Plenty of food!

La Cova La Cova - A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering As seniors, our usual dining adventures rarely go beyond the nearest fast-food joint. But we'd heard the buzz about La Cova, and wow--what an experience! The food was absolutely out of this world, and the ambiance was exceptional, but what truly made the evening unforgettable was our waitress, Analisa. With the prettiest smile, Analisa was polite, charming, and incredibly attentive. Our water glasses were always full, and she ensured we had everything we needed--without being intrusive. She was, quite honestly, the most loving and thoughtful waitress we've ever encountered. At 82, I couldn't take my eyes off her--and to top it all off, I found out we shared the same last name! I was so shaken that I almost asked if we were related! If you're looking for a bit of magic, an uplifting and change, something different, stop in and ask for Analisa. And tell them Papa Jeff sent you.

Fried calamari - very tasty!

My wife and I made reservations at 4:00 PM on a Thursday evening. When we entered the establishment, the seating area was empty, by the time we left, at around 5:00 PM, the place was getting crowded. We ordered fried calamari as appetizers and a zuppa di pesce - while zuppa is translated as soup in English, the dish is closer to what may be considered a fish stew. In addition to the fried calamari we also ordered a large salad that we split. Cova is a unique restaurant that serves dinner in a family-style format. This means that the entrees are designed to be shared between two or four people. While the food is excellent, for a hungry person, the amount per serving is not worth the price. Unfortunately, the cappuccino maker was not in service, so I ordered a regular cup of decaffeinated coffee. Regrettably, the coffee was not to my liking. The Takeaways: 1. The food is very tasty. 2. The coffee is not good. 3. The price to portion ration is poor. 4. Parking is ample. 5. Make reservations.

Veal Valdostana
Tara K.

Walking in, we were immediately greeted and seated with Menus. Restaurant appeared clean, but very minimalistic decor; basic black/white/gray palette. Only about 10 tables, small and quaint. Fresh water was served along with a toasted bread & butter basket. For an appetizer, we ordered the half order of Baked Clams. They were delicious!! And the sauce they were served over was bread dipping worthy!!! For dinner, we ordered the (red) Frutti di Mare and Veal Valdostana. The Veal was unbelievably sized. It was fork tender, and no effort needed to cut. Very enjoyable. The frutti di Mare was actually a regular sized portion from any decent Italian restaurant for one person and was on price point. That said, it was excellent. The calamari melted, and the large shrimp were tender. There were actual whole cloves of roasted garlic, which I enjoyed. Again, the sauce begged for bread to be dipped. The only disappointment was ordering a $64 Veal Chop that doesn't come with a side, nothing. The a la carte sides were pricey. The service was excellent. I don't believe it's in a great location, and in my opinion, it would be better off without family style dining. The food was excellent, and I hope they're successful.

It was so persistent that I even asked what time they were open until, to which I was informed there was a good four hours before the place even closed. We hadn't even been there for that long if there happened to be a time limit. The implication was clear- you're taking up space we don't want you in. Nothing kills an appetite faster than feeling unwelcome. If your idea of hospitality is rushing guests who happen to not be white that's a bold business strategy. That's not hospitality that's micro aggressiveness dressed up as efficiency. Do better. People deserve to eat without being pushed out the door. On top of that i'm reminded of that shit experience because the food upset the stomachs of both me and my husband.

This restaurant is a cozy spot that is brimming with hustle and bustle but not in a bad way. With a 7:00 pm reservation, we were immediately greeted upon entering and seated. It's a perfect spot to dine out and actually be able to chat amongst yourselves. We were never once rushed and we were able to savor not only our meals but each other's company. Warm bread with a homemade smear greeted us while we looked at our menus. Each couple started with the appetizer for two. It looked so yummy that I almost forgot to snap a photo - albeit missing one baked clam before I remembered! We each chose something different because they have lots of wonderful choices. Our dining entrees of the evening were seafood Fra Diavolo, black angus skirt steak, veal parmigiana and grilled chicken over salad. We were all happy with our dinner selections. We finished off our meals with a sorbet trio and crème' brûlée. We'll be back again!

Surprisingly, one last table was immediately available, so that's good! The rest... not great. First off, we were given food menus, but no drink menu. Our waitress was busy, so after about 10 mins we were able to flag down a busser and ask them if they could kindly hand us a drink menu, which they did even though that's not their job. Another 20 mins go by until our waitress finally showed up to take our orders. Complimentary rolls and olive oil to dip came, which was good. Then, 3 drinks came, the fourth one (a soda, no fancy cocktail) we waited 10 mins for and then had to remind the waitress about it. We were all done with our first round of drinks way before the food came, so ordered another round. Then, the food came. BUT! Not for everyone, only for 2 out of 4. We waited a couple of mins so we could all start at the same time, but after a while decided to just start because the food was getting cold. A whole 15 minutes later, the third person got their food, followed by the fourth person, as the first two people were already done eating. Super awkward. At one point the waitress put a drink on our table with the words "I know you didn't order this, but I can't find the person who did so you get an extra, enjoy!" At first I was happy about that free drink, but a couple mins later she came back and took it away again! Gave it to the table next to us. I guess the look on my face wasn't very happy after being teased like that, so she did end up grabbing me a free drink. The food itself received mixed results. The salad was ok, $16 for green leaves, some beets and some cheese. Dressing was good, but served in plastic to-go containers? Added chicken for an extra $4.50 was good. Brick-oven pizza looked good but tasted like cardboard. I fully expected the bill to be wrong, with all the back and forth with forgotten drinks, extra drinks etc., but it was correct, yay! Probably won't be back though.

