We randomly stopped in Long Island and this restaurant was one of the highest rated in the area. Atmosphere is very beachy/coastal and it is a family owned restaurant with a cozy vibe to it. Our waitress was so friendly and inviting. The menu was overwhelming because honestly everything sounded so good but she helped us make the right decisions. We ordered the crispy chicken wings and seriously some of the best wings I've ever had. They have more of a sweet and sour sauce but we asked for hot spiciness and it was perfection! Pro tip from our waitress was to keep the sauce from the wings and dip our fries in it. WOW SO GOOD!!! Main entrees we got the hot lobster roll and the nut crusted pangasius. The lobster roll came in it's own bowl filled with warm butter and a toasted roll + fries. The lobster was so tasty! Selfishly, I wish there was more lobster but it looked like a standard size. The pangasius was so SOFT and flavorful- it came apart just by putting my fork into it. I got it with a side of rice and it came with veggies. I usually have trouble finishing my dishes but I couldn't get enough of this one. Overall, if you are in the area, there is a reason why this place is so loved. We went for lunch and were greeted and seated upon arrival. They have daily specials that all sounded delicious. My husband decided to try the frog legs and said they were amazing. Our burgers were great cooked exactly as requested and our waitress was very attentive. At one point the bar tender even came over and refilled our drinks. Nothing was standout and nothing was terrible. Some things could have been better though. The clam strips in the mermaid combo tasted like grilled batter, couldn't find the clams. The staff was very nice but didn't spend time walking through the menu or sharing any information. However, we also didn't ask. That being said, not a fault, but a note that if you want any information, you need to ask. It was expensive; think manhattan midtown prices, so you will need to adjust expectations as the food was not on par for that price point. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in after visiting the aquarium and were curious based on the great reviews and photos. I will say we were put off a little by the interior decor so we chose to sat outside. However, our waitress was super sweet and attentive. Also the food and drinks were divine! I don't think I've ever even a beyond burger faster! Just had a fabulous birthday lunch at Jerry & Mermaid. Greeted by two energetic lovely waitresses and I shared that it was my birthday - couldn't help myself. We decided to take our daughter to the aquarium and quickly discovered that she was absolutely terrified to even step foot in there. We had to quickly pivot and make a new plan so I got to googling what else was around there. She was absolutely delighted to hear that instead of going to the aquarium, we were now going to go to a cute little restaurant called Jerry and the Mermaid. From the moment we walked in we absolutely loved this place. It's so charming and the staff was so friendly and welcoming. My husband glanced at me wondering if this place would be any good and I reassured him- the pics online looked amazing. And boy was I right. We shared a lobster roll and a big green salad and both were so fresh and delicious. The cold lobster roll was so tender and perfectly dressed and the lettuces seemed like they were local and definitely not your typical uninspired plate of greens. This place is so legit and we will now make trips to Riverhead just to come here even if our daughter hasn't conquered her fear of fish yet. We even got a visit from Jerry Jr. who told us about his family restaurant and checked in to make sure that we were doing well there. Ooh and our server- we just loved her! We were disappointed by our selections , the fish combo could have been Mrs. Smith's frozen foods, waffle fries were enjoyable. The scungilli was a huge disappointment to my husband, pasta was a gooey mess and the fish was shaved thin pieces. Fried clams was breading and not much more. The moist carrot cake was very tasty as was the molten cake with ice cream. Rainbow cake was fabulous. If you spend the day at the Aquarium and the night at the Hyatt East End... complete the experience at Jerry and the Mermaid. It's next door to the hotel and it's cute inside for the kids. Didn't want to pack the already exhausted kids into the car to find a place to eat so something quick for the kids and something substantial for the adults led us here. To start the food came out really fast, kids were eating within 5 minutes... and adults had their meals within 8 minutes. I ordered the fish and chips... had a back up plan in case the fish was pre-breaded and frozen, the waitress assured me that it's fresh cod and beer battered. It was very good and happy that it wasn't from Aramark... hate spending money on frozen mass produced food at a restaurant. My wife got the veggie wrap with quinoa .... Been here a few times over the past month and I definitely will return again if I am back in this area. