Place is cool but the flow of traffic is weird. Walked in and couldn't find a hostess cause there's no hostess area. I asked for a MW steak it came MR. I sent it back and it came back well done. The fries however were my biggest issue. They were supposed to come with Parmesan and a chili oil. I can see and taste the Parmesan but not a hint of chili oil. They also came out cold and are more like potato sticks than French fries. The steak is literally maybe about 4oz but it is on the tapas menu so that was to be expected. Service is cool. I honestly can't say I agree with my fellow reviewers. Having spent time in Spain, we love tapas, and this place was one we'd been wanting to try for awhile. Romantic & intimate?? Not by a long shot! The acoustics are terrible and we had to shout to hear each other. The food is just average. I do love a dedicated spot on the menu for Gin & Tonics, and the drinks themselves were very good. We got a good chuckle at the end of the evening when our cute little server came to tell us about the dessert offerings. One was Basque Cheesecake. She asked if we knew what "basque" meant, and my husband answered that it is a region in Spain. She said, " nope!" and proceeded to tell us about the cheesecake. Not bad, but nothing to rave about. Service is really great and the interior and outdoor patio are nice spaces to dine in. Vibe is great. Food is pretty average, but probably one of the better places to go in Memphis. I like that there is now a tapas style restaurant in the city, though, so that's a plus. My 4 star rating is pretty generous if we're rating only food. A lot of the dishes were pretty salty, like how most dishes in the south are flavored, so it makes it hard to appreciate the true flavor of the meats and veggies. Costillas de cerdo and gambas al ajillo were like this, though the meat was decently cooked. Overall, if you do get a chance to try tonica, I'd recommend getting 1-2 meat dishes and 1-2 soup/salad items to balance out the meal. I didn't like the sunday brunch as much as the dinner menu. Crepes were wayyyy too salty. They have a different menu, so it's more american brunchy style than tapas. read more

We love everything about Tonica - the food, the staff, the ambiance...everything! We come often for brunch and just love it! Lisa, Matt, Hannah, all of the staff treat us like family. We are pretty much creatures of habit and get the same things and they always remember our order. My husband gets either the shrimp and grits or the American breakfast with sausage AND bacon, because, well...why not? I always get the pan con tomate and breakfast potatoes. The toasts have a tomato garlic topping and are delish! The potatoes are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Yum! I always get the mimosa with a splash of grapefruit juice and my husband always gets the spicy Bloody Mary! It comes with a variety of house pickled veggies that I usually swipe. Dinner is also always fabulous! They have the best (and biggest) gin and tonics. My husband gets the gin raw which is more like a traditional gin and tonic and I get the one with the grapefruit soda or the newest one called the tanqueray Sevilla with clementine! Soooo good. We always get a variety of the tapas. We share some and some are just for for each of us . I am vegetarian and my husband is gluten-intolerant so it's perfect for us. We like the chickpeas with spinach and the patatas bravas to share. I could eat the patatas bravas every day! They are crispy potatoes in a spicy sauce with a drizzle of garlic aioli. Yum! My husband gets either the garlic shrimp or the pork tenderloin with salsa verde (which is one of the best he's ever had). He raves about both. I get the pan con tomate which is different from the brunch version with grated tomato on top. It's super fresh and on garlic toast. What a trendy and lovely little restaurant! Don't underestimate this either, what tonica packs in beautiful and modern aesthetics- it also packs in its very delicious tapas and drinks. I would absolutely come back and hope to become a regular. We mixed and matched varied orders of tapas including: + fried potatoes in aioli and spicy sauce (patatas bravas) + croquettes with serrano ham (croquetas de jamon serrano) + bread with tomato paste (pan con tomate) + fried pork belly (chicharron) + chicken wings (aliutas de pollo) + lamb skewers (brochetas de cordero) All of the tapas were simply amazing- rich taste, savory, filling, in overall *very* good. I would re-order all of these again, except the chicken wings and lamb skewers. The chicken wings tasted good, however, we are in Memphis and competition for delicious chicken wings is stiff. I also don't think chicken wings is something this Spanish restaurant is specializing in. The lamb skewers were absolutely delicious, however, the serving size (literally bite sized), for the price ($15) felt pretty high. Other than that, I can't wait to try out other tapas and re-order these- especially the croquettes and chicharron. As for the drinks, tonica is clearly a gin & tonic house. I ordered a roku Suntory and a spiced Bombay and apart from being beautifully crafted, both drinks were strong. I preferred the Suntory, but I noticed almost everyone in the restaurant was ordering the spiced Bombay. I came here on a date night and still think this is a great date night spot but it's also absolutely perfect for a girls' night out. Parking is easy to find. The food here is amazing! The gazpacho and grilled mushroom were delicious. The mushrooms were definitely the best mushroom dish I have ever tasted, and the paella snd white sangria were delectable! If this review was based solely on food, I'd 'd give a solid five stars. Unfortunately the noise in the restaurant was unbearably loud. There was lively live music, but I could barely hear it over the din of diners talking. My dinner companion and I had to yell to hear each other over the noise and we both left feeling like we'd been at a rock concert. It seems like this could be remedied with a ceiling treatment or other noise absorbing measures. I'd love to back and try more of their incredible food and drinks, but I won't do so unless something is don to dampen the noise. read more

I really liked this restaurant. The idea of a meal made totally up of tapas is a great idea. For our group we ordered a bunch to share. This included Croquetas De Jamon Serrano, Octopus, Patatas Bravas, Pimientos Albondigas De. Corero, Gambas Garbanzos, Grilled Bread and several others. Favorites were the octopus (has a very nice spice kick), pork tenderloin, lamb meatballs, gazpacho and garbanzos. The drinks were okay, but not great, including the sangria and a strange drink called an Everything The Light Touches which was not what was expected. Expected something close to an old fashioned and it is actually more of a desert drink with lots of cream and little bourbon flavor at all. What was good from a drink standpoint was the wine list. We had the Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra, and it was excellent, especially for the price. From our group experience, skip the drinks, get a bottle of Spanish wine and you will be much happier and spend less. This is not your typical everybody get an entree restaurant, which makes it a great change of pace. Really liked it. One added complement for our server Chablis. One member of our party is allergic to garlic. Chablis made it a point to get the information on every item that either did not contain garlic or that garlic was in the sauce and could be served on the side. This made it a great experience for our no garlic friend as well. read more

It is a bit pricy, especially for the portions, but it's a must-try. Both sangrias are very interesting and unique. Perfect place with to grab some drinks and a bite with your girl friends or even a date night, but I went to check it out with my dad and we had fun too! We had the Gazpacho, Croquetas de jamón serrano, Brochetas de cordero, and Chicharron. All were great, but the Brochetas de cordero (lamb skewers) were definitely our favorite-must try! I also loved the Croquettes de jamón serrano. Mostly a tapas and cocktails menu. The drinks were awesome! My dad had the ginraw and said it was the best gin & tonic he's ever had.
