[[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere and vibes here are great! Lots of cafe lights and very cozy restaurant with brick walls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Mainly took off points for service, speed, pricing, and food quality. We tried the steak, shrimp, chicken, and I believe pork tacos. The only that really stood out to me was chicken or shrimp. The asada was dry which was disappointing. Then we had the salmon crudo (?) appetizer and it was quite salty and didn't have much dimension at all. For the price I was expecting more. Service was also a bit slow. Unfortunately I wouldn't come back because the food didn't taste all that special and wasn't worth the money
We've been to Clavel a few times and try something new every time. This trip we had chips and salsa and tacos! The chips and salsa is always great. Their salsa is warm (temperature, not spice) because of the way it is prepared. We've had the fundito before but I prefer not to get that because it is too filling! The tacos are great- really good ingredients, you can add on things like pickled vegetables and beans. Definitely makes a very filling meal! We went for HH to get their delicious margaritas on discount. The service is always great, bartenders are super nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bar area is not huge so get there early for a spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even getting a table can be hard sometimes as they get busy!
So grateful that I got to come to Clavel for another graduation dinner before leaving Baltimore. My 10/10 dish is always the Salmon Crudo--so delicious and satisfying. The Brochetas de Carne also exceeded expectations. The savory fajitas beneath the meat were some of the best I've ever had. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The service was warm and passionate, and the vibe is lively.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I always leave feeling full of energy. Just to emphasize: at Clavel, you do have to brace yourself for the line, but the experience is absolutely worth your time.
What a great find! A friend of mine recommended this restaurant and we brought her with us to have dinner. Parking is difficult as it is only street parking with no parking lot and limited street parking as it is. We were there early and even then it was hard to get a table at 5:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We got a table in one of the rooms off to the side and though it was loud you could hear yourself talk with the people in your party.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Since it was during happy hour we were able to get drinks at a slightly reduced price and I had the cilantro honey Margarita which was outstanding. Our friend got a Paloma and another friend had just a regular margarita. They were different in color and taste but were really good. We started out with guacamole and chips and the guac was delicious. We were charged for chips and addition and I would have thought that if we were ordering guacamole that the chips would have come with it but it did not, it was an extra charge. For our main entrees, I ordered a ceviche with shrimp, octopus, and sea bass and it didn't come as I'm used to as there was a container of white sauce in the middle which was good I just didn't pour it all over the ceviche and dipped in instead. The ceviche was really good and very filling and meal in itself. The others in the party got tacos and a burrito and both looked amazing. I was still hungry enough to have dessert and I had a Choco Taco which was good though on the small side and it looked like it just came out of the freezer and didn't have to be made. My friend ordered the flan and she's gluten free and it looked delicious and tasted delicious but it took a while to prepare. Just so you are aware, they add 20% on to your check regardless of the party size. That's fine as that's what I would have given anyway. All in all for the food that we had it was reasonably priced. I didn't see anything outrageously priced in their menu and I highly recommend Clavel and I will be back in the future.
If Baltimore had a Mount Rushmore of casual dining restaurants, Clavel would absolutely be on it. It's one of those places that just never misses. The cocktails are award-winning for a reason! Thoughtfully crafted and bold. And the food? Spectacular! My only wish: they'd open another location somewhere like Locust Point. Baltimore could definitely use another Clavel!
I love Clavel! My favorite spot for fresh ceviche and aguachile. Highly recommend the aguachile Rojas and Salmon crudo. For cocktails the tamarind margarita was delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance is perfect for after work.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Highly recommend getting there as soon as they open or be open to bar seating or else you may have a bit of a wait. Servers were great and very knowledgeable. Noel at the bar knew so much about the mezcal and made a great recommendation
[[HIGHLIGHT]]Clavel is gorgeous and unassuming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their cocktail menu looked like it slaps. I got a spicy marg since it was HH ($4 off) and I was happy with it. The vegan taco options (there's two) were solid, though I felt the avocado one could've used a little spice/punch (it just tasted like fried avocado and not much else). I loved how substantial their guacamole serving was for chips and guacamole. It was enough for three people. And their chips are made in house and are excellent!
