I hadn't been to this place since 2015 so it's literally been one decade and I'm so grateful to say that the food has not declined and the service was great. I came here on a Friday night with my son and it was such a pleasure. I ordered the salmon sushi pizza and the spicy salmon roll with a small hot sake. For him I ordered a cooked sushi roll and the spring rolls and everything tasted great. The service was great and our waitress was friendly and attentive. Initially, we were the only ones in the restaurant, but later people started to trickle in. We sat near the small fish tank with the glow fish and everything was really relaxing for a Friday night. Friday dinner Came here after Wasabi across the street had a 40 min wait. There was no wait here, or should I say there were no customers. A couple was sitting in there when we arrived and left soon after, meaning we were the only ones there. They had a handful of takeout orders so not completely no business. This place doesn't necessarily have anything "bad" but there's nothing much "good" about it. It's very 86th street. I would rather eat at Wasabi. We ordered (right to left, top to bottom in my pic): dragon, Hawaii, white Russian, Brooklyn, spider Favorite was the white Russian maybe because the tuna on top was torched. The menu didn't note that. Least favorite was either the Brooklyn or Hawaii. General comment on all of them is that they skimp on ingredients. My photo doesn't show their cross section but basically the ingredients are not well balanced on the insides. The seafood is always the least represented ingredient. If you look at the Brooklyn roll (shrimp, kani, tempura crunch), the insides are 80% tempura crunch, 10% shrimp, and 10% kani. The spider roll should be a whole soft shell crab fried and rolled in. The batter was twice the thickness of the crab. I miss the way Wasabi has thick crab meat and it comes out piping hot. Another general comment that I find is an issue across all Brooklyn sushi places is that the rice isn't tart at all. It didn't come out hot but at least it wasn't dry and hard. I like how their menu has pictures of all rolls, but most didn't appeal to us for some reason. Wasabi's presentation is much better. I also like how Wasabi's menu would tell you which items are cooked. That's helpful for those who don't want to eat raw fish. Service was good. We were in and out of this place in 30 min. I joked we can go back to Wasabi for sushi part two. The lady was diligent about filling our teacups even though we needed refills two minutes apart from each other. Good that tea was hot. Lately Chikurun has been my go to DoorDash order because they hit every time! I usually get a bento box because it is an amazing deal. It's approximately 20 dollars for your choice, I usually go with beef negimaki or salmon teriyaki. It comes with vegetables, white rice, two shumai, and California roll inside the box. In addition they give you a miso soup and salad PLUS an app choice of either shumai, gyoza, or shrimp and veg tempura. This place does the job well enough and is close enough to my parents' place that it's the location we usually use when getting Japanese food. It's standard fare and the quality is fine. No complaints and no raves. When ordering via apps such as Grubhub, I have requested certain things and they actually read the notes and called about something. Now I usually call in advance to make a note of something for an upcharge and they usually tell me to add a sauce for the additional charge. The woman I usually speak with is nice and the orders are correct. The tempura sauce is good and I feel the need to make note of that because lots of places these days no long have/make good sauces and without sauces, the food is not the same. I used to love Chikurin, so I ordered some tonight via Ubereat. The food delivered way after the estimate arrive time (more than half hr delay), called the restaurant couple times no one pick up. Finally after the 4th tried, the staff said the delivery was out, then 15 mins later I called again, same answer, it is on the way. Finally after 45 mins after the estimate arrival time, my food is here. Order at 8pm, didn't arrive until 9:45pm. While I am eating, a big bone hide at the yellowtail roll, glad that I didn't swallow it and kids didn't eat that! Then a big raw fish skin on my chirashi.... Hm... never again. My favorite go to for sushi! Indoor or takeout. I've been coming to Chikurin for like a decade now I think. Since I was in high school. A friend of mine lives near here so we always ate here for the lunch special. Anyway, I haven't been back for maybe a year or two, and recently visited this year. The location moved! It is now on a corner instead. Very green decor. Same waiter! Food is delicious as always. Fresh and hot, with great flavor and presentation. Portions are great. The bento dinner is massive and I couldn't finish it all in one sitting. Really good value so I highly recommend. Overall, the restaurant has a fresh new aesthetic, new location, but same great taste and service. Show them some love and support by either dining in or taking out. They offer indoor dining as well as outdoor seating!! This is my go to sushi place, my one and only gripe is the parking situation! (Not their fault though-- I'm just warning my fellow drivers out there) Bath Beach is terrible for drivers. My absolute favorite go-to order is the Sakedon, which is an order of 12 piece salmon sashimi with rice and your choice of soup or salad. Every time I order, the fish is fresh and so tasty! I can't get enough! and the price is just right, around $20 or so. If I can make it for the lunch special, the lunch bento is an amazing deal! It comes with your choice of meat, tempura, and sides. This is also the only place I know that offers both soup and salad with their lunch specials. And you