I went there tonight with family. I am rather large and when they say elvow Room Thats what they mean. I had to ask 2 people to get up so i could walk to my table. We were squeezing in at our table very uncomfortably. I wanted to sit next to my grandma but she was the only one who could physically fit in one of the seats which was no where near a seat a fatty like me could fit in. Honestly i feel like crying after being there. I am fat bc kf medical issues and it upsets me a lot. Then to go here and basically not be able to fit anywhere in there made me feel awful And i am crying ahile I write this. My brother in law said they have great french onion soup. Boy was he wrong! The soup lacked the traditional flavors of French onion soup. It was very wattery and i seriously disbliked it. Along comes my main course of scallops with a side of pasta. I love scallops notmally. The ones i got tonight were extremely fishy tasting. But not good fish like a rotten fish. The sauce was watery and lacked seasoning. So i had rotten fish over pasta. Actually compared to most nyc restaurants the restaurant was actually spacious. Our waitress was so sweet. We did come on a Monday afternoon so it wasn't so busy. I have never had a more delicious steak - the marinated porterhouse was the best steak I've ever had ( and I had been to Peter Lugers the week before. ) it was cooked to perfection with the perfect amount of flavor. The smash burger was also delicious. I remember when I was in Vegas a guy I was talking to told me he used to live out here and I had to try cliffs. I think everyone should have at least one happy place, I'm fortunate to have a few and the Elbow Room has always been one of those restaurants for me. Fancy? I guess in its own right it is, I feel at home eating here. To me, this place is all about amazing marinated steaks, killer stuffed clams, a burger that puts most other burgers to shame and never pass up what they have on their specials menu. Amazing burgers! The place is known for steaks, but I went for the marinated burger this time, perfectly cooked medium. The fries were super crisp, and the onion rings were perfectly crunchy too. Such a great combo. I was a bit thirsty afterward since the marinade is on the salty side, but still delicious. We sat at the bar, and the service was quick and friendly. Honest opinion time, I was very excited to finally try out the famous Cliffs but by the time I left I just felt like the entire experience was....meh If you've taken the trip, you already know what to expect. A small town no frills bar/steak house with about 10 tables in the dining area that's been doing things the same way for many many years. Sounds like it should be a hit but what I didn't expect is how truly aged the location is for example a non functional toilet and no ac/fans on a 90 degree day made things a little uncomfortable right from the start. I could easily get past the current state that the restaurant is in because what it really comes down to is the food, right? So here's my thoughts: Baked clams - as others have said you either love them or hate them. To me they tasted as if you took a can of Campbell's mushroom soup and little pieces of clam and threw it in a blender. Take the puree, fill a half shell and toss that straight into a broiler. It was certainly different. Dinner 1 - Shell steak special no marinade rare. Included a soup and potato. Steak was cooked right and there's really not much more to say about that. Opted for the new England clam chowder which was ok (smalls clams, potatoes, missing the richness I look for) Dinner 2 - Tbone special w/ their famous marinade rare and compound butter. Included potato and salad. So where to start, well the cook on the steak was more medium rare but I rolled with it. Right away I noticed the filet was tiny but the extra strip was enticing...until I cut into it and found just a big bone with no meat so that was disappointing. As for the marinade, it certainly gave the steak a nice color but overall i felt it really lacked any flavor and found myself reaching for the salt and pepper more then I'd like to admit. Compound butter is always a nice touch. Basic house salad w/ blue cheese did it's job. So overall at $50 a steak, I just felt like there could've been a little more to it. Basic potato choices were baked, fries, or mashed and after seeing the size and color of the baked potatoes at the table next to us, we both knew fries were the way the go. Had the option of upgrading to cream spinach for $5 more each but overheard another table complaining that it tasted like straight heavy cream so we decided against that. Oh and I don't usually make note of utensils but water cups showed extreme wear as they were faded and cracked, forks were light and flimsy, and knives could definitely use some sharpening. read more

