I've been to Clavel a number of times since it opened and have always had a great time and great food there. I visited last week and started off with my favorite drink, their Mezcalita. I ordered three tacos: the shrimp (a favorite of mine), barbacoa de borrego, and carne de res. As always, their tacos were excellent. For my second drink I had the Amado Nervo which I hadn't tried before. It was a bit sweet for me, but the flavors definitely blended together well. During other visits there I've gotten the queso fundido which tastes like it's straight out of Mexico City. My only complaint is that sometimes the waitstaff there can be rude and condescending. I understand that Clavel is perpetually busy and chaotic, and I'm sure that this can affect even the most experienced server, but when I have had the misfortunate of having one of these waiters or waitresses serve me I haven't completely enjoyed my time there. However, this is very hit-and-miss and most of the times I've been there have been great in terms of the staff! read more

Two words: queso fundido. WOWWW I'm not a huge cheese person but this queso was baked until the bottom was crispy and DELECTABLE. It comes with guac and refried beans and chips - we got the chorizo one and legit could've eaten two of these. We also ordered an array of tacos: - Carnitas con salsa verde - Barbacoa de Borrego - Lengua - Tinga Pollo Each and every one of them was so amazing, you can't go wrong with any of them. Clavel just opened up close to where i live so naturally i had to check it out. Now, i am not the biggest fan when it comes to Mexican cuisine so i rarely go out of my way to get it, but i do every now and then. On a Wednesday the place was bumping, we were able to snag some tables at the bar. Since they are new i guess they are adjusting to the flow, because the service was a little slow and disjointed. Disjointed to the fact that they forgot our orders so an 1hr and a half in we were like something is wrong.. They did remedy that situation by giving us a fantastic discount. Food and Drinks Food was delicious, i ordered some sandwich fantastic, a quessadila, and a taco.. I finished the sandwich and the delicious camorones taco.. phenomenal.. Drinks the margarita with a spicy edge was strong and delicious i will go there just for that alone. My other friends all enjoyed their meals.. Note:food portions are small so if you go hungry, you may leave hungry, just order the sandwich and or a ton and i think you will be fine depending on your appetite level. This is where you go to get your yummy tacos fix in Baltimore. Crazy part: our tacos came out in UNDER 5 MINUTES after ordering. Before my drink even arrived! After waiting for a table, this was super amazing. We got the chips and salsa- delicious and fresh. And several tacos. My favorite was the beef with coffee seasoning. Definitely try the little sauces on the table. They pair great with the tacos. We also went for some yummy non-alc bevs. My date's hibiscus Fresca was so delicious. I had some sort of beet root drink that was very refreshing. We went in expecting a wait at 7-ish on a Saturday night. Fortunately it was only like 40 minutes. We went there on 3/22 for my girlfriend's birthday, it was our second time there. We sit at the bar, directly behind the host, waiting for our table. An hour and a half goes by and I ask the host if we're still on the list/an estimated wait time. He says he called an hour ago. Turns out he had the wrong number. A little curious seeing as we were two feet from him, but no problem, accidents happen. We give him the correct number. We wait 30 more minutes, no call. We ended up leaving 2.5 hours after getting there. We didn't receive a call/text the entire night. Super disappointing to have to wait 2.5 hours on one's birthday, and never even be seated. read more