can never go wrong with a two/three roll lunch special. I conveniently ordered online ahead of time. I arrived at the quoted time of 20-30 minutes. The restaurant was empty but there were takeout/delivery orders going in and out. I got there and had to wait another 20 minutes for my order. This pushed back my scheduled and I ended up being late for work. Waited for about 45-50 minutes for two basic rolls. Sure, I paid an affordable lunch special price and waited a long time. I opened up my food and found three skimpy rolls with only hollow, only cucumber sticking out ends of a roll. Came here spontaneously with my friends after a nearby pho place was closed. I've never been to their old location so I have nothing to compare to, but the seating was comfortable. We weren't planning on arriving before lunch ends, but we realized while looking through the menu that we were there just before lunch ended 11:30am to 4pm, as stated on the menu. At around 3:45, we proceeded to order from the lunch menu, but the waiter told us lunch ended at 3:30. Why would the menu say it ends at 4pm when it actually ends at 3:30? We didn't argue with him since we didn't go there just for their lunch special, and we proceeded to order three classic rolls each. The food itself was good and fresh, but the whole experience would've been better had we not been falsely advertised. Absolutely love love love love this place and they're totally under-rated on yelp. I've been coming to this establishment since before they moved locations from 22nd ave. They've always had such great customer service, especially if you get the tall asian waitor. When they first moved to this new location, it took some time for them to get settled in and make sure they were serving the same quality foods but after the adjustment, their sushis were really good (as it always have been). Since covid, I have been going to their outdoor dining often and you can just see how much work they put into it! New location opened up. Menu selection is bigger but they got rid of some stuff from their old locations. Everything looks pretty (most all have pictures which is nice) and colorful. It is smaller than old locations and they are short staffed (job positions posted at door for all postions) so the one staff they have is so new that he doesn't understand much or is slow. We came on a busy Friday night with understanding they just reopen. Owner kept drinking with other tables while lady owner ran the place since he was busy socializing and the poor new staff didn't know much. Saw 2 other tables with my table all asked for checks and to go boxes were waiting for a long time. Owner said okay but forget or new staff forget so the lady owner basically ran to get everything for all the tables. Food is good or is the same but on ridiculously large plates for no reasons. Took up much of the space; good luck if you order more than the entree. Came with hubby and we both order entree with sushi. Hubby got the Chirashi and sushi and I got yaki udon with sushi. My udon was in a ridiculous large plate that the sushi barely had space. I understand the concept behind plating but your store's tables are narrow for a 2-top. If you are a bigger party, they can push another table to make it bigger but good luck to party of 2. Still, overall, it's a good place. The tables are well spaced out and everyone was wearing masks. Typically when ordering bento boxes, I don't expect much so I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box and my friend ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box as well as a kani salad and extra tuna roll to share. But we were very surprised to see as the bento boxes came out, there were huge portions and everything tasted amazing. We struggled to finish the kani salad and tuna roll. Located on the busy 86th street, it can be confusing to choose which Japanese joint to eat at, but I can confidently say that Chikurin never disappoints. Their sashimi is always thickly cut and my cup of tea is rarely ever empty. A point to note is that most of the workers speak Cantonese but is still relatively fluent in English. After a stressful week from finals, I decided to order take out as a treat for my family and myself. I was told that my $35 order would be ready in about 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later and my order was ready for pickup :) The prices have definitely went up over the years, but I honestly rather they charge a bit more than have them slowly decline in quality. One piece of sushi/sashimi is now $1.35 and the rolls are close to $3-3.5 a roll, which really isn't too bad. Went there on Saturday 9/18/2021 for my dads birthday. They have an extended outdoor seating area we decided to take because of pandemic. It's not the fanciest place but my nephew loves the place, so my dads decided to go there. Because of my nephew we became quite the regulars here. We ordered 4 glasses of ice water and a cup of tea for my dad. The waiter/bus boy put my dads hot tea and 2 cups of ice water on the table and then his tray toppled and the 2 glass cup of ice water fell on my back and soaked my entire back and pants and everything shattered. Another waiter came out to see what the ruckus is about and said oh lucky it's only water, not too bad. When my pants and shirt is dripping of water. He said we feel so terrible let me give you a free house sake. When none of us drink alcohol. I didn't expect a free meal or anything but at least offer apps on the house or a 10-20% discount? Waiter started recommending their "best" apps saying we must try it like it's on the house but of course it wasn't and was charged in full minus the 5 dollars for the house sake. There are so many sushi places around, but whenever we're in the area we only come here even though the food quality has consistent gone down throughout pandemic.
