The visit was disappointing. As much as we like Chikurin at Sheapshedbay, we couldn't enjoy our dinner at 86th street. First of all we waiting for our order for almost an hour, unbelievable, as the place was practically empty, and we didn't order anything special. All the Chikurin locations have been closing down one by one over the years so I'm glad this place still exists! Big food portions, fast delivery. Go-to from here has always been chicken teriyaki and it has never disappointed in the past but the last two times the chicken was extremely chewy and undercooked. Ended up spitting most of it out :/ I also love the cabbage that comes underneath because even though it's drenched in the teriyaki sauce it still has a crunch to it but today it was very soggy and mushy. Really glad this place is open during this pandemic to fufill my sushi cravings. It's nothing fancy and I probably wouldn't get sashimi here but the classic rolls, appetizers and hot entrees are good. The salmon from my salmon avocado roll tasted a bit fishy today but historically, (I've been coming here for a few years) I've never had this issue, so maybe today was an off day. The spicy tuna or salmon pizza appetizer is my go to appetizer - the avocados, spicy tuna/salmon and eel sauce is a great combo. I stopped by recently for dinner with my boyfriend and classic rolls are still priced at anywhere from $3.75 - $4.95! A steal, really, considering prices these days. Between my boyfriend and I, we ordered 6 rolls, pork gyoza, 2 miso soups, and 2 drinks. Our dinner came out to around $50 including tax and tip. The rolls here are decent and will probably satisfy any sushi cravings, but I wouldn't set expectations too high. Each roll has a really thin layer of rice, & the fillings are good considering the price. Miso soups were really tasty though & the pork gyoza sauce paired well with the dumplings. My only grievances with the dining experience would be that the menus need a bit of cleaning.. there's an unpleasant smell that comes off whenever the pages are flipped. Surprisingly, the sushi was really good for a 50% off sushi restaurant. The quality of the sushi was on par with some of the best 50% off spots I've ever been to. I liked that the inside of the restaurant was very simple too. There was plenty of seating inside and I was highly doubting it would get crowded because diagonally located was Sake Sushi, which attracts all of the teens. On the night I came here, there was 1 loud party, but other than that disturbance the restaurant was really quiet and I felt I was actually talking too loud. The service was excellent here too. The waiter was very patient with us and one of the waitresses was very helpful in letting me know that I could order different flavors for the fried ice cream. The fried ice cream order comes in 2 giant pieces and you can order a different flavor for each piece. Great sushi! I came here for lunch take-out on a weekday and there was no line at all and only a few people in the restaurant. I do have to admit that the cashier is located in a kind of awkward area. You have to squeeze between a table in order to get the menu and while I was standing there waiting for my order, I felt like I was blocking the way of the cooks coming out of the kitchen. In terms of the decor, the tables seemed very clean and I also liked the dim lighting. The floors were kind of sticky though which was kind of a turn off! So I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll, Salmon Avocado Roll, and V-Roll. You can get a great lunch deal of $7.95 for 3 Classic Rolls but since I've recently converted to foodie-ism, I wanted to try at least one of their special rolls so I ended up paying $14 for 3 rolls, which I would say is reasonable. Definitely will come back for the lunch special next time! I can't really quantify the quality of the sushi since I have horrible taste buds so I'll comment on what each one tasted like to give yelpers who are unfamiliar with sushi a better understanding of what each one is: Spicy Tuna- The center is mushy and it has a slight spiciness to it. Salmon Avocado- Yummy!! The salmon and avocado were both really firm which I love since I hate mushy salmon/avocado bleh! V-Roll- I saw a lot of yelpers recommending this one so I decided to try it out. It has eel and avocado inside and salmon on top. The description says that it has a sweet sauce on top but I didn't really taste the sweetness. The V-Roll was good but I don't think I would get it again since it was $8/8 pieces and I could've saved myself $5 if I had gotten another classic roll. I've been here a couple of times since they opened and the food has been of consistent quality. They're right on the corner of Bay 35th and I think the canopy is bright green if I remember correctly. This new location is definitely smaller