Y'all... I haven't eaten red meat in almost 10 years, and I was so tempted to try Cliff's marinated and charred steak. (Insert drool emoji + shushing face emoji) Our group of seven friends dined over a round table filled with dirty vodka martinis and wine. We started with their baked clams, marinated steak tidbits, pierogies, and chicken wings. My beau-hailing from Texas- refused to get the marinated steak (which appears to be burnt to a blackened crisp), but after his first bite of the tidbits, he tracked down our server to amend his steak order. Almost everyone got the steak; I got the turkey burger. The closest I could get to satiating my red meat craving without succumbing to temptation. One of the best, if not THE best steak on Long Island. Service is always great. Simple, straightforward. I always order the shrimp cocktail (cocktail sauce has a little extra horseradish). Cold, snowy day. I've always heard good things about Cliff's, so we ended up here. There's a lack of parking spaces in front of the place, but the little shopping strip has several and there is also street parking available. Warm and cozy inside. Where we were sat, it wasn't drafty and the lighting was perfect. Not too bright, not too dim, and warm wood all around. Carol was our server, and she made sure everything came out well-timed. We were going to share a steak, and she made sure our salads were just right. The mussels were large and perfectly done. None of them came apart or were rubbery when extracted from the shell. Garlic bread was perfect for sopping up the sauce. Good thing there wasn't too much of the bread otherwise I would have had no choice but to overload on carbs Fried pickles and the steak were also done perfectly. The breading was nice and crisp and the pickles weren't overdone and soggy like many places we've had them at. The marinated T-bone special was just the right pinkness and the garlic butter on top made it that much better. We had 2 Westhampton Stouts apiece, that rounded everything out. A cozy venue amidst winery towns, amazing seafood and pub food with large portions and great service! Their New England clam chowder is a highlight--it has minced bacon. Many entrees come with sides, they also have specials like seafood paellas. We loved everything we ordered, also happened to come on Burger Sunday and it was a hearty option that half the table got. Some of the recent reviews clearly have an axe to grind. Cliff's food up and down the menu is always solid and the wait staff is a hoot and take good care of you. The place is dated but intentionally so - it's part of the charm - and I have never found it dirty or things not in good working order. Good beer lineup, not so sure about the wine. My only issue is that it closes at random times; I've been turned away at 730 in the winter and 830 in the high season, for a place that lists 10pm as its closing hour. read more

The entrance has a 2-3 inch step that made it impossible for me to get my scooter in. My wife had to go get our ramps that we carry for such situations. This place is actually quite disgusting. My family told me it was the best steak they've had on Long Island and that I had to try it. I ordered the NY Shell Steak marinated cooked medium. The steak was dry and tough. The service was very subpar as well; the whole staff is old ladies. This place is straight out of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Mostly a bar nowadays, the dining room is outdated and dirty. There was food scraps all over the floor & every tablecloth was stained and filthy. There were flies all over the restaurant. The steak came with microwaved mashed potatoes & a plastic cup on the side with "extra juice" to pour over the top. A perfect hideaway restaurant in the quiet Eastern Suffolk. My husband has known about this restaurant for years and wanted to give it a try. We came in a few days ago and it had a very "homey feel to it". Think dive-bar but nice restaurant. We were quickly seated and our waitress took our drink orders. We ordered fried calamari as our appetizer. It was good but the marinara sauce looked like tomato paste. I've never seen a texture like that before, but it tasted fine. I ended up ordering an appetizer (steak frites) as my meal as it was more than enough while my husband ordered the charred t-bone. Everything was cooked to perfection and the steaks were delicious! The house marinade was the perfect sauce needed to tie in our dishes. Although we didn't end up trying it, you can have your steaks cooked black and blue. The service was very slow. We noticed a sign on our table explaining they were short-staffed and to be nice, which was fine, but everyone working there decided to eat dinner together in the next room. It was gross seeing our waitress lick her fingers as I'm sure she didn't wash her hands before touching our plates. read more

We have always liked this restaurant due to the delicious steak they have that is marinated. I did try the steak sandwich this time which was not very good and I felt like the clams had a fishy taste to them so I did not care for those but all my siblings that had regular steaks with the marinade really enjoyed them so I would definitely just stick to that if I went there again. read more

This was our first visit to the Elbow Room. I have lived in Long Island my entire life and must have passed a thousand times. We never felt like we were dressed up enough or something and never stopped for a meal. What was wrong with me !! The steaks are absolutely amazing. I had the petite filet and my husband the porterhouse. Other members in our party the same. They had been going to the Elbow room for 40 years. Yes, the steaks are pricey but worth every bite. We found out they even ship their steaks and the secret marinade. The building is small and dining is packed with tables I guess that is how the name came to be. Elbow room but The are nicer places that serve steaks or you can have an unpretentious restaurant in Jamesport that provides one of the best meals you will ever have. read more

