Looks like lots of space if you wanted to have a donut, coffee, and hang out... not sure if they have wireless or not but it was nice and clean. Ordered two dozen of the assortments for the office and always it was a hit! For only a few more bucks than a chain place with mediocre (that's being nice) I'll always prefer to come here. Now that I know you can order online I'll probably do that next so I don't have to wait... although the wait wasn't too bad at all for fresh made to order donuts! Made to order so nothing is sitting on a shelf. Only 2 people working here one was cashier and the other the donut maker. Expect about a 10 minute wait for us you order at least half a dozen. Longer if there's more people in line. Donuts were delicious and mouthwatering. There are so many icing and topping combos. I didn't see if they did any filled ones. Duck Donuts is hands down my favorite donut chain in the NoVA area. I have previously been to the Fairfax location and throughly enjoyed my donut experience there. Most recently I stopped by with a friend to grab some donuts and opted for 1 standard glazed, chocolate icing, strawberry icing and cinnamon sugar donut. Four donuts came up to approximately $5. Depending on your personal budget this may seem to be a bit pricey. However rest assure the donuts here are totally worth it since they are fried fresh and topped with the icing of your choice. These donuts taste the best when you eat them fresh and piping hot. The consistency of the donuts is cakey and very soft. I personally was a huge fan of the chocolate and strawberry icing donut. They are definitely sweet but not too overwhelming for me. There's not much to complain about and I highly recommend these donuts to all donut lovers out there. Price is cheap $1.75 a pop for a fresh homemade sugar bomb crafted right before your eyes. It only took about 3-4 minutes. Got the Maple Bacon and the apple strudel. Both were good, texture is a little different because it's a cake donut. Overall I was pleased and will go back. Sloppy, inconsistent and fairly slow service. At any point it takes 15-20 minutes to get 2-6 donuts. The glaze is so hot it just oozes off, toppings are thrown on and not applied evenly and just tossed in the box. There isn't much of a waiting area so its kind of just a lot of awkwardly standing around. They only ever have 1 person on the cash and 2 people making the donuts. No and No. It's a donut shop that originated in Duck, NC, in the Outer Banks, and has thankfully opened an outpost in the Town of Herndon, next to Bagel Cafe, in the spot that was previously occupied for years by Milwaukee's Frozen Custard. These are FRESHER than FRESH, made-to-order, cake-style donuts, in a huge variety of custom flavors, priced at just over $1 per donut. How does it work? Why is there such a queue AFTER you order? Step on up, skip over the people staring blankly at the menus on the wall, and grab a YELLOW piece of paper with the order form on it, and a pencil. Get busy deciding the quantity you want (single, 1/2 dozen, dozen, etc.) and use the order matrix to choose your donuts and frostings, and then your toppings (i.e. sprinkles, coconut, peanuts, cinnamon sugar, bacon, etc.). Hand your completed order form to the cashier, pay up, and take note of your order number...and head over to the throng of other customers waiting with baited breath for their order numbers to be called. Take a seat. Be patient. You would just play on your phone anyway :) Inhale the sweet, sweet smells of fresh donut dough and listen to the loud, lively pop music, bop your head and tap your feet. It's a very happy place in here, and employees seem like they're having a great time, too. Once your order number is called, the employee who made your entire order will present the box of completed donut wonder to you to make sure it's to your liking. As we got closer to Duck Donuts, the lingering smell of freshly baked doughnuts and cinnamon immediately caught our attention. My doughnut senses were tingling! Duck Donuts occupies quite a large space, and is very open on the inside. They offer a unique concept, different from other doughnut shops in the area. As opposed to choosing donuts that are pre-made (with toppings and everything), the doughnuts here are made FRESH with YOUR CHOICE of toppings. That allows for a number of different flavor combinations! First, you pick your coating (10 to choose from) and then you choose your topping (5 to choose from). All doughnuts are vanilla based and come in singles ($1.25), 1/2 dozen ($6.95), dozen ($12.50), or a bucket ($17.25 for 18). Aside from doughnuts, you will also find fruit and beverages on their menu, as well as Duck Donuts merchandise (t-shirts, tumblers and mugs) around their store. BTW - their duck mascot is super cute. Once your order is placed, you can sit and wait at one of their tables OR watch while they make it right in front of you! Allow me to