How have I not updated my review in three years? I come to Clavel probably every other week or at least once a month. I usually can get lucky and snag a bar seat later in the evening on a weeknight (I shoot for after 8pm or later for optimal seating availability). My favorite cocktail has to be the "tuba por favor". I used to be exclusively a margarita girly, maybe a spicy marg if I was feeling sassy. But now I'm a total tuba convert. The tuba por favor is a perfect balance of tepache and spices. It tastes like what you WISH a piña colada tasted like - heavy on the piña. I also love the queso fundido topped with rajas (veggies) and the carnitas tacos. The carnita meat is cooked to perfection and topped with crispy chicharrónes. The chicken tinga continues to be one of the spiciest but satisfying dishes on the menu as well. I also love the ceviche - specifically anything with shrimp. It's well marinated and very zesty. Clavel will continue to be one of my faves. read more

Clavel is a beautiful spot with a great atmosphere and some of the best tacos I've had in the area. Everything feels fresh and carefully prepared, from the handmade tortillas to the vibrant salsas. The cocktails are also excellent, balanced and creative without being over the top. It's clear a lot of thought goes into the menu and the overall experience. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey for the portion sizes, but the quality does help justify the splurge. Still a favorite for a special night out or when I want to treat myself to something really well done. Definitely make sure to come in earlier as wait times can get quite long (~30-45 minutes). read more

Clavel always delivers. Only been here three times, but it's one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore city. The whole place is just a vibe - esthetic on point. They do not take reservations, so prepare to wait. They have bar seating right next door where you can wait, or better yet, check out their speakeasy just down the street (WC Harlan). Great drinks and the dark, cool, and intimate atmosphere is fun! Back to Clavel - can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The portions are on the smaller end, so plan ahead! I get the hype, and it's well deserved. For beverages, the limonada was refreshing and the Michelada with tamarind was such a lovely and unique drink. The queso fundido was so bubbly and fun to eat. The striped bass, shrimp and octopus ceviche were fresh and tangy. Both the lamb and beef tongue tacos were well seasoned. For dessert, the tres leches cake was light and yummy. Everything tastes pretty good! I got two barbacoa and two carnitas con salsa verde. The carnitas meat was pretty dry, but the barbacoa was great! I came with a friend and we were given salsa to share which I think was a bit silly given the price we are paying per taco. I grew up in California where amazing Mexican food is in abundance and I am a little skeptical of tacos anywhere else, but I ended up pleasantly surprised by Clavel. The service is good and quick. When we went for dinner on the weekday, the place was packed but our server took good care of us. Food and drink took a while to come out but the wait was worth it. Was craving Mexican food and found this spot on Yelp. This spot is a hidden gem on 23rd Street and Howard Street. It's street parking only. Upon entering the restaurant it was crowded with 2 available seats at the bar. This restaurant is small on the inside, but they have seating outside as well. So me and my daughter sat at the bar and I ordered a spicy margarita which was strong. I ordered the tacos. I ordered the shrimp and the carne asada tacos. Everything tastes fresh. I really enjoyed my time here. The entrance was a bit hard to find, and the location is a bit out of the way for baltimore. The food was good! I can't deny that, but cost versus value I do think it's a bit pricy for what you get. But it was good. The true star for me was the cocktails though. Absolutely delicious, every single one. The guacamole was also absolutely amazing. Way better than any other I've had out. The wait can (and most likely will be) long. And the benches outside are not very comfortable. When 5PM hits on a warm sunny Tuesday, you already know what time it is......But this was not your average Taco Tuesday folks. I literally felt like I transcended directly to a small town in Mexico . Clavel is by far a chef's kiss, Mexican, Culinary Experience, and I loved every moment of it. Where do I even begin?? First off the decor.. so chic, so beautiful, so authentic. Cream color painted walls , accent wood furniture, and hints of green agave plants everywhere ... a minimalist's dream for sure. The tacos definitely own up to the hype, they were amazing. Their queso fundido dip with chorizo is the ultimate comfort food, and the gobernador quesadilla is packed with flavor that leaves me wanting more every time. The margaritas are a must, with the Santa Sandia--a spicy watermelon margarita--standing out as something truly special that I haven't found anywhere else. I'm not usually a margarita drinker, because so many restaurants don't do them well--but I will at Clavel because they only use real ingredients...not pre-made syrups or concentrates. The Aguachile Roja is a must-order--fresh, spicy and packed with flavor. I tried the chicken tamal for the first time. It was tasty but a little softer than I prefer. Clavel has truly gone downhill. I used to love coming here but the service on my most recent visits has been highly disappointing. Our waitress was very inattentive. The drinks were terrible. We sat at the bar and I watched my waitress make a spicy margarita with a premade mix from a jug. The drink was so bad I couldn't even take a sip. 4.5 stars.....this place has been talked about amongst my Baltimore friends for years and now I know why! Opens at 5pm, we