Whenever I'm craving donuts, Duck Donuts is where I come. I try not to buy a dozen or half a dozen because I usually end up eating most if not all of them. There's nothing like freshly made hot Duck donuts. Have I mentioned you can customize each donut exactly the way you want? The flavor combinations are endless. See pics for details. We have been coming to this location for a while. The service is always pleasant. We are always served with a smile. The doughnuts are kinda small but delicious! My daughter and I come over to this location anytime she goes to the doctor's office, which is nearby. In the summer months, it can be a little warm in the store. We were excited to come and try "custom donuts", but the location was very underwhelming. It's a very old school donut shop vibe with unenthusiastic employees (more on that later). The menus were old and sticky. The tables not quite clean. The saving grace was the electronic self-service menu, which we opted for just because the employee didn't seem helpful. The menu was very clear and it was a pretty easy order process. Ok so why 2 stars? The pictured donuts look nothing like what we ordered. It's such a drastic difference from the size and shape of the donut to the decoration. And do you see how messy the custom donuts look? These unenthusiastic employees just showered these donuts with powdered sugar and way more than a "drizzle" of sauce. By the time we got home, our donuts were soggy from all the sauce. This was the first time having Duck Donuts. I couldn't pass up the Fall Favorites Dozen, so I ordered online to pick it up at a specific time the next morning. The next morning, I drove to Duck Donuts and arrived at 0900 as planned. There's plenty of parking! When I walked in, no one was there. I looked around and it seemed that the store could use some refreshing. I don't know how long the store has operated in that location, but it seemed like a long time. After a couple minutes, a worker walked in the front door, greeted me, and asked if I was there to pick up an order. I told her that I was and gave my name. She handed me a warm box of donuts with my ticket on top that had bits of icing on it. Upon arrival at home, I broke into the box and halved a few donuts to try. First, the doughnut was cooked to order so it was served warm, the bacon and maple reminded me of eating pancakes and bacon. Duck Donuts had been on my radar since I first moved to Reston over a year ago. They are a chain, but I'd never lived anywhere near one before. While the "made to order" concept was very intriguing, I didn't expect to love them. The donut glazes and toppings are fully customizable, but the donut itself is not. It is one type of batter, no flavor options, and you can't get them filled. For context, some of my faveourite donut chains are Krispy Kreme, and Winchell's Donuts. I also absolutely love Ronald's Donuts, located in Las Vegas, but they are not a chain. Some of my go-to's are glazed yeast donuts (especially the fresh hot ones you can get at Krispy Kreme when their "HOT" sign is on), blueberry cake donuts, chocolate cake donuts and filled dougnuts. Due to the singular type of donut availble at Duck Donuts, my expectations weren't set too high, yet I still managed to be dissapointed. FIrst off, what got me to finally try them was a promotion they were running for National Coffee Day. They were offering a free coffee with any donut purchase. Well, if you know me, you know I love coffee. I just couldn't pass this up! The frustrations began when I tried to place my order ahead of time for pick-up. This is my preferred method of ordering take-out, as it is more convenient for me, and often more convenient for the staff as well. On their Google review page, there is a link to order directly through Duck Donuts, and it says "no service fee". I clicked this option, entered my order, entered the promo code for the free coffee, no issues. Until I went to the check-out. Lo and behold, there was $1.00 service fee applied to my order. (see attached photo) This was hiccup number 1. I abandoned my cart and decided to go order in-person. After placing my order, the cashier informed me I needed the app for the free coffee. Their advertisement did not indicate this at all, in fact, it indicated very clearly that the app was not needed. I did inform the cashier. (see attached photo). Hiccup number 2. I went to sit down to download the app ( I REALLY wanted to try that cold brew with sweet cream, lol) It took about 10 minutes for it to download and install. Once it was ready, I got up to redeem the free coffee and pay for my order. I then sat down and waited for my donuts. It took about 10 minutes, which really isn't long at all, especially considering everything is made to order. However, I wasn't too thrilled about having to wait, simply because I already had to wait for the app to download, and I would have avoided waiting altogether if I had been able to place my order online like I orginally wanted to. When my donuts were ready I picked up the box at the pick-up counter and headed home. Without checking the box. Oops. I got