Went there for the first time for lunch last Friday. Great googie design, reminiscent of the '60s HoJos. You can eat at the counter, at booths, or outside. I was leaving Santa Monica and decided to visit an old school diner as Denny's is always packed. We were seated immediately and the waiter kept the coffee filled. I appreciate diners and breakfast joints that get this part of the service right of keeping the coffee filled. I think they use Farmer Brother's coffee as most restaurants in CA use. My wife has the chilaquiles which was spicy, but my French toast breakfast with eggs and bacon was good. I would visit if back in town. The parking situation can get tight since it is next to a church and very narrow. Not good. I am flying out of LAX and this place isn't far from my hotel. Other yelp reviews led me here. I ordered the James dean omelette which had mushrooms, spinach and onions. The omelette had ZERO flavor and I had to send it back because it was undercooked! I never had salt or pepper to food but I had to add both just to eat it. The home potatoes were raw and cold and the chef threw a hand full of raw bell peppers on top. The best tasting part of the meal was the ape cinnamon jelly and that came in little packets! I've lived in Hawthorne and surrounding areas all of my life and today was the first time I ever had Chips. It was my boyfriends idea so we called in our order for pick up and the person who answered the phone is the reason I'm giving this place a few more stars than I normally would. He was SOO nice and answered the phone in a professional manner, listened to my order and actually took the time to repeat it back. I usually feel rushed when I order carry out from other places so I definitely read this as a good sign. When my boyfriend picked up up the food he commented about the very friendly service he received from the guy managing the front cashier and answering the busy phone. I pretty much assumed it was the same person because it's rare that my boyfriend notices or comments on the service we get at restaurants. Unfortunately, I didn't get his name but his service was amazing! As for the food, I ordered a turkey burger with cheese and onion rings on the side which were great! We walked to Chips from our house and it's about a 6 block walk and when I got home the onion rings were still hot and crunchy! My boyfriend ordered the green salsa chilaquiles with scrambled eggs and retried beans, which started out great .. but slowly he stopped eating them. Awesome little mom and pop diner. Mostly American, 1950's style, very Denny's-ish (but just better) and they do have some traditional Hispanic breakfasts as well. They do have a full breakfast, lunch, dinner menu but does anyone really come to these places for anything but breakfast?? I didn't think so! I've been here twice (for breakfast both times, how'd you guess??) and the food is excellent and prices are very reasonable...the staff are cool too, that's always a plus when you get served by someone who actually cares about their job! This was a place I wanted to be ok. I should have looked at reviews first. I ordered the patty melt and my husband ordered the cold chicken sandwich. The grease on my sandwich was so bad I couldn't eat the bread. The chicken was hot and smelled and tasted bad and made my husband feel sick. Manager said it was the cheese and insisted we were wrong. The fries were under cooked. I ordered onion rings but got fries by mistake returned then got the onion rings. Again the manager was very rude. He took back our meal then wanted to charge for our fries that were bad. Our waitress was nice but clueless. The shakes were ok. Now writing this at emergency room. The manger was so mad that we were telling him it was the chicken he throw us out! Telling us to leave now! Chips management and meal was so disappointing. read more

Horrible. Was looking for a good local diner... this WASN'T it! Ordered the NY Steak, I truly wasn't expecting much for under $10. But I wasn't expecting a gray cold piece of meat. It was supposed to be cooked medium rare... this wasn't even rare, it was raw, cold and purple inside. I mean, come on... the thing was probably less than a 1/4 inch thick, how the hell do you under cook it?? The bland, boiled, unseasoned vegetables it came with were cold. The waiter took the steak back before I could even say anything. They re-cooked the same steak and sent it back, now over cooked with the same cold vegetables! The silverware was nasty, steak knife had a broken wooden handle that was falling off. Tip off should have been that the place was dead empty at dinner time... this should have been a clue. Breakfast... Yes I will at Chip's! The diner is clean and very bright. Classic in style like stepping back in time. And the food.. well I ordered the T-Bone and eggs... WOW is what I said they didn't fry the steak they grilled it and it had that wonderful grilled flavor. I went to Chip's Classic 1950's Diner. The owner of the restaurant was Filemon (File R.I.P) and our chef was named Francisco. Restaurants that used to be owned were "El Zacatecas" and "Casa Gamino" Their restaurant specializes in serving Breakfast all day long, hamburgers, and sandwiches, with a vibe of the 1950's. The entree I ordered was a Dinner salad, a bacon cheese burger, french fries, and a side of strawberry lemonade. The bacon burger had perfectly crisp bacon and a perfect sized bruger to fill you up, with a good quantity side of french fries depending on how much you prefer to eat. The only part of my meal I was not as pleased with was the strawberry lemonade, I only do not recommend if you don't like pulp, but everything else was better than I had imagined. I'm also happy that when I asked to take off specific condiments they remembered to keep the onions, pickles, and tomatoes off the burger. For my companion, she ordered chocolate-chip pancakes, with a side of extra crispy bacon, and a glass of milk. She described her meal as the pancakes being fluffy not too thin for her liking, just right. She had also asked the waitress to bring her a side of extra crispy bacon and brought her back exactly what she asked for. She also liked that the pancakes had a perfect quantity of chocolate chips, and wasn't to sweet for her. Once we had told the lady we were interviewing her, I felt like she tried her best to do a good job and gave us a better experience. I loved the ambiance of the place because you don't regularly find a place that's 50's themed, they achieved their goal by making the booths more antique as well as the bar, and throughout the whole time they played 50's music while we ate. It was nice to look around at all the old pictures of antique cars and famous people, even the gumball machine was fit to match the diner. Over all, the service was great, the waitress was kind and the place looked friendly, the restaurant wasn't busy, and it was sort of empty and we weren't rushed at all our meal came quickly and we were there for a while enjoying the moment like if the restaurant was opened especially for us. I think more people should come to Chip's because the food was great, over all everything was great and it wasn't loud, it was more relaxing, like you could just have more fun, I give it 5 stars total, and I think I'll be coming again real soon. read more

