The synopsis: Do take-out only and only if you happen to be in Herndon at the moment. And only if you're trying to recapture a memory or two of this place from over 20 years ago when the foodscape in this area was different. I think China King beats this place hands-down. But China King Herndon is gone. And this place, along with Mr. Pepperoni and maybe a few other stores here, has managed to continue on for nearly 25 years. It's been probably a decade since I've been here and I used to semi-regularly have lunch here 24 years ago. The strip mall this is in was redone a few years ago and looks nice. Unfortunately, Chen's owners haven't done anything inside. Upon walking in, I was met with an indescribable odor. Not pleasant, but not completely of rot and decay. Some portions of the wall and decorations are showing signs of abandonment. The tables and chairs are old. The floor tile is old. The wall hangings are old. The AC unit that spins up every few minutes is vintage. The menu board behind the counter is ancient. There is nothing here that merits a dine-in experience. The narrow area toward the back and left of the kitchen that used to be seating is now open storage. I had second thoughts and almost decided to walk out. But I craved the spicy stewed beef noodle soup that I first tasted more than 20 years ago, so I risked it. First, a few conditions described by other recent reviewers still exist. There are two children, presumably of the owners, playing in the dining room. Two of the tables and a few boxes on the floor are strewn with the owners' and kids' belongings and snacks. One child is still a toddler and sitting in a high chair while the other pushes her around. They're cute and not particularly rude or bothersome, but it's hard to not be concerned and distracted. The younger woman taking orders from behind the counter would often disappear into the kitchen for minutes while other customers entered the store and were waiting. That was a good sign though: there were about 4 other customers who came to pick up orders while I was waiting for mine. The wait was a bit longer than I expected, but one person who was there before me ended up walking out with a pretty large order, so that might have slowed the kitchen down. I ordered the beef noodle soup and the spicy wontons. Note: I mis-ordered. I really wanted the stewed beef soup but accidentally got this other soup. So beware there are two similarly listed beef noodle soups. The drive home was about 12 minutes. The wontons were lukewarm so a 30 second zap in the microwave remedied that. The soup broth was still steaming hot. The meal also came with a fried spring roll, unexpectedly. The spring roll was crispy on the outside and not so pleasantly mushy on the inside. It's just a carb bar. The wontons were alright. Good spice on the sauce. But they just weren't tasty. The noodles and toppings came well-packaged in a plastic bowl. As you can see in the photos, i reassembled everything into proper dishes. The noodles were quite good with a little bit of chewiness. The cabbage and bean sprouts also were good and seemed fresh. The beef, well, wasn't what I expected. Part of that was because I mis-ordered. The beef was perhaps lean sirloin. The type of cut that's done for stir fries. Some pieces were tough and chewy while other pieces were tender and seemed they had been velveted in the cooking process. Overall, the soup was mildly satisfying (the broth was quite good), but I was disappointed about not getting to try the spicy stewed beef soup again after more than 20 years. Having seen the condition of the front of the restaurant (and now worried about what the condition of the back of the restaurant might be), I'm not so inclined to go back. Even for just a dribble of that spicy stewed beef soup still occupying my memory. read more

This is your standard run of the mill Chinese takeout restaurant. We do group orders here frequently for work and every time it has been great. They have given us extra crispy spring rolls for the group and the containers are always labeled which is such a big help when serving a handful of people with different orders. They are prompt to call me when they are out of a specific item for the day and offer a similar replacement. read more

I was out and about and in the mood for Chinese takeout and Chen's Kitchen was just a 1/2 mile away so I said let me swing by and give them a try. I was greeted as soon as J entered and they have their menu on a large flatscreen that's right at the counter which made deciding on what to order easier than it typically is with traditional paper menus or with the picture menus on the walls. I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan and Steamed Chicken & Broccoli both with Brown Rice. I was told it would take 10 minutes and it was ready right on time. I took the food home to eat and I must say that Chen's Kitchen gives my usual Chinese takeout restaurant a run for its money so I will definitely be ordering from them again! read more

So slow. Ordered and they told me 20 minutes. Arrived 25 minutes later and waited for another 30 minutes. They are primarily the out and delivery so you're sitting in a cold, dank and rather dirty dining room. And when your food finally comes out don't expect an apology for your super late food. This place is horrible! I ordered the vegetable wonton soup, and it had pork. Then I tried to eat the veggie spring rolls, and they had NO filling! I thought, well, good thing I paid for 2 bags of crispy noodles to munch on, and there was only one tiny bag! Im going to go curl up on my couch now after a hard day of work, and eat those 4 crispy noodles. Service here always takes forever in time! We ordered for pick up. She trivialized the further wait time and said "couple minutes more." There were 2 others also waiting obnoxiously long before we got ours. Food is OK, but the wait time is insane even calling in ahead of time. This never fails. I want to like them but the slow service kills it. Also, I don't appreciate they leave their kid unattended by another kid pushing them and dragging them across the floor in a stroller like she's not a human being. Odd behavior. The cashier just left and didn't come back out and the 2 young kids were talking with a customer stranger and we at first thought it was the father but he wasn't.... I wouldn't leave toddler children out on floor with strangers and no cashier in front. We witnessed all this while waiting for our food. I know this one of those local, typical Chinese restaurants, but I've ordered many times from Chen's since moving to Herndon 4 years ago and wanted to give them a review. Whenever I am craving American Chinese food, I order here and always get the right stuff consistenly. I also always get my order delivered, but I made the drive to pick up my food for once and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the customer service is too. My pickup order had General Tso's chicken, egg drop soup, and beef with broccoli. All necessary utensils were included and I also got a free eggroll thrown in. The price was also decent for everything I got! The location is in a small shopping center and is not difficult to spot. Upon entering, the front desk is pretty much in front of you and they have a large monitor with the menu on it. read more