home and opened the box, so excited to try my Pumpkin glazed donut with apple pie topping, streusel topping, and maple glaze. Let me tell you, when I opened the box and saw a chocolate apple mess in that box, I almost cried. Lol it seems so silly and I got over it pretty quick, but in that moment, I was so sad. I very rarely order chocolate anything, and I certainly wouldn't have ordered chocolate with that combo of flavors. I was already being a bit adventurous with the pumpkin flavor combos. Now...this last hiccup is partly on me. I had several opportunities to realize I wasn't getting a pumpkin donut. One, when the cashier rang up my order. Two, when I received my receipt. Three, when I received the actual donuts. I know better than to leave without checking...mistakes happen. In this case, I did receive what was rung up. It just wasn't, unfortunately, what I asked for. Had I been able to place my order online, this wouldn't have happened, as I would have been able to enter my customizations myself. The 2nd donut was exactly as I ordered it (Blueberry glaze, streusel, lemon drizzle) The glazes themselves were pretty good, other than the lemon (tasted artificial). I really liked the apple topping. The donut base was, unfortunately, not my cup of tea. While it was light and fluffy, it was oddly salty. I can see why their maple bacon donut is so popular...I defintely think their salty batter would work very well with those flavors. It just didn't work very well with the sweet toppings I chose. Interestingly enough, the streusel topping is more salty than sweet as well. Not salty in a good way like bacon would have been. Salty in a "why are you like this?!" kind of way. I didn't even drink the coffee. What my stars mean: 5 is outstanding, a must-experience, someplace I would bring/recommend to a tourist. 4 is great, someplace I would love to return again and again. Backup option to bring/recommend to tourists. 3 is good. Someplace I would return to if in the area. Not likely to reccomend to tourists, but possibly to a local. 2 is ok but only because it a great value, unique, and/or convenient. 1 means I would not return. read more

Love this place and it's a go-to to buy treats to share at work. Staff are friendly, good customer service , good food. However, it's losing a star because of the cleanliness of the facility. I was there today and used the restroom and saw this open vent on the ceiling FULL of dust and debris (see photo), In the dining area I noticed more on the vents on the ceiling, too. I feel bad for employees working here; think about what they're breathing in all the time. Hopefully this stuff isn't falling from the ceiling into the food, too. Store closes abruptly without any sort of communication- online order was placed and the employee walking out says "just cancel the order" after it was accepted and I was charged. There was no actual way to cancel the order and employee offered ZERO guidance on how to do so. This is completely unacceptable. Service at this particular restaurant had steadily gone down hill over the last 2 years and this marks a sharp downward turn. The concept of a made-to-order donut shop is rare and unique. Pros: the quality of the donuts - warm and fresh - are much different than that of Dunkin, and other competitors. Although some people may prefer their donut coating/topping having more of a hard crunch, rather than a soft one, it's definitely a different experience worth a try. Also, the prices are awesome and also superior to that of Dunkin and other competitors. Cons: I would say this place could use a revamp in branding. Perhaps the target market is strictly for little kids, but I see a much bigger market if they were to change up the colors/paints, tables, etc. to cater and get a much bigger consumer market. If rebranded correctly, this place could be a hybrid cafe pulling in people throughout the day. Lastly, not totally a "con" per se, but the customer service could be friendlier. On the flip side, I understand all employees are hands-on working on the donuts, so their focus is probably all on that; however, a simple "good morning", "how are you today", and a smile or two can easily be done. Their is the topping, or icing, then you can add toppings such as sprinkles, peanuts, Oreo pieces, or even bacon bits. It's been a while since I've been to this Duck Donuts. I couldn't even remember what the ordering process was, but it's easy to figure out. They make all the donuts fresh and they even have a seasonal selection! I went for the Harvest Selection with all types of limited time creations. I only gave it 3 stars because of the service. The guy working the counter looked like it was the last place he wanted to be. Looking around none of the other staff members even cracked a smile. I thought donuts shops are supposed to be happy places?! The worst part is that he charged me 3 times the price for what my order was supposed to be. I kept saying I ordered a dozen for $15.75. He just kept hitting keys and coming up with random prices. I thought he was a malfunctioning computer. Finally other team members came over and I paid the correct price. I recently moved to Herndon and have passed Duck Donuts daily on my walk on the Sugarland Run trail. I finally gave in and ordered 4 donuts for my family to sample - 3 Fall Favorites (Pumpkin Streusel, Coffee Cake, Cinnamon Roll) and 1 from the normal menu (French Toast). I downloaded the app and wanted to order ahead, but there didn't seem to be a way to order the Fall Favorites by themselves (only a half dozen or dozen assortment). I was able to scan the app to pay and got a Reward (free donut) since it was my first purchase. Our favorite by far was Coffee Cake followed by Cinnamon Roll. Pumpkin Streusel and French Toast were decent, but nothing special. I'll probably return again to try additional seasonal flavors. read more