If any restaurants want to learn how to manage a restaurant during a pandemic, they need to look at Bar Clavel. The online ordering is seamless. They send you a text when the food is ready and then you go into the car cue. It took us about 30 seconds in this cue before a wonderful masked employee brought us our food. Did I mention the food was delicious . The tacos were so good. We ordered the Carne Asada and the pork. My daughter had the chicken burrito and did not want to share it with anyone. The salads were also yummy. I made my own margaritas, so I can't comment on their mixed drinks. That being said they were wonderful just 6 months ago when I dined in. I was informed about how deliciously bomb this place was by the owner of my job and oh my literal god she was so right! I'm from southern California and I have had some of the most tasty, authentic mexican/ South American/ Central American food from various places. But let me tell you clavel is some of the best food I've had since I moved to the east coast. My bestie and I went during the busy dinner hour and we were able to grab barstools right away. The staff was all extremely friendly and attentive. Where we sat we could see how clean and organized the kitchen and prep area were. All of the staff seem happy to be there and they checked on us frequently while we were eating. I ordered micheladas which were the best I've had since i was in California. My friend had a margarita which he said was very strong and flavorful. We both ordered quesadillas with carne de res, chicken, ect... it was all so good we couldn't save any to take home. Oh, Clavel. You are a dream. Clavel has quickly become my go-to spot to take guests when I want to impress with my "foodie" knowledge. The atmosphere is warm and walks the line between casual and not-so-casual perfectly. I feel great in jeans but I would fit in just as well in a dress and heels. When followed by a visit to WC Harlan's down the block after, Clavel makes for a perfect night to impress just about anyone. Of course the real heart of Clavel is the food. Do not skip the chips. Honestly, I could eat the chips alone and be perfectly happy with my choices. They are freshly fried (you can watch the chef make them behind the bar), crunchy, golden, and just the right amount of salty. Order them with the queso: it come with guacamole and beans. And do not skip on the sauces on the table. They're all spicy so watch out if you're faint stomached, but they're incredibly flavorful and distinct. The tacos of course are incredible as well. I'm vegetarian so I ordered both vegetarian options and the bean tostada. The corn fungus taco comes topped with a fried squash blossom which makes me feel like I'm living in an episode of Top Chef. The other veggie option is creamy and rich -- not my preferred taco filling but a standout for its category all the same. Feast on the chips but do not skip on the taco selection after. I'm still waiting to try the torta but it looks exceptional as well. Clavel is also remarkably affordable. I took a friend out to a congratulatory dinner and spent a cool $30 on dinner. I've been loving this place since it opened. I grew up in the desert southwest where Sonoran Mexican food (a different style than Clavel) is abundant. I also learned to love the other styles of cooking in Mexico when I was lucky enough to visit as a kid. Until the exceptional Tortilleria Sinaloa opened on Eastern Ave (also a must try!) the "Mexican" restaurants in the Baltimore area were disappointing, from "meh" to inedible, and far from authentic. The main problem was El Blando grocery store tortillas, plus the use of only jalapeños, maybe poblanos, instead of a complex list of chilis and spices that are hard to reproduce without traditional know-how. When Clavel opened in Remington, It was clear: not only was this the best Mexican food in the area, but maybe some of the best barbacoa tacos and proper margaritas I'd ever had -- and affordable too. Clavel has since expanded but is still excellent in every way, and one of the few places my family chooses for birthdays and out-of-town guests. I've been 30+ times now and have never had a bad meal or experience. The bar down the street, WC Harlan, also owned by Lane Harlan, is excellent too. So grateful for this owner's creativity, vision, and dedication to ambience and deliciousness. She and her partner(s) have drastically improved the eating/drinking-out landscape in Baltimore in the last ten years, bringing people joy. What a gift. read more

I really enjoyed Clavel! Now, first off - this place is still busy, despite what you may have heard. I was meeting someone on Wednesday at 5pm and there was a line already formed at the door when I arrived at 4:57. When the doors opened at 5 everyone flooded in and within minutes after the place was nearly filled! The waitress suggested Tuesday as an option for a lesser wait, if you can't make it right at 5pm. Happy hour runs 5 - 7pm M-F and offers $4 off their delicious queso or margaritas. GET BOTH! I had the spicy margarita and it was great. Not too sweet, had a solid spice level, and with the happy hour discount it was only $7. The queso is amazing. Coming out sizzling in a cast iron skillet we added the veggies (there are meat options to add as well) and a large basket of chips that could have been a whole meal in itself for me! A side of guac and black beans added to the yumminess! With all that, I then went with one taco only - a carnita. The meat had good flavor and there are pickled onions and three different salsa's on the table to enhance flavor. read more

