I was in the area for work recently and stumbled across Duck Donuts. It was around lunch time but it wasn't busy. Service was quick and my order was ready quickly. I ordered an iced cold brew, which is served black. I'm not a big fan of black coffee but there was cream and sugar available to doctor it up. I ordered two donuts-one for now and one for later. I got the Strawberry Shortcake and S'mores. Both were delicious and fresh.
First of all, this place is worth going, and going repeatedly just for the customization. Donut is always a fried cake donut, but you pick icing, topping, and a drizzle (which can be any of the icings). Very fun, and my brother did an amazing job collecting all the orders the night before, keeping track, and then crossing them off as everyone snagged the correct creation. Donut itself is perfection. Light cake. Classic flavor. Well cooked without feeling dense or greasy. I combined lemon icing, streusel, and raspberry drizzle. Delightful! Sweet without being assaultive and distinct flavors without being overwhelming. Everyone else seemed to happily devour their selections which included a French toast donut, varieties of chocolate, classic sprinkles, and of course a maple and bacon combo. Go. Duck. Enjoy.
This was the first time having Duck Donuts. I couldn't pass up the Fall Favorites Dozen, so I ordered online to pick it up at a specific time the next morning. The next morning, I drove to Duck Donuts and arrived at 0900 as planned. There's plenty of parking! When I walked in, no one was there. I looked around and it seemed that the store could use some refreshing. I don't know how long the store has operated in that location, but it seemed like a long time. After a couple minutes, a worker walked in the front door, greeted me, and asked if I was there to pick up an order. I told her that I was and gave my name. She handed me a warm box of donuts with my ticket on top that had bits of icing on it. Upon arrival at home, I broke into the box and halved a few donuts to try. They were still warm, obviously fresh, and very sweet. I'm not sure if I'll return, but it was a good experience.
I am not a donut aficionado and rarely eat them but the maple bacon - wow! I have had maple bacon at other places but this was by far the best. First, the doughnut was cooked to order so it was served warm, the bacon and maple reminded me of eating pancakes and bacon. All doughnuts here are made with the same vanilla cake base and then you pick your toppings and glaze. My friend and I split these two doughnuts and I was regretting my agreement to split The chocolate coconut was ok but the maple bacon was fabulous.
Duck Donuts had been on my radar since I first moved to Reston over a year ago. They are a chain, but I'd never lived anywhere near one before. While the "made to order" concept was very intriguing, I didn't expect to love them. The donut glazes and toppings are fully customizable, but the donut itself is not. It is one type of batter, no flavor options, and you can't get them filled. For context, some of my faveourite donut chains are Krispy Kreme, and Winchell's Donuts. I also absolutely love Ronald's Donuts, located in Las Vegas, but they are not a chain. Some of my go-to's are glazed yeast donuts (especially the fresh hot ones you can get at Krispy Kreme when their "HOT" sign is on), blueberry cake donuts, chocolate cake donuts and filled dougnuts. Due to the singular type of donut availble at Duck Donuts, my expectations weren't set too high, yet I still managed to be dissapointed. FIrst off, what got me to finally try them was a promotion they were running for National Coffee Day. They were offering a free coffee with any donut purchase. Well, if you know me, you know I love coffee. I just couldn't pass this up! The frustrations began when I tried to place my order ahead of time for pick-up. This is my preferred method of ordering take-out, as it is more convenient for me, and often more convenient for the staff as well. On their Google review page, there is a link to order directly through Duck Donuts, and it says "no service fee". I clicked this option, entered my order, entered the promo code for the free coffee, no issues. Until I went to the check-out. Lo and behold, there was $1.00 service fee applied to my order. (see attached photo) This was hiccup number 1. I abandoned my cart and decided to go order in-person. After placing my order, the cashier informed me I needed the app for the free coffee. Their advertisement did not indicate this at all, in fact, it indicated very clearly that the app was not needed. I did inform the cashier. (see attached photo). Hiccup number 2. I went to sit down to download the app ( I REALLY wanted to