This Duck Donuts is pretty consistent with the others in the DMV. If you desire a warm, cake donut and perhaps with some unique and seasonal flavors, Duck Donuts might be for you. The donuts are made on the spot so there are two kinds of experiences - you can eat them warm which many people do (in fact, many eat the donuts while in the shop or outside on the available seating) or you can let them cool and enjoy a traditional, room temperature donut that we're all accustomed to. I think they are notably one of few donut shops in the DMV specializing in cake donuts. Consistency is perhaps their shining star. Every time I visit a Duck Donuts the quality is consistent. Although a chain donut shop, they are pretty good. Give them a shot. read more

The DoorDasher left my donuts on the ground with the box open and no milks. They didn't even ring my doorbell. I called the location. They said I had to ask for a refund through DoorDash. Called DoorDash. DoorDash said they needed the OrderID. Called Duck Donuts back for the OrderID. DoorDash informed me that Duck Donuts had to process the refund. It was a big back and forth between calling Duck Donuts and DoorDash and no one wanted to accept responsibility. I called Duck Donuts one last time and spoke with the manager on duty. They said they would refund the order and that it would take two days. Ten days later, I called again because there has been no refund. I was told by the staff that they would contact the manager and have them refund me. It's two days later and no contact from the manager or refund processed. Why is it so hard to get customer service and a refund? I will be physically going to this location on Monday to speak with the management. I hate reviewing chains, but Duck Donuts knocks Dunkin Donuts every time for that special treat with a hole in the middle. What I love is the ability to watch, from start to finish, how the donuts are made. It is like watching poetry in motion, a dance so carefully rehearsed that if one part is off, the donut is ruined. Let me just say Homer Simpson would be proud of such a place. He would probably eat here every day! So would I, if I did not gain any weight as a consequence. The hours are great too! I have to admit that I was excited when Duck Donuts came to Herndon. I had heard great things. But after trying their donuts a few times, I am totally underwhelmed. The donuts are OK when they are hot, but disgusting once they have cooled. I just don't get the big deal other than the name. Who wouldn't want to eat a pastry named after adorable waterfowl. Ducks are cute, and definitely a better waterfowl naming choice than "Goose Donuts" or "Swan Donuts". That doesn't have the same ring to it. I want to point out that other animals are equally enticing in the pastry business. Think about how you react when someone says "does anybody want this extra bear claw?" Also, is a donut the same thing as a doughnut? I will give them kudos on one item they sell. The maple bacon donut, while still warm, is a real treat. This was my first time experiencing Duck Donuts. I picked them up for a volunteering crew. There was a line and a lot of confusion over making on a paper your order. I think there could be some improvements on the flow of people and where to place the papers and pencils for people to select their orders. It was hard figuring out where the lines started and people were trying to push through the table and line to get to the coffee. The smells were intoxicating! Freshly made fried donuts being made to order. Once I ordered the dozen of donuts and secured some coffee I was able to see the process of what makes Duck so much different than other places. They make a donut with the same batter and the toppings is what sets each type of donut apart. So depending on what you ordered you will get them iced in various different icings. Then the toppings are added on top of the icing. The employee's will call your order number and display the box to you so you can see the end result and ensure they got the order right. Then they finish off the package with a top and wish you a good day. I had to of course sneak a donut when I got into the car. It was still a lil bit warm which was amazing! I did the lemon and coconut donut and OMG the flavor in the donut itself was just so much better than the cake type donuts of dunkin donuts.
