5 out of 5 on the honey basil beer. I walked twenty minutes from my downtown hotel for this one and was not disappointed. Soon after my first drink, i knew there would be subsequent glasses. To support my decision to keep drinking, I ordered the street tacos and kale salad. I think the tacos were a little unexciting for me, but loved the grill on the kale in my salad - definitely something I want to try at home. Waitress tried to convince me to try a few other beers from their menu and I thought they were really unique. However, I stuck with the full glasses of honey basil and hope one day they'll scale up to distribute this stuff. read more

Well Maggie and James are fantastic. The beer they serve is always very good. The food is excellent. The fish and chips are tasty. The bread pudding is definitely comparable to the bread pudding I get when I am home in New Orleans. Blue cheese fries are to die for. Cloud Nine is a great place to grab a really good bite to eat and a great beer while in Boise. On my visit I had a basel and balsamic chicken sandwich which was delicious and very filling. I keep clicking between the 2 star and the 3 star. I guess overall its a 2 star place because of what it says after the 2 star "Meh. I've experienced better." And that is totally true. It was not A-OK it was mediocre at best I dont like the location but doing the best the can with the location they have to deal with. The beer was fine. Nothing great but not bad. The food was OK. we got the hummus platter and I was told that the best part of the platter was the pita chips. The staff congregated behind the counter and were having their own tasting party. When our waiter did come over he would ask a question and then just linger. It was weird and when I pointed it out to the other people in my party everyone agreed that it was almost creepy. I thought it might have just been me but when everyone agreed with me I felt like my feelings were validated. Slightly on the pricey side but that wasn't the reason for the lousy review. It was all combined. Bad location, OK beer, bad service, and overall just not a fun warm environment. We wont be back because there are many other breweries and many other good places to eat in Boise. Its a 2 star place. read more

Not my favorite visit to the ole' Cloud today: bread pudding was overdone (burned) on top, and wine had been open too long (I know, it's a beer spot, but not everybody in the group drinks beer). Most egregious was seeing the entire kitchen staff unmasked, including person who appeared to be manager. I'm already going out of my comfort zone to dine in and support a business I like; please don't make me regret that decision. read more

Celiac friendly environment. The GF Mac 'n cheese is delicious. I added bacon to my Mac and oh my goodness....SO GOOD! The bleu cheese fries are also super yummy. I'm always happy when I have to eat fries with a fork. Beer wise....I'm no beer aficionado as my go to is Budlight. My brother takes me to breweries all the time and I always order either based on my brothers recommendation or what the waiter says when I say "I'm a weenie, and completely rude: what's the closest you've got to budlight?" The waitress was asked the horrid question that always makes my brother uncomfortable and she told me to get the "gentlemen prefer blonde" ... I HATE THAT NAME. I didn't order it because of the name (petty I know) but I also noticed we weren't the only people avoiding it. I ended up getting the honey basil beer. That was a very interesting experience. Ultimately: I found out they also make their own root beer. That root beer got me to cloud nine. Thanks! I've read the staff Ian friendly, to which I would disagree. The staff isn't smothering and gives you space to exist. I personally prefer that. With that said, food is great, beers are extraordinary. This is one of my favorite local breweries/restaurants. I love that the rotate their seasonal beers often because it gives me a chance to try out different kinds regularly. I also love that they experiment with some bold and sometimes unusual ingredients. I haven't met a beer I didn't like out there yet. And don't even get me started on the food. They have a small menu but everything on it is excellent. I love their chicken pesto sandwich, pork and beef sliders, appetizing tacos, burgers, .... Mediocre beer and poor service. We walked in and were told to just seat ourselves. Then it took 10 min for a waitress to show up and she walked off after taking our beer order before we had a chance to order food. Then we waited for another 15 min before she came back to take our food order and turned out she had completely forgotten our beer order. Needless to say we didn't bother to order food at this point as I was quite annoyed and just wanted to leave. The beer was just ok. We got the porter and the Scottish ale. You know, it's never going to be a good review when the service is really bad. But, then the food came. I was hoping the food - which sounded really good and SHOULD have been - was sloppy. A prosciutto chicken sandwich should have prosciutto. But I did get a ton of Mayo and enough mushy red peppers for two more sandwiches, so I had that unexpected little bonus! Now, I don't know what may have put these two ladies into a mood that I had the privilidge to experience, but it's not my fault. Who ever owns this gastro pub better get a handle on the staff - because I won't be the only one that notices. That was the first time I have ever EVER left a zero tip. Yep, it was that bad. Oh, and if you hear or read another comment fairly soon after you read this review on the crummy fries, hurry up and change those fries. Great place for food sensitivities. I cannot eat gluten or dairy and Cloud 9 had their menu well marked on what items could be made gluten free or vegan. The staff was very helpful and did not make me feel bad for asking several questions about the food. My grilled veggie sandwich and salad were very good and I loved the cider they had. I recommend this place for anyone, but especially for people with food sensitivities (where eating out can be stressful). I will be back. read more

