I've ordered takeout from here several times and they do not disappoint. Authentic Chinese food, no frills, just good food.

This is the go-to place for ordering Chinese food at work (near restaurant in Reston area). (Would also be my go-to when not at work if it were a little closer.) We've placed small orders and also much larger orders - they always get it correct. The delivery is fast - even in some of the bad snow storms we've had, they still deliver well within 30 minutes. I always get the chicken w/ broccoli and fried rice lunch special - so delicious! The chicken isn't "chunks", but more of the thin filet pieces. The roll that comes with the lunch special is a vegetable spring roll, as far as I can tell. I've also got their sweet and sour chicken in the past, and it is really delicious as well. It comes with plenty of sweet & sour sauce, and the chicken is nicely breaded and good size. I love this place. I can't order from most other places because Chen's has seriously spoiled me. read more

I've had other restaurants in the area and this by far is my favorite Chinese food spot. It's quick, it's tasty and definitely hits the spot when you have that Chinese food craving. The portion sizes are huge for the price. I always get the dumplings, crab ragoons and lo mein and are never disappointed ! read more

I've tried this place 3 times only because one lady I work with has occasional asks if anyone wants to get in on a deliver order. Every time I get something, I'm disappointed and sorry I ordered. The seasonings are so far off the norm that I can't bring my self to ever eat it again. I've eaten a lot of Chinese in my life from numerous places around the country, and believe me I know the flavors can be a little different but not where you couldn't eat it, it was so bad. So I've tried the shrimp fried rice, the egg foo young, and now I thought, okay, how badly can they screw up Chicken Teriyaki on a stick. Still trying to figure out if they know where they can at least find a bottle of "Teriyaki" in the grocery store? It had absolutely NO Teriyaki flavor at all and it was deep fried. After reading all the other reviews, I thought it was time to try a new place for Chinese food. Big mistake! The food was awful! I ordered the chicken noodle soup, beef chow fun, and vegetable lo mein. The noodles were soggy, the vegetables were soggy and I almost choked on the beef, it was so tough. The lo mein was completely flavorless and soggy. I threw everything away! A total waste of $35!! Not to mention there was so much sodium in the food, my face looked puffed up like a blowfish the next day!!! I'll go back to my old standbys. read more

This place is really good. It has a family feel to it as there is a little Asian grandma in the back cooking all the food. The General Tso's is pretty tasty and the rest of the meals I got were good. I only do pickup as it's pretty close to where I live, so I have not tried the delivery service. read more

Chen's Kitchen is the classic Chinese take away place. Every time I have picked food from here, the quality and taste had been excellent. Their Seafood fried Rice is amazing, so is their Shrimp Lo Mein. All traditional dishes are excellent especially Kung Pal. read more

The food was great the delivery guy was extremely rude. He couldn't find his way to the house, so I explained to him which street he needed to turn to; as he arrived he started his drama queen fit about how I never told him the street name. He kept on nagging, had the nerve to ask for a tip after been disrespectful. It's all on him the reason I give a poor review to this place. read more

I've never had anything bad here - super consistent, very fast, and big portions. The lady who takes the orders and the man who delivers are quite possibly the sweetest people in the world, which is why I want to vote them up. Hot and Sour soup is wonderful - lately I've been addicted to the Singapore Style Rice Noodles and Moo Shu beef or chicken (get extra pancakes as it's a lot of food). When rating Chinese food, remember a few things: 1. Don't expect Pad Thai to be good (it's a Chinese restaurant?), 2. It's a Chinese restaurant in America - it's going to be Americanized to appeal to the customer base. 3. If your go to is Crab Rangoon or Egg Foo Young, you shouldn't write reviews for Chinese restaurants. Go to the mall and get dinner there instead. read more

Ordered take out from here. Used the beyond menu app to order online and it was easy and efficient. The food here is better than most places around the area that l I have experienced. I ordered the sesame chicken, triple delight, and fried rice lunch special and they all tasted really good. The spring rolls that comes along with the lunch special was crispy and tasteful. It actually even contained meat, unlike other places that fills them up with cabbage. I will definitely order here again for lunch! read more

Chinese Food is good and consistent. JUST AVOID the Pad Thai, I ordered it once and it was a BIG mistake. I could not eat and keep it down. I have standards but when worst comes to worst I don't like to waste food so I can eat almost anything as long as its not rotten/rotting... but I couldn't with this dish. The cook has no idea on how to make pad thai and they need to take it out of their menu. It was a glob of noodles that wasn't only bland but had a weird taste to it. We always order delivery from Chen's. The lady who takes the order remembers we usually order vegetarian. Once we had someone visiting and ordered something with meat. She called us back to make sure that's what we wanted. Very cool. The driver remembers us too, always very happy to see us, shakes our hand... very pleasant. The food is always good. Veggies are fresh and crispy the sauces are spot on. Nothing ever too greasy unless your chosen path is to go with something fried. I can't recommend anything specific because we always modify everything such as "szechuan beef... no beef, substitute dried bean curd". The back of the menu has a section called "Chinese Specials" (not to be confused with "House Specials" that's on the inside). This section has some authentic dishes that are not your typical Americanized Chinese cuisine. We've tried them all in the Reston/Herndon area and think Chen's is as good as it gets. Compared to NYC or SF Chinese restaurants... don't compare because we're not there. read more