emphasize once again how FRESH these doughnuts are. I am a much bigger fan of yeast doughnuts (so fluffy and soft!), but I thought these were quite moist and less dense than your average cake doughnut. (you can also print off a form from their website if you're the prepared type) 2) Hand over your form at the register. I had always wanted to try Duck Donuts when we visited OBX but never got a chance. Then they migrated north into the Hampton Roads area (where we lived), but then we got stationed up here. Now they have two locations in NOVA! I prefer yeast/raised doughnuts...but I love doughnuts and don't discriminate when it's a good doughnut. These are great doughnuts. Even my mom, who doesn't like cake doughnuts, really enjoyed her cinnamon sugar one. Super light and fluffy and not at all dense like the major chains. We look forward to taking the Husband to Dulles so we can make a pit stop to Duck Donuts. The kids really enjoy customizing their donuts. They do offer a military discount, which is great. The prices for the donuts are actually super reasonable...even without the discount. You pay more elsewhere for not super fresh, customizable doughnuts. I had ordered a latte on my second visit and was super impressed. However, on subsequent visits they haven't been as great as the first two times I ordered them...too watered down. The staff is fairly friendly. Order forms to customize your fried creations are available to also help move the lines along. Wait times can sometimes run a while. For most of our visits, it's moved quickly though. Also, you can order their Donut of the Day on the days they're not featured (our favorites being the French Toast and Cinnamon Roll donuts). I know I've been remiss in posting photos, but everyone else has done that for me. I'm a lover of anything made of starch and doughnuts ranks in the top five - well it shares the number one spot with a few others..... Anyhow, I went at 9 a.m., people were already lined up outside, going down about two businesses over. The line does look daunting, but the whole process took 30 minutes. I know a lot of people won't wait that amount of time for anything, but these donuts are soooooooo good! They aren't greasy and the consistency is almost like a moist cake. It's not chewy and they're light in flavor and weight. There was a slight snag this morning though. A few orders, including mine, got lost in the shuffle - I was number 59 and 70 left before I did. To make up for it, my specific donut preparer gave me a free donut of my choice. I chose the orange icing donut as my freebie. My total order, minus the freebie, consisted of: maple, strawberry, peanut butter, maple, and glaze topped with cinnamon sugar (the Beach donut). All the donuts are the same, they just come glazed with whatever flavor you choose. Their glaze is very well crafted into your flavor of choice. The downside of that is the strawberry tasted very close to the regular glaze. I saw strawberry like pieces in it, but no fruit taste. The maple and peanut butter were mixed well and they weren't too sweet and flavorful. I almost forgot, the orange icing donut (aka orange creamsicle), is my most favorite. Freshly made donuts, hand dipped and topped to order. Since there's are frosted and topped to order, there's a bit of a wait time, so do expect to wait. There's usually an absurd line here, but I was excited when I drove past and didn't see a line out the door. Duck Donuts have daily special donuts, but you can actually get these any day of the week. There's an ordering sheet, but we ended up just ordering with the cashier because there was no line when we went. We tried the Beach (vanilla frosting with cinnamon sugar), Almond Joy (chocolate frosting with peanuts and shredded coconut), Orange Creamsicle (orange and vanilla frosting), and Maple Bacon (Maple frosting with bacon). Each donut had a generous portion of topping. My favorite was the Almond Joy donut. Each donut was slightly warm in the box, just begging to be eaten immediately. But I've noticed for a while that the customer service is fairly marginal and was so bad today that I decided to write a review. I stopped by today and it was all looking good, not busy at all, no real line, so should be in and out fast. Then a few orders are called out of sequence (after my order number) and when I ask to check on mine, the employee in the food prep area pulls some stuff out of the trash (apparently looking for my ticket) and then grabs a box and starts to pick up donuts without putting on new gloves. Having lost my appetite watching this, I request a refund. The manager on duty is completely apathetic, just processes the credit card and when I say it's concerning for a food-handler to be pulling things out of the trash and then handling food immediately, the manager says "he's going to put on new gloves," at which point I said that the food preparer didn't put on new gloves, he just started