Had a nice DIPA to drink. Very smooth, and not over the top. The Scotch wee heavy is pretty decent as well. Had a nice lunch special of fried steak strips. They were awesome! Ordered a cup of soup to complete the lunch ensemble. It was a potato, kielbasa, and kale concoction that warmed the cockles of my cold heart from the inside out. What can I say? It was pub grub done amazingly well. Good hearty simple food. I was served by a pleasant longer haired bearded gent, who knew his shit about the brews. Service was quick and attentive. First and foremost, GREAT service here... especially for just having opened, it was really impressive how personable and capable the bartenders/servers were. At one point, there was one person working the entire front of the house, and it got really packed - she somehow managed to keep her cool and continued to be very friendly - an employee from the back of the house came up to offer help with anything she could. Whoever was in charge of hiring them, good call! Now for the food and beer. Beer was delicious... I had the salted caramel stout, followed by an IPA - both tasted great. My wife ordered the blonde and really enjoyed it as well. It was fun to be able to watch the brewers in the back from our seats at the bar. For an appetizer, we tried the beet street tacos - sounded a little strange with pickled beets and ancho cabbage slaw, but they were DELICIOUS. They also were full-sized tacos, bigger than we expected. For the main course, I got the burger and fries. Gaston's bun was delicious as always, and the burger had a great, savory flavor to it. Would definitely order it again. Fries with homemade ketchup were delicious as always - my wife almost got smacked for stealing some! As for her, she ordered the macaroni and cheese and absolutely loved it - extremely creamy, came out piping hot with a crispy panko topping on it. Overall, awesome drinks, awesome meals. We will DEFINITELY be going back. Because the menu is so small, I hope they will continue to change and update it so that people who want to frequent the pub can continue to try new dishes. read more

I was really hopeful about both the beer and food at Cloud 9 after reading so many positive reviews. Unfortunately, my experience differed than most. I ordered the Black IPA which was not much of an IPA but more of a full bodied porter. Not what I was expecting but the best beer of the night. I went out on a limb to try the Honey Basil Ale--not usually my beer of choice but based on such high reviews I was willing to try. It was not drinkable. Flat and watery with a taste of honey only. I went to the bar to tell my less than responsive server to ask for a replacement. She passed off my complaint suggesting the beer needed carbonation. Well, yes it did! No commentary or explanation needed. I ordered the 7 Grain Porter as a replacement. Not very memorable. The food was just ok. The lamb burger was over cooked when I had ordered medium. The side grilled kale Caesar salad with croutons and dressing were the saving grace and the buns were good too. read more

The Mac and cheese is outstanding and so are their IPAs. Awesome people, dog-friendly patio, and good food and drink? How can it get better? The early grey stout that's on rotating right now is a nice rich brew with the dark floral backing of the tea itself; a little smoky, a little chocolate-creamy, and deliciously lacy foam. I'd absolutely recommend this place to anyone who's into craft beer and good food. Bonus points for organic beer and vegetation/gluten-free options. Cloud Nine is one of the best beer+lunch spots in Boise. Their food is consistently impressive (I recommend the Asian salad with salmon, yummm), and their beer is just lovely. They have a large selection and rotate what's on tap so you can often find something new. Some noteworthy brews are the Gentlemen Prefer Blonde (well-rounded and refreshing), the Amber (quite hoppy and not overly malty), and the DIPA (when you're looking for something with a bit more POW! KAZZAM! BAM!). One of the best parts about this place is the fact that they brew on site, so you can watch them make their magic... and oh my goodness, the smell of malt and freshly pitched hops... it melts me. read more

