I came in on Friday 07/31. While the food was really really delicious, I hate to say the service was totally not. Not to mention, I was rushed off to finish my food. Given the check while I still mid chewing and the waiter attend to me about 3 times, seated me, took my order, and drop the check. I was the only table there for Christ sake! I came due to highly recommendation from a good friend of mine. Now I don't think I'll be back. Message to owner, please check your waiters' hygiene. This is the second boring, terrible meal from this place over the last 6 months. I ordered online and was suppose to get two different types of chicken but the order was wrong. Only one tasteless lemon chicken dish. The orange beef was cold and hard like it had been in a refrigerator overnight and barely warmed. The sauces were boring and tasteless. The shrimp dish was fresh but again lacked any distinct flavors. This place needs a new chef and quality control. $85 of disappointment. read more

It pains me to give this place a two-star review because I believe the quality of the food at Chinatown is generally pretty good. However, the last time we visited will literally be the last time we visit. This was the third time they've run out of dim sum without notifying their customers, and that's only the times I know about. (In other words, I'm not sure if this is a constant issue.) Because Chinatown is one of the few places in Austin for dim sum and we're dim-sum addicts, we stuck with it. No more. We went in last Saturday at about 1:30 and noticed a couple of the waiters scraping the contents of the nearby dim sum cart into styrofoam containers. We asked what was going on and they said there was a wedding there that evening and they needed all the dumplings, etc. for the wedding. Had my husband not asked if there would be any dim sum available for the diners there, we wouldn't have got any. As it was, all we could order were two types of dumplings, the only ones left on that cart. We noticed another diner getting really irate, questioning loudly as he stormed out if there was only one waiter serving that day. There were actually several waitstaff wandering around, however none were serving dim sum. Many were huddled in the back near the kitchen, doing what, we don't know. When we finally had enough and asked for the bill, the waitress screwed up and charged us for another table's bill. She lamely noted that sometimes people make mistakes (really, hadn't noticed) and hovered over me as I signed the new bill, evidently curious about what kind of a tip I was going to leave. The manager, to his credit, did come over and apologize profusely for the lousy service. The only advice I would offer, if they run out or need all the dim sum for a special event, is to have his waitstaff inform diners BEFORE they sit down. How hard is that, really? I'm sorry, Chinatown, but you've lost two very loyal customers. read more

Went to dim sum today and it was really yummy. I am very satisfied. I had: pork bao, shrimp and leek shumai, chicken and basil dumpling, and lotus sticky rice. The sticky rice could have been a bit more flavorful, but I added a touch of soy sauce and chili oil and it was good. The pork bao was warm, soft, light, w/ a good filling, and quite delicious. The shumai and dumplings were good, too. The coconut puff pastry dessert was Freaking Awesome. As was the coconut soft bun. The sesame balls are always good. Only problem, they don't have as much of a selection that I was used to at Fortune (closed) and dim sum places in San Fran. I will def come back. read more

Very overpriced for what it is. We just got the General Tso's chicken. 1. For $16 an entree I thought it would be big enough to split. It was barely enough food for one person. My husband and I made the mistake of sharing it (we usually share at Chinese restaurants because of how large the entree sizes are). We are both still hungry. 2. That sauce was disgusting. General Tso's chicken should have some heat to it. This was just thickened soy sauce. Super salty. No heat. No flavor other than soy sauce. 3. It was somehow cold... not sure how as there was no one there when I came to pick it up, but somehow it was cold when we got it home. We live just down the road too so it wasnt a long drive. We had a very bad experience here a few weeks ago!! We ordered some food and was told what time it would be ready. I arrived a few minutes early and called to let them know that I was there, and was told that they would bring it out when it was ready. After waiting patiently in my car on a very cold night for another twenty five minutes (!) I finally called.... When I did, the young man that answered sounded surprised and asked if I had called earlier, then said that he would bring the order right out. When he brought it to my car, I asked if it had just been sitting inside for the past half hour or so, but he told me that it was "hot and fresh", then apologized and asked if he could get me something". When I asked, he said that he could bring me a free soda or "some extra fortune cookies". When I got home the food was (predictably cold), so I called the restaurant and spoke with an owner or manager (a woman this time) who apologized and told me thatchy would refund the cost of our meal. However, my wife just received her credit card statement and __they never refunded the cost at all__ !! I don't know if they're dishonest or simply inefficient, but I feel as though I was lied to-- TWICE !!! read more