I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Clavel. The customer service was awesome, and the food and cocktails were really good. I especially loved the ambiance. I went on a Thursday evening, and they were swamped. The bar area was full, and there was about a 45-minute wait for a table and finding parking in the Remington area is difficult. Despite how busy it was, the service was still very quick and attentive. I highly recommend the fish tacos--some of my favorites in the city. The queso was yummy, and while the street corn could use a bit more flavor, the lime helped. I also really enjoyed the Rosa No Morado mocktail. I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu!
My partner & I came for a Mezcal tasting session. Whoa! It was way more than I expected! Dre is so passionate about this topic. You can tell. His enthusiasm seeps through his pores. He gave us a great informational session and we learned so many things we didn't even think of. I have a whole new level of respect for Mezcal! Now I'm searching for some of the versions I tasted to add to my bar!! After the tasting session we sat for some tacos! Yay! AND, it was Tuesday, go figure! During the tasting we had a sampling of ceviche, so we both ordered aguachile! It's so fresh. Oh, let's talk about the chips and salsa! We had to bring so home. They were so fresh! You can tell they're home made with just enough salt. Can you say CRISP! and the salsa is unmatched! It's not the salsa you have in mind. It's like a fresh mix of roasted green chiles. I don't even know if it's green chile, but it was DELICIOUS! Now, back to the tacos. I ordered El Luchador, Barbacoa de Borrego, Barbacoa, and Tinga de Pollo. They're all served on corn tortillas. My partner loves tacos and we both agreed they were yummy. We'll be back.
Love me some Clavel. I usually keep it simple and come for a little happy hour vibe. My favorite is their queso fundido con chorizo. I have tried the tacos and you can mix it up to try different ones. They have a prey good mezcal selection (though not my favorite spirit). Staff is usually knowledgeable about the drinks and can point you in the right direction. Staff is nice. Everyone has a lil hipster vibe.
My partner had shared this was THE spot to visit in Baltimore if you're craving Mexican. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was nicely decorated[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] and the staff was helpful. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of Mexican food but this spot made me reconsider as everything was delicious! We loved the appetizer the most!
I think the food was really flavorful and yummy, but the hype I've heard about is not all that. The ambiance is quite nice, I liked the low lighting, and the overall atmosphere. However, our table was for two and it was really small, hard to fit everything on there and we didn't get much. At some point I had to ask for something to be removed because of the lack of space. Service was honestly not the best, granted I was there an hour before close. Our server came by 2 or maybe 3 times? But when I was looking for him for certain things he wasn't anywhere to be found. Wish I could have given this a 3.5.
OMG -- I feel like this place is just a shell of what it used to be. I ate here years ago and raved about it to everyone I knew. I couldn't wait for the opportunity to come back. Fast forward to Halloween date night this past Friday -- and let's just say, boy, was this a real-life nightmare. We arrived around 5:10 PM and there was already a line outside. No big deal -- crowds never scare me away. In fact, they usually make me more excited to eat somewhere. The hostess quoted us about an hour wait, and since my last visit was so great, I figured it would be worth it. While waiting, a couple of seats opened up at the bar, so we grabbed them, enjoyed some drinks, and had a great time chatting. About an hour later, I checked with the hostess, who said there were about five parties ahead of us. No problem. Another 15-20 minutes go by, and when I checked again, she said, "You should be next." Perfect. But then -- out of nowhere -- another hostess chimes in and says, "You can't have a spot at the bar and be on the waitlist." If only you could've seen the shock on my face! I said, "We can close out here and go to our table right now." The bar is first come, first served -- so that policy made no sense, especially since both hostesses had watched us sitting there the whole time. Still, we were determined to make the best of it. Once seated, our server warned us the kitchen was backed up and food would take about an hour. Again, no big deal. We ordered the esquites, queso fundido, and some tacos. When the corn arrived, it was bland. My wife said, "This is missing something." It literally tasted like mayo and lime juice -- nothing else. I looked at Yelp photos from my last visit and realized it was missing the seasoning it used to have. I politely mentioned it to our server, who insisted, "No, we always serve it like this." I showed him pictures proving otherwise. They took it back and brought it out again -- but now it was so heavily seasoned it was practically inedible. When I mentioned this to the manager, she offered to fix it, but never acknowledged that the server had lied to my face. At that point, the night was a bust. The food wasn't what it used to be, the service was inconsistent, and the hospitality that once made this place special seems to be gone. I truly hope this isn't a sign of things to come for Clavel -- because I used to love this place.