Being a transplant from Oregon (10 years this June, how time flies!) I am no stranger to small batch breweries. This is the first opportunity I've taken to sample anything local in quite awhile and I have to say I'm impressed! Cloud 9, famous for it's small batch brewing, is also in a very small space. If you remember the Moxie Java tucked in the corner of the strip mall across 17th street from Albertsons on State, you know now where to find them! Since size is irrelevant in most things, that's just an aside. I found the vibe to be clean and open when I stepped into Cloud 9. They don't take reservations, and yeah, the place is small, so if you are going as a group either send a scout ahead or hope for a lull in patrons. The brew list is clearly recorded on chalkboards behind the bar- house brews as well as guest taps offer a wide variety of beers ranging from the palest pale ale to a murky dark and delightfully noted Salted Caramel Stout. Samplers, 8 ounces and pints make it easy for beer fans of all levels to sample and enjoy. I started with the stout- a big leap when my palate isn't what it once was in terms of handling 'thick' brews, but I knew right away it was the right choice for me. The sinus tingle waft of the salt as I raised the glass to experience the bouquet was the green flag and I that first taste pitched me a home run. I often find stouts, no matter what the brew master has mixed in to derail it, a bit too bitter for my palate. I was quite surprised to find that this wasn't the case with the Salted Caramel Stout at Cloud 9. I had first asked for a glass of the Orange Wit, but none was available- now I know why. I was meant for that stout! I would have likely quaffed the entire 8 ounces, except I hadn't eaten since lunch, I wanted to try more varieties and I didn't fancy having to make my way out the door on my lips.. so I put on the brakes while my companions for the evening made their choices. I perused the menu for a dinner choice. Offerings at Cloud 9 are spare in quantity but appear to be quite well thought out it terms of using fresh ingredients and artful preparation. I chose the Chicken Pesto Sandwich. A grilled chicken breast with mozzarella, tomato, lettuce and a generous slather of pesto on a roll. Choice of side dish included a salad, fresh cut fries, soup or a quinoa salad. I opted for the fries, along with a side of the homemade ketchup. While I waited for my food I conversed with my companions, sipped at my water and enjoyed sip after lovely sip of that stout. Having noted a Huckleberry Cream on guest tap, I decided that I had to give it a try. My food arrived, looking quite inviting. My first impression of the fries is that they were a bit soggy, but the flavors were there, and the homemade ketchup made up of the bit of limpness. The sandwich was tasty with just enough pesto and slices of wonderfully ripe tomato. The only thing I wished for was that the bun it was presented on had been warmed in some fashion, as it was cold to the touch. The Huckleberry Cream ale was a light and delightful counterpoint to the chicken sandwich, the garlic in the pesto helped to present the touch of sweetness in the ale to perfection. Cloud 9 is close to my place of employment. If not for the fact that it would get me in big trouble I'd tag it as an occasional stop for lunch! As it stands, I have added it to my list of places to linger at after work on a few summer evenings to come. I look forward to sampling other brews, both local, and appearing as guests. For 2 8oz glasses of loveliness and my dinner, I paid just over $16 and call it well worth it! read more

I really love the atmosphere of a good brewery. They always seems to attract the same "type" of people. Not really sure how to define the "type", but I think many of you will know what I mean. There is just generally a good vibe, good beer and good food. I don't think I would define Cloud 9 as the best brewery I've ever visited, however I would say that it deserves a solid 3. The location is unexpected and quite frankly a little odd. Found in the back corner of a strip mall, just doesn't seem to flow in my opinion. In fact, I don't think I would have driven back looking for it, if my GPS didn't tell me "I had arrived." That being said, it definitely is not a brewery the average joe would happen to drive by and make a mental note to try it someday. I think most find this location, based on word of mouth or a search on yelp for breweries. The building itself is very, very small. I believe I was told it used to be a Moxie Java, so that gives you some kind of visual for space constraints. They do not take reservations, which opposes somewhat of a problem if you are meeting a rather large group of people there. (which was the case for my visit). Second trip for an UYE. The serving staff was very friendly and attentive. They didn't bat an eyelash at our large group with requests for so many split checks. And later when we reviewed our bill and realized we had been overcharged, there was no question about fixing it. The food selection is limited, but they do only offer farm fresh options and I would assume they do not sell a TON of meals each night, so I can understand the quality over quantity concept here. That being said, I was impressed that they offered gluten free mac and cheese. Which is what I chose to give a try. It was honestly just okay. The first couple bites were good, but then I realized the cheesiness was just kind of flat. I added chicken for some extra protein and ended up paying $14 for the meal. Seemed a bit steep for a small bout of mac and cheese. Side options were limited. I thought the quinoa salad was a no brainer, but it also fell a little flat somehow. I do have to give them serious props for offering Omission on their beer list. For those not familiar with it, this is a GF beer. I honestly very rarely run across this, especially in a brewery; let alone a nano-brewery. So good for you Cloud 9, thank you for allowing an outside beer in your brewery for those that sadly can't drink the real stuff. I did take a few sips of the good stuff, because I mean how can I resist. This is what a brewery is known for and how can I provide a solid review without? The honey ginger was light and refreshing. The huckleberry cream smelled fantastic, but seemed to almost have a weird aftertaste. Basically tasted nothing like it smelled. All in all, probably not on my top 3 list of breweries; but I also honestly don't come to this part of town frequently anyways; so that doesn't really help their cause. read more