try that cold brew with sweet cream, lol) It took about 10 minutes for it to download and install. Once it was ready, I got up to redeem the free coffee and pay for my order. I then sat down and waited for my donuts. It took about 10 minutes, which really isn't long at all, especially considering everything is made to order. However, I wasn't too thrilled about having to wait, simply because I already had to wait for the app to download, and I would have avoided waiting altogether if I had been able to place my order online like I orginally wanted to. When my donuts were ready I picked up the box at the pick-up counter and headed home. Without checking the box. Oops. I got home and opened the box, so excited to try my Pumpkin glazed donut with apple pie topping, streusel topping, and maple glaze. Let me tell you, when I opened the box and saw a chocolate apple mess in that box, I almost cried. Lol it seems so silly and I got over it pretty quick, but in that moment, I was so sad. I very rarely order chocolate anything, and I certainly wouldn't have ordered chocolate with that combo of flavors. I was already being a bit adventurous with the pumpkin flavor combos. Now...this last hiccup is partly on me. I had several opportunities to realize I wasn't getting a pumpkin donut. One, when the cashier rang up my order. Two, when I received my receipt. Three, when I received the actual donuts. I know better than to leave without checking...mistakes happen. In this case, I did receive what was rung up. It just wasn't, unfortunately, what I asked for. Had I been able to place my order online, this wouldn't have happened, as I would have been able to enter my customizations myself. The 2nd donut was exactly as I ordered it (Blueberry glaze, streusel, lemon drizzle) The glazes themselves were pretty good, other than the lemon (tasted artificial). I really liked the apple topping. The donut base was, unfortunately, not my cup of tea. While it was light and fluffy, it was oddly salty. I can see why their maple bacon donut is so popular...I defintely think their salty batter would work very well with those flavors. It just didn't work very well with the sweet toppings I chose. Interestingly enough, the streusel topping is more salty than sweet as well. Not salty in a good way like bacon would have been. Salty in a "why are you like this?!" kind of way. I didn't even drink the coffee. What my stars mean: 5 is outstanding, a must-experience, someplace I would bring/recommend to a tourist. 4 is great, someplace I would love to return again and again. Backup option to bring/recommend to tourists. 3 is good. Someplace I would return to if in the area. Not likely to reccomend to tourists, but possibly to a local. 2 is ok but only because it a great value, unique, and/or convenient. 1 means I would not return.
Love this place and it's a go-to to buy treats to share at work. Staff are friendly, good customer service , good food. However, it's losing a star because of the cleanliness of the facility. I was there today and used the restroom and saw this open vent on the ceiling FULL of dust and debris (see photo), In the dining area I noticed more on the vents on the ceiling, too. I feel bad for employees working here; think about what they're breathing in all the time. Hopefully this stuff isn't falling from the ceiling into the food, too. I hope the management does something about it.
The best bacon donut I've ever had! They are soo fresh and hot. The cashier went above and beyond, providing details into their donuts and flavors. The combinations are unique and delicious. The donut was the perfect size, and the shop had ample seating. Also, you can watch them prepare your donuts as you wait.
Right in the heart of Herndon. Easy to find the place and abundant parking available in the area. You can either order online or walk in. Ambiance is okay, place is clean, there is seating available if you are really craving to have donuts right there. Atmosphere is very calm. Staff and service is good and quick. You can see how the donuts are made. Donuts go through a nice conveyor system and are made fresh when ordered. Donuts are great, there are variety of donuts and you'll find the one that suits your taste. I liked blueberry pancake, S'mores, cinnamon bun and all the chocolate versions. Donut size is decent and very affordable. Will definitely recommend to try it out.
Being from Texas, one thing that surprised me was the lack of donut shops in the area. Duck donuts are good, but not great. The flavor I would give an eh, they aren't super flavorful. They do have many combinations and toppings which is nice. The donuts are always moist. They are quick donuts to get, even on busy mornings.
