Wow. Cute, intimate spot where you either make a reservation or sit at the bar. Happy hour keeps the cost very reasonable, and the quality of the food is better than 98% of where I've been in Memphis. Let's talk about drinks though, Estrella Galicia Spanish beer and unique cocktails that are balanced, but leave a lasting impression. Did I mention basque cheesecake? I'm happy to eat or drink here.

First time visiting here and now this place will be a regular spot. Got seated quickly (we did have a reservation) and Matt was super great and helpful. We got two sangrias, the soup of the day, fried calamari, and different tapas. When I say everything was amazing, everything was. Nice place with a great vibe. The place is bigger than it looks from the outside. There is only street parking so be prepared for that.

Tónica is okay. Not bad not great. Their tapas are great! The entrée is not great! It is probably the worse paella that I ever had. It was wet almost soupy smushy smushy mush. Great cocktail and good atmosphere. They mess up one of the order and they fixed right away fantastic service.

I honestly can't say I agree with my fellow reviewers. Having spent time in Spain, we love tapas, and this place was one we'd been wanting to try for awhile. Romantic & intimate?? Not by a long shot! The acoustics are terrible and we had to shout to hear each other. The food is just average. I do love a dedicated spot on the menu for Gin & Tonics, and the drinks themselves were very good. We got a good chuckle at the end of the evening when our cute little server came to tell us about the dessert offerings. One was Basque Cheesecake. She asked if we knew what "basque" meant, and my husband answered that it is a region in Spain. She said, " nope!" and proceeded to tell us about the cheesecake. There is nothing here that would entice us to return.

The food was great other than the salad, which was extremely small and disappointing for $15. Our server was fast and friendly. The restaurant was also pretty loud for the amount of people that were in there. Overall we greatly enjoyed our food, and will be back

The Memphis Supper Club's debut restaurant. What we found at Tonica was magical. An incredible wait staff first of all. They were BUSY but our food and drinks came out very quickly and our server killed it. The food was delicious. Very flavorful, very eclectic. Certainly something for everyone. Loved my drink, too, gin and tonic reeeemix. The bathroom was very cute, too.

Tonica's downtown restaurant opened just 2 weeks ago. We just finished a fabulous meal there tonight and Ai wanted to give them 5 stars. The restaurant is beautiful, the menu has something for everyone (my wife is picky) - and the food is great. Best of all it is on Front Street behind the Orpheum and the Halloren Center - and walking distance to the Grizzlies games.

Patatas Bravas - this was by far my favorite tapas of the night 100%

this was a tasty meal that my wife and I both enjoyed, we will definitely be back, except every dinner we pay for nowadays I'm reminded of the constant debasement of the US dollar and the purchasing power of our money being flushed down the toilet, but the food was quite tasty, and lovely cocktails were a nice distraction from macroeconomic turmoil and the looming end of our long-term debt cycle. ps my wife loves when I leave reviews like this.

Eh... this place is gonna make me skip way ahead in my review to-do's... mostly because we were having a perfectly 4-star evening until they served us paella mush-mush. I mean you only have two entrees on the menu, you can't mess up your only other entree this badly. Absolutely unacceptable... Paella mush-mush.

The atmosphere was very intimate, great for a romantic evening. 5/5 for ambiance. We ordered coquetas, papas bravas, lamb skewers, and sangria (my favorite thing ordered). Overall it was enjoyable and unlike any other restaurant in Memphis. I know they are supposed to be tapas, but the portions did feel a bit small (mainly the croquetas, which were my favorite food ordered). I would not order papas again. 4/5 The service was great. 5/5

Loved the location and decor. Staff was pleasant but I wish she would have offered more of an experience through explanation of menu items. Black mountain had my favorite distillery "Rock Town - LR Arkansas" liquor in it. However it was underwhelming. I'll definitely be back to try more items in the future.

We love everything about Tonica - the food, the staff, the ambiance...everything! We come often for brunch and just love it! Lisa, Matt, Hannah, all of the staff treat us like family. We are pretty much creatures of habit and get the same things and they always remember our order. My husband gets either the shrimp and grits or the American breakfast with sausage AND bacon, because, well...why not? I always get the pan con tomate and breakfast potatoes. The toasts have a tomato garlic topping and are delish! The potatoes are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Yum! I always get the mimosa with a splash of grapefruit juice and my husband always gets the spicy Bloody Mary! It comes with a variety of house pickled veggies that I usually swipe. Dinner is also always fabulous! They have the best (and biggest) gin and tonics. My husband gets the gin raw which is more like a traditional gin and tonic and I get the one with the grapefruit soda or the newest one called the tanqueray Sevilla with clementine! Soooo good. We always get a variety of the tapas. We share some and some are just for for each of us . I am vegetarian and my husband is gluten-intolerant so it's perfect for us. We like the chickpeas with spinach and the patatas bravas to share. I could eat the patatas bravas every day! They are crispy potatoes in a spicy sauce with a drizzle of garlic aioli. Yum! My husband gets either the garlic shrimp or the pork tenderloin with salsa verde (which is one of the best he's ever had). He raves about both. I get the pan con tomate which is different from the brunch version with grated tomato on top. It's super fresh and on garlic toast. We have gone with friends who have tried a variety of other options and no one has ever gotten something they didn't love. Would highly recommend!

