So let me first start off by saying I do afternoon tea every year for my birthday, and the service is always stellar. The ambience is always beautiful, with light jazzed and quiet conversations. But I would love to recognize Riley, who was my server. She was just the sweetest, kindest and the most thoughtful host. Every year that I've come and they ask what are you celebrating, and I mention my birthday was in a few days. She took the time to bring out the birthday duck with a candle, and it was just beautiful. She also helped me out with a solution to self parking. So kudos to Reilly please someone give her a raise. So onto the food, stellar as always there was only two things that I noticed, I missed the butter that goes with the scone, which I'm sure if I asked I would've received, but honestly, it was tasty without it. The only other thing is with a tea it gets weaker every time it gets refilled. Given that tea service price has increased to $65 plus the 9.25% sales tax and the 20% included gratuity came to about $90 (which was a little more than I was expecting, but inflation right). It would've been great to get the leaves changed out after the third pour, but other than that it was a 10 out of 10. read more

Chez Philippe is a grand experience perfect for special occasions. The food, service, and atmosphere are all excellent, as you would expect at this price point. I took my girlfriend here for our one-year because we wanted something more special than our usual date night spots for our special night. As far as special goes, the service and the grandiose of the hotel as a whole really delivered. Sure, if you look closely the Peabody will show its age, but I've never been anywhere more opulent. We came here for the experience, not just the food. But the food was great, too. In particular, the elk and scallop dishes stood out to me. My girlfriend's favorite was the beef. The ingredients were high quality, often local, and the plating was exciting. We particularly enjoyed eating the palate cleanser and chatting with Chef Keith in the kitchen. All in, I was out $575 for the experience. Local fine dining offers similarly good food for half the price. If you're only interested in the food, you'll find better value elsewhere. If you're interested in a special experience for your special occasion, it's hard to beat Chez Philippe. read more

The high tea consists a three-course menu of savory bite size sandwiches, raspberry scones and delicate desserts.The staff here are extremely courteous, professional and friendly. My server, Riley, made sure my visit was phenomal, and sure it was. The dining space is absolutely royal, beautiful, and exclusive. I have always wanted to go to a fancy tea party and this experience did not disappoint! First, each guest was able to select their own tea from the tea menu which included items such as scarlet, matcha, earl gray, and fruit options. I went with the peach tea and I am very happy with my choice. The staff was knowledgeable about the teas letting us know whether to add milk or water to each kind. We had 3 courses, finger sandwiches, a scone, and dessert. I enjoyed a few things from each course but for me there was too much sweet. The scone was cinnamon sugar with cranberries served with cream and jam. I would have preferred a plain flavored scone since desert was immediately following. I did enjoy the chicken curry salad sandwiches the best out of all 3 courses. The bride was gifted a bridal themed rubber duck and some peaybody champagne glasses which was a very nice touch. The reason for not scoring 5 stars would be my personal preference of the decor. I understand the hotel is a time capsule itself, but I do not understand the Tuscan theme in the restaurant. The Peabody Afternoon Tea experience is TOP NOTCH! I have experienced afternoon tea in many countries and this one ranks up there with some of my absolute favorites! Our server Hubert was amazing! Very friendly, informative, and attentive. The servers at the other tables around us were equally as welcoming and caring of their guests. The 2 of us each selected The Peabody Tea (Two Teas) option from the menu. For our teas, we selected the Chocolate Chai, Mystic Mint, Mulberry Mangosteen Hibiscus Powder, and Ruby Oolong. All four of these teas were wonderful! My favorite was the Chocolate Chia. We asked for additional water for each pot and Hubert gladly obliged. The 3 courses we received were also great! The tea sandwiches came first on a three-tiered tray. The scones came second and were HUGE and AMAZING. The jam and clotted cream were delicious. Finally, the sweets came on another three-tiered tray and were quite wonderful. We took our leftovers to go because we were both so stuffed we couldn't finish it all. Omg what a gem! I came here for a girl's afternoon tea lunch on a Thursday and I have no complaints. The food was delicious. We had one tea and the three courses. The first course was my favorite. The service was emasculate. They add 17% gratuity to the checks but I gave an extra tip because I was so happy with the service. Our server was Chris, he was outstanding. The ambiance is beautiful. This was such an unbelievable experience! We made two separate reservations and traveled 5 hours just to be turned away at the door because the "couldn't find" the reservations. We proceeded to show our confirmations and still got turned away. The supervisor, Glenn, was rude and aggressive. I left the restaurant and asked the front desk to help me understand. They didn't see why we were turned away, and even suggested mentioning their name to help us get in. We returned back to the restaurant only to be turned away again. What a terrible experience for something we were looking forward to enjoying together. As cool as it could be, I wouldn't recommend going there. read more