I'm convinced the people leaving such high rated reviews are friends and family or just people touching themselves, because this place is a zero. 11/29/24 Jamesport Cliff's Elbow Room. I ordered a poterhouse steak ginger ale and my wife ordered a filet mignon and a maple old fashioned. I was served a porterhouse and my wife was given a SHELL steak. The filet mignon served did not look right so we questioned the waitress who insisted it was a filet mignon. When she returned 10 minues later to see how we were doing, we questioned her again and at that tume she checked with the kitchen and they had messed up and given my wife a SHELL steak that was not good at all...dry and tough. The porterhouse was not that good also. Next time we are looking for a great steak, we'll travel to a Scotto Brothers retaurant such as; Blackstone, Insignia or Rare 650. Still my favorite spot on the east end. Doesn't matter how many years I've been going out there I always resort to the local Cliff's elbow room. It's a no frills establishment but some of the best steak you'll ever eat in your life make sure you get it marinated. Although I'm against marinade on any type of steak this is the one place I always do it. Not to mention I'm not over price comes with a salad and a side. A friend was going on and on about this place, swearing by their Porterhouse steak. A friend recommended this place, raving about their signature Porterhouse steak. In business since 1958, it's truly a time-capsule teleportation for anyone lamenting the demise of old-school culture and dining. We made a reservation, but it didn't appear we needed one at 6 pm on the day after Christmas. There was an air of, "Hmmm...We don't recognize you..." as we entered what was pretty clearly a place frequented by a regular local crowd. We were told to sit anywhere we liked. The cozy, two-room building with lots of wood has the air of a "Bar", with a dining room of about ten tables in the back. We brought a nice bottle of wine, and offered to pay corkage, but were told by the ladies on duty that they, "...didn't think NY state law allowed that." (We do it at other local restaurants, so they probably need to update their legal understanding, but we didn't take issue.). There is a very basic wine list, essentially one of each variety of American red wine. Not a plus for wine aficionados, but our mission here was the vaunted steak, so we abided. We ordered martinis, which came in big 4 oz glasses, nearly overflowing. Sticking to my rule of ordering what a place is famous for, regardless of any other tempting menu selections (there were a lot!), we both ordered the "Marinated Porterhouse", (you can opt out of the marinade...but then you would not be eating what this restaurant is famous for), medium-rare, which the menu proclaims will be "...guaranteed USDA Choice...or better!" Okay. It came with a nice, crispy salad, and we selected the baked potato and a side order of Creamed Spinach. Since we couldn't open our wine, I opted for a glass of the house Cabernet (on their list for $18 a bottle). The steaks arrived, overflowing the sides of the standard steak platters they serve on, charred BLACK (see photo). I had done my homework and knew about their preparation. My companion asked me, "HOW did you order these cooked?" Not to worry, a couple of cuts showed the meat was perfectly cooked, with a warm pink center, and it was melt-in-your-mouth juicy and delicious! So...five stars? Yes...in context. It was exactly as described: Rustic, quaint, lots of character, reasonably friendly, serving delicious gigantic steaks...for $40! It's a unique dining experience that you will not find anywhere else...a great adventure that I know we will try again when we are feeling our carnivorous cravings! We stopped In for dinner. It's a cute little place. Tables are close together, elbow room. The staff is great. My husband ordered the porterhouse. It came out totally black; he ordered medium. To his delight, it was cooked perfect. He had a huge baked potato with it as well as corn on the cob. Also, it came with a salad. He ordered blue cheese dressing; I did too. The dressing had no flavor. The corn was sweet and delicious. The potato was a really nice size. I ordered the broiled seafood platter. It was huge! It came with a very big lobster tail, scallops, flounder and shrimp, corn on the cob, baked potato and salad. It was very generous. However, the seafood was flavorless and the lobster was not cooked through. I would never order this again. Best option is the steak, which my husband really enjoyed. read more

Visiting the Island to see family. Husband has never been "out East" so we took a nice drive towards Orient Point. Nice day for a drive but also to get an appetite! The Elbow room was highly recommended by friends and family so we dined here. Upon pulling up there was parking even though it looked packed! One person from our party went in to see how long the wait would be for four, 15 minutes! Excellent. In no time at all our table was ready. Very cozy and small hence the name elbow room, barely any space between tables. Menu had a few options outside of steak including salads and sandwiches. Three of the four of us ordered the marinated Porterhouse steak, medium rare and the forth ordered a filet. Salad was just greens and some cabbage, no other vegetables which I found unusual. Steaks arrived blackened as we were told, marinade has this effect when cooked, didn't taste burnt. Temperature was perfect as was the potato and creamed spinach (my favorite).