This was my first time experiencing Duck Donuts. I picked them up for a volunteering crew. There was a line and a lot of confusion over making on a paper your order. I think there could be some improvements on the flow of people and where to place the papers and pencils for people to select their orders. It was hard figuring out where the lines started and people were trying to push through the table and line to get to the coffee. The smells were intoxicating! Freshly made fried donuts being made to order. Once I ordered the dozen of donuts and secured some coffee I was able to see the process of what makes Duck so much different than other places. They make a donut with the same batter and the toppings is what sets each type of donut apart. So depending on what you ordered you will get them iced in various different icings. Then the toppings are added on top of the icing. The employee's will call your order number and display the box to you so you can see the end result and ensure they got the order right. Then they finish off the package with a top and wish you a good day. I had to of course sneak a donut when I got into the car. It was still a lil bit warm which was amazing! I did the lemon and coconut donut and OMG the flavor in the donut itself was just so much better than the cake type donuts of dunkin donuts. I was really pleased with the product and the interactions with the employees. read more

Came by at 7:04 and the doors were still open. Wanted a couple dozen donuts for some of my kids at the park nearby. The manager stated that they closed at 7:00 and could not help me. So much for helping out the small businesses. It's Krispy Kreme from now on. Awful customer service. Edit: I guess I was more hangry than anything else. I was upset because their donuts are sooooo good and delicious and unfortunately I was left with that empty feeling. I'm going back and spending my money there again. I admit that I was wrong. read more

Never thought I would give Duck Donuts another try, after my previous bad experience. But since this was a different location, I decided to give it a shot. The place was clean, with 2 employees and no customers around. I placed an order for the caramel mocha and was told the machine is down and so they weren't serving it. I ended up placing an order for two donuts. One was the salted caramel (vanilla) and the other was midnight madness (chocolate). This was from the fall menu. One donut was for $1.75. There was no wait time. I simply loved the salted caramel donut even though I have a big chocolate tooth. That particular donut was so light and airy and just immediately melted in my mouth. But the chocolate donut (midnight madness) was just saturated with oil, it tasted oily and left my hands very greasy. This donut was a bit denser and it just seemed to be cooked maybe at a cooler temperature and so it just soaked up all the oil. Due to this, the donut lacked in flavor and taste. Wish they were baked or air fried instead. Anyway will be back for the salted caramel donut and maybe try the oreo one too. read more
A good place to bring kids They have a machine that makes the donuts right before your eyes. One type of donut and you get to choose countless toppings. The donut itself is a light yellow cake. It is fair tasting and kinda small for the $1.60 price tag each. The ambience could use some love, maybe some more donut art on the walls especially since this place is more geared toward a child's palate. read more

had a craving for donuts and finally decided to try this location. I've only had Duck Donuts whenever we would go to the outer banks in NC, so eating these reminds me of fun summer times. We went an hour before closing on a Sunday evening so it was not busy at all. The staff on duty were pretty nice and had no problems in suggesting flavor combinations. We decided to try the popular maple bacon donut. The donuts are freshly made so be prepared to wait a little bit especially if it is a peak hour. The cake donut itself had great flavor and texture. It wasn't crumby or dry. the sweet and salty combo had a good balance to it. I prefer my bacon to be a little bit crispier, but all in all, i really liked it. This location has lots of parking and offer hot beverages to go with the donuts. Prices are great as well. There are a few tables inside if you prefer to sit down and enjoy the freshly made donuts. read more

Ah, yes! Duck Donuts! I finally got there---and yes, it's "as good as it gets" when compared to what else is available locally. It's way better than Dunkies or anything in the supermarkets! I was here on a Monday afternoon between 2:30 and 3 p.m. At that time of day, there were only 2 people ahead of me in the line to order. Megan C. gave good details on how the ordering process works here so I knew to grab a card and fill in my order before joining the line. That said, I would like to add another detail about the ordering process---The way the card is arranged, in the vertical column there is a listing of what type of doughnut you want, for example "bare", "vanilla", "lemon", "maple" plus others. If you want a vanilla glazed doughnut with rainbow sprinkles, as an example, go to the "vanilla' line" and to the right, you will see