They do not take reservations and the wait was about an hour. There was a little place to sit, wait and have a drink while waiting for our table connected to the restaurant, which was nice. Once we were seated, the food took awhile to come but they were very busy. Housemade chips, guac, and queso were great. We tried three different ceviches, aguachile, aguachile tamemado, and salmon crudo. The salmon was fresh and had a nice smoky flavor, the other two were just ok. We got a barbocoa torta, good flavor but nothing special. Split between 4 people it was a good value. I did end up getting a horrible stomach ache after this meal. Overall 3.5. read more

Excellent spot for unique tacos such as lengua and Huitlacoche (and Corn Mushrooms/corn truffle). I also recommend the tostada de jaiba (crab tostada). If you are a mezcal fan, they have amazing options for that. I was a big fan of the expressions in the "Outliers" flight. It can be a bit tough to ensure seating for medium size groups as they do not take reservations unless your party is 12-30 guests. However, I've had luck with getting bar seating for a party of two with a limited wait (20 minutes) on weekdays. Occasionally they promote tasting bar events on their website. read more

I came to Baltimore for work, and my colleague raves about this place on the regular. So of course, when we wrapped her 100+ person event we came here for a celebratory dinner. It was divine. This Mexican restaurant specializes in tacos, mezcals, ceviches and cocktails. I loved it all. We sat by the bar and were taken care of by Olive, who started us off with what I was told was a "must try" drink - the Tuba Por Favor. This features Wild fermented pineapple Tepache, coconut, house Kümmel, limon, raw wildflower honey. I had never had anything like this before, and it was so refreshing and crushable. I felt like I could drink 5 of those easy, but refrained. On to the items we shared. The crudos/ceviches caught my eye and I opted for the salmon crudo. Each is prepared into a perfect bite, and the wasabi mayonesa really stood out to me. We also ordered queso fundido with chorizo. I find it hard to meet a form of melted cheese I don't like, and this one was great. We also opted for a tamal. They have a few on the menu, and I was so happy to see a variety of tamales as I do believe they are such an underrated menu item and I wish more places served them. I could not get enough of the masa, the cheese, and the salsita that came with it. The best way I could describe this tamal, is that it tasted like a hug from an abuela, which is the best kind of comfort I feel food can provide. Last but not least, I did opt for a quesadilla. It's the perfect size, and can be stuffed with whatever taco filling you like. I opted for cochinita pibil because I love those flavors. You can tell the tortillas are handmade, and extremely tasty. I'm actually drooling writing this review, remembering all the flavors and vibes from my dinner last night. We sat at the bar, which was a total vibe. I also love the open kitchen where you can see everything that's going on. For mezcal lovers, you can book private tastings and they have a great selection or rare mezcals. You can also do flights! Loved my visit to Clavel, and can see why it is a local favorite. read more
Came to Clavel after hearing so much hype about it for the last two years. Ordered the queso app, tacos: shrimp/gobernador, carnitas de res, and carne something, and tres leches for dessert. Menu is interesting because you pick from the 10 fillings that can go into a taco, quesadilla, torta, etc. Everything tasted great, loved the queso and tres leches, tacos were okay but not the best I've had. The corn tortilla isn't fried (/heated in the pan or anything) so it comes cold, dries up and becomes crumbly. But other than that, the food's decently priced, server was super nice, the place's vibe is great, and it does indeed live up to the hype. read more

