I got the short rib enchiladas. It was so disappointing that I didn't even complain to anyone at the restaurant. Two of us ordered them. And two of us hated them. Hate. The short rib was cooked well then ruined by all the dressings and things. The enchiladas were covered in a gross sauce and cheese that looked and tasted like a terrible quality Colby Jack. The sauce wasn't a green or red it was orange. I'm daring so I went for it. This is an example of doing too much but not enough. The people giving great reviews for the short rib enchiladas must be cousins of the owners. I'm super perturbed. Six of us at the table...no alcohol was ordered. Only one person liked her meal. And the black beans are lard laced so the folks who don't want pork and beans when they've ordered black beans should steer clear. The bill was high the experience was low. It's a no for me. Days later and I'm going to Javier's to get my lobster enchiladas so I can try to erase the memory of the short rib enchilada experiment at this spot. It's a shame because the restaurant is cute. My cousin was visiting from Florida, so we came here for dinner. Her headquarters for work is in El Segundo, which worked out perfectly! It turned into such a sweet, memorable night. Since it's only minutes from my daughter's office, she was able to join us too. My cousin is a March baby, but we still had to celebrate her birthday! This time, we decided to sit on the patio, and I'm so glad we did. I knew we were going to be deep in conversation, so I asked if we could have one of their nicest, quieter tables and they delivered. It was lovely, with a nice breeze and much more peaceful than sitting inside. The food was to me satisfying. I ordered the two-item combo (beef hard shell taco + chicken enchilada) with rice and beans, so satisfying. They also start you off with complimentary chips, salsa, and beans, which were delicious. My daughter's camarones had HUGE shrimp, and my cousin loved her chicken and asada tacos. Drinks were just as yummy; a lemon drop for me and a pineapple margarita for her. We mentioned it was my cousin's birthday, and the staff kindly helped us celebrate with a belated cake, which was such a nice touch. Caló is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants down here in the South Bay. It's definitely a "treat yourself" kind of restaurant though, as it's pricier/more upscale compared to your typical Mexican restaurants. They're definitely aiming for fancy rather than homey. That being said, the vibes are excellent, with Mexican music playing over the speakers and warm mood lighting; the servers are exceptionally friendly and attentive; and the flavors of the food are nice and bold. The beans here are like crack, I could *not* stop eating them. And the short rib enchiladas were equally amazing, I wish I had more! Desserts are for some reason not listed on the menu, but when my family and I went for my mom's birthday, there was a choice between: churros, flan, fried ice cream, and tres leches. We chose the tres leches, which was everything I could've hoped for in this dessert, and we inhaled it before I remembered to even get a picture! This used to be one of my favorite places to go. I'm not sure if there's new staff or management but the service and food was subpar. To start the host was not friendly whatsoever.Our wait time kept getting shifted and ended up waiting for about an hour. They sat us down and didnt bother to sweep under our table that had food all over. I had to ask for them to sweep. Our waitress was trying to be nice but it felt like she didn't want us there. I had the short rib enchiladas that were not as great as people had reviewed. In the past we had a manager apologize & gave us a gift card since the kitchen took so long for our food. Calo Kitchen in El Segundo is one of our absolute favorites and this team luncheon visit reminded me exactly why. The good energy started early. A couple of my coworkers had just been at the Beyonce concert and the vibes were high walking in. I went with my go-to, the fajitas, and they hit the way they always do. Others at the table had burritos and the shrimp enchiladas and everyone left happy. The general manager was on the floor and personally came over to greet us. She even remembered me from when my book first came out, and that kind of genuine hospitality is what keeps people coming back. The taste was great, there were adequate amounts of sweet, tangy and the grilled chicken added a nice fire roasted effect. Haven't been here in a while and it was definitely just as good as I remembered. Chips, salsa and warm bean dip will always be a winner! Service was spectacular from Crystal. She really was a gem and extremely helpful and attentive. Tried the Beef queso tacos (birria) appetizer and they were quite tasty. Comes with 5-MINI tacos for $28. Based on the taste, I would definitely get them again. Price point wise...I don't think it was worth it. Also decided to share the Smokey Ceasar salad (with ribeye on top.) We were not pleased with this. It was just all wrong. The salad was flimsy and so was the steak. It looked good and based on the description, I thought that it would be full of flavor. It was not! Steak was also kinda rubbery and looked low quality. No one in the party finished it. This also was not cheap, so it was disappointing not to be able to finish it. As far as cocktails go, they don't miss here. The blackberry margaritas are the best I've had. Although it appears that the prices may have gone up slightly since my last visit, the food & drinks are overall good. I'll just stay away from the salads. Was hoping we'd be leaving a 5-star review and had really looked forward to a first-time meal at Calo. We arrived for our reservation, but it seemed the staff wasn't quite ready to start the day, as some were still arriving and clocking in. The hostess asked what we were celebrating, and when I responded, there was no acknowledgment or response instead simply a point toward our chairs. We ordered drinks and appetizers, which were accompanied by sharing plates that had not been properly washed, with leftover beans and rice still on the bottom. Throughout the meal, our party waited for our one small bowl of chips to be refilled, while smaller tables nearby had multiple bowls left on theirs. We ordered a chicken salad that arrived without chicken, and when the bill came, we were charged for two salads -- one with chicken and one without. We also asked for to-go boxes but were not given the lids to go with them. Our waiter was apologetic, but unfortunately not very attentive, and there seemed to be little effort made to correct what had become an awkward experience. This place is always busy! If you can score a seat, grab it, you won't regret it! It took us almost three years to dine here again although we have tried to multiple times! We knew we liked dining here from the first visit. We should have planned ahead to dine here. You can make a reservation using the Yelp App. There's also a Waitlist option available when busy. Parking is in a free lot surrounded by other businesses, mainly eateries. It can be difficult to find a space during optimal dining hours. For finding parking and a table, it's probably best to come during off times. This last visit things aligned and we dined. We checked in with the hostess and she attempted to seat us outside without asking our preference, so at that point, we then requested a table inside. The interior is stylish & inviting. After being seated, chips, salsa, and a black bean dip were brought to us. These are the best chips! They're thin and have a great texture. I would return for this round of complimentary starters! TIP: If you want spicier salsa, you can order some Habanero Salsa. I think there's a slight cost for it. Our first visit was in 2022 and we had the Seafood Trio, Pork and Pineapple Tacos and ended with the Fried Ice Cream. Fast forward to 2025, we got Chile Verde and Calo Combination with Three Items: Carnitas Chile Relleno, Pork Tamale, & Crispy Beef Taco with Esquites. All the food was done well and tasted delicious! Their tortillas are freshly made. On both visits we ordered the Fried Ice Cream, but I think the first one we had was better than the last one. We were in the area and decided to check out Calo Kitchen since they had an outdoor patio (had fake grass) for our dogs. My dog turned 12 and we let the staff know that we're celebrating a birthday lol. We ordered Nachos, Burrito, and Smokey Caesar with chicken to share.