than their old location, but I think this space works for them; I feel most people do carryout or delivery, but there's still a decent amount of seating (30 people?). Are you going to find amazing sushi here? Nope. The sushi here isn't bad, decent quality and satisfies a sushi craving. I personally like there cooked food more than their sushi... The udon here is a pretty solid option (better than some other sushi restaurants) and the salads are like that of typical sushi restaurants. Sad! I've been supporting this business since I've moved to the neighborhood for years. I ordered today and experienced a very rude delivery man, just because I didn't tip right away. Now I'm a person that ALWAYS tips but I tip after receiving my food and decide if my delivery person deserves more tip or the standard. Then to top it off, the food smells rotten. The restaurant then calls me being rude claiming that I've never bought any food from them, how all their food is fresh, which typically it is BUT unfortunately this time it wasn't. The service was very fast. I ordered via yelp and there was some confusion on payment when I arrived. There might be a glitch on their end during the order prints but I got charged so they definitely got paid. When I get a chance to come to Brooklyn, I always stop by here because their sushi is very reasonably priced ($2.50 for a roll!!). Also, the quality of their sushi is very good too. I tried the shrimp tempura roll, rock n'roll roll, eel roll, and Philadelphia roll. I wish the eel roll had the sweet eel sauce on it, which is how I usually see it served in other places. This place reminds me sushi park but it's in Brooklyn and less packed. They have large varieties of special rolls, regular rolls, sushi and sashimi. You will see how large their menu is and deciding what to get will probably be the most difficult part because everything sounds so good. The best part is that it is inexpensive and delicious. So if you're around the area definitely give this place a try. One thing I wouldn't recommend would be the egg roll sushi. From the appearance, to the taste it was no good. You can definitely tell it's just been sitting in the fridge for awhile and that is exactly what it tasted like, stale. Oh my goodness. Words are beyond me when I had this restaurant! This is by far the MOST generous sushi restaurant that I've ever eaten at! The portions are RIDICULOUSLY huge and makes you feel that you've gotten your money's worth! Most of the Japanese cuisines that I've eaten at so far have been very nit picky on how much they give! The Pork katsu don for example was HUGE! Most places only give you one pork chop while Chikurin gives you three big chops! After reading some of the great reviews by follow yelpers, I had to give this place a try. I came on a Wednesday at 8:30 pm and there was no wait. We was seated and our waiter gave us the menu. The service is quick and fast because there's was not much other tables. I ordered 10 salmon sushi and the V-Roll. Love the sauce that was on the V-roll. It was sweet and sour but mixed in a good ratio. The salmon was very fresh. The only problem was for the salmon sushi the rice would fall apart very quickly. I highly recommend the V-roll. The price for Chikurin is very reasonable for someone that eat sushi. It was a $1 for sushi/sashimi. The service is good but they seem to rush us out the door a little today. This has been my go-to sushi restaurant in Bensonhurst for the past few years and for good reason: it's delicious food for cheap, not to mention you have a crazy wide selection to choose from! The classic rolls are $2-3 a pop and while the special rolls are just a tad more expensive, they're sure to satisfy the curious palette and are surprisingly filling. Personally, I've never have to drop more than $15 here on 3-4 tasty rolls of sushi, depending on how I mix and match the classic & special rolls. The service is great. If you come here often enough, you'll find that the man working here is quick to notice the sushi you like and he'll suggest it the next time you come in to order. Definitely knows how to make you feel like a prioritized customer! I usually order my food to go, but I've also dined in a good number of times and I can say that it's a homely experience, not like any other neighborhood joint where you simply come in, eat your food, and leave -- here at Chikurin, you're taken care of. The food presentation is always on point and the wait staff is prompt on refilling your tea (it's free and it's the bomb, seriously I drink at least three cup-fulls whenever I come here). The only thing I would avoid are the entree dishes eg. rice and noodles, which I've tried on multiple occasions and are pretty dry in terms of flavor and only average at best. Otherwise, I highly recommend this place if you're in the area!!
