sight indicating that it couldn't be mixed. You would think this would be displayed on the menu board above the counter that people can actually see... the girl who made the ice cream and added the toppings was the nicest person I interacted with though she hardly said much. We were not treated with hello but left with a "have a good night", but upon asking what her favorite flavors for rolled ice cream were she gave us great responses. We settled for her two favorite, one oreo and one mango-strawberry. She made it very quickly and was very generous with toppings. There was limited seating but it was not crowded so we got a table. I really wanted to like this place because it's novel: they take a sweet cream base and blend it with either fruit, Oreos, chocolate syrup or matcha on a very cold metal surface. After blending it by hand with two short metal spatulas, they smooth it flat and roll strips of the now-frozen ice cream. You end up with around 6 rolls that they put in a cup, and you can choose 3 toppings: sprinkles, mochi pieces, Pocky sticks (cracker sticks dipped in chocolate), gummi bears, M & M's, animal crackers, or Panda crackers (quarter sized crackers filled with chocolate cream). Whipped cream and strawberry syrup do not count towards your toppings. The ice cream is very smooth, I didn't think it was waxy at all. I had chocolate, which wasn't very chocolatey; my husband had Oreo which I did like better and seems to be their best seller. My biggest source of dissatisfaction is the price. $5.95 per serving? I would like to see a smaller portion option for less. The Hong Kong waffle for $5 was a disappointment. Instead of being somewhat airy and crisp on the outside, it was dense and sat like a lump in our stomachs. The interior is small and a long table takes up most of the space. A tight squeeze if there is a line of people waiting for their ice cream. There is also counter seating at the window that parallels the table. The husband and I stopped in here last night and were delighted to find it not overrun with sassy teens (no offense to sassy teens. I was one once. But I just wanted to peacefully eat ice cream in yoga pants without youngin' judgment). We walked in and no less than 3 people asked if we needed help or had questions. Basically how it works is that you choose your ice cream flavor (up to two!), pay, and watch the magic begin. I got chocolate and was pleased to find it's a cream base that they add chocolate to, not just a chocolate flavored mix. The gal mixing mine went right to work chopping it all around a chilled slab, spreading it out, and ultimately, rolling it up. Hubs got chocolate/raspberry and had actual raspberries chopped into his! Then your treat is handed to another person who adds your (up to three) toppings, and off you go to enjoy. I added whipped cream, panda cookies (cmon, we all know these are just koala yummies from our youth, right?!) and sprinkles. Husband and I left and ate in the car because again, you can be overrun by teens in Naperville at any time. The most surprising thing for me is that this wasn't just gimmicky and cute - the ice cream was DELICIOUS. The texture was rich and smooth, and the flavor was on POINT. The crunchy panda-koala-whatevers were a fun addition. And the portion was SIZEABLE! I was pleased. The only downsides: if this place is busy, it's nightmarishly small. Parking is a bear (we didn't even try and just headed to the parking garage). And the price is whoaaaaa. $13 for two cups of ice cream was steep. Overall, Munchies is a fun quirky addition to your ice cream rotation in DT Naperville - it's not gonna replace cookie dough creations, but it's naughtier than any of the froyo joints. There were about 4 people in line and all lined up by the ice cream display, naturally I figured that's where the line started. A small place card indicated that you could choose up to 3 toppings excluding the whipped cream. The gentlemen that was taking the orders was taking orders from the family that was directly in front of me. As he continued working on their order, I noticed another line had started forming by the register, confused I asked the gentleman if the line was on our side as he was just getting and order from the customers ahead of us. WHAT??? Nope the line is located by the registers, you order and pay first and then wait in front of the ice cream display (again so tiny and cramped!!) The guy assured me that he would work on my ice cream before the others that had placed their order before me. He did but my friends that were in with us had to wait over 15 mins to get their order done. The ice cream is handed by the registers yet the spoons are on the opposite side of it. So again you have to excuse yourself as you go down the little lane to grab a spoon and napkins. WE waited over 15 mins for my friend to get her order! That is insane for ice cream, their system needs work. Instead of calling out your name or a number they call you the ice cream flavor you order which eventually there will be doubles, triples, etc. multiple people were coming forward thinking it was their order. Also they only have two machines so I believe that is part of the problem with the long waits, it really is time consuming to roll it out. My first time going there. After reading review saying that it might take a while to make the ice cream, I was hesitate. But luckily, the parking was super easy, and there was no lines. So I went ahead. It doesn't take long at all, perhaps only 1 or 2 minute. I ordered two mango flavored, and a cheesy chicken. Fresh out of fryer, crispy outside, and juicy and cheesy inside. My picky son ate the entire thing! The ice cream is super fresh! The staff said they make it from scratch every morning! Quite amazing! The rolled ice cream was really good, I would give that four stars. But the service was poor, and the young lady doing the toppings lacked product knowledge. We were there yesterday and tried to order the potato skewer and the shrimp snack to go with our ice cream (cannot remember the exact names.) The cashier told us no food was available. We asked why and her reply was, "We did not open the kitchen today." Why would a new shop not open their kitchen on the busiest day is beyond me. Seemed as if they did not want to have it open. She did not apologize or offer any explanation, just started at us blankly. Once our ice cream was done, my boyfriend and I went to select our toppings. I asked for pirouettes and he asked for Pocky Sticks, again she stared at us blankly and just sat there. An older lady stepped forward to help her out. The ice cream was great and had a nice density. Let's start positively: the ice cream was very tasty. I got the Oreo with boba, fruit, and a cookie on top. It was super creamy and sweet and very delicious. Ugh, now the rest: it took FOREVER because of a long line and short staff (3 people total when each order takes about 5 minutes), the cups for the ice cream are too short so when you try to get a scoop with ur spoon the toppings spill off the top, it was approximately 1000 degrees inside the shop and no where to stand, no organization at all so if you go to sit down and they call out "Oreo ice cream" anyone can jump up and take it, and WORST of all the boba milk tea was completely undrinkable.
