Ambiance was cute and great service Tom yum noodle soup $18- It was good but sort of lack the strong Thai flavor and aroma, but I like that she was able to accommodate me with bean sprout instead of noodle since I am on a diet. Had a dinner before movie and it was very enjoyable. The soup was very good and hearty ans tasty and the beef dish was very good as well- maybe little bit sweet. Service was quick and the servers do ask frequently if you need help. The store is connected to the movie theater and has outside seating as well- but haven't seen people using it though. I was originally to be seated at a raggedy table in the corner--nope. I asked to be moved, and they did so with no issue, which I appreciated. I asked for the lunch special and requested the soup while I figured out what I really wanted. The soup of the day was lemongrass--pretty traditional. After I placed my order, the soup came out right away, which was fine... I still could've changed my mind....right? Tell me why the soup had no flavor. None. I've been to Thailand multiple times, so I was expecting at least something authentic. I ended up ordering the Basil Fried Rice with a fried egg on top. They said the egg was an extra $3--no problem, we have money. I sent the soup back and the woman did not look pleased. I asked for spring rolls instead. Let me just say: those spring rolls are never worth $11.99 unless it's during the lunch special. I also ordered three spicy Basil Fried Rice dishes with crispy duck. Mistakes were made. My friend and I went to Nan Thai for lunch. She was craving crab rangoon and Nan is her favorite spot to go in the Herndon area! Great experience overall, we both decided to go out of our comfort zone and try something new. The staff were patient with us deciding and friendly and the ambience was very cute! Had a garden vibe to it with flower and vines throughout the space. Appetizer: Crab Rangoon - Unfortunately I don't have it pictured since we were just busy enjoying had a crispy flaky outside and a tasty crab cream flavor inside and paired perfectly with a sweet and sour chili sauce. Wish it was on the menu though, if my friend hadn't been there we wouldn't have known it was an option. 5/5 Main Courses: Salmon Panang - The curry was a tasty red sauce that had a bit of a kick to it but was toned done nicely with the sweet coconut flavor. The salmon was crispy which made it pair well with the curry. I was initially fearful that salmon and curry wouldn't pair, but the crispiness of the salmon made it work well. They only critic I would have was although I love broccoli and it tasted good, it wasn't very cohesive with the overall dish. It seemed like it was randomly placed. 4/5 Drunken Noodles w/ Pork Belly - My friend really enjoyed the noodles with the pork belly. She decided to add the pork belly to the drunken noodles instead of chicken and I think it was a good choice. Many Thai places I have been to don't offer that so I loved that add on! We came to celebrate a birthday and wanted some good and authentic Thai food. And Nan Thai didn't disappoint! The food is very yummy and service was amazing!! There were only two people taking orders and serving and somehow they managed it, honestly better than some places that have many staff. Both people served and came by to check on us multiple times throughout our meal. And I have to mention that when we first arrived, we were asked if the temperature was ok (we had baby with us). Never been asked that at a restaurant before, and I appreciate that they are also considerate of the little ones. Everything we ordered was delicious, although portions could have been bigger. Fried Calamari - Super crispy and aromatic and sauce it came with complemented it very well. Would order again. Shrimp Kapow - This was recommended to us, not sure if it's on the menu but it's one of the best dishes we had. The shrimp was crispy and the flavor is amazing. Recommend! Fried Flounder - This item is not on the menu and was at market price, the wait for it was a bit long but when it came out, it was very delicious. The sauce it came with tastes like it has tamarind which brings a nice tangy and pleasant savory taste. Love it! If you love fried fish, you will love this. And the norm, we got a seafood fried rice and 2 kinds of noodles Drunkun Noodle and Pad See Eaw. It was all very tasty. We had a brought a cake which we'd asked for them to hold for us, and at the end without request, they surprised and brought out the cake, even dimmed the lights and sang happy birthday for us. Sone of the best Thai food I've had in the DC area. (I'm a dual citizen of Thailand and the U.S., and lived in Bangkok for a while). This place is legit. A little pricey, but worth it. I could tell from the pics that this place was less Americanized than others, and I was right. Apparently they sometimes have steamed chili lime sea bass on special and I wish they had that this night, but I wasn't disappointed by what we got. Taste: We got the soft shell crab curry (pad phong garee), the glass noodle salad (yum woon sen), and crispy duck drunken noodles (pad khee mao). I hate it when Thai-American restaurants add bell peppers to dishes, and they did add bell peppers to the crab curry, but it was not noticeable, mainly as garnish which is fine. The soft shell crab was amazing, perfectly fried, still crispy under the curry, perfect spice level *chefs kiss.