I heard good things, but I thought Duck Donuts was just okay. It may have been an off day -- I looked through photos on google and yelp from other customers and thought they looked better. Mine were a little too moist and way too much icing for the amount of skinny donut ring. It was fun to try and the flavor combinations were cool... but overall it wasn't really satisfying. -- update -- the donuts are actually pretty good if you wait several hours to eat them after ordering. the texture and flavor develop instead of hot cake mush covered under hot sugar. read more

Fresh, hot and delicious! The batter was so fluffy and chewy. Flavors were great! I was pleasantly surprised by the maple and bacon one, though it is a bit heavy. Only regret was that the size of the donuts seemed slightly smaller than some of the other ones I've had in different major cities. Nonetheless, the freshness and flavor of the donuts we'll compensate for its slightly smaller size! read more

Terrible customer service. Had to call to change an order, got put on hold for a total of 20 minutes and hung up on twice.

Duck Donuts is hands down my favorite donut chain in the NoVA area. I have previously been to the Fairfax location and throughly enjoyed my donut experience there. Most recently I stopped by with a friend to grab some donuts and opted for 1 standard glazed, chocolate icing, strawberry icing and cinnamon sugar donut. Four donuts came up to approximately $5. Depending on your personal budget this may seem to be a bit pricey. However rest assure the donuts here are totally worth it since they are fried fresh and topped with the icing of your choice. These donuts taste the best when you eat them fresh and piping hot. The consistency of the donuts is cakey and very soft. I personally was a huge fan of the chocolate and strawberry icing donut. They are definitely sweet but not too overwhelming for me. There's not much to complain about and I highly recommend these donuts to all donut lovers out there. You will not be disappointed! read more

Made to order so nothing is sitting on a shelf. Only 2 people working here one was cashier and the other the donut maker. Expect about a 10 minute wait for us you order at least half a dozen. Longer if there's more people in line. Donuts were delicious and mouthwatering. There are so many icing and topping combos. I didn't see if they did any filled ones. The drawback to waiting is by the time you leave, your clothes and hair smell like a fried donuts. I recommend ordering and waiting outside or in your car. read more

Although I think the High School kids working there needs more supervision and should clean up the surroundings better, I'm really happy the Outer Banks has infiltrated Northern Virginia. I hope they can stay. The Duck Donut is a "cakey" heavier donut when compared to Krispy Kreme. And if Dunkin was your favorite, you probably don't need to be here... (For real, Dunkin was terrible and former Supermarkets made better donuts than them). Back to Duck, You start with a normal "cake" type donut then you can add all sorts of icing and/or toppings. They'll customize it to your liking and are typically very flexible. Its excellent and yummy. I shouldn't be typing right now and should be putting in my order instead. Oh, I didn't mention. THEY HAVE BACON. Yes I said Bacon. Try it with the Maple icing. Its like having pancakes and bacon. Bacon makes everything better. Ok ok, if thats not your thing, there so many other choices. If you never had a Duck Donut, its a must try. Just go and ignore the mess the kids made. Its not going to kill you. Maybe... Maybe. Honestly, I don't think the high school kids care. Just go so you know how good they are and you will be back. read more

I'm super late trying these which is shocking considering how obese my soul is. Anyways.....these donuts are pretty damn good. Price is cheap $1.75 a pop for a fresh homemade sugar bomb crafted right before your eyes. It only took about 3-4 minutes. Got the Maple Bacon and the apple strudel. Both were good, texture is a little different because it's a cake donut. Overall I was pleased and will go back. Not sure I prefer a cake donut to a regular donut because it is more crumbly but either way it's good. read more

The good The donuts are warm and fresh. The flavors are unique and fun. You get a box if you order 1 donut or 12 so it's not thrown in a bag Dunkin' donut style The not so good The flow is really off, you walk in at pick up area and cross over to get in line to order then double back to wait for pick up. The door by the order area is locked closed. It should be "IN" only and door by pick up "OUT" only so it wouldn't be so congested and confusing. Their donuts are fresh and cooked right in front of you. I love the bacon donuts! Not too sweet and delicious.