Like many other reviews, this is based on the Afternoon Tea experience. On our recent trip to Memphis, I wanted an excuse to visit the Peabody without staying there. A friend recommended the Afternoon Tea. I really enjoy tea in general and I also love the kind of finger sandwiches that come with a nice afternoon tea service, so this was an easy sell for me. We made a reservation via their website for a Sunday afternoon. First, let's address the price. Yes, $50 per person is quite a bit to spend on a meal without booze. However, this sort of thing is meant to be an experience--as much about the service and atmosphere as the food and tea. Is it a good value? No. Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes, when you account for the level of service and the portion sizes (you get a light meal, not a light snack). On arriving, we were immediately greeted, asked about allergies (none), and led to our table. A waiter held my chair. Not being a capital L lady I had no idea how to deal with that. We pushed past the awkwardness and settled in. Chez Philippe is in the interior of the Peabody and has no windows. Instead, there are a number of murals depicting a masquerade of sorts. It's a bit dimly lit, but in a mood-lighting way not in a "can't they afford lighting" way. The table was set for the two of us, with two place settings, flowers, tea cozies, and milk, honey, and sugar waiting. The menus included a list of teas and the courses. Water was promptly provided and our waiter explained the courses and we placed our tea orders (Earl Grey for me and a ginger tea for my dining companion). We each received our own pot. The pots are not charming, but very functional glass pots. The waiter poured an initial cup for each of us and topped the pots with their cozies to keep warm. We were able to enjoy the tea for a few minutes before the first course came out. The first course was the savory course. There were five items for each diner included in this course. Four were appetizer sized toasts: pimento cheese with tomato, cucumber, and goat cheese; a salmon mousse; a crab salad; and prosciutto with cantaloupe. The fifth was curried chicken salad on a mini-croissant. All were very good and a little more substantial that I was expecting. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite but I'm a sucker for curried chicken. Next came the scones. We had one each and they were served with clotted cream and jam. The scone was cinnamon cranberry. I found it to be sweeter than I would have liked but the texture--somewhere between a drop-biscuit and cake--was excellent. The dessert course was decadent and almost too much at that point. We'd each had a pot of tea by then and were on our second pots. But my sweet-tooth demanded I have every last pastry offered, so I had all five: a strawberry, pistachio, and white chocolate opera cake (the pistachio flavor was lacking but it was beautiful); an orange and raspberry macaron; a coconut and chocolate macaroon; a lemon cheese cake with an adorable chocolate duck; and a Linzer cake. My favorite was easily the Linzer cake (but I like Linzer anything ... cookie, torte, you name it). In addition to the courses arriving and being cleared promptly, our waiter and other staff checked on us a number of times during the experience. This is a place that prides itself on a level of service to which most of us are unaccustomed. The wait staff to occupied table ratio was close to 1 to 1. It's really the service that lifts this to five stars. Although I'm totally at home with divey takeout spots, I can appreciate an experience where service is an art. read more

Follows an explanation of the tea selection and three course petit fours service. This was far and above the best restaurant experience I have ever enjoyed in all my 68 years of enthusiastic eating! I was staying at the Peabody with a group of older ladies to attend a bridge tournament. We were happy but tired and were looking for a spot to enjoy a light supper. The other hotel restaurants were packed, but Chez Philippe was happy to accommodate us even though we shared that we did not have the appetite for the full tasting menu they offer. The chef permitted us to share two of the multi course dinners and so we took a seat. And thus entered a magical fourth dimension! Everything they brought us to try was simply the best food we had ever tasted! And, between us and our 350 collective years of eating our way through assorted cuisines across the globe, this was a very high bar! But the real magic was the joyful, warm hospitality of the staff! We were just four old broads sharing a pared down menu. Clearly not high rollers prepared to order the best of the wine cellar and all the extras. One of the best meals I've ever had. This place can get a Michelin star - does it have one already? Service was perfect. The dining room is small (intimate) and beautiful. We were here with a convention group and - you know - you generally have to lower your expectations because the staff will be making food for a very large group to be served at the same time, so the menu will be limited, food will be hot for some, cold for others, chicken will be overdone, etc., so you can't expect that it will be as good as if it was just you and your loved one... Well, Chez Phillipe defied and denied all those expectations. Our dinner was wonderful! We were all served the