* The pad khee mao noodles were just right, not too thick, not mushy/easily falling apart, again no over use of bell peppers. They did use instead of and no fresh green peppercorns, but honestly where can you get real kaprao leaves in the US? Solid execution. Absolutely no complaints on the yum woon sen. Sour, spicy, salty, fresh. Experience: We sat immediately and service was good. They don't have a fountain yet still gave free can refills for Diet Coke. The staff was friendly and it was clear they have regulars who come in often. The decor is whatever, but the food was solid, so it doesn't matter. Mood Before/After: I was exhausted from traveling to and from Pittsburgh on the same day, but this picked me up really nicely. Fullness: Very full for three people. Good food and reasonable prices from this delicious restaurant. I ordered takeout, and it was prepared and delivered very quickly. I loved how massive the portion sizes are. The pad Thai and curry fried rice were huge, and though tasty, they were both a little dry. The chicken satay was good but for just four skewers and a bit pricy for just four of them. The mango with sticky rice for dessert was delicious and is what I love and live for. That is to say, if I go to a Thai restaurant for the first time, I'm getting this. And at Nan Thai, it's amazing. This dish at some places shows up with ground beef or somewhat dry dense rigid pieces. Here they're substantial, very juicy, and floppy. Absolutely delicious. Of course I've explored the menu and inquired how others enjoyed their meals. In my memory, everyone's left happy ... and often with a to-go box. The restaurant has outdoor seating on the walkway if the weather's good, but otherwise come inside for a more tropically styled bar/restaurant scene. I wasn't in the mood for an alcoholic beverage, but thankfully there were tons of boba options to my heart's delight! I felt like my drink was so much more fun than alcohol! (What am I saying?) We had a large, hearty meal here! Everything was quite delicious, and really fast service. Like we weren't even done with the appetizers and the entrees starting coming out one by one really quickly. Very fast service was much appreciated. Everything tasted fresh as well. I loved the appetizers - Kanom Jeeb, which I'd compare to the Chinese dish shumai. The tofu pad thai was pretty good, I've had more flavorful pad thai but overall it was good and the tofu was crispy! I'm not the biggest fan of Chicken Panang Curry in general but my boyfriend loves it and he was a big fan, and thought it tasted great ! We also ordered Crispy Duck Drunken Noodles - my favorite dish for sure. It was spicy but really good, noodles may have been over cooked cuz they were pretty soft but I still i liked, could also be due to having a lot of sauce which I'm not complaining about. The crispy duck was amazing and so so good. Overall, pretty decent Thai food. We drove about 50 minutes to try it out especially because we were drawn by their very active social media presence. Another Nova Thai flop for the books: It was a beautiful day for a date with my wife. It's like unwinding after a long week at work. This restaurant is conveniently located near an AMC theater, making it a nice choice for a quick snack before or after a movie. That's exactly what we did. My personal experience with Thai food in Northern Virginia has been mediocre at best. And this eatery did not disappoint us. All of the dishes we ordered seemed to have a lot of brown sugar or teriyaki sauce in them. We requested level 4 of their spicy scale, which ranged from 1 to 5, with 5 being the hottest. Our dinner was as sugary as McDonald's soft serve ice cream. If that's one of their hottest items, I can't imagine what their mild food tastes like. I'm not sure why they bother asking what level of spice I want if they're just going to smother the food in sugar. Isn't it normal to ask for spicy and get it? We split the zebb wings and basil bomb. Wings were not bad. However, Basil Bomb was a huge letdown. We didn't like the combination of chewy squid, dry-ish shrimp, and strange sauce. It was supposed to come with fish, but none were found. On the plate, our fishing method was unsuccessful! There was a lot of Basil leaf, as the name suggests, but for some strange reason, we didn't smell it much. You should be able to smell it from miles away based on the amount of Basil leaf on the item, but sitting 1 ft away from it, we failed; or rather, the item failed us. The best Basil Fried rice in the Herndon and Reston area. I am a Thai food lover so I try all the Thai places in the area I live in. The basil fries rice here is really good. All the other Thai places (including the expensive ones) always dry out their basil fries rice and there isn't much flavor. But this place cooks the fried rice perfectly. The rice is browned, soft, and has a lot of basil flavor. The drunken noodles and curries are also very good here. Overall very good price and nice place to sit down and eat or get takeout. read more

I moved to Virginia Beach and been craving for pad thai specifically from this restaurant. I ordered shrimp pad thai and it tasted exactly how I remembered having it before I moved 4 years ago. They give you a good amount of shrimp, still has the poached tender flavor. Not dry tasting. I also love how there are ingredients like green onions, radish, tofu, eggs, peanuts giving the noodle dish more texture. I've been coming here for years and the new decorations are fantastic! The new murals and tropical designs are beautiful. The space is as clean as ever and the new menu additions are fantastic. They really upgraded their cocktail menu, but everything is still only $5 during happy hour! Tara Thai is not the first place that comes to mind when. I'm craving Thai food. I'm not sure why the bad reviews. I thought the food itself was quite decent. Service wasn't too bad as well. Being located inside the Worldgate Centre, you would think they're mostly busy around lunch time. But they were also busy around dinner time, with regulars whom the waitresses remember by name and favorite dishes. They have a list of $5 items (mostly appetizers) for happy hour. I like how they use noodles inside their spring rolls. It was a favorite