Remember how I wrote that review for Sugar Shack Donuts in Alexandria, expressing that my undiscovered appreciated for artisan donuts had been awakened? No? That's okay, because now this self-professed person who is "MEH" about all things donut has found a new, closer spot to home to fill that high-end donut need! Wow - this place has some AWESOME donuts! What is it? A donut made out of duck? A duck far donut? No and No. It's a donut shop that originated in Duck, NC, in the Outer Banks, and has thankfully opened an outpost in the Town of Herndon, next to Bagel Cafe, in the spot that was previously occupied for years by Milwaukee's Frozen Custard. These are FRESHER than FRESH, made-to-order, cake-style donuts, in a huge variety of custom flavors, priced at just over $1 per donut. How does it work? Why is there such a queue AFTER you order? Step on up, skip over the people staring blankly at the menus on the wall, and grab a YELLOW piece of paper with the order form on it, and a pencil. Get busy deciding the quantity you want (single, 1/2 dozen, dozen, etc.) and use the order matrix to choose your donuts and frostings, and then your toppings (i.e. sprinkles, coconut, peanuts, cinnamon sugar, bacon, etc.). Hand your completed order form to the cashier, pay up, and take note of your order number...and head over to the throng of other customers waiting with baited breath for their order numbers to be called. Take a seat. Be patient. You would just play on your phone anyway :) Inhale the sweet, sweet smells of fresh donut dough and listen to the loud, lively pop music, bop your head and tap your feet. It's a very happy place in here, and employees seem like they're having a great time, too. Once your order number is called, the employee who made your entire order will present the box of completed donut wonder to you to make sure it's to your liking. He or she will then put the lid on the box, wish you a nice day, and send you on your way. Good luck making it back home or to your office without eating them all! Taste: pillowy, light, and cakey! Delectable and melty - that maple bacon donut was all that and more, and the cinnamon sugar and peanut butter coconut were my other favorites, although my coworkers raved about the strawberry with sprinkle and the "zebra" donut of the day! I didn't have to wait to place my order, but I did wait about 12 minutes for my donuts to be made just for me, but I knew this ahead of time, so I went over my lunch hour, and didn't wait as long as the other reviews made it seem. This place will definitely be on my "random acts of kindness for coworkers" rotation! Happy to see another semi-local business open up in Herndon! read more

Best donuts ever. I was worried they might not make it through the pandemic, but they seem to be doing just fine.

Can't find Duck Donuts? Just follow your nose! That's exactly what my friend and I did as we had parked down the street at the Herndon Centre. As we got closer to Duck Donuts, the lingering smell of freshly baked doughnuts and cinnamon immediately caught our attention. My doughnut senses were tingling! Duck Donuts occupies quite a large space, and is very open on the inside. They offer a unique concept, different from other doughnut shops in the area. As opposed to choosing donuts that are pre-made (with toppings and everything), the doughnuts here are made FRESH with YOUR CHOICE of toppings. That allows for a number of different flavor combinations! First, you pick your coating (10 to choose from) and then you choose your topping (5 to choose from). All doughnuts are vanilla based and come in singles ($1.25), 1/2 dozen ($6.95), dozen ($12.50), or a bucket ($17.25 for 18). Aside from doughnuts, you will also find fruit and beverages on their menu, as well as Duck Donuts merchandise (t-shirts, tumblers and mugs) around their store. BTW - their duck mascot is super cute. Once your order is placed, you can sit and wait at one of their tables OR watch while they make it right in front of you! Allow me to emphasize once again how FRESH these doughnuts are. The fried dough is so soft that it literally melts in your mouth. The doughnuts here are also more filling (cake/volume wise), as opposed to being filled with lots of air holes. If you haven't already, I highly recommend trying Duck Donuts! read more