a list of toppings. Under the toppings, mark how many ones with rainbow sprinkles (or whichever topping) you want. When you fill out the order card, you will see what I mean. After incorrectly filling out my card, the cashier fixed it and explained to me how to do it correctly. She was very friendly and patient---then she just about blew me away when she told me that today was her first day! Wow! She knew exactly what she was doing and I let her know that I never would have guessed that she was a newbie! I place my order for 4 doughnuts---1 vanilla with rainbow sprinkles, 1 maple with bacon, one with lemon glaze and one bare. After paying, you are given a receipt with a number on it. Then you wait for your order to be prepared. When I was there, 4 workers were filling orders. When your number is called, before your order is boxed, you are shown it to make sure that it is correct. The box lid suggests putting your doughnuts in the microwave for 8 to 10 seconds which freshens them up. We did that before eating them and agreed that zapping them a bit does help. These are the best cake doughnuts that we ever had! Many cake doughnuts can be very dense and on the greasy side. Here, they are light in texture and not greasy. The toppings have great flavor that clearly comes through. We ate the other 2 the next day after zapping them and they were just as good despite being a day old. We both were very impressed! Duck Donuts locations are franchises. Whoever owns the one in Herndon knows what s/he is doing. They run a very friendly and efficient operation. In addition to doughnuts, they sell cold drinks that are in a refrigerated case. Also, they sell T-shirts---and I'm considering getting some for the grandkids. If you haven't been here yet and you like doughnuts, I strongly recommend making a visit. Just know that if you go during peak times (nights, weekends) you will find that it will be busy. Super fresh! The day we visited the store was packed. The line moved quickly. Upon entering, walk towards the back of the store, that's where the cashiers are. You will see yellow donut menus, pencils, and pens on the cashiers counter. Write down how many donuts you want. You get to customize your donuts, choose a donut coating and toppings. It takes a bit of time for them to top your donuts. You can watch your donuts being made fresh. Employees are friendly and helpful. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. I'm usually not a big fan of cake donuts but these are just the right consistency, not overly heavy. The toppings are all delicious. So glad we tried Duck Donuts out. Yum :D read more

Official DONUT-gasm warning! If you have had a donut crush on other donut chains, beware, one donut from Duck Donuts will cause you to have an donut affair. The hype is REAL folks. It's cheap and easy menu topping style makes it fail proof. Even skinny people run to this corner store like it's some kind of crack house. You know who vacations in Outerbanks just by walking into this place. There is money in these tans and flip flops. Enough about the lines of fans, get yourself out here and try one of these. I had a half dozen to get the full scope of how they can taste. Peanut butter, maple, chocolate with bacon bits (I almost piddled my pants on this one, it was amazing), cinnamon & sugar, glazed, and donut of the day......Almond Joy!!!! Oh glorious. Iced coffee is cheap there and you add the extras on a counter to the left of the registers. The place has a beachy feel and they have responsible teenagers running the show. The best part of the visit was getting my donuts from the darling girl and before she puts the lid on asks me, "Are they okay?" Precious! read more
3 stars and this is being very generous. I came here after eating a heavy meal with my cousins and they still had room for donuts! This location was the closest according to the GPS. It wasn't packed for a Sunday. One thing that stood out was that the employees were not friendly at all and kinda of pushy in rushing you. Now again this donut place is not the type where you point and choose. You have to get a yellow tally sheet and mark off your choices. My cousin had questions since she never been to duck donuts. Again the one male employee was just not helpful at all to put it nicer terms. You hand off your sheet to the cashier and then you get your receipt and then your number is called. The area where your donuts are decorated was messy. The restaurant was dirty and needed tables to be clean and floors to be swept. The ladies restroom: very dirty and had I used it before ordering I would have left and not ordered. When we got home and I bit into my donut it wasn't throughly cooked! The maple icing with bacon bits were ok but the actual cake donut was not fully cooked. Parts of the donut was mushy same as when you take a cake out the oven too early. In fact the majority of the donuts were undercooked. I probably wouldn't return to this location. Arlington location is much more friendlier, service is faster, your donuts are fully cooked and not mushy and the bathrooms are clean. read more
