Awesome! I lived here for over 20 years and first time here. French toast w eggs and bacon (3 stooges), chilaquiles and had to try the menudo . French toast had a nice crisp and w butter, almost didn't need syrup. I always want it with eggs and bacon and I'm glad they think so too. Chilaquiles plate was clean and menudo was beyond expectations. It had a hammock (?) Bone with tendon that I cleaned off. Lots of tripe and hominy. They didn't skimp on toppings, 3 big lime wedges, oregano, onions so sweet, cilantro and red pepper. I put all of them in and it's a melody of textured and flavors (and I'm not even spanish). Service so friendly and servers were happy and talking to everyone. Chips is a cute little 50s-style diner serving your typical diner food. I ordered The Three Stooges (French toast, 3 eggs, and a turkey sausage patty), and unfortunately it just didn't hit. The turkey sausage had a weird aftertaste, the French toast was a little tough, and the eggs were... well, just eggs. The prices are pretty reasonable, but I have to mention the bottled water. They charge $6.50 for a Kirkland bottled water, which is wild. Service was great. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. read more

The perfect place for a brunch or lunch if you're in the neighborhood, or coming from the church across the street. They have specials too like pozole on weekends. I opted for the 2-egg breakfast because it's a good measure of a diner. Everything in the breakfast was simple, and perfect. Crispy hashbrowns and bacon, over-medium eggs, and I swapped out the toast for a fluffy biscuit with creamy sausage gravy. My husband's omelet was equally done right, and they kept the coffee coming. I say excellent service because they even thought to bring over a plastic spoon for my son, who's only 6 months and starting solids. They made his plain scrambled egg well-cooked for him too. We came across Chips while on vacation, and this mom-and-pop restaurant was fabulous! It has an old-school vibe and the friendliest staff ever they took such great care of us. We came for breakfast and absolutely conquered it! I ordered the chilaquiles and eggs with red sauce, and it was to die for one of the best I've ever had. Everything was made to perfection. My fiancé ordered the soup of the day and a BLC (no tomato, replaced with cheese) with extra bacon. BOMB.com! Again...made perfectly. Our friends were with us too one ordered a grilled cheese and said it hit the spot, and the other ordered carne asada and eggs and cleared her entire plate! What a gem!! Loved everything about our breakfast here! The food was awesome. Their gravy for their biscuits and gravy was a different flavor than the usual. It wasn't too rich, but it was flavorful and the biscuit was nice and fluffy. The home potatoes were original and fresh and the soft scrambled eggs were done to perfection. The waffles were nice and crispy on the outside and really chewing on the inside almost like a mochi waffle- so good. I couldn't resist the peach waffles as I've never heard of that before and the combination between the canned peaches and the waffles were phenomenal. The ambience, the setting the decor was beautifully done. I don't know if it was original, but it sure looked nostalgic. The place was clean and neat. Finally, the service was completely on point. You could tell our server had many years of experience. He handled every single person in the breakfast crowd plus the cash register all by himself. He came through and checked on us at least four times during our breakfast. Hands-down, I would recommend chips and I hope to get back there again real soon. Old school since 1957. This is one of those googie architecture buildings that has survived all these decades in an ever changing demolish and build new climate. I stepped in around 6pm and there was only one family enjoying dinner which kind of made me want to retreat and go eat elsewhere. Oh my, why haven't been here before. My son ordered the patty melt and a chocolate shake first off with the chocolate shake They use old fashioned ice cream. It's either Carnation or Thrifty ice cream and if you like your shakes on the thick side you don't have to ask. They do it. They also leave an extra chunk of ice cream at the very bottom of the metal container. We also ordered pozole and Menudo soup which you can compare to with your mother or grandma very little fat really good. Has a little spice to it but you could spice it up more. Highly recommend this place service is awesome. They're always filling up your cup of coffee or water or whatever else you have and they're coming by asking. Ambience is definitely old school from the late '50s '60s counters boost and everything else extremely clean. Even the bathroom definitely coming back. I been coming here since 1995!! I decided to live a little and try something new. I tried the Humphrey bogart eggs Benedict over and English muffin with holiday sauce and fruit. It was a very pleasant and welcomed surprise!! Service is always great. Waitresses, bus boys are always very friendly and helpful. So, I always tip over 20%. There are a lot of great diners in LA and this is definitely one of them. It's the classic 50s style diner with a huge menu, filled with all the classics that you would expect. They have a lot of different seating options available both counter and booth. Our server was really polite and also very attentive. It was really busy when we arrived for a 10:30 AM Saturday brunch but we only had to wait a few few minutes to be seated. They have a medium sized free parking lot attached to the side but it was full when we arrived so we had to do free street parking a block away near the church. As always, I started with a cup of coffee and it's that true strong diner coffee that I love. For my meal today I chose the Chicken Fried Steak and it really hit the spot. Their gravy is not watery and it was a good sized portion. The pricing is also fair for all the items, so it really would be good for families or large groups. Overall a really delicious diner in the South Bay. I'm not in this area often, but I certainly would stop in again next time I am down that way, and would recommend to anyone else that's in the area. read more

This is a mainstay for the City of Hawthorne, we were told by a lovely couple sitting across from us. The food is wanting. The bean and barley soup was ok but my wife's open face turkey sandwich was bland and a bit cold. My omelette was way overcooked so I sent it back and did not request another one because we were in a hurry. I did eat the two small pieces of avocado and the little bowl of fruit with only watermelon and cantaloupe pieces and no berries, that came with the omelette. We got charged $2.50 for the avocado and $2.50 for the fruit!! Not very nice acting like a tourist trap in such an otherwise friendly city!? read more

I've been coming to Chips for years and always been very happy with everything...imagine my surprise today when suddenly the pancakes I always order are half cooked...the bacon, which by the way I always remind them I like crispy, was also half cooked and so rubbery i could barely bite into it... Young waiter walked right past me 3 times WITH COFFEE POT IN HAND and totally ignored me and my empty cup..I asked if there had been a recent ownership change and was told yes there had...puzzling because all the employees were still the same...probably not the cook though since no experienced cook would serve up a pancake that was actually still all white on top, as well as bacon that literally wiggled itself off the plate. Makes no sense...a change that radically negative so quickly. Really sad...gonna miss this place. read more

Good breakfast and brunch. I had the omelet with sausage, cheese, and tomatoes, hash browns, and subbed the pancakes for the toast. Everything tasted great. The vanilla cappuccino was very yummy. The waitress was busy, she seemed to be the only one, but she was very nice and helpful and apologized for the wait. We didn't really mind, though.