Went to dim sum for a friend's birthday celebration and OH was I impressed! The food was absolutely divine!!! I can't wait to go back and do dim sum again. The endless supply of food carts and yummies upon them are like presents from the food gods on a Sunday afternoon. The coffee-glazed ribs are OH MY GOD! One of the fun things about this place is it's attached to the Musashino Sushi Dokoro place below. This allows you to have the best of both Chinese and Sushi. Anyway, we started off with soups. I got the egg drop others got this or wanton or miso. Since I like sushi we ordered as sashimi the tuna, salmon, escolar (my favorite), octopus and unagi. We also ordered several rolls. Marilyn Monroll, Dragon roll and rainbow roll. One of the group went with Chinese. The combo fried rice and Szechuan Spicy Duck. I put away several Tsingsao beers. Very good and a lot of food for 3 people. They also do Dim Sum on the weekends which is a nice change of pace. We tried this a few visits ago and enjoyed it. read more

Can this place be better? Of course. Its not perfect, but g' dang this is the best Dim Sum place I've ever been to! Now now, not to over-hype this place, I only eat Dim Sum once every 2-3 months or so. Its safe to say the place is well decorated and the restaurant actually pretty clean. Its refreshing to experience good service from a dim sum place. The Dim Sum gets rolled around to your table in carts with the food steaming fresh. Shrimp dumplings - standard, nothing special but done right. Fried shrimp ball - my favorite dim sum item Sticky Rice - Really good, but smaller proportion than one would like. This place is an absolute scam. The 'food' here is gas-station quality for exorbitant prices. Almost half of the volume of the seafood fried rice I ordered was made up of massive, rubbery chunks of imitation crab, which is ridiculous for $18. The sweet and sour tofu my mom got was a dangerously bright color orange color and tasted saccharine. The appetizers had the bizarre texture of a dish sponge. AVOID THIS PLACE! You can get a far tastier meal for your family anywhere else, and it probably won't cost you $70. read more

Everytime we come here we are beyond pleased. Our belly's are always filled with yummy goodness The atmosphere is calm and peaceful. We always come right around 11am (opening) everything is fresh and we beat the lunch crowd. The services is always good. Everyone is so friendly and the wait staff work together to keep tables clean and cleared. What a wonderful surprise. We were looking for Dim Sum on a Sunday and decided to try Chinatown. We went first to the Westlake location because it's closer only to find the didn't serve Dim Sum on Sunday but the North store does. It was worth the short relocation. The restaurant is in the building that used to be Red Lion. There is a bar in the lower level but the top floor is where the goods are. The dining area is a little small but they managed to bring through enough carts to keep us happy including one where they make table-side peeking duck buns and another with potstickers finished off at the table on a hot griddle. Everything was exceptionally well made and tasted great. It wasn't any more expensive than Shanghai and the service was outstanding. We will definitely be back! read more

A member of our four-person group chose Chinetown North in Austin, a venue completely new to me. So I checked it out on Yelp for guest comments and directions. Initiailly there was a navigation problem; my GPS brought me into the parking lot from the southbound frontage road on MoPac. I had trouble finding the entrance. The sign I saw read "Far East Sports Bar," or something similar. I drove up the south side of the building, parked, and made a foot recon. No restaurant entrance there. I moved my car to the east side of the building (the sports bar entrance), parked, and made another foot recon. I finally found the entrance on the north side, well-marked by statuary and signs. So I moved my car again; I wanted it to be visible to the other members of our party. Entering the restaurant required climbing a flight of stairs (as described in Yelp comments). My initial impression, from the wood carvings and lights, was an upscale establishment reminiscent of similar places in the actual Far East. My Chinese Restaurant Standards were set by my two years in Cholon, Viet Nam, Saigon's Chinatown. This is a high bar. The first criterion is a lot of Chinese chatter. Check. Yelp comments were luke warm about the food. I had the wonton soup and beef with broccoli. The soup was tasty, but barely warm. The brocolli beef was very good. The veggie was undercooked, just as I like it. The beef was succulant. It came with fried rice. Overall, The Yelp comments about the food were too negative. Our party's costs were under $18 per person, inclusive of tip and tax. No alcohol. Overall, I agree with other Yelp commenters, Very good, not great. Four stars. read more