*3.5 Stars* If you like cake doughnuts, then you will love this place. I am a much bigger fan of yeast doughnuts (so fluffy and soft!), but I thought these were quite moist and less dense than your average cake doughnut. And the icing/toppings were not too sweet which was great. Once you get here: 1) Grab a Donut Order Form, a pen, and start marking off your doughnut creations! (you can also print off a form from their website if you're the prepared type) 2) Hand over your form at the register. The nice people there will enter in each of your doughnuts and will flawlessly recite your order. 3) Get your receipt and wait for your number to be called. Watch the doughnuts being fried and dipped in all sorts of icing and toppings. They are quite meticulous with each order, so no sloppy doughnuts here. 4) Grab your box of piping hot made-to-order doughnuts and enjoy! Although, the toppings would taste even better on a yeast doughnut, I liked the maple bacon doughnut, particularly because the bacon was crisp and crumbled in small bits. Some of the other specialty doughnut places keep their bacon limp and fatty. I also enjoyed the vanilla glazed doughnut with shredded coconut. Yum! $12.50 for a dozen, and about a 20 minute in-and-out time with a line to the door - it moves quickly! read more

Donuts are donuts...how good can they get, anyway? That's my thought before I visited Duck Donuts. BUT DONUTS CAN CERTAINLY GET BETTER. They are warm, fluffy, and not too sweet. I'm not sure how it's possible, but apparently it is!! I had the cinnamon sugar, glazed with coconut flakes, vanilla with chocolate sprinkles, and maple with chocolate sprinkles. Cinnamon sugar is definitely my #1! I don't usually like my donuts sticky (so I don't usually eat glazed or ones with frosting), but their glazed donuts and frosted donuts are really, really good. Given, the glazed/frosted ones are sweeter than cinnamon sugar, but still not too sweet IMO and not as sweet as dunkin donuts. Maybe them being warm also play a role? But yea, I'm in love. I'm just waiting for the Fairfax store to open so I can get it every morning on my way to work!!! read more

All their donuts are the cake variety, but they are light, warm and have more of a fried dough quality. You can choose any toppings and it's the same price. I chose maple with crumbled bacon, and it was amazing. Perfect complement of savory and sweet. Even the simple glazed only serve to highlight the slightly crispy doughy deliciousness of the donuts. Pretty good, but does not beat Sugar Shack in my book. The doughnuts here are more cakey in texture, & smaller not as fluffy & big as Sugar Shack. They only have select options for glazes (None, Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Lemon, Maple, Orange, etc.) & few topping choices (Rainbow Sprinkles, Chocolate Sprinkles, Bacon, Peanuts). They are made-to-order so you go up to the cashier & put your order in & they give you a number. It was pretty busy, when my friends & I went in around 2 pm on a Wednesday & the wait was about 10-15 minutes to get our doughnuts. I got the Vanilla Rainbow Sprinkle, Chocolate Chocolate Sprinkle, Strawberry Glaze, & Cinnamon Sugar. The doughnut itself is pretty good, I really liked the outer shell of the doughnut because it was crisp & slightly crunch. The only thing I didn't like about the doughnut was the cakey texture, which is just my preference. I like fluffy & light doughnuts. The glazes were pretty light, the chocolate was probably the heaviest. The Strawberry glaze was one of my favorites, light tasting & some little chunks of strawberries (not bursting with strawberry flavorful & not as sweet). The sprinkles on both my doughnuts on top of glazes were TOO sweet, it literally hurt my teeth. The Cinnamon Sugar was okay, didn't taste as much cinnamon as I thought I would. I also got to try a Lemon Glazed, which was surprisingly delicious & my favorite. The doughnuts come warm, but I thought it tasted a bit better after they were cooled down. Overall, great doughnut place. They also offer hot & cold beverages, apparel merchandise, & sundaes! If you haven't tried, they're good to at least try to say you have. read more