among my picky toddler. The satay was also good as the chicken was flavorful and not dry. The pad see ew noodles with seafood had a burnt smell? It didn't bother me and still tasted good. The mussels were open, and the shrimp and scallops were cooked well. No complaints. Wow! I was surprised . . . by the food and service. I'll get to that in a minute. The only unexciting aspect is the ambiance, or lack of it. It's as if it's in a strip mall, though Worldgate is actually much bigger, a full-blown mall. But the restaurants that face the parking lot are typical for a shopping center. (And there are lots of restaurants, including some very good ones as well as some chains like Panera.) Anyhow, the inside was clean and sterile, but unexciting. No complaints, but nothing to write home about. I got there about 2:30. They have a special lunch menu served until 3 pm. Then the restaurant closes until 4 pm. (I don't know if you can order other menu items up until 3.) So I walked in and was the only customer. A server promptly came over to me and handed me a menu. She said they were still serving lunch. What would I like? I decided to take a chance and asked "What would you recommend?" Good restaurants and servers do make recommendations. Lesser ones respond with "It's all good" and leave it at that. Anyhow, my server did have a recommendation of sorts. She said their most popular dish was the Panang Curry. That sounded good (both the food and the recommendation), so I ordered it with pork. (Lots of choices of proteins: tofu, vegetables, chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, crispy pork belly, or crispy duck.) A guy brought me water and politely said that the kitchen closes at 3 pm. I said that I'd try to be out by then. He apologized and said that wasn't what he meant. I could stay as long as I wanted. It's just that if I wanted food after 3 pm, there wouldn't be anyone to prepare it. No problem. The lunch came with a soup and I didn't get its name. But the soup was excellent--spicy (but not overly so), tasty, and a lot of it. The Panang Curry was excellent and, again, a lot of it. The menu marks Panang Curry with one "chili" and that's about right. It was spicy, but not at all overwhelming. The menu also has a number of gluten-free and vegan offerings. The service was attentive without being annoying. And friendly. I'll definitely be back. read more

My family and I had dinner at this restaurant this evening. The food was awful. WE have enjoyed Thai food in Bangkok restaurants ranging from unpretentious street food all the way to fancy restaurants, and they were all extremely tasty, with aromatic herbs, neither undercooked nor overcooked, spiced just right, and served with a smile. This evening at Nan Thai Restaurant in Herndon, VA we ordered their salmon dinner, their shrimp in garlic sauce dinner, their beef dinner, and their tofu and vegetables dinner. The vegetables in all of them were not just undercooked but downright uncooked to the point of not being edible and tasting like cardboard. The sauces had copious amounts of high-caloric sweeteners, presumably to fool the palates of clients who did not know any better, and the presentation of all these dinners was totally uninviting and unappetizing. As a bare minimum, vegetables (carrots, broccoli, etc. should be cooked so as to be tender and not feel like cardboard, Aromatic herbs were totally missing. The shrimp were chewy and so was the beef. Service was equally bad: as an example. we asked for the spice tray, but it was never brought. Restaurant management must learn that most new patrons give just one chance to a new restaurant: if their food and service is poor, as was the case here, those patrons will never return and will advise their friends and associates not to go there. A net loss for every restaurant that treats patrons as if they are ignoramuses who don't know any better. The management and chef of Nan Thai restaurant need a remedial course in Thai cooking, preferably taught by even a street food Thai cook. What Nan Thai Restaurant served us was a disaster and we never plan to go back. read more

What we got ithis time iit was marinated sliced pork, dusted in flour , deep fried and stir fried in kapow sauce. You can't call this Crispy PorkBelly!!!! We eat thai food pretty regularly and one of our favourite thai restaurants is Tara Thai, Herndon. I texted in a request for Chicken with Broccoli for my daughter Iman and Seafood Kapow for me. Chicken with Broccoli is a "go to" for her and we (Wife and I) prefer my meals spicy. I arrived to pick up the order and took a peek inside to get my juices going. I noticed that the Seafood Kapow was not as I expected. Usually the seafood is in a container by itself and the steamed rice in a separate container. What I had here was instead the seafood and the rice cooked together like a Paella. I inquired and was told that this was a Seafood Kapow fried rice. The dish was filled with shrimp, squid, scallops and mussels. There was no egg in the meal. I decided to take it but thought I should order another item. I ordered a Kapow Seafood with steamed rice which was my norm. I got home and shared the incident with my wife. We gave it a try and result was amazing. We devoured the meal. We commented over and over how tasty the rice was,. The Jasmine rice picks up the flavour of the cooked seafood and holds it perfectly. The rice also soaks up the juice with the spicy peppers. Imagine a Thai Paella to get a good idea of this dish. It was the most pleasurable thai dish in a long time. We will most certainly order this meal the next time we visit Tara Thai Herndon. Pretty Good! Typhoon Shrimp Soup is similar to Tom Young Shrimp Soup but a bit sour. Pad Thai Shrimp Noodle is very tasteful w/ a bit more sweetness. Eggplant Sweet Basil is average w/ less flavor.