How have I not updated my review in three years? I come to Clavel probably every other week or at least once a month. I usually can get lucky and snag a bar seat later in the evening on a weeknight (I shoot for after 8pm or later for optimal seating availability). My favorite cocktail has to be the "tuba por favor". I used to be exclusively a margarita girly, maybe a spicy marg if I was feeling sassy. But now I'm a total tuba convert. The tuba por favor is a perfect balance of tepache and spices. It tastes like what you WISH a piña colada tasted like - heavy on the piña. I also love the queso fundido topped with rajas (veggies) and the carnitas tacos. The carnita meat is cooked to perfection and topped with crispy chicharrónes. The chicken tinga continues to be one of the spiciest but satisfying dishes on the menu as well. I also love the ceviche - specifically anything with shrimp. It's well marinated and very zesty. Clavel will continue to be one of my faves. read more
I'm going to be dreaming of this house margarita! It's such a basic drink but Clavel makes one that is absolutely outstanding! I saw soo many delightful things go by - the cocktails are so well crafted and innovative. I tried the Amado Nervi as well with mezcal. I cannot rave enough about the tacos! The meats and mushrooms were all so tender! The mushroom taco - Hongos con huitlacoche - may have been my favorite followed Barbacoa de borrego - both lamb and beef shank. They are tied! Caden was my server and spot on with recommendations for things on the menu. Above and beyond excellent service. The queso was very good but it wasn't life changing - I know! They set a high bar. I was lucky enough to be here during happy hour. The bar was already filling up at 5pm. The restaurant was full by the time I walked out on a Thursday night and I can see why. I wish I would have discovered this earlier in my Baltimore trip but I'll be back next time I'm in town. I can't forget to mention the amazing flan! Save some room. The space is beautiful. read more

Clavel is a beautiful spot with a great atmosphere and some of the best tacos I've had in the area. Everything feels fresh and carefully prepared, from the handmade tortillas to the vibrant salsas. The cocktails are also excellent, balanced and creative without being over the top. It's clear a lot of thought goes into the menu and the overall experience. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey for the portion sizes, but the quality does help justify the splurge. Still a favorite for a special night out or when I want to treat myself to something really well done. Definitely make sure to come in earlier as wait times can get quite long (~30-45 minutes). read more

Clavel is a sure thing for consistently good food, fast refreshing drinks. The staff is amazing and the vibe is high. They appear to treat both their team and patrons with dignity and consideration. There is indoor and outdoor seating and an additional room for larger parties. You can get take out and shop curated kitchen tools, spirits and ceramics while you wait. This is my go to for when family and friends come to town and take out when I'm craving clean simple quality nourishment. Luchador tacos , stun von piña, and an amazing beet, pineapple gingery fresh juice. read more

This was my first time visiting Clavel and I was so impressed! The entrance was subtle, humble but effective to allure attention. The interior is cozy and gorgeous, like a romantic secluded getaway with delicious food. We ordered queso, chips, and street corn and just that alone was filling and cozy! I ordered a margarita and it was refreshing. Later, I hung out at the bar and ordered a mocktail, YUMMY! I look forward to coming to Clavel again, I am eager to try their small tacos! read more

I get the hype, and it's well deserved. For beverages, the limonada was refreshing and the Michelada with tamarind was such a lovely and unique drink. The queso fundido was so bubbly and fun to eat. The striped bass, shrimp and octopus ceviche were fresh and tangy. Both the lamb and beef tongue tacos were well seasoned. For dessert, the tres leches cake was light and yummy. Service was nicely timed and friendly. I would reorder everything I tried. Loved the cozy vibes and would come back again. read more
Everything tastes pretty good! I got two barbacoa and two carnitas con salsa verde. The carnitas meat was pretty dry, but the barbacoa was great! I came with a friend and we were given salsa to share which I think was a bit silly given the price we are paying per taco. I grew up in California where amazing Mexican food is in abundance and I am a little skeptical of tacos anywhere else, but I ended up pleasantly surprised by Clavel. The service is good and quick. When we went for dinner on the weekday, the place was packed but our server took good care of us. Food and drink took a while to come out but the wait was worth it. It is super loud inside so I probably wouldn't come if I'm trying to catch up with friends or anything. My drink, the Santa Sandia, was also delicious and had a good amount of spice to it. read more