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was effortlessly elegant--soft lighting, cozy tables, and just the right balance of upscale without feeling pretentious. But the real star? The food. We started with fresh oysters topped with caviar that were beautifully presented over ice with all the perfect accompaniments--briny, crisp, and incredibly fresh. The cocktails were just as impressive--perfectly balanced and crafted with care (highly recommend going the martini route). For dinner, everything was cooked to absolute perfection. The filet was tender, rich, and melted in your mouth, paired with creamy mashed potatoes and a sauce that honestly should be bottled and sold. The chicken dish was equally outstanding--juicy, flavorful, and finished with a bright lemon touch that tied everything together. And just when we thought it couldn't get better, dessert arrived. A creamy, indulgent affogato with biscotti crumbles--literally the perfect ending. But what truly elevated the entire experience was our waiter, James. He was beyond fabulous--attentive without hovering, genuinely warm, and made us feel like VIPs the entire night. The kind of service that turns a great meal into a memorable experience. He really tried to make sure I had a good experience and invited me back to enjoy the dining room atmosphere. Because of his excellent service, I left him a 45% cash tip and told him I hoped to return. Unfortunately, the entrée was a big disappointment. I ordered the Linguine Vongole. While the pasta itself was good the kitchen had forced most of the clam shells open split. Having to guess which shellfish might make you sick really ruined the meal. Based on the entree I didn't stay for dessert. Unfortunately not being seated where I originally made a reservation for lead me to an atmosphere of rambling of a drunk sharing some pretty wild ramblings. Between the entrée issue and the drunk distractions, I skipped the rest of the meal, though I really hope the service on a return visit matches the kindness of my main waiter.

The staff is all very nice and attentive - from Jenn the hostess to Johnny our waiter and the very nice bus person who kept out water filled up always lol. Food was a bit inconsistent. We had grilled calamari arrabiatti style. The calamari from piece to piece was different- texturally they didn't match. It was a bit off putting but we ate most of it anyway because some were pretty good. Gluten free penne à la vodka was good - it's funny, when you go to a restaurant, most times you get so much food you are like who the hell is going to eat all of that, but when you don't get a huge portion, you are like - why the hell isn't it a gargantuan portion?!? This fell towards the latter - probably exactly a portion size. It was a good gluten free pasta. Chicken Paillard was the other dish we ordered- the actual chicken was delicious- very well seasoned and cooked. The rest of the salad was just okay - I've had Paillard may times and this was a disjointed version of it. The celery was a nice touch. Probably more of a 3.5 star experience because 4 is pretty high, and there really wasn't much that wasn't pretty good. Would return. Would also dine at the bar.

First, I will say we enjoyed the complimentary pita and tzatziki. Plus, our server was nice, and the inside looks beautiful with the hanging lights. We were intrigued about their only NY Deep Dish Pizza brag, so we decided to try it. It will cost you $25 without toppings. 35 min later, we still have no food. I got up to look for a server and there is not a person in sight, a door swung open and there were all the servers hanging in the kitchen, I'm assuming waiting on orders. The owner walked by and we were going to talk to him about the service, he looked at us with a big thumbs up smile and spun around and disappeared. The server finally shows up and the garlic knots and pizza arrive. It's a plain pizza; we asked if this was the one we ordered and he picked it up and disappeared (we ordered toppings). I left at this point bc my parking meter was almost up and my tolerance meter expired. They comped the garlic knots and didn't charge us for the toppings and gave an apology. As for the pizza, this is NOT deep dish pizza, it's a flavorless focaccia bread with light sauce and light cheese (plus toppings). Deep Dish is hollow with a pastry crust and filled with cheese and sauce. Don't let Chicago see this pizza. The garlic knots and ambiance raised the extra star.

The food and service were great, and I want to acknowledge our server Christine, who was a real joy to interact with. We stopped in for a Friday lunch. I ordered a salad and one of the soup specials. My Burrata Salad was $14 for a big portion of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and basil topped with a big hunk of burrata cheese, roasted peppers and a balsamic glaze. The salad was excellent, especially the creamy decadent Burrata. Half of it came home with us. My soup was a cup of Mediterranean Lentil for $6. It came in a bowl-sized portion with a big hunk of fresh Italian bread. Both were great, and I loved how the soup was served piping hot and not tepidly lukewarm like so many places serve their soups. My wife ordered an Eggplant Parmigiana Flatbread, and this is where Christine displayed her customer service skills. She told us the restaurant had run out of Eggplant the night before and ran back to the kitchen to see if there was a new supply ready for today. She came back and said it hadn't been fully prepped yet, so it wasn't available, but would we like to try Cauliflower Parmigiana instead? That sounded intriguing to us, and we agreed. The flatbread that came out ($16) was delicious. Big nuggets of sauteed Cauliflower with cheese and marinara sauce on a flatbread. It tasted so good, we vowed to try making our own Cauliflower Parm at home. Lunch ran around $40 after tax and tip, and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Port Bistro & Pub.