Due to Covid our local China Cafe shut down off Spicewood Springs Rd. 2 people could eat from 1 serving size. We decided on Chinatown North off Greystone. Wednesday I ordered Kung Pao Chicken and General Tso Chicken (dinner menu) it was around $31.00. I don't mind spending money on meals that I'm unable to cook at home. Wow what a disappointment.... I was shocked when I got home & opened both containers. Not only do you get very small portions, the quality of the chicken was hideous. They put all the bad pieces of chicken you probably couldn't name in the Kung Pao dish, they couldn't hide these pieces in the General Tso they charge $16.00/plate for so they used really poor chicken pieces in this dish. **** If you are being money conscious like me because of these times, DO NOT order from here.**** You will leave disappointed and a stomach ache from all the fillers like chili's & peanuts. The Interior is nice, it makes it seem like the food and your experience will be fancy, but thats not really the case. The staff doesn't explain how this place works and when I asked, they seemed very clueless about it. The lady we asked spoke perfect English so, whats the problem? We figured it out ourselves. You can either do the dim sum, where they constantly bring around different carts with different foods like bbq buns, duck feet...etc. and the prices are based on "small, medium or large" dim sum dishes, but you have to ask if you want to know, otherwise, just pick what you want and pay what you chose. Its pretty much like a buffet because of the quality, taste and feel, except: they bring the food to you, and its a lot more expensive. So, all in all, I wouldnt come back to this place to eat because it just isnt worth it. This ain't your grandma's dim sum. Well, I take that back. It very well could be YOUR grandma's dim sum. But it's definitely not MY grandma's dim sum. It's totally gourmet-ized and fusion-ized in such a way that I'm sure my traditional Chinese grandmother would have scoffed at. But if you're looking for a higher-end dim sum experience and don't mind that it's not all that authentic, then Chinatown's dim sum may be just what you're looking for. Here's a list of the few of the offerings we tried on a recent visit: Peking duck (served in little steamed bread pockets rather than on the traditional pancakes); miso sea bass filet; coffee glazed baby back ribs with a Reddi Whip garnish (yes, really - they even spray the Reddi Whip right out of the can at your table when you order it); crab and avocado ball (sadly, made with krab rather than crab); Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce; salt and pepper shrimp; walnut shrimp; pork and shrimp pot stickers; pork shu mai; shrimp har gao; sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves (zong zi); and Chinese custard tarts (dan ta). There is a much larger than usual emphasis on presentation; for example, the two shrimp dishes were served in martini glasses. Preparation was pretty good across the board. I wasn't wild about the krab ball, but I thought everything else was pretty tasty, once I got over my "this isn't _real_ dim sum" initial reaction. Portions are a bit on the small side for the price; dishes ranged from $2.65 (for two really small dan ta) to $8.95 (for enough sea bass for four people to have about two small bites apiece). However, I think because we knew it was going to be pricey, we didn't indulge quite as much as we might otherwise have, and the total didn't end up being all that much considering what we got - four of us ate for just shy of $120, and three of us had drinks (I did really appreciate that they added a mimosa/bloody mary cart to the usual mix of dim sum pushcarts, because now I know that bloody marys taste great with dim sum!). Service was excellent. All the servers were very friendly and fun, much more so than your average dim sum restaurant (OK, so that's not saying much). And I loved that the cart with the potstickers and turnip cakes had a little hot plate so that the server could re-warm your goodies for you when you ordered them! Being the photo freak that I am, I took a bunch of pics and uploaded them here. They didn't turn out great, but you can get an idea of what to expect. If you're looking for a fancier Sunday brunch experience or have a dim sum/Asian food newbie along who needs to be broken in gently, take a visit to Chinatown and check out their dim sum offerings (weekends only). Chinatown's regular menu is cut from the same cloth; gourmet-ized Chinese food for Americans, sort of along the lines of P.F. Chang's - only it's not a chain, which makes the experience more palatable in my book. Me, I'd normally rather have a more traditional experience, but I fully recognize and respect the niche Chinatown is filling here, and find it to be thoroughly enjoyable and surprisingly tasty, despite myself. read more

Like other yelpers I am here to rate my dim sum experience at Chinatown. I remember those days being dragged out of my bed to have dimsum at 6am (because popular dim sum places get sold out by 10am back home). Yes, dim sum eating is a competitive sport in my family. Generally speaking, the dim sum dishes are generally good, very similar to Shanghai Restaurant BUT, but, it will not be my choice for dim sum in the future for several reasons. - Bad turnip cake. It was made too soft and lack of turnip taste. And where is my Srirancha hot sauce?! - Expensive and unreasonable tea price. $10 bucks for Chinese Tea? You have got to be kidding me. When the manager heard me talking to my friend about the tea price, he jumped in and said, 'oh if you invite more people to come, the tea price is still going to be $10'. He even said that if I had this tea in China it will not be as expensive. Excuse me, a lot of tea leaves are grown in the US these days. Stereotypical dumbass. - I knew this place is going to be expensive. For my friend who can eat dim sum all day and will not get full, we ordered a pan fried noodle and that took forever to arrive too. I must give credit to creative side plates like the espresso glazed ribs. My friends ordered the martini glass of salt & pepper shrimps and that was a big rip-off to get 5-6 shrimps for $8. Overall, the servers are all very polite and nice. The atmosphere is beautifully decorated and westernized. I am just not used to seeing wine storage in a Chinese restaurant. After all, this is supposed to be a high-end PF-Chang place, I shouldn't expect something more "Chinese". To find a good place to eat dim sum is to find where most Chinese go. That has always been something I firmly believe in. Dim sum place is supposed to be loud, noisy, busy traffic and chaotic. If you prefer quiet time, you will like Chinatown. read more