picking up food. When I said this was kind of messed up he replied: "We'll, I didn't see what happened." Right, but the customer did, which is why he's requested a refund. And then he continued, "... you didn't need to get a refund, he could've made you new donuts," missing the point that it's not that appetizing to watch stuff pulled out of the trash before your food is picked up. Having worked in restaurants and quick service environments I know it's tough to hire employees for franchises like this, but if Duck Donuts wants to improve then just look at the Chick-fil-A down the street -- they literally have employees walking around seeing if there's anything else they can do for you, offering to refill your drink, offering to bus your table, etc. -- customer service really isn't that hard - you either want customers to patronize your place of business and value them or you don't - clearly the staff here is not trained to put the customer first - they also seem to need a refresher on their sanitary practices. I understand that this location is one of the busiest locations for the chain and so maybe they really don't care with the volume of business they do. But it's disappointing. read more

My god...Herndon is about to get a lot fatter.... Ever since I learned that Dunkin' Donuts doesn't make their doughnuts fresh, I've been craving an alternative. Well...the doughnut gods were listening, because shortly thereafter, I spotted the Duck Donuts sign. So how good are they? Look...the line on opening day was out the door. The management should realize that on Fridays it is one of the busiest days of the weekday. People come in as early as 7:30 am to pick up some donuts for the office. Friends of ours love Duck Donuts so much that they wanted a tiered display of 200 Duck Donuts in lieu of a wedding cake. The bride submitted the order. When she went to confirm the order, they had lost it, so she submitted another order. She called and confirmed the order. I was tasked with picking up the donuts at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and driving them to Winchester, WV for the wedding. When I arrived at 8:30 a.m., there was an angry crowd of about 18 adults plus just as many small children waiting for their donuts. Some had been waiting over an hour. I approached the counter and said I was there to pick up a large order for the (family name) wedding. The manager looked at me like I had 3 heads and said they didn't have any large orders like that. He asked what was the order - how many / what type of donuts? I said 200. He said, OH! That was the order that was supposed to be picked up YESTERDAY at 8:30 a.m. We had the order ready to go but it never got picked up. I said no, the wedding is TODAY, I need the donuts TODAY. Me: "How long will it take you to make 200 donuts?" Angry little old lady with white curly hair standing next to me: "YOU BETTER MAKE MY FOUR DONUTS BEFORE YOU MAKE HIS 200!" Many frantic texts and phone calls between me and one of the groomsmen commence. Groomsman says I MUST wait for the donuts - there is NO alternative / NO plan B. I wait. I wait. The crowd grows. Soon there are 30+ angry adults waiting for their donuts. The manager and one of the donut makers started getting snippy with each other and the manager threatened to fire the donut maker. The manager announced an apology to the angry mob that their computer crashed that morning and one of their two donut making machines was broken, so they were at half-capacity. He encouraged people to go run a couple of errands and come back to pick up their donuts later. A couple of customers started going to the cash register and requesting a refund. The manager said they don't give refunds and he would be happy to give them free donuts the next day. They said they were only visiting in town that day and they were leaving. Oh well, sorry, no refunds. They eventually produced the 18 boxes of donuts I needed for the wedding. I was supposed to pick up the donuts at 8:30, go home, put on my wedding clothes, tie my son's bow tie, and leave for the wedding at 9:45. Well, I didn't leave Duck Donuts until 10 a.m. Arrived at the wedding 25 minutes late, but hey, mission accomplished - I delivered the donuts and we stacked them on the tiered display to make them look like a wedding cake. Thanks a lot, Duck Donuts. You added a significant amount of stress and anxiety to what was otherwise supposed to be a happy day, and I missed most of the wedding ceremony. You lost the order the first time the bride submitted it. You made the donuts for the wrong day. When nobody showed up to pick up the donuts on the day you made them, you didn't think to check the paperwork and maybe CALL and ask why nobody was picking up the donuts? In the end, I didn't think the donuts were that great. Making the donuts fresh and customizing their toppings is a cool novelty, but certainly not worth that kind of wait or price. read more