were there by 5:40pm and we were already on an hour wait-list!! This community SHOWS UP for this place and it's the delicious flavors, reasonable prices and friendly wait-staff that keeps them coming back. Bustling and packed-in tight;but not deafeningly loud the energy in the restaurant is palatable. With a great happy hour 5-7pm throughout the restaurant, we started with house margs, chips and guac and queso (served with veg or chorizo). The margs tasted so fresh, real lime juice and the perfect amount of tequila! Just connect these to a main-line drip for me!! The chips and tortillas are house made and you can tell. Guac was perfectly flavored and my friends loved the queso. Tacos are street-style (two bites) dressed simply and flavored spectacularly. We basically ordered one of each taco with all being delicious with just enough complexity to elevate Clavel from just another Mexican restaurant, to a culinary experience!! We decided to go here after catching a movie at the Charles Street theater. Its a James Beard 2024 finalist for it's bar. While I didn't get a drink this evening my boyfriend did try one of their mocktails and I enjoyed the flavor profile on it. Its a mezcaleria as well if mezcals are your thing. We shared the butterflied shrimp aguachile and let me tell you as spicy as it was it was also delicious. But yeah I think I finished a bottle of water by myself. I got the lamb and beef barbacoa and the shrimp tacos whilst my boyfriend got the vegetarian tacos on offer. Everything was good but the red salsa they served with the vegetarian tacos was also scorching hot. We did have to share a tres leches cake to cool down at the end. Their spice levels for the salsas are no joke. No reservations; we were walk ins around 9pm on a Saturday night. Indoor dining was an hour wait, but luckily they had available spots outside. As warm as it was there was no sun beating down on us. My only feedback would be to maybe invest in some stand fans for outdoor diners during summer time. read more

Appreciate the various options on the curated menu. FUNDIDO CON CHORIZO: good but too heavy to eat after the third bite as expected. It would be helpful if there are pickle on the side to help kill the fat. Guac and the red sauce that came with it were good. TAMAL DE ELOTE FRESCO (Cheese Sweet Corn Tamale): very good, moist, corn flavor forward. I'd say get either the FUNDIDO or TAMAL as the cheese seems to be the same so it became ultra heavy. BARBACOA DE BORREGO (Lamb Taco): braised well, can't compare with LA and NY though.. EL LUCHADOR (Fried Cod Taco): fish was good, wish the shell was thicker with more crunch. Will start off with how fantastic the atmosphere is.....even an old geezer like myself can appreciate a little dinner mood lighting. Second, the food is out of this world. An absolute must is the Queso with chorizo - the wifey and I can simply never get enough. I think it may actually deserve a round of applause!! We then ordered an array of the Mixtas, Quesadillas, and tacos. They have truly knocked it out of the park with the Carnitas, Carne de Res, and El Luchador meat options. Clavel wont cease to impress you. As someone from California, I have tried an extensive amount of Mexican food. I am shocked to write this, but Clavel serves the best Mexican food in the East coast and is better than several restaurants in Southern California. I was surprised at the guacamole that comes with the queso & chips. It was packed with a lot of flavor, great seasoning, and fresh avacado. The chips themselves were slightly thick and definitely not house made, but still very solid. The for torta, the bread had a nice crisp, good amount of veggies and avocados, but the lengua really surprised me. Many resturants slice lengua thinly and is very tough to eat. Clavel sliced the lengua thick, which makes it easier to eat, and did not overcook the meat. My party and I also got Espadin Mezcal. It had regular hints of mezcal but to my surprise, I had nice after notes of coconut. I definitely recommend the Espadin. If you ever want authentic Mexican food, I would say Clavel is a must try. Not only were the staff super friendly, the venue itself truly captures the vibe and essence of what you would expect from a mezcaleria and taqueria!!! Writing this as a somewhat delayed review but I am still dreaming about the fish tacos! As of my visit, they are only open for dinner starting at 5 PM (excluding Sundays). You can't make reservations except for the mezcal bar which I believe are hard to get. My friend and I opted to show up right at 5 for happy hour (M-Th 5-7). People line up outside to get in right at 5! If you are coming past 5 I would anticipate a wait. We were quickly seated once inside. The space is really beautiful and aesthetic. Wait staff was super nice and attentive. My friend and I ordered spicy margaritas (delicious) and the queso to start that was discounted for happy hour. Their chips are very fresh and homemade, and I really enjoyed the chorizo queso! We opted for tacos and I got a lamb taco and fried cod taco. They were both very good but I loved the fish taco! We decided to do their chocolate and mezcal pairing as a dessert. It was really interesting! Not a bad price at $18 for two people to share (considering you get the chocolate plus some mezcal). Clavel has the most authentic Mexican cuisine I have found outside of Texas and California! It's not the normal Tex-Mex food, but truly authentic. Absolutely delicious! Service is amazing! I've been really lucky lately with the service at the new places I have frequented. Clavel did not disappoint. We sat in the bar area. The bartenders were so friendly and make a mean margarita. I was excited to bring my son and his girlfriend to Clavel to celebrate a new job. We had been there various times before, and everything was always amazing. Tonight was no exception. We arrived early and waited in line. We had some delicious cocktails, tacos, and ceviche. I ordered one of the house Mezcals, and it was fantastic. We recently went to Oaxaca, so the food and drinks were even more meaningful. I wanted to purchase a bottle before I left, and went to the shop area where I bought some coffee, a wooden shot glass, and the bottle of Mezcal. When I got home and poured some Mezcal into the wooden glass, it leaked all over my table as there was a hole in the bottom. Obviously, this will not deter me from returning, though it was disappointing and unfortunate at $22. The bigger turnoff, however, was the 20% tip added. We would always tip more, but not in that case. I think adding the automatic tip is a disservice to your waitstaff and an insult to your clientele. read more