same thing: salad, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, spinach, and a dessert of miniature pecan pie, lemon custard tart, and red velvet cake. The steak was a perfect buttery medium rare, the chicken was not dry, everything was as perfect as one could hope. Service was exemplary. The food took a bit, but that's to be expected with a group of 7. When the food came out, we were very impressed! It was delicious and the presentation was great. What an amazing experience! I decided to treat myself to a seven course dinner with wine pairing when my daughter's flight to Memphis was delayed and I was "stranded " in the Awesome Peabody hotel. A solid three stars for afternoon tea - not bad, but definitely not great or worth the high price (basically $100 for 2 people after tip). The good: - Service was very friendly, proper, and formal. The server even allowed me to switch out my tea selection - very accommodating. - The blueberry scone was EXCELLENT, warm and served with clotted cream and strawberry jam. - It was very easy to make a reservation by phone and they could fit us in with just a day notice. - The main room was lovely - ambiance would have been lovey in there. The not so good - There were several empty tables in the main room, but we were seated in the room right to the left of the entrance in the corner, by a bridal tea party group of about 10. This wouldn't be too much of an issue, but there was a kid playing his video game on full volume the entire time which totally wrecked the ambience. I get that the restaurant can't control its guests, but the staff should have seen that this would have been less than pleasant for me and my boyfriend and put us in the main room. - The food was just okay. The scone was the star and the chicken salad sandwich was okay, but we left half the desserts uneaten (and this is very unusual for us). The macaron and the opera cake in particular were disappointing. Bottom line - the quality and quantity of these ingredients is not worth the price. At some point in your Memphis life, I implore you to take a load off to point your pinky high in the air and sip tea like a civilized Southerner. Chez Philippe has a traditional English afternoon tea between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays. You get a three-course menu that begins with your choice of tea. The choices are two pages long. I got the Green Tea: Organic Dancing Leaves. The tea is followed by tiny tea sandwiches. Those options include chicken salad in croissants, prosciutto, salmon and cucumber/tomato sandwiches. The staff then brings out warm scones with butter and jelly, followed by a wide range of desserts. These are all finger-sized foods, minus the scones. I suggest you don't eat any carbs before this debaucherous deliciousness. I went with a group of 20 girls, but you can go with your favorite pal or a couple of friends. It's $30 without champagne, $40 with champagne and $24 for children, plus tax. One cool perk is you can validate your valet ticket for free. My daughter and I had an amazing afternoon tea today. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the service, the atmosphere and the food. Glenn, the host was attentive and friendly. We were seated right away in such a beautiful dining space. Our server was Chris , and he was beyond attentive and personable. My daughter thought he was the best waiter we have ever had! The tea service is three courses. We are dairy free due to an allergy, and the staff and kitchen made sure to adhere to our request. The tea sandwiches for the first course were fresh and filling. The next course was a cranberry and cinnamon scone that is amazing , and so big we had to ask for a box so we could enjoy the third course of petite desserts! The dining room is beautifully done and nice and quite. The seating is far enough apart that you do not overheat conversations from another table , and it is intimate enough to have a conversation with your table. After three years, Chez Philippe returns to the South's Grand Hotel! Terrific service and menu! Had the opportunity to be part of their soft opening at the hotel's invitation...and they delivered an experience to be remembered for years to come! Five courses - beautifully presented - with spot on wine pairings. Important! Having a meal at Chez Philippe is about the entire dining experience. Please plan enough time (at least 2- 2.5 hours) to enjoy and savor the beautifully presented and prepared courses. The amuse bouche (a single amazing bite) launched our culinary journey. The first taste, a Japanese bread with savory butter. Followed by roasted celeriac with lightly mint flavored greens and a delicate buttermilk sauce (sounds intriguing, doesn't it?!? A warm, savory opening to what's to come...) Next, a Dungeness crab cake with Japanese greens accompanied by a gorgeous fume from the crab carapace. Finishing the seafood courses, lightly poached halibut topped with grilled leek accompanied by a well-balanced Chablis. Chef presented a citrus sorbet topped with pink peppercorn to clear the pallet and reset for the next dish, which was a perfectly prepared short rib accompanied by a grand marnier-based aspic. Dessert was the grand finale and fortissimo presentation of the meal - the best tastes of fall and Thanksgiving - pumpkin and apple spice, streusel, raspberry... a gorgeous explosion of flavors for the season. If you are looking for that "special place where memories are made" - Chez Philippe has to be on your short list. From preparation to presentation to palate pleasure - this is a one-of-a-kind dining experience! The