First off, this place is kind of in the middle of sketchy nowhere, but inside is beautiful! So aesthetic with the lights. Went here for my birthday with my friends and they were super accommodating. They held a cake for us without charge, brought out plates, forks, and even provided candles. A+ for service there. Foodwise, I'd say it's average, if not a little below average. We made it in time for HH, but they're HH is supremely limited. They only offered half off of the cheese appetizer and half off of a regular margherita (still $6). We got one of each meat for the cheese appetizer (one chorizo and one shrimp). I definitely preferred the shrimp over the chorizo (always slightly too salty). But the dip was yummy, and it came with a lot of chips and some bean dip and some guac! (my fav). I ended up getting the torta ($12) with lengua, because it's always a good deal with lots of food over tacos even though many of the taco meats sounded good. But you could put the taco meats (not seafood) into the torta so win win :). The torta was yummy and def a good deal! The lengua was SO TENDER! Very yummy. I liked to add some of the pickled onions at the table and a little bit of the spicy salsas. I also got a huitlacoche taco (the mexican corn fungus) and it wasn't bad. First time trying it, so I'm not really sure what to expect. Definitely something different. Now my food was good, but the ceviches my friends ordered looked really disappointing. I LOVE ceviche, and usually they're pricey for a small amount of food. On menu, they sounded good, but execution was massively lacking. I tasted a bit of the ceviche sinaloense and it was not an authentic ceviche whatsoever. The shrimp was not good. I can't explain it, but it was just off to me. It wasn't even that tart - diluted lime juice? I don't even know. Not to mention the bowl was TINY for $16 and they gave you an inordinate amount of chips (like..they just want you to sit there and fill up on chips? ..like there was def not enough seafood). I would highly NOT recommend that ceviche. Overall the ambiance was good, and had decent service. Get the torta if you want to be full, it was also good. But otherwise, it's super expensive and really bad for HH. read more

Be warned; this place charges 20% gratuity and doesn't tell you- then gives you the option to tip 20%, 30% and 40%. The gratuity makes sense in the main restaurant which is often packed and servers deserve guaranteed money per table. But last night I went to the Garage before dinner. A surly and unhelpful woman charged us $46 for two margaritas and guacamole, then handed me a receipt that encouraged me to tip 20, 30 and 40% on top of that. She did not mention the gratuity and I tipped on top. When I pointed out that the charge was high, she shrugged her shoulders. I worked as a bartender for years and am a generous tipper but a $21 tip for two margaritas is too much. Hey Clavel- how about paying your employees more rather than asking customers to tip upwards of 60%? If you're encouraging customers to give a 40% tip on top of a 20% gratuity without telling them then you're not paying enough. Pay your servers more and be more transparent about prices. Don't require gratuity in your Garage where there is literally no service. read more

Great find courtesy of yelp! We really enjoyed our brunch here. Huevos rancheros were tasty with fresh salsa and creamy frijoles with just a little kick. My daughter's quesadilla was one of the best I've ever had. Even the drip coffee was special--a single origin I asked for a refill on. Prices seemed low relative to quality. For 3 people and a toddler it was around $50 including tip though we did not order booze. Will be back on our next trip to Baltimore. read more

I absolutely loved Clavel! The inside has great classic Spanish decor, bar seating and tables and was very lively for happy hour on a week day. If you're looking to eat a meal, be prepared to wait if you're going on a weekend night. We got there right at opening for happy hour and it was packed within 20 minutes! The happy hour prices are very reasonable. The margaritas were fantastic. We didn't get dinner but I would highly recommend the queso- it was amazing! Walking into this place in the summer I felt just walked in from the beach. There is a great south/Central American ambiance - it may have helped that I was wearing swim trunks. The atun con piña appetizer was one of the best I've had. Chunks of raw tuna served with avocado and some other garnishments over pineapple and a crispy round taco shell. After growing up in California and moving to the Mid Atlantic from Arizona, I am always in search of solid Mexican food. Clavel takes the cake (or should I say taco?). Their entire drink menu is fantastic, but I'm partial to the margaritas (don't miss out on the tres chiles shrub for $1 more of you like heat). The cochinita pibil tacos will change your life. I eat here more than I'd like to admit, probably once a week, and they never disappoint. The only menu item I have ever been disappointed by was the guacamole, though tasty, I am not sure it's worth $8 and the size is usually inconsistent. Get there early if you want to snag a seat, otherwise you could end up waiting awhile for a table. If you do have to wait, they also own a little bar around the corner (WC Harlan) that is a sweet place to grab a pre-dinner drink. A great place to dine with a group or even just by yourself as they have varied seating. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Bmore, look no further... If you like shredded iceberg and cheddar cheese on your tacos, bless your heart, Taco Bell might be a better bet. read more