Cake donuts are a thing huh? Shows what little I know about the finer things in life... These are amazing. Simply put. Amazing. I don't eat donuts very often, but I'm pretty sure this store and the warm oooey gooey chocolate frosting on a freshly made piece of sugary heaven has ruined all other donuts places for me for the rest of my life. Love to eat the donuts when they are freshly fried! Remember, these are CAKE donuts and not the yeast donuts. Cake donuts MUCH heavier than the softer and lighter yeast donuts. If you are a yeast donut person, you will not like this place. If you like cake donuts or a donut lover, this place is for you. There's a LOT of hype from people about Duck Donuts from NC, but I do not think it lived up to it. Just didn't find it that great. To each their own. I am definitely a yeast donut fan..... read more
I'm a donut lover who will drive far and wide for the perfect donut. Thank goodness it's not all way down to the OBX. Lucky for me, this new location is not far, just in Herndon/Reston. It's on the way home from my parents house in Leesburg, and off the FFX Cty Pkwy. They are located next to one of my fav pet food stores. There's ample strip mall parking. Once you walk inside, they have a nice wide store front with plenty of souvenir 'donut' items(shirts, cups, etc). They manage the order taking process fine: you can place an order directly with the cashier, or complete one of those fancy order forms. Your order is somehow transmitted to the vast amount of donut creators! That's right, I don't know how they do it, and honestly don't want to know about all that frying...all I know is once my number is called, then my delicious box of fried donuts topped with my icing selections....is ready for transport. On this visit, I selected my favorite: Cinnamon Sugar, Vanilla Iced with peanuts, and then strawberry iced. The donuts are still hot and fresh by the time I arrive home(approx 20 minutes). The peanuts are VERY peanut tasting, so you must like the taste of peanuts. The cinnamon is my all time favorite, so light and sugary. A dozen takes you back about $12/ half dozen about $7. They are worth every penny, and I don't have to drive to the over-rated donut places in DC or Alexandria...sorry, but these are seriously way over the top better, in my opinion. read more
Since my last review, management reached out to correct the wrong. With my sister in law and 2 nephews present, the line went quicker, there were 2 cashiers and a completely separate coffee person and the donuts were thoroughly cooked!!! Chocolate with sprinkles this time and yes, they were pretty good. Many thanks to those that actually take the time to read reviews and right the wrongs! Great work! read more
Nearing closing time, especially on May 5th, I thought people would be too busy with Cinco de Mayo festivities, but Duck Donuts Herndon was PACKED! The line moved very quickly, and I was surprised to see they don't have pre-made donuts. Yup, everything is made FRESH and right in front of you. This donut-shop is an assembly-line style. Batter was stirred vigorously (KUDOS, guy who was stirring batter. Pretty sure my arm would've fell off), donuts were dropped in the vats of oil to be fried, and other staff put on the toppings and glaze. ====HOW TO ORDER ===== You choose to "make" your own flavors. First, you choose the type of glaze, then you choose the topping (coconut, rainbow sprinkle, chocolate sprinkle, nuts, bacon). We got 2 maple bacons, 1 strawberry sprinkle, 1 lemon sprinkle, 1 donut-of-the-day (Orange Cremesicle, very good and tasty), and 1 regular glaze sprinkle. The wait was maybe 10-15 minutes for the 1/2 dozen. It was around $7. ==== READ STARTING HERE IF YOU CARE ONLY ABOUT THE DONUT TASTE ====== Cake donuts! That's the style I was wondering what to call these. They weren't too dense, but I liked that. They were hot and soft out of the fryer! Glaze wasn't too sweet at all. The batter seems like a basic recipe, but they do it right. The toppings are a nice touch, and aren't overwhelming. I like that it's not all about the "looks" here, these things are pretty yummy! Just like everyone said...these donuts are delicious!!! Comes to you hot, fresh and made to order to your liking. You are given a menu to check off what kind of donuts you want from frostings, toppings and flavor. Prices are inexpensive also, 12 donuts for $12. Not bad at all! The wait is long and you will have to wait at least 15 minutes every time (I waited 30 minutes on a Friday at 4pm) so you will just have to go with the flow. It's just the process of waiting for the donuts to come out is the long part. They are fresh and cooked right in front of you, ain't no fake dunkin' donuts around here! My favorite are vanilla frosting with bacon. I am a bacon fanatic so of course that would be my favorite but it's just a great mix of sweet and salty. I love coconut, so that would be my second choice and I had the chocolate and vanilla frosting with coconut and they were both delicious. Even when I warmed up the donuts the next day (for 8 seconds like it says on the box ;P) it tasted like how it was on the day I got it. It was still warm, soft and delicious. Cooked to perfection and fresh, what more can you ask for? Even though when you walk in, it might seem like it'll take forever it goes by quick and you'll have those donuts in your mouth before