Was craving Mexican food and found this spot on Yelp. This spot is a hidden gem on 23rd Street and Howard Street. It's street parking only. Upon entering the restaurant it was crowded with 2 available seats at the bar. This restaurant is small on the inside, but they have seating outside as well. So me and my daughter sat at the bar and I ordered a spicy margarita which was strong. I ordered the tacos. I ordered the shrimp and the carne asada tacos. Everything tastes fresh. My favorite was the shrimp tacos. So good that I ordered 2 more. I definitely would recommend this spot read more

I really enjoyed my time here. The entrance was a bit hard to find, and the location is a bit out of the way for baltimore. The food was good! I can't deny that, but cost versus value I do think it's a bit pricy for what you get. But it was good. The true star for me was the cocktails though. Absolutely delicious, every single one. The guacamole was also absolutely amazing. Way better than any other I've had out. The wait can (and most likely will be) long. And the benches outside are not very comfortable. If you sit inside you will most likely be sitting at a larger table with strangers. All things to keep in mind. The food is good, but I feel like this is a place to go with possibly a larger party? read more

When 5PM hits on a warm sunny Tuesday, you already know what time it is......But this was not your average Taco Tuesday folks. I literally felt like I transcended directly to a small town in Mexico . Clavel is by far a chef's kiss, Mexican, Culinary Experience, and I loved every moment of it. Where do I even begin?? First off the decor.. so chic, so beautiful, so authentic. Cream color painted walls , accent wood furniture, and hints of green agave plants everywhere ... a minimalist's dream for sure. The tacos definitely own up to the hype, they were amazing. I got fancy and ordered the traditional Lengua Tacos and Tinga Chicken - might have been the best tacos I've had, other than while in Mexico . And I'm not only one who thinks so either lol get there early because the line starts around 4:30pm... 4:15pm on Fridays apparently lol no reservations required. Bring friends, Enjoy!! read more
Incredible food, cocktails, service, and ambiance. Worth every penny. I wish this place was closer to me in an area with plenty of parking because I'd be a regular otherwise. I don't drink much, but this place made some of the best cocktails I've had. I got 3 drinks and tried sips of my friends also to provide some commentary. The food was phenomenal. Tasted authentic and traditional- this is coming from a taco/Mexican food snob who goes to California for good Mexican eats. My favorite taco was the fish taco, El Luchador. That was mind blowing-crispy with actual flavor in the fish and the salsas and cabbage slaw complimented it perfectly. That taco reminded me of my California trips. I also tried the Cochinita Pibil and Barbacoa de Borrego taco as well. Their ceviche is impeccable too. Everything literally is amazing. DRINKS: -Tuba Por Favor (10/10) Sweet, fruity perfection. Crowd pleaser for sure. One of my fav drinks of the night. -Texcoco (9/10) Great for rum lovers and a tropical vibe. Tasty. -Santa Sandía (7/10) I requested to make it sweeter. Was good, but something in the drink a unique taste wasn't the best on my palette. It was okay. I'd get other drinks next time -Paloma de Luto (9/10) Pleasantly surprised I liked this one. Very delicious. Consider this one. It's got like a tamarind like taste but no tamarind is in it. Just try it. -Margarita (9/10) Can't mess this up. Classic and delicious. -Mezcalita (9/10) First time trying mezcal and I loved the smokiness! I wish they filled this up all the way though. FOOD: -Ceviche Sinaloense (8/10) First time trying ceviche! Simple yet delicious. Note this isn't sufficient as an appetizer to share with others -El Luchador Taco (10/10) Phenomenal. I must get this one every time. Crispy, flavorful, and hits all the right notes -Barbacoa de Borrego Taco (8.5/10) Juicy and flavorful as it should be -Cochinita Pibil Taco (7.5/10) You taste bitter notes from the orange. You don't taste orange at all, but I've had better Cochinita Pibil at other places. Still very well made, this is just me being picky! Try this! read more
Clavel is hands down my favorite spot for flavorful Mexican cuisine in Baltimore. Their queso fundido dip with chorizo is the ultimate comfort food, and the gobernador quesadilla is packed with flavor that leaves me wanting more every time. The margaritas are a must, with the Santa Sandia--a spicy watermelon margarita--standing out as something truly special that I haven't found anywhere else. Clavel's warm and intimate vibe makes it perfect for date nights, and while they quote an hour-long wait, I've rarely waited more than 20-30 minutes. Service is phenomenal and there is usually street parking outside. This is a restaurant I return to again and again, and it never disappoints! read more
Okay 100% for the vibes, queso, and margs, but the tacos are pretty mid actually. The wait is SUPER long but they have some good cocktail bars nearby to wait at. The service is good, nothing special. Tbh don't think I'll be going back but fun to go with friends once! read more