Surprising hidden gem in Herndon... in a strip center... a tiny mom and pop shop with yummy food! So far we have had scrumptious shrimp in black bean sauce, twice cooked pork, and szechuan green beans ... also good is the spicy cabbage appetizer and the pork fried dumplings... It's no frills inside but that's okay as it keeps prices low I love they have small and large options on the entrees... They do a nice takeout business... but we opt to eat in! read more

We tried Chen's Kitchen for the first time and were disappointed with several things. We ordered the Crab Rangoon which was 99.9% cream cheese & specs of what looked like pollack & not real crab. This had absolutely no crab taste at all. Another selection we tried was the Happy Family which has shrimp, chicken & beef. This dish had a wonderful flavor and we were excited when we saw how large the shrimp were, but when we bit into the shrimp it was just mushy like it had been refrozen a few times. All the rest of this dish was really tasty & nice. The veggies were fresh & a nice size. The General Tao's chicken was the most disappointing. There was VERY limited chicken and most pieces were 100% breading. Sauce was meh. We were so disappointed that we probably won't give them a second chance. read more

You can probably tell where this review is going. I am now on the search for good Chinese delivery, so the experimental beat starts here. For a first runner, this was not bad, but certainly not the best. I got a couple of items for $18 (the price is good), but the food itself I felt could be better. The Wonton soup is pretty bland, their egg rolls are crunchy, but there isn't any meat in it! It just had some cabbage in it. I did like the roast pork lo mein, it is fresh and they give you a lot. They also put it in the traditional take out cartons, which I think holds the flavor than when it is put in a Styrofoam container. Thankfully the delivery time was quick, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt here. I will continue to look around, but this was not a bad start. read more

My friends and I were craving Chinese food. We decided to go with Chen's Kitchen, but we were disappointed. We placed in a large order for 8 people. However, they messed up our order. First, one of our General Tso's order was mixed with an orange chicken. Second, we were missing our drunken noodles order. In addition to the bad service, the food was pretty bad. I found this on Yelp and called ahead for pick up. It only took them 10 minutes to prepare and it was hit and ready when I arrived. The exterior says "I'm a trendy/hipster Chinese restaurant." The inside says "Nah, I'm a regular Chinese restaurant." There is plenty of seating inside for those who prefer to dine-in. They used to be my go to place for takeout but they've been so inconsistent every time I've ordered lately. Some times the flavor is good (for Chinese takeout) and sometimes it's beyond bland. Tonight I ordered shrimp lo mein, egg drop soup, crab Rangoon, and orange chicken. Everything was beyond bland with the exception of the orange chicken, and like another reviewer my crab Rangoon also had nothing but cream cheese in it. I have been this place several times. Their food is authentic as Chinese food. And the price is simply much lower than nearby restaurants in Reston. This is clearly a family-owned business. Everyone there works 7 days a week in an old day fashion. I heard that they have been around for almost 30 years. (Look at the TV from the yore and the old style Chinese painting!!!) The reason why their price can kept low is simple: they don't pretend to be fancy. During weekend, they are really busy for pickup or delivery order. Chen's always provides good, fast service. I usually order delivery, so I can't tell you about their actual restaurant. The price is better than any Chinese food around. The Kung Pao Chicken is consistently good, not too spicy and the sauce they make is better than any other Kung Pao dishes around. The steamed dumplings, fried wontons and spring rolls are adequate, not incredible but not inedible. The Chinese Donuts were a bit disappointing and a bit dry/stale/overcooked. I went and picked up dinner tonight because I needed to find a decent Chinese. There's really nothing out there I've been to chopsticks I've been to mandarin and I'm afraid I'm very disappointed. This was just as disappointing if not worse. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken, which had absolutely no flavor it felt like they pulled it out of a bucket and hadn't even cooked it properly because it was warm on the bottom. I even added some hot crushed peppers myself to give it some kind of taste and it did nothing to it.The chicken lo mein was tasteless, and the orange chicken was so full of filling with hardly any chicken. I got fried rice for free because I spent over $35 and they could've kept that because it was really tasteless as well. I am very very disappointed. If somebody can direct me to a decent Chinese in the Reston/Herndon area even going out to Sterling or Chantilly that's will give me quality not quantity I'll buy from there, but never again at any of these three restaurants. Very mom and pop establishment. If your looking for fancy establishment or something makes you feel like you will be slightly upscale this is not the place. Now if you want a place where the food is great and inexpensive this is the place. Kind of reminds me of a dive with excellent food. They give you the Asian zodiac paper on your tray. Very unsatisfactory experience here yesterday. I ordered online for lunch for my wife's birthday and went for pickup 20 minutes later. When I arrived I was the only customer and even had to wait a couple of minutes before anyone even came from the back to wait on me, but acted unexpectedly that I had an order pending and told me that I had to wait awhile. 2 other people came after me ordering and receiving their food while I still patiently waited, even being told that my egg foo yung was holding up my order???? After waiting 25 minutes after arriving I finally received my order (45 minutes after placing it). When I got home I found that things ordered "little spicy " were VERY spicy, but the killer was the egg foo yung was burned charcoal black. Obviously they missed my order and rushed through making it, though haphazardly. My wife's birthday lunch turned out to be a disappointment and an embarrassment.