Long time perviewer, 1st time patron. Surprised at the cleanliness, impressed with the crisp bacon, loved the eggs. Tasty coffee. Pancakes are a mere standard, no frills and same with the syrup. Wife's omlette looked great! She had The Nature, but she woulda preferred a different cheese (feta maybe) bc she just isn't a jack friend. I call that a Problem of the Jewish Princess, but others may call that an infringment on their freedom of choice. Damage was a mere 20 bucks, and with the pleasant service, and consistent java refills you are getting a worthy experience. Also, noted that upon second visit the food was reinforced. This time I had the waffle, which was amazing. Yes amazing one of the better waffles I've had in a long time. But, there was a serious issue because the wife ordered that Nature omelette again (remember it has no meat) but instead got the omelette chock-full of meat. I tried this place for the first time on Mother's Day. Good thing we went before the crowd got there. It took them forever to take our order. I can only imagine how much longer they would've taken. I ordered the steak and eggs breakfast. I asked for over easy eggs and we'll done steak. The eggs were well cooked and the fatty steak (more fat than meat) was well done. The coffee creamer they gave me had pink juice spilled all over it. The containers were white. It was VERY noticeable. Yet, they still served it to me that way. My husband ordered the tuna melt. The tuna came straight from the can to the burnt toast and was named "tuna melt." My daughter ordered chorizo and eggs with rice and beans. The only good thing on her plate was the chorizo and eggs. We were all very disappointed. The restaurant itself is cute. Very retro. That's what caught our eyes. Sadly to service is horrible and the food quality was bad. read more

I was a customer for years but somehow the service has gone really bad to begin with the manager has no knowledge of how to run a restaurant and the food especially the Menuno is really good but unfortunately for $25.00 dollars that you pay you get 1 serving instead of two servings no meat whatsoever I understand the portion control that restaurants have but this time was just ridiculous my husband and I work in the restaurant busses and I managed a kitchen and I will never allow this type of situation to happen people should get what they paid for. and when you go there to show them the manager calls one of the cooks and shows him the cups and he said that he served the cups full of meat and tried to say that I was lying when I was not even asking the for anything free it's something that I already paid for unfortunately this is not the first time they always get my simple order wrong 2 menudos. Chips Restaurant is a classic 1950's sit down restaurant. My first experience there was a very good one. The chef's name is Francisco and my waiter's name is Eva. Eva explained to me how they had another restaurant called Casa Gavino but closed. This 1950's restaurant specializes in breakfast which is the reason they serve breakfast all day and not just in the mornings. I came in the evening but when I heard that they specialized in breakfast I chose to eat a breakfast related entre. My exact order was a cup of milk, two chocolate chip pancakes, and crispy bacon. When my order had arrived and I started to eat it I could really taste the chocolate chips and I really like the texture of the pancakes and how they were fluffy and not hard or to thick. This entre does achieve its purpose since each component of my order was correct. My bacon was crispy just how I asked it and my pancakes had chocolate chips. I took my cousin with me to try out this restaurant and she ordered a bacon burger with no onion, pickles, or tomato, she also ordered a pink lemonade, french fries and a dinner salad. According to her, her burger was perfect, they left out the tomatoes, onions and pickles. Her only complaint was with the strawberry lemonade because it had pulp but that is a personal preference and not something that would bother all people. The service was very fast but not rushed at all, Eva was very sweet and helped us while ordering. She gave us plenty of time to look at our menus and order without feeling rushed or abandoned without service. I liked how Eva knew the menu very well and could explain the entres. The ambiance is very chill and has a very 1950's vibe. It was very empty since it was a week day but it has a very calming vibe. I liked how the music playing wasn't loud and was very vintage which went perfect with the 1950's diner theme.