So torn on what to give this place. I keep going back and forth on a 4 and a 5. At the end of the day, its just short of a 5. 4.99 for the ducks. Went here this morning and the line was quite long, almost out the door. It moved relatively quickly though! This place does awesome, made to order doughnuts. Think of krispy Kreme with the hot sign always on. I went with the pb frosting topped with chocolate sprinkles, and the chocolate frosting topped with bacon. I wouldn't have minded a bit more pb flavor in that frosting, but overall very good. The doughnuts were still warm when I got home 10 minutes later. I had an iced coffee, which was average at best....would definitely suggest an espresso station and a Barrista to up the coffee game. Also got a sausage egg and cheese biscuit. It was okay. Great place and easily the best doughnut option around, especially considering there isn't anything else really. Definitely worth a stop!! I'll be back! read more

I had always wanted to try Duck Donuts when we visited OBX but never got a chance. Then they migrated north into the Hampton Roads area (where we lived), but then we got stationed up here. Now they have two locations in NOVA! I prefer yeast/raised doughnuts...but I love doughnuts and don't discriminate when it's a good doughnut. These are great doughnuts. Even my mom, who doesn't like cake doughnuts, really enjoyed her cinnamon sugar one. Super light and fluffy and not at all dense like the major chains. We look forward to taking the Husband to Dulles so we can make a pit stop to Duck Donuts. The kids really enjoy customizing their donuts. They do offer a military discount, which is great. The prices for the donuts are actually super reasonable...even without the discount. You pay more elsewhere for not super fresh, customizable doughnuts. I had ordered a latte on my second visit and was super impressed. However, on subsequent visits they haven't been as great as the first two times I ordered them...too watered down. The staff is fairly friendly. Order forms to customize your fried creations are available to also help move the lines along. Wait times can sometimes run a while. For most of our visits, it's moved quickly though. Also, you can order their Donut of the Day on the days they're not featured (our favorites being the French Toast and Cinnamon Roll donuts). Only minor complaint...they need some locations further north in MD!! read more

I know I've been remiss in posting photos, but everyone else has done that for me. I'm a lover of anything made of starch and doughnuts ranks in the top five - well it shares the number one spot with a few others..... Anyhow, I went at 9 a.m., people were already lined up outside, going down about two businesses over. The line does look daunting, but the whole process took 30 minutes. I know a lot of people won't wait that amount of time for anything, but these donuts are soooooooo good! They aren't greasy and the consistency is almost like a moist cake. It's not chewy and they're light in flavor and weight. There was a slight snag this morning though. A few orders, including mine, got lost in the shuffle - I was number 59 and 70 left before I did. To make up for it, my specific donut preparer gave me a free donut of my choice. I chose the orange icing donut as my freebie. My total order, minus the freebie, consisted of: maple, strawberry, peanut butter, maple, and glaze topped with cinnamon sugar (the Beach donut). All the donuts are the same, they just come glazed with whatever flavor you choose. Their glaze is very well crafted into your flavor of choice. The downside of that is the strawberry tasted very close to the regular glaze. I saw strawberry like pieces in it, but no fruit taste. The maple and peanut butter were mixed well and they weren't too sweet and flavorful. I almost forgot, the orange icing donut (aka orange creamsicle), is my most favorite. It's the perfect balance of icing and orange - num num nummy! Goodbye Astro, HELLO DUCK DONUTS! Duck Donuts is a great addition to the NoVA burbs! read more

Sloppy, inconsistent and fairly slow service. At any point it takes 15-20 minutes to get 2-6 donuts. The glaze is so hot it just oozes off, toppings are thrown on and not applied evenly and just tossed in the box. There isn't much of a waiting area so its kind of just a lot of awkwardly standing around. They only ever have 1 person on the cash and 2 people making the donuts. This location is convenient but nothing special. read more

Freshly made donuts, hand dipped and topped to order. Since there's are frosted and topped to order, there's a bit of a wait time, so do expect to wait. There's usually an absurd line here, but I was excited when I drove past and didn't see a line out the door. Duck Donuts have daily special donuts, but you can actually get these any day of the week. There's an ordering sheet, but we ended up just ordering with the cashier because there was no line when we went. We tried the Beach (vanilla frosting with cinnamon sugar), Almond Joy (chocolate frosting with peanuts and shredded coconut), Orange Creamsicle (orange and vanilla frosting), and Maple Bacon (Maple frosting with bacon). Each donut had a generous portion of topping. My favorite was the Almond Joy donut. Each donut was slightly warm in the box, just begging to be eaten immediately. They weren't especially oily or greasy on the hands. Size wise, these donuts are smaller than the supermarket variety and DD kind. read more