Mexican done right. Clavel goes above and beyond expectations on what a restaurant can do to provide the perfect flavors to bring you a whole new experience. Upon walking in the front door, you are greeted by the host. 30-40 min wait... not too shabby. We wait it out down the road to get the text our table is ready. Coming back we are shown our table. Immediately order guac and queso. Then the salom crudo with 2 orders of empanadas to suffice our initial hunger. Boy was that a treat. The ceviche was so fresh and melted in your mouth. High-quality tacos with varying tastes( carnivore, omnivore, and vegetarian varieties). Having ordered the Barbacoa de Borrego and Tinga de Pollo I was beyond satisfied. Couldn't forget the Tres Leches cake to top it off. If I could, I would have wanted to be carted out I was feeling so warm and full after the food. While decently loud, the dining room was a perfect setting for a date or just a fun get-together place with a friend or 4 whilst eating unctuous food letting the umami flow! This place was amazing! I had thee best margarita of my life. I tried 4 tacos(shrimp, carnitas, lamb, and carne de res). More than 2-3 tacos is probably too much food for an average person especially if you're getting apps which we did, but I wanted to try as much of the menu as possible. I ended up taking the carne taco to go and it held up well overnight in the fridge, no mushy mess in the morning. My favorite taco was the shrimp. The cheese on the bottom of the tortilla made the taco extra juicy and you get that drippy cheese action when you bite into it. A close second favorite was the lamb, it was equally juicy and flavorful as the shrimp, but I'm more of a seafood person. The carnitas despite being cooked in its own fat was kind of dry, but I appreciate the crackling topping for the texture. The carne de res meat had been beautifully marinated and I could've just eaten the meat out of the taco honestly. They provide salsas on the table which are good by themselves or added on the tacos. We also tried the veggie queso which comes sizzling in a skillet to the table with a side of guac and bean dip. I might've liked the bean dip as much as the queso and would probably get a side of it in addition to or in place of queso next time. I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who eats food lol, but get there early before opening to guarantee you get a table or come prepared to wait as they don't take reservations. read more

Clavel is one of my favorite spots. The food and drinks are amazing. Service is personable and quick. If you want to go during the weekend try to arrive before the restaurant opens because the wait will be long for a table. Weekdays, are not too bad depending on the time. If you are a late owl, trying going around 10-11pm, but be aware that the kitchen closed at midnight, but the bar is open until 1pm. The food is served hot and is very authentic. I'm from California and this place makes me feel like I'm back home. It's a very cozy resturant with a diverse population. It's great for date night, a friends dinner, or the spot to go to before hitting the nightlife locations. I recommend starting out with the queso fundido as an appetizer if you're a cheese eater. There is also a veggie option for the queso fundido. If you're a meat eater try the lengua (tongue) tacos, carnitas, or carne red. Be adventurous and try all of them! You can't go wrong. Vegan? There options on the menu as well. A must try, must go to place in Baltimore. The four stars is for the wait and not having the ability rsvp tables. :( read more

Arrived at Clavel at about 4:45 on a Saturday evening, and there was already a line accumulating outside of the restaurant. Needless to say, we were going in with high expectations.  We were a large party of 7, but had no trouble being seated as we were the third party in line. We asked to be seated in the expanded room of the restaurant, rather than the main dining room (for noise purposes) and were easily accommodated.  Throughout the night, our group ordered 6 flights of Mezcal and nearly every cocktail on the menu. The mezcal flights were delicious, and the cocktails followed suit. There seemed to be a discrepancy in the strength of the drinks -- the cabra sagrada was remarkably strong and rum-forward, whereas the comandanta ramona was much more vegetal, and tasted like (very delicious!) beet juice.  We went heavy on appetizers, ordering the Esquite, the Queso Fundido with chorizo, the Molido de Mayacoba. For as much hype as the Queso Fundido gets, we actually found it to be the least appealing of the appetizers. The esquite was wonderfully creamy, and delivered a much fresher, more exciting flavor than the queso. The Molido de Mayacoba was very different, and was probably my favorite bite of the evening. All appetizers were well paired with the house hot sauces that are on the table.  We ordered two ceviches -- the Aguachile and the Atun con Pina. Both were phenomenal, but the Atun truly stood out and had a very complex flavor, rather than just being acid-forward. By the time mains came around, we were sadly almost full, but still put in orders of the Calabaza Pipian, and a few of the different tacos. The pumpkin soup was wonderfully smooth and well-spiced, and the tacos, to nobody's surprise, were delicious. One person ordered a steak torta, which was the most drunk-food, sloppy-joe esque item, in the best way. It was less delicate than a taco, but fully delivered on the developed flavors. We ordered one lamb tostado, which was tasty, but not worth the upcharge as compared to its taco counterpart.  Despite our being very full, we did order the Tres Leches, which was very tasty. However, it did not stand out among the strength of all of our appetizers and mains, so we weren't sure if we would over-stuff ourselves for the dessert tasting.  All-in-all, Clavel absolutely lived up to the hype. We were all relatively pleased with the appetizer-heavy decision making, and I can't wait to go back for a round 2. read more