Yes, this place far exceeds expectations in this area. Over the years they have been amazingly reliable, and always super pleasant to deal with. The food has ranged from decent to really surprisingly good. I guess it depends on who's cooking. On the basis of my most recent experience, I would say now is a good time to go, order out or get delivery. Two days ago I had delivered Singapore Noodle, Sichuan Green Beans, Crispy Salted Fish Filets (Chinese Menu), Spicy Pickled Chinese Cabbage, and a free order of Chicken Fried Rice. The first four items were outstanding, the best ever I've had in 10 years from Chen's. The fried rice was OK. I wanted to write them and tell them, but their website doesn't invite that. (Works well for ordering though.) The noodle soups are (N1 - N6) are good anytime, but especially welcome this time of year; better to eat on site than off though. So, very good food, great people and service, large portions, high value. I only wish they had some real Chinese vegetables (greens) cooked Chinese style. Then I would give it 5 stars (grading on a curve of course -- this isn't Queens, NY or SF Chinatown, or even Rockville!) Hell, if they would add some Ma La dishes to the menu, I would petition Yelp for 6 stars. read more

I just finished my first meal from this place. What great food - the best I've had anywhere in the Reston, Herndon, Ashburn area. That is quite a compliment given how much I love Chinese food and the number of restaurants I have tried throughout Northern Virginia. I ordered the kung pao chicken and the beef with garlic sauce. What amazing rich and satisfying flavors, and a surprisingly good value too. I officially declare this my new favorite Chinese restaurant. Tomorrow's chore will be to find and join a gym. I was very surprised by the reviews for this place. It was nothing more then a regular chinese carryout. It was not bad at all but absolutely nothing special about this place. I would not go out of my way to eat here but if i lived close by I would eat here from time to time. The place is fairly spacious but it's definitely not worth eating there since the atmosphere is old and dingy. It is very cheap though so you're definitely not over paying here. read more

I've been ordering regularly from Chen's for years and they have always been pretty consistent. Their service is impeccable as special orders from me all the time never upset them and they always deliver on time. If you want true AUTHENTIC chinese food, go for the soup section and the stew beef soup is tender and delish! The Taiwan Style rice noodle is my favorite though. All in all, they have reasonable prices, fast delivery and prompt/polite service so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them as I hope they'll continue to stay in business! read more

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. I moved to the Herndon area recently, so I'm looking for a go-to Chinese takeout spot. This definitely isn't it. I had the General Tso's, the "meat" dumplings, and the crab rangoon. General Tso's is my typical order at any Chinese take-out place; I know when it's good and when it's bad. This wasn't the worst General Tso's I've ever had, but it certainly wasn't the best. Your typical Tso's flavor was there, though slightly off, and there was simply way too much sauce. That being said, it was the best of the three things I ordered. Next come the meat dumplings. The meat, which I assume is ground pork, was simply flavorless. Flavorless meat makes for a flavorless dumpling. To add salt to the wound (but not to the dumpling, which it probably could have used), the dough encasing the meat was cooked in WAY too much oil. These are supposed to be pan-fried dumplings, but this was like a deep-fry gone wrong. The dough was thick and soaked in oil, and oil lined the bottom of the take-out tray. Just couldn't eat them all. Might as well chug the bottle of vegetable oil on the counter. Last and probably least, the crab rangoon. Just by looking at them you could tell they had been sitting out for hours; the "crispy" bread looked like it was practically stale, and by touch it was evident that they were kept no more than lukewarm in whichever vat they came from. The filling wasn't bad, I'll give them that...but it's pretty hard to screw that up. Cream cheese, imitation crab, scallions, garlic. Will not return to Chen's Kitchen. read more

Went there once and for the last time. I ordered Sesame Chicken and Combination fried rice. They charged me about 7 $ too much. I only realized when I got to work and looked at the bill. The food wasn't that great either. The Sesame Chicken was not cooked well enough. And the chicken pieces were big and with fat layers inside. Except for the House Special, most dishes can be ordered small or large -- not lunch or dinner portions dictated by the time of day -- a good idea. Spring rolls were good and crunchy and not at all oily. The General Tso's chicken was OK. But the hot and sour soup lacked flavor as did the combo fried rice, which was also oily. I was really craving general tso's chicken so I looked up a place to go pick up something and found this. Found out you can order online ahead of time which was perfect. This place is the best small Chinese/American restaurant in the zip code 20190 and 20191, in my opinion. My co-workers and I ordered lunch there for delivery. Singapore noodles had a nice kick, crispy shredded chicken was so good. Everyone liked their lunch from Chen's kitchen. Prices are reasonable, too! The foods don't seem to be as authentic as places in NY City Chinatown or Philidelphia's Chinatown. However, compared to other Chinese/American restaurants around, this place easily beats them all. There are a few tables and the place is bare. Don't even expect any ambience. Just go there for the foods. read more

Delivery took over an hour so everything was cold and had to be reheated in the microwave. We experienced a similar problem with Tara Thai. Perhaps an hour long wait is common practice - though we live right up the street. Come on people, get more drivers - geez. The "vegetarian" wonton soup appeared to have pork in the wontons (or some other strange brown meat-like substance). I guess the vegetarian part is the flavorless water with vegetables floating inside. The [free] egg rolls, beef lo mein, and vegetable moo shoo was decent. Overall a disappointing experience. Authentic Mom and Pop place. Cozy family run kitchen. They serve you on paper plates to save on dishes. Personally I find that cool. And now for the food. Just way. I have made a 5 year quest of making the perfect authentic Hot and Sour Soup and this place nails it! The irreplaceable bamboo shoot flavour and the cloud ear fungus. I also had the schezuan beef and fantastic. The thick sweet smoky hot flavor with a mound of fluffy white rice. My guest had the General Tso. Just wow. Spicy sticky sweet sauce with crisp not soggy white meat chicken as Americans love white meat. Do yourself a favor and go now. Right now. Don't go anywhere else. read more