Great donut shop consistent with the last location I visited in Fairfax. Great product, great service, clean, neat, friendly workers, a complimentary water station. Bonus! This location has indoor and outdoor seating to sit and enjoy your sweets. Mom's cheat sheet: My big kid is transitioning into big kid birthday celebrations. My god...Herndon is about to get a lot fatter.... Ever since I learned that Dunkin' Donuts doesn't make their doughnuts fresh, I've been craving an alternative. Well...the doughnut gods were listening, because shortly thereafter, I spotted the Duck Donuts sign. So how good are they? Look...the line on opening day was out the door. Whenever I go, there are at least five people ahead of me (usually a lot more). The doughnuts are made from fresh batter, made to order, right before your eyes. About a dozen or so options for flavors and toppings. If you have no idea, just go with the daily special. Good lord....I bite into the doughnut, and the warm gooiness melts in my mouth. Came here for the first time, and I will absolutely be coming back. These donuts are phenomenal! First off let me start by saying the price of these donuts are very reasonable. I've seen donuts cost way more in cities like DC and Chicago with half the quality. Single donuts cost about a 1.50. These donuts are made to order. They have about 8 or so choices of glaze and another 8 or so choices of topping. I came here with a friend and we ordered 2 donuts. Strawberry glaze with bacon bit topping and a peanut butter glaze with coconut shreds. The donuts came out fresh and warm. They had divinely soft texture without having too much oil and greasiness. The glaze tends to run so there is plenty to scoop up from the wax paper while it's still warm. I had the Pb and coconut which was my favorite but also tried my friend's strawberry bacon which was also tasty. They pulled of the sweet and savory combo well. There are tons of possibilities to order, so I am sure those of you who try it will already have or will come to find your favorite combo. read more

Would have totally given this more stars except I placed an order online for PICKUP - and they charged me a "service fee?" What is that all about? I mean maybe if i had asked for delivery....i am painfully aware of all of the high fees that go along with that, but to charge a service fee for me to drive to the store and pick up my own food? That's just wrong DD! Plus I was sitting there yesterday morning waiting for my donuts to be finished and they put my box together, slapped a sticker on it and placed it on the pickup counter - never called out a name - there was another party sitting and waiting also so had I not gone to see what name was on the box and just assumed it was NOT for any of us sitting and waiting, those nice, warm, gooey donuts would be been sitting there getting cold. So people check your receipts before you check out online - I've learned my lesson and I won't be back - dunkin donuts is where I'll be spending my $ from now on. read more