4.5 stars.....this place has been talked about amongst my Baltimore friends for years and now I know why! Opens at 5pm, we were there by 5:40pm and we were already on an hour wait-list!! This community SHOWS UP for this place and it's the delicious flavors, reasonable prices and friendly wait-staff that keeps them coming back. Bustling and packed-in tight;but not deafeningly loud the energy in the restaurant is palatable. With a great happy hour 5-7pm throughout the restaurant, we started with house margs, chips and guac and queso (served with veg or chorizo). The margs tasted so fresh, real lime juice and the perfect amount of tequila! Just connect these to a main-line drip for me!! The chips and tortillas are house made and you can tell. Guac was perfectly flavored and my friends loved the queso. Tacos are street-style (two bites) dressed simply and flavored spectacularly. We basically ordered one of each taco with all being delicious with just enough complexity to elevate Clavel from just another Mexican restaurant, to a culinary experience!! I don't live in Baltimore but will be swinging into Clavel on every visit to the city..PERIOD! read more
Clavel is a mainstay. Perfect for a weeknight dinner, solo date and a great time. The service is top tier indoors and outdoor seating available. Best part - when you do have to wait, you can always go get drinks at W.C Harlan. My go to is the pork tacos with pork skins and wash it down with the Tamarindo! read more
Clavel consistently is in my top 3 restaurants in Baltimore. The service is so quick, the food is AMAZING, and drinks are delicious and well crafted. Perfect for a girls night for drinks and sharing apps but also a romantic date night dinner and drinks. It is worth the wait every time. Clavel never misses. Their food is absolutely amazing and the restaurant is beautiful. They are always hustling and bustling so the service can be slow at times but the food makes up for it. I do wish they took reservations though. Their margaritas are phenomenal and they have an extensive cocktail, mezcal and tequila list. Their queso fundido is a must get. It comes out bubbling with an overflowing bag of chips and a side of guac. I have had many of their different tacos and quesadillas but the gobernador (shrimp) and barbacoa are probably my favorite. Appreciate the various options on the curated menu. FUNDIDO CON CHORIZO: good but too heavy to eat after the third bite as expected. It would be helpful if there are pickle on the side to help kill the fat. Guac and the red sauce that came with it were good. TAMAL DE ELOTE FRESCO (Cheese Sweet Corn Tamale): very good, moist, corn flavor forward. I'd say get either the FUNDIDO or TAMAL as the cheese seems to be the same so it became ultra heavy. BARBACOA DE BORREGO (Lamb Taco): braised well, can't compare with LA and NY though.. EL LUCHADOR (Fried Cod Taco): fish was good, wish the shell was thicker with more crunch. The place is super cute with a bunch of lights indoors, and the service was good! Our server checked up on us a good amount and the food came out really quickly! I like the options they have for tacos - I wish the menu was a little bigger since they only have tacos/a few seafood tapas but for what they have - amazing! How hard is it to get a table for bigger parties? I know there's no reservations but do you just have to show up early for a better chance with a bigger group?
Very size dependent. They have a lot of big tables that seat ~8 relatively comfortably. More than that might be a challenge.
Planning a date night on Saturday... what time is best to arrive so we have a likely wait of less than an hour?
Between 4pm and 5:30pm. Any later and you start to risk a longer wait.
I went to order Clavel take out and 99 percent of their menu reads out of stock. All salads. All tacos. All burritos. But their social media says it's up and running so I'm confused...are they still offering take out?

No - they do have a Happy Hour from 5-7, but no specials related to tacos.
Tips for Saturday dining? Is there a list at the door? Can you leave & grab drinks and come back?
They use an iPad system, take your phone number, and text you when a table opens up. If you don't want to wait, get there as close as possible to opening. WC Harlan down the street is owned by them-great cocktails