Dim Sum: I enjoy the environment, the beautiful presentations, and the wide selection. The times to arrive on a Sunday are with us heathen at 11:15, or at 1:45 after the deluge of churchgoers has receded. I'm generally ok with the prices, tending to spend $25-45 per head, but $10 for a pot of tea is shameless gouging. Staff varies; one waitress is severely phoning it in, but even that has, in its awfulness, become perversely entertaining, like the service at Kerbey Lane. Everyone else has been cheerful, capable and helpful. When I get a weekday lunch combo here, I want to eat light. Of the two "one veg, one mushroom" options ($8, be sure to request steamed rice), the bok choi and shiitake is miles better than the snow pea and portobello. The former is light and tasty, with no discernible sauce. The latter comes in a lake of thick brown saltsauce and, in a sin of both commission and omission, contains undisclosed bell pepper. If the restaurant sinks into a pit of lava overnight, this is why. I don't feel the msg effects others complain of, but I did get high on some hot mustard here once, feeling distinctly woozy for several minutes. Someone has since told me that it's a notoriously adulterated condiment, loaded with sulfites and other agents. I've been back twice with no repeat of the effect, and I'm not willing to use a larger vein, but I doubt anyone reading this needs to be warned away: Chinese isn't a cuisine for the delicate of constitution or faint of heart. Remember the famous Cantonese saying: "Anything that walks, swims, crawls, or flies with its back to heaven is edible." That's not wisdom, it's a warning. Enjoy! read more

Argh. I just want to preface this by saying: I've been here several times for Dim Sum (say, 5-6) and once for regular dinner service. I know it's pricey for Dim Sum. Dinner was great. It was a long time ago.. I don't remember what we got exactly but it was delicious and beautifully presented. A bit more than what you'd normally pay at a regular Chinese joint, but the hike in price was more than represented in quality of food. Dim Sum the next several times was lovely. A little more expensive than usual, but the exceptional Shanghai dumplings made up for it. My boyfriend and I could still be stuffed for ~$35 (including a bloody mary or two)... This time the bill was over $50 and we definitely weren't nearly so stuffed.. The last time however, something was wrong. I could hardly enjoy the food as each time we selected something from a cart and our card was marked, we were rather suspicious that we were being charged incorrectly. We got 6 dishes, and 3 of them were absolutely marked incorrectly. One was off-menu but 2 little steamed chicken buns should not be a L when comparable items (all other steam buns or chicken buns) were S or M priced dishes.. The one that really got our goat was being charged the 'Special' price ($7.95) for the pork shanghai dumplings (should have just been the XL price).. We've eaten 2 orders of these every time we've been here and have tried the ones with crab (don't like 'em as much) and these were most definitely JUST pork... So yeah. $8 for 3 little dumplings. That's insane. A fourth item (shrimp won tons) was off-menu as well and we were charged for an XL when comparable items were priced lower. $8 for 2 fried shrimp pockets. They were fantastically delicious, but damn. Not $8 worth of delicious. I generally don't hesitate to bring the bill to someone and question things if need be, but damn I just didn't feel like it.. I was just so disappointed that I was feeling potentially taken advantage of by this caliber of place that I have enjoyed so much in the past. I felt totally dejected and betrayed. I should NOT have to worry about paying the "Stupid Tax" here. You know, when you notice there's a random $2.95 charge on your bill and when you ask someone about it they don't even investigate, they just go "Oh I'm so sorry! I'll take it off!". .That's the stupid tax. If you've never noticed it on a bill before, you've probably paid it a few times. I'm generally on the lookout for it, but places definitely gain my trust and I let my guard down. I've eaten Dim Sum at many other places where there was no price listing to look at, and there wasn't a single English word on the little tally sheets, and I've never felt cheated before. If they've changed priced, they need to fucking make note of that on the item/price listings they leave on your table. I hope they're not just trying to take advantage of people's ignorance and hesitance to ask questions when they're sliding food onto your table if you so much as glance at it. That's how dim sum works but if you're not expecting it, it can be intimidating to say "no, no!" to get things you don't want taken off your table. I'm giving 3 stars in deference to the previous lovely times I've had here, and due to the possibility that 3-4 separate servers made mistakes and/or they changed their prices and failed to mark them anywhere. If the latter is the case, that's just bad form in itself regardless, and this place is officially disproportionately priced. Wow, this got long. I'm analyzing it like a breakup or something.