I actually stumbled upon Duck Doughnuts and immediately made the decision to stop in and see for myself what warm goodness was waiting for me. I took away 1 star because when I got the ordering form and sat down the majority of the tables were covered in various sticky items from patrons who waddled off into sunset full of Duck Doughnuts. The order form simplifies the process of ordering and minimizes a customer standing in line trying to make a life decision when it comes to a doughnut. If you are active duty military, they offer a discount. Be patient as all of the items are made to order and aren't just sitting around getting old waiting on a hungry customer to claim them. It's pretty cool to see your doughnuts being "born". You actually see them go into the deep fryer, cool, and adorned w/whatever your imagination comes up with. All of the workers were pleasant and were well informed. Parking is shared among the other businesses in the area but wasn't a hassle. Don't be intimidated by the lines, the workers handled it like a boss and always kept good demeanor. Very glad I stopped in and if in the area I'll stop. Soft...Deep Fried...Sweet...YUMSY! Went for DD's soft opening. the store was open today from 9 to 3 pm. We were among the last few customers who could get a taste of their donuts. You have options to choose the icing and then add toppings to it! Just like other donut shops they have options to buy donuts by 1/2 Dozen, Dozen or Bucket (18). We ordered 2, Vanilla Icing with Chocolate sprinkles (mmmhmmm) and Chocolate Icing with Shredded Coconut . We loved the deep fried goodness. It was awesome. Since it was the first day, I saw some confusion among the staff members (in the pickup area) which I am sure will get corrected as they gain experience with time. I want to point some out (so that they can get better!): 1) Overall the staff could be a little more welcoming 2) The "Closing" sign at the door was a little confusing (especially for the people who came after 3 pm). I wanted to try Duck Donuts when we visited the Outer Banks last May, but we didn't get an opportunity. A year later, they have flocked to NoVa, so no need for a road trip! My boyfriend works nearby and picked up a half-dozen for me: bare, maple bacon, maple, glazed, vanilla, and strawberry. It's $6.95 for a half-dozen, and brings you to $7.54 with tax. Maple bacon and vanilla donuts were consumed straightaway. The donuts are light and fluffy with a bit of chew, and not too sweet. Unlike the Fractured Prune franchise, which were the Lisa Frank of donuts (think gimmicky fruity-pebbled covered donuts and and the like) Duck Donuts offers traditional toppings and a few interesting combinations without being over the top. The donuts are made to order and are best fresh. However, I broiled my leftovers on low over the next few days. They reheat really well, just make sure to keep an eye to avoid a charred donut! On the donut radar, I would rank them better than Dunkin Donuts and less sweet than Krispy Kreme. I now can see why they are a must-visit when you visit the Outer Banks. read more

Got here at 715am and left at 740 am. I vouldnt believe how busy and packed it was so early but it was So. Worth. It. Build your own donut concept. Theres only one cake donut base and you have a couple glazes to choose from and then you get a choice of toppings (coconut, sprinkles, peanuts, bacon!!!) Since there arent a zillion choices it is not overwhelming to make a decision. Nice amd simple. They are all hot and fresh and you can watch them make everything. ..like cripsy kreme! Except these are very cakey donuts, not yeasty. They have great prices, theres a 2 donut and coffee special for 3.59...pretty good deal. They also do breakfast sandwiches, muffins, coffe buckets!, and fruit! It is a surprisingly large space for a donut shop. I just wonder how long it will be in style for. If you havent been, go now! I went by this place this morning after picking up some breakfast next door. I was delightfully surprised with the place. It gets very busy and there will be a wait depending on how many people are there. The donuts are made to order, so they were very fresh tasting. I had a maple bacon donut and a orange cream donut. Both were delicious. Maple Bacon was my favorite. The saltiness of the bacon complimented the maple very well. Almost had a smoky flavor to the donut... Overall, very good donut place. Will definitely be back. Advice/Tips: Try to order ahead, you will have a wait if you just walk in and order at peak times. (I waited about 15 min for two donuts at 8:30 AM) If you get extra donuts, i suggest to heat it up about 5-7 second in the microwave right before eating. Then they taste like they just came out of the oven. In the future i will definitely be getting a few to go and enjoy at home! I think it is 6 donuts for $7.00----Great Price for me! read more

We came here on Mother's Day and it was pretty busy. There were customers standing everywhere and it was a bit confusing at first knowing where to go but we figured it out quickly. The line to order is on the left, the right side is where you pick up your donuts. Although the line was long it went pretty quickly. We stood in line maybe 10 minutes, then waited about 5 minutes for our donuts. I recommend that you grab a yellow order form and fill it out while you wait. That made things super simple when it was our turn to order. The kids enjoyed watching the donuts be made. Now for the most important question, were these donuts any good? I was worried they wouldn't be as good as people say, but they completely exceeded our expectations! If you like cake donuts these will blow your mind. So yummy, fresh and warm! Every donut we tried was amazing. I was skeptical of the popular maple bacon donut but that was one of our favorites! We also got glazed, chocolate with peanuts, french toast, strawberry with sprinkles, chocolate with sprinkles, and cinnamon sugar. All delicious! Finally we have a good donut place around here! read more