The Mister and I have been to Cloud 9 twice now and both times have been very impressed by their wonderful small batch beers, fresh seasonal menu, and friendly service. The brewery and pub are both located in the same small space in a north end strip-mall; which is the rare combination of being both car friendly, with ample parking, and bike/pedestrian friendly with bike racks and well maintained sidewalks that lead into one of Boise's most sought after historic neighborhoods. There is limited seating in the venue itself, this is a "nanopub" after all, with a handful of tables and bar stools. Yet if the weather is nice they have additional seating on the "patio" which is basically the partially covered deep sidewalk out front. Cloud 9 is a certified organic brewery and tries to source all of their ingredients locally whenever possible. The menu reflects this desire to remain organic and local by changing often to serve what is seasonal and available. So far I've sampled the Beet Salad, Street Tacos, Blue Cheese Fries, and Mac & Cheese and everything has been excellent. As far as beer goes I haven't had anything I didn't like, but my two favorites were the Lemon Ginger Wheat (summer in a glass) and the Salted Caramel Stout (the perfect dessert). As this is a relatively new establishment I went in ready for spotty service, as I always think new restaurants need a couple months learning curve to get fully in the swing of things, but I was pleasantly surprised both times. The service was excellent, efficient and friendly, and our food and drinks came out quickly. All in all this is a great local nanopub and we will definitely be going back. read more

Cloud 9 is the first place I had lunch when I moved out to Boise. I love returning because it's always a good experience. The food is consistently delicious and the beers are wonderful. The servers and bar-meisters are friendly and knowledgeable about their products. If you are a fan of good beer, definitely give this place a try. They offer a beer sampling flights and have a surprisingly versatile and well rounded list of offerings. I typically go here with at least 2 other self-declared beer connoisseurs and order a flight to determine what will be best with what I want to eat that day. That brings me to the food. It's terrific. I highly recommend the grilled kale caesar salad with salmon. I am not sure how they cook the salmon, but it's always perfectly done. It is ever so slightly crisp on the outside (as though they had hit it with a creme brulee torch briefly before bringing it out) and the fish is tender and creamy. Just what you'd want from a beautiful piece of fish. I haven't had a ton of other plates because this one is just so perfectly executed every time, but bites I have had of others' plates are always very good. If you're in the area and looking for a great beer and some really good food, all without breaking the bank, come to Cloud 9. You will not regret it. One thing to note; they do not take reservations, so you may have a brief wait if you have a group of more than 4. Otherwise, there's usually room at the bar or a table. read more

We were in town for the day to have lunch with our kids and were looking forward to a meal on the patio after a lovely spring hike. Unfortunately, it took entirely way too long for us to get both our food and drinks orders. We ordered fish and chips to split and the fries were cold. My daughter ordered her hamburger medium rare and her burger came well done. We were there for over two hours for a simple lunch. While I sympathized with their challenges regarding being under-staffed, the wait time on the drinks and food orders was even too long for me. We've always loved Cloud 9, so I hope this is a one time incident. read more

Hard to say anything constructive about one of my favorite eateries. House made nearly everything. Soup choices and specials keep my foodie palate excited. Herbs and spices truly find their creative licenses in the salads, burgers and veg choices. There's something to please everyone on this menu.