you know it. Delicious cake donuts customized to your liking! When you walk in, you get the opportunity to fill out an order form of what kind of frosting and toppings you want on your donut. It's pretty brilliant. It does, however, suck that Oreos are not an option at toppings. But hopefully soon?? After you order your donut (or donuts), you can watch how they make your delicious treats! They also serve coffee and espresso drinks that will go great with your donut(s)! The staff is pretty patient in waiting for your order, and really helpful when you can't decide on what to get. Duck Donuts originated in North Carolina, and then they expanded to parts of Virginia, starting with Virginia Beach. I've been to the Virginia Beach location, and it was pretty swell. I mean, they're pretty much the same in terms of donuts. So kudos to you, Duck Donuts, on bringing your innovated and delicious donuts to this side of Northern Virginia! read more

Love it, mind you I got introduced to this place and concept a few years ago in Duck, NC. And I about swerved into another lane when I happened to drive past this place. For those familar with the Herndon area its where the frozen custard place used to be. I'm generally not a fan of the cake donuts, but these are so delightful since they are made fresh to order. Now here's how it works if your not familar. You arrive grab a golf pencil and an order sheet, you first pick out the glaze for your donut and then the topping. Favorites, the orange icing with rainbow sprinkles, the french toast (its the donut of the day), maple and bacon, chocolate with peanuts (ok really anything with chocolate). The waits can be pretty outrageous on the weekend mornings, so just be aware. They do keep well too and reheat nicely in the event you don't want to deal with the morning crowds. read more

Unimpressed. We waited more than forty minutes for our order, while watching more than a dozen other customers get served before us (who ordered after we did). The staff was slow-moving and didn't seem to care about what they were doing (which is a problem when they are making you custom-ordered creations!), so when we did receive our dozen, they were sloppy and inconsistent (clumps of powdered sugar on one-fourth of a doughnut, sprinkles that totally missed the doughnut, etc.). On top of that, we waited 10+ minutes for coffee to be brewed, and the inside of the store was sticky and cluttered with used napkins and strewn chairs. Was hoping to love Duck Donuts, but we'll look for another local shop before coming back to this one. read more

Indeed, ladies and gents, the hype around Duck Donuts is real. Biting into one of these delicious, made-to-order donuts reminded me of the hot beignets I stuffed myself with as a kid in the Congo. You start with a plain donut and either top it with all the glaze and toppings your sweet tooth can think of, or - if you're not that creative - select from their menu of already-customized donuts. One of their best sellers is the maple icing donut with chopped bacon. Really a one of a kind donut and all the proof you need that bacon not only goes with everything - it makes everything better. The French toast donut is another amazing creation. Doesn't taste much like french toast really, but it's still delicious. If you're in the mood for something simpler, you can stop at just coating your donut with a plain or chocolate glaze. These things are pretty much amazing however you decide to eat them. read more

Best donuts ever! Guys these are better than Sugar Shack and I don't say that often. All donuts start with a plain cake base then you choose the icings and toppings. They have so many options and their prices are great! Their customer service is worth an extra star. I locked my keys in my car and the staff was so helpful and understanding. The bad news is it's only 10 minutes from my house so my husband may not like the extra pounds! read more

Holy yum yum yummy!!!!! Talk about a sinful/sexual experience. Duck Donuts took it to another level! First time customers OMG, made to order, enough said. Price great! Employees friendly, to kind Place clean Food fantastic My mother ended up licking the box as she shoved the donut in her mouth. My maple bacon donut made me a little wet. I heard good things, but I thought Duck Donuts was just okay. It may have been an off day -- I looked through photos on google and yelp from other customers and thought they looked better. Mine were a little too moist and way too much icing for the amount of skinny donut ring. It was fun to try and the flavor combinations were cool... but overall it wasn't really satisfying. -- update -- the donuts are actually pretty good if you wait several hours to eat them after ordering. the texture and flavor develop instead of hot cake mush covered under hot sugar. read more
Fresh, hot and delicious! The batter was so fluffy and chewy. Flavors were great! I was pleasantly surprised by the maple and bacon one, though it is a bit heavy. Only regret was that the size of the donuts seemed slightly smaller than some of the other ones I've had in different major cities. Nonetheless, the freshness and flavor of the donuts we'll compensate for its slightly smaller size! read more