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The staff are all very friendly and the food is freshly prepared at the restaurant and so delicious. Over my past few visits I have had the crab cakes (not the best I have ever had) but still good. Have had the lobster roll cold, very good. And ate the Lobster roll hot. My favorite! Ate the Oyster Rockafeller which was also delicious. While we were out east, we looked on yelp for a restaurant and this place came up with over four stars, and it was seafood, so we decided to try it. I have to say we were disappointed in the food yelp. We ordered the seafood bisque, which wasn't bad but a small size for $10.95. We also ordered the mussels luciano style with white wine and garlic, but the sauce didn't taste garlicky and, for some reason, was red, like they ran out of white wine and used red wine instead. We also ordered a hot lobster roll for a market price of $39.99 that you had to put together yourself because the roll which tasted burnt only had lettuce in it and the lobster came in a bowl with what I assume was butter but didn't taste like butter. We enjoyed a terrific meal here when in town this Labor Day weekend. After picking up some veggies and grocery items nearby at Lewins we decided to drive over a few minutes for a late lunch. Being that if became a hot day we all loved the cold air conditioned enclosed deck area overlooking the boats and Peconic River. Our server and the staff were helpful, nice, and friendly. In fact, Chef Jerry even came over to see if all was ok and to check to make sure we enjoyed his cooking. We sure did! From the conch fritters appetizer to the thick and delicious New England clam chowder as starters. Then the seafood and pasta entrées were also delicious. There is plenty to choose from on the menu without it being too much. Some of the plates we viewed others eating also looked great. Makes us want to come back to try something else. Fairly priced items, and they also have a nice cocktail list along with a selection of beers. Inside dining area has a typical nautical theme which goes along with the name of the place, and a nice bar to sit at and enjoy a libation. The service is also impeccable and every time we go here, we have a perfect meal! This is our go-to place to eat before we go to the Suffolk Theater for a show. We always let them know we have a show, and they always get us out in more than enough time, without us feeling rushed. They know just how to time everything, from apps, entrees and drinks, so that we have a relaxed awesome meal, and don't even have to think about the time. We usually go with a group ranging from 4-10, depending on who's going to the show with us, and it doesn't matter, they still provide us with the best service, great food and awesome drinks! The bartender, or bartenders, really know how to make spectacular drinks, and every server we have had, is truly the best! If you are going to the Suffolk Theater and want to have a great meal before you go, then check this place out! Chances are you will also get to meet the owner, who is there a lot! He is just so friendly and down to earth, which is the reason behind his success; he really cares and you can tell as soon as you meet him! We've come to Jerry and the Mermaid a couple times when passing through the area. We appreciate the low-key ambiance and outdoor patio area. Thankfully we arrived for lunch both times a little after-hours or I suspect it would have been quite loud. Both times we were well-taken-care-of by the staff and were happy with the affordable variety of seafood items offered on the menu! My favorites were the warm lobster roll and the coconut shrimp. Stop by here assuming they brought back their happy hour but nope. Their website is outdated or atleast not effective for this Monday (Aug 26th) probably considering it might still be summer. I been here once for my Bachelorette about 9 years ago and I can tell why I haven't been back. I don't know why the high stats rating though. Might be better some days compared to others? We sat at the bar and got drinks (blue moon and ube whale gin), clams, oysters, and their famous lobster roll. The ube whale gin drink was eh, think of gin and tonic with maybe one drop of ube extract. I was imagining it to be more thick and unique in flavor. Did not taste any ube, just the gin. As for the clams and oysters, we ordered 6 of each and only 5 oysters came out. We didn't miscount. The waitress was flagged down and was like yes, there is only 5... and had to tell the kitchen to serve one more. She was nice and joked that the kitchen was probably drunk when I mentioned that we didnt drink enough to be miscounting haha. The top necks were okay, meaty. Not too sweet if I compared to what you may get more north in rhode island. The oysters were pretty sweet but not cleaned properly. I had to spit out cracked shells etc. Maybe only 1 of the 6 was cleaned enough. Ok, fine... now onto their famous lobster roll (cold). The bread isn't your toasted potato roll and you cannot taste the sweetness of the lobster. I should've listen to the Yelp reviews blasting the lobster roll. For those that liked it, were you regulars? Coming back from a trip in Newport, I would give this lobster roll is 2 out of 10 for trying. The mayo and celery pretty much covered the lobster taste. Most importantly the food was incredible! All our guests were raving all wedding weekend (and still to this day asking to go back)! The service was exceptional -- everyone had a new drink right as they finished their last one. I was also a crazy bride who provided a PowerPoint for the decor ideas thinking our family would set up when they arrived but Jerry's team did it all and perfectly going above and beyond.