The female bartender was on it--friendly, fast, and she introduced me to my new signature drink, the Hold On To Your Britches. If you like a sweet cocktail, prepare to fall in love. I only needed a small bite, so I tried the grilled cheese... and honestly, it was silly good. The kind of good that ruins all future grilled cheeses. Trust me: get it. Visit #2: Stopped in just for drinks. Still good, but service was slooooow. I would've ordered another round, but eventually tapped out. Visit #3: Visited for Downtown Dining Week. The Caesar salad was basically lettuce in a monologue--no cheese, no croutons, just lonely leaves in dressing. Entrées tasted good but were tiny. My pasta was so spicy I couldn't finish it, but the short ribs with mashed potatoes were legitimately delicious. When I go back for visit #4 (and I will), I'm sticking with what BarWare does best: that fruity cocktail and the holy-grail grilled cheese. The ambiance and seating options are too good to stay away, even if the service and a couple dishes miss the mark now and then.

The lamb sliders remain my go-to. They're consistently juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly every time. Paired with the crispy fries, it's a meal that never disappoints. This visit, I ordered a Sidecar, but the bartender didn't have every ingredient needed for the traditional recipe. Instead of saying no, they created their own twist--and it was absolutely delicious. Sometimes improvisation pays off, and this cocktail was proof. The salmon was also excellent. I ordered it prepared the original way instead of the new menu version that includes Brussels sprouts, and it was exactly what I was craving. One of the highlights of the visit was an unexpected surprise from our waiter, who brought us a sample of their avocado ice cream. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was creamy, smooth, and surprisingly delicious. It was a thoughtful gesture that added to an already great dining experience. The only disappointment? They no longer offer the flight sampler. I was genuinely sad to see it gone because it was one of my favorite ways to experience several menu items in one visit. Overall, Babalu continues to deliver excellent food, attentive service, and outstanding drinks. Even with the flight no longer available, it's still one of my top recommendations in Memphis. 5/5 Stars - Consistent quality, excellent hospitality, and a place I'll gladly keep returning to.

I'm normally don't choose feta on dishes but it was mild (not salty) and a perfect refreshing combo with the watermelon, olive oil, and add fresh cracked pepper. SOUP FLIGHT $14: Lobster bisque, She Crab (immature Blue female crab incl roe typically though this has no bright orange color) and Gumbo with rice. ENTREE FLIGHT $16 Quail+$19 Redfish+$28 Elk Tenderloin When customizing your flight as I did the small plate price applies. Quail alone was filling, deboned in middle breast and thigh, as it's sweet spiced Creole stuffed and you get mini legs and wings to gnaw on. Like mini Thanksgiving. Took half home and actually ate on 'Flight' Home lol, it was just as tasty and far better than the pretzels haha! LA Redfish had a nice buttery panfried crusted and moist inside about 4oz with southern cheesy ham risotto topped with crab meuniere/browned butter. Elk Tenderloin medium rare as ordered, again great char, was naturally lean and tender, very tasty. A first for me, I would order over a regular steak tenderloin and only 1/2 fat! Killer deal :) Mac with asparagus spear was a tasty pairing. When server tells you 2-3oz Flight servings, in your mind it seems small but these were generous portions and easily fill you. I would share this after a salad or soup next time ;) Older menus point to the even more exotic ostrich, and Kangaroo loin, wow! But with Boar, Bison, Quail, Flounder, and Elk as current options, you can definitely dance around your less traveled palate. Definitely would return next time in Memphis and hunt down those exotics! Downed the hatch with a VINO Bel Glos FLIGHT Pinot Noir $18 spans the 3 premier cool climate CA AVAs-- Southern (Santa Maria Clark & Telephone) Central (Santa Lucia Balade) and Northern (Russian River Dairyman) liked this best but all deep rubys, cherry plum, some vanilla and spice. Very enjoyable flight. A shot of straight Sazerac Rye $10 and $4 Sweet Tea rounded off the table. Of course the guys went full hog entree, Shrimp & Grits $32 was the weakest of the plates as the shrimp were peeled and boiled? vs a more flavorful char & flavor or a spiced shell-on shrimp. Hubby was disappointed preferring my home made NoLo version. BIL's Veal Scalloppini $30 lemon caper butter and parm orzo, veggies really pleased him. It was more ordinary for my palate. All so stuffed thus passed on dessert but BIL took Key Lime Pie to go $7.50 reporting it was great next day. Server was attentive and friendly. Could use brushing up on menu, I had to look up the She Crab and Wine regions after asking. Waiting for a giant Fresh Pepper grind is a pain when it got busy, eventually brought us small grinder set to us. All the prices are very reasonable for the quality, white tablecloth ambience, elegant dining room with giant chandelier and darker woods while well lit with an upstairs tabled loft (although drab bathrooms could use some sprucing) downtown, AND importantly Valet parking, makes dining here such a breeze. Sidewalk patio for fair weather days too. Take FLIGHT and dine here, it'll make your girls giddy, Imma still flying high on my dining memories.

The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!

This is the chef's elevated take on his mother's fish and chips, and it had a nice balance of oil and salt. * Dessert: Finished with a strawberry ice cream terrine and a decadent six-layer carrot cake that was moist, intense, and packed with pistachio crème. * We had a robust 2015 St. Emilion with a medium/heavy body, nice tannins, and age! THE SERVICE * The service was highly attentive, friendly, and earns a solid 4 stars. Sam, the sommelier, was knowledgeable and shared his insights on the pairings (he noted the 3rd and 4th courses were his personal favorites). Special thanks to Daisy for helping us with our first visit, walking us through the tasting courses, and recommending local places. * Because the restaurant ambitiously rotates its tasting menu every 2-3 weeks, it is harder for the staff to keep on top of the tasting menu details (compared to their regular menu items). OVERALL Overall, a fantastic 4-star experience. The culinary creativity and the beautiful dining room make it highly recommended!