It took me forever to get here even though I live fairly close. After months of: "You should try Clavel, I think you'd like it." "OMG yes, I've heard so many wonderful things about it. I can't wait to go!" I finally made a plan to come here while sitting in a completely different restaurant stuffing my face and guzzling cocktails. How fat is that? Eating while making plans for what I will be eating in three weeks. Smh. No shame though. I make so of my best decisions while eating. Anyway . . . No lie it took me a good 20 (maybe even 30) minutes to decide on which mezcal to try. I'm not a connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, but it seemed like a good selection. I decided on El Buho, Mayalen Wild, and Siete Misterios. Really enjoyed all three, but that last was true to its name. While the other two were distinctly earthy and smoky respectively, the Siete Misterios was a complete mystery, tasting both unique and familiar. I started with the Ceviche Sinaloense which was a expected and welcomed flavor. It tastes like the beach on a sunny summer day in Miami; so refreshing. I had (almost) ALL the tacos: Cochinita, Chambarete, Barbacoa, Goat Barbacoa, y Lengua. Cochinita pibil and lengua were my favorite; seasoned to perfections and to die for! People tend to feel some kind of way about food that may or may not be tasting them back, but trust me you want to eat the lengua! I finished up with the tres leches cake. A friend suggested we try Clavel and I'm glad we did. We we arrived at 9pm, the place was packed. We were told we would have a 20 minute wait. Scanning the place, we found a seat at the bar and ordered margaritas. Within minutes, we were served our margaritas and were informed our table was ready. If it was 20 minutes, I didn't seem like it. This was a good sign. At our table, we were greeted by our server who brought us chip and salsa while we looked at the menu. The tortillas was were warm and had a density that made me realize the thin totrtillas I've been eating at other restaurants are sub par. I started with the ceviche dish. Made with shrimp and rockfish, it had a great play of textures. After my questions. The waiter suggested I get get a taco and a quesadilla. For the quesadillas, you can select any taco filling. My main course was barbocoa quesadilla, a shrimp quesadilla and a barbocoa taco. The first and last time I had barbocoa was in San Antonio and I was eager to have it again. At Clavel, it was just as delicious. The taco barbocoa was good. The meat tender. The barbocoa quesadilla made me dance in my seat. The meat with a bit of cheese and the crispy texture of the quesadilla (La Gobrandor) was fantastic and I liked it so much I ordered another. I came here after work with my friend. They open at 5pm but by 4:50pm, there is already a line forming. The inside is fairly small but nicely decorated. They have an open kitchen, which is great. This will allow you to see your food being prepared. I ordered shrimp tacos-blah. The shrimp were not seasoned. I also ordered the spicy margarita- jackpot! So yummy! The staff was really friendly. Second night in Baltimore second five start review. We arrived at 4 to ensure we got in. What a treat. We started with drinks I got the mezcalita it was really good. My second drink was El Chocol and was even better. For the food we had two ceviche shrimp and tuna. Generally I'm a tuna person but the shrimp sinaloense was so good. We got a three tacos pork, lamb and beef tongue. I preferred the tongue but the wife was unable to get past the idea of tongue. The queso was really good my daughter suggested veggies instead of sausage in the dip. It was a great choice she made onions and chili's made it a little lighter. On the app was a small little side of the best beans I've ever had and really added to the overall flavor of the app. Lastly I closed out the meal with a flight of Solot. This used to be our go to, favorite spot but just had the worst dining experience ever there. My pregnant wife, 2 family members and myself waited over two hours. We were told an hour and half at first. We went to WC harlen for a drink then came back up for drinks at the side restaurant. We waited over two hours and were never sat. We watched people come in and put their names down and sat before us. They were friends of the hostess or server and watched them hug them while they sat them before us. Those customers even gave us dirty looks for questioning it. When we questioned the manager they gave every excuse possible. Even if we got a table it would be another hour for food for how over booked they made themselves. At some point you need to be honest with your customers and say you won't get a table. We came at 6:30 and left at 9 with no food. They had no problem taking money for our drinks while we wait and offer no compensation on the drinks for their poorly run establishment.