Peabody Hotel's Chez Philippe restaurant will re-open next week for reservations only. My wife and had the afternoon tea at Chez Phillipe recently. It was my first afternoon tea. we had an excellent experience. The meal consisted of 3 courses, first sandwiches, next scones with butter and jam and last course consists of desserts. The restaurant was very accommodating of our dietary restrictions. The tea was delicious. I had the Pu Euhr and my wife had a peach blossom white tea. The amount of food is deceivingly generous; by the time we reached the third course, we were quite full and had to take the desserts home. It was a beautiful venue and we had a great time. WOW WOW WOW! One of the best meals Ive ever eaten in my life. The restaurant is located in the famous Peabody Hotel. The entire hotel is stunning and I highly recommend spending some time exploring either before or after the meal. Especially save time to see the infamous Peabody Ducks!! (Google it if you don't know what I mean). Now time for the menu. This restaurant is all based on pre fix choices. You can get a 4-course meal for $95 a person or a 7-course meal for $135 a person. I chose the 4-course option however I was presented with extra courses totaling eight separate dishes. The service was fantastic always offering water or bread refills between courses and there was never too long of a wait. The menu had four different sections and I was told to choose one from each part. From the garden choices I decided on the smoked beef tartare. From the ocean choices I decided on the scottish langoustines. From the land choices I decided on the local filet mignon. And for the confection choices I decided on the creme brulee. The first course I got was the amuse bouche which is compliments of the chef and gets you geared up for their style of cooking. I forgot what exactly it was but it tasted like goat cheese on one side and a jelly on the other. It was fantastic! Next I got the beef tartare. It had an egg on top which I mixed into the dish to add more flavor. The smokiness was a bit much for my tasting but the egg helped make it a little more mild. Next I was given the langoustines. Once again it had an egg on top that I mixed into the risotto. (Definitely got my fare share of protein during this meal). The risotto was prepared so wonderfully with the seasoning. Third course I was presented with a raspberry sorbet, which confused me a bit because it was before my steak. However it was very good and I enjoyed it. Next I got the filet mignon. The steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it and it was served with very interesting whipped/crusted potatoes. For the sixth course I was presented with the creme brulee I ordered. It was a trip featuring apple, pecan, and pistachio. I listed them in the order of my preference. I was extremely stuffed after the meal but was still presented with some extra desserts of key lime pie and peanut butter squares. I had to ask for them to go. And finally while getting the check to pay for the meal I was presented with my last course which was french macarons in a cute little box to take home. Amazing meal and fantastic service. Best Thanksgiving feast ever!! First of all the restaurant itself is beautiful! You are treated like royalty! They started us out with Foie Gras, it was so creamy and good, in a little mason jar, with toasted macadamia nuts, chilled apples and delicate little flowers, served with brioche toasts. I could of stopped there and been happy. It was the best Foie I have ever had. So good. The soup, creamy cauliflower, how have I never had creamy cauliflower soup before? It was so good. I will be making it at home for sure this winter! The Thanksgiving entree looked very nontraditional, small even. But it had so much flavor and I was so full after, I hurt, worse than when I make it for my family and gorge myself, like I do every thanksgiving. The turkey was so tender and had so much flavor and the stuffing was different but so tasty, lingonberries instead of cranberries, very nice and delicious. The creamed spinach was so concentrated and flavorful. There were no mashed potatoes but they were not missed! What a great Thanksgiving meal. The first one I've ever not cooked and I was so pleased. Plus my feet did not hurt and there was no mess to clean up. The deserts, I had no room for them, but ate them anyway. The pastry chef is awesome! So delicious. And they sent us away with macaroons in a cute little box. The Peabody hotel had three Thanksgiving options, the hotel itself does a buffet (looked amazing), the Italian restaurant also does a Thanksgiving meal, then Chez Philippe does one. I had such a hard time deciding which one to book, I decided to choose based on Yelp reviews of the restaurants themselves. I made the right choice! Would do this again in a heartbeat. We had a lovely afternoon "high tea" experience. Everything was above and beyond my expectations. Those scones are amazing!! Light and fluffy and warm. The chocolate Chai tea is worth the visit!. Thanks to the staff, who were professional, warm and funny. Love it. read more

My wife and I came here for valentine's day. We arrived early and received a couple's booth that was very romantic and comfortable. I had flowers delivered to the restaurant that I have forgotten but the staff there were competent and reminded me of the flowers that were delivered and brought it to the table. The entrees that evening was smooth, a perfect blend of savory and sweet, and cooked to perfection. The chef created an amazing menu. I'm very glad we found this gem here in Memphis.