I've been to this restaurant many times and somehow always forget to leave a review. It is one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore. My friends and I always feel welcome here, mostly due to Wren's (hoping I spelled it correctly) customer service. She's great, friendly and attentive! The food is delicious. We always get the queso fundido with chorizo. It's goes well with the guacamole and frijoles puercos being which have a flavorful spice (it's never too spicy). I personally love el luchador taco. The cod is crispy and soft on the inside, never dry and the salsa is the right amount of spicy. I also love the barbacoa taco. The meat is so tender and flavor. As for drinks, I love the Paloma the most because I love grapefruit. My second favorite are the classic Margaritas (didn't include in pictures). You will be set for the night after 1-2 drinks. I went to Mariachi night and the vibes were great. I felt at home. There's usually cumbia playing in the restaurant and the lights are usually low and warm. Simply amazing. If you're in Baltimore for a short trip, Clavel is a must-eat. We stopped in with a large group, so I was fortunate enough to try a good portion of their menu. Show stoppers listed below: To drink: - Margarita - now this is anything but a basic margarita. I don't know what they put in this, but it's lightly smoky and tangy, and a really great start to the night. - El Galeón - smoky and sweet with mezcal, a touch of banana liqueur, tamarind, and garnished with caramelized pineapple. I could probably drink 5 of these. - Chimenea - scotch & mezcal, citrus, honey, herbal. Very well-rounded flavors. - The Santa Sandia and Tuba Por Favor were also delicious, and you couldn't go wrong with those. To eat: - Tamal de elote fresco - sweet corn tamale with melty cheese. Literally so good; we ordered several. - Tacos! Our favorites were the Cochinita Pibil (pork, citrus, achiote), the Barbacoa de Borrego (lamb, coffee flavors), Tinga de Pollo (stewed chicken), and the Hongos con Huitlacoche (vegetarian: roasted mushrooms, corn fungus, pickled squash blossom) - Tamale oaxaqueño - Amazing tamales; you can't go wrong with any fillings - Torta - Same with the tortas; any filling is good. This past Friday, 3/24, was perhaps my 3rd visit to Clavel. The first time I visited, back in 2018, I didn't eat anything but had the fermented pineapple drink which I loved. The second time I visited, I was pretty buzzed and don't remember much, but I recall thinking the tacos I consumed were exceptionally good. With those memories in mind, I was happy to return for the 3rd visit, hoping to get the fermented drink again (I saw it on their online menu) and some amazing tacos. I arrived that Friday at just around 6. I walked into the dimly lit space and it was packed in there! I was given a wait time of 1 hour 45 minutes, which was fine as I had a backup plan to hang at Church until Clavel opened up. Less than an hour later, I received a text from Clavel that a table was ready for my party of 2. We were seated as soon as we arrived. Shortly thereafter our waiter approached and attempted to take our drink order. I excitedly said I wanted the fermented pineapple, and was promptly told they were out. I was super disappointed! The waiter recommended a margarita as a replacement, and it was good, but not what I ultimately wanted. My friend got an order of guac and chips as an appetizer. I placed an order for 3 different tacos after studying the menu: carnitas con salsa verde, barbacoa, and carne de res. The chips and guac were good when they came out but something seemed to be missing or off with that guacamole. Then came the tacos. I ate the carne de res first and it was delightful. Not so much with the other 2 however. I took a few bites from each, but they just didn't have an appealing mesh of flavors for me. I'm not ruling out Clavel. I didn't imagine those two first visits, but this third was underwhelming to say the least. When I go again, I hope they have the fermented pineapple drink stocked restocked, and I know I will be pleased with the carne de res. Perhaps I will get 2-3 of that type of taco next time, and order another type. That way I'm guaranteed to enjoy more than one taco! Oh, otherwise, Clavel is a nice space. The flavors at this place are super phenomenal - the queso with chorizo, the seasonings on the meat, the refried beans and guacamole, the esquite! *chefs kiss* My partner got the mushroom tacos and has been thinking about them ever since. I got the steak tacos, and, same. The ambiance is also sooo cute. I've eaten at both the bar and a table, and love the environment of both with warm lighting and cute decorations. We started with some esquite and queso fundido con chorizo, which were both delicious. For our entrees, we got some tacos - Carnitas con salsa verde, Barbacoa de barrego, and carne de res. The Carnitas were super savory and the Barbacoa was really tender. Overall, Clavel had a great atmosphere and the service was friendly. I can't wait to come again and sit on the patio when it gets a bit warmer.
