I ordered Szechuan chicken what I received was NOT that. Szechuan chicken is a crispy chicken thigh meat mixed with dried red chili peppers, Peppercorns and other seasonings. First thing to take note of: The online pricing on Google and Yelp are not up to date, so if you look at those, plan on paying $.050-$1.00 more per item, give or take. Some of the menus inside have been changed by hand to reflect changes, but pay attention to what you're paying. That was annoying to discover, but since the prices inside were correct, and menu prices are often "subject to change, blah blah," it's not a real issue for us. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall place, complete with faded Chinese decorations and a table piled with phone books, business cards, and brochures, so pretty much just like so many other hole-in-the-wall Chinese joints. The service (read: lady at counter) is always very friendly and prompt, whether on the phone or in person. There are a limited number of tables (kitchen dinette style), but I've only gotten take-out. The portions are good for the prices, and the rice that comes with most meals is absolutely packed tight on the side, and is usually much more than we can eat with a meal. It makes great leftovers, though! The food is consistently good, a few steps above some of the other places I've eaten in the area. It's not that stellar place you went to that one time with hand-cut noodles and egg-drop soup they finish at your table, but if you want solid, delicious food for a decent price ($7-$10/entree, give or take), I can recommend this spot. This is a small bonus to me: the take-out containers are usually strong plastic for a lot of items, and I mean totally reusable, dishwasher safe containers with lids. Like I said, not a reason to go, but it beats leaky Styrofoam clamshells or a stack of oily white Chinese take-out boxes. Plus, I can always use more food storage at home. I swear I reviewed this place a long time ago.... I wonder if Yelp filtered it or their database was hating on me one day.... Or maybe I just dreamed I reviewed Chen's; I mean, I usually dream about Yelp every night.... This place is quickly becoming my favorite Chinese take-out place in Herndon. We used to frequent Chen's at my old office and had pretty good luck with them. I recall the coworkers really enjoying the general Tsos and Orange chicken because the chicken was white meat and not gristle. I would usually get the kung pao chicken or the double cooked pork or pork with garlic sauce and it would be tastly. It might not be the BEST Chinese food I've ever had, but it is good and I feel like I know what I'm going to get when I order their lunch specials. This wins points for me... because the other place nearby I've been going to have become very inconsistent. At the other place across the street, I may get the best food I ever had, and then the next time it will be downright bad. Like I said before, I like their Kung pao; "meat" with garlic sauce; double cooked pork. Once I got their Taiwan noodles and they were good.... a nice lighter style noodle dish. But today... omg. I had their daily special which was Chicken with eggplant. I asked the lady if it came with garlic sauce, and she said no; but if I wanted it with Garlic sauce they could make it that way. O M G. It was so freakin' good. The portion was large and I devoured the whole thing. It was nice and sweet (but not disgustingly sweet), had some kick to it, the sauce had the right consistency, and you could taste the garlic. It wasn't some boring Chinese brown sauce. The sauce had depth, seemed well balanced to my palate, and reminded me why I like coming to Chen's. The staff is friendly too. The lady working the registers always answers my silly questions about the menu without giving me the stink-eye. Next time the office is getting together to order carryout, I'm steering them towards Chen's since they haven't let me down yet. BONUS: They have a large dispenser of hot tea to drink while you wait for your food. I took advantage of that on this chilly day. I love this place! I have lunch delivered once or twice a week and it's always tasty, warm, and on time if not early. My favorites so far are the salt and pepper shrimp and the eggplant with garlic sauce. Wednesday at about 7:00 PM. The place was hard to find because they have no sign outside. I drove past it and had to do a u turn to go back. I was the only customer in the place. I placed my order at the counter, 2 crispy spring rolls, a bowl of egg drop soup, and cashew shrimp. I also got a bottle of Pepsi. I ate in the restaurant. The food came in take out containers. The egg drop soup was very watery. It was as if they were running out and added water rather than making more. The Spring rolls were fine. The cashew shrimp had plenty of shrimp but could have used more cashews. The sauce was too thick and just seemed old. Vegetables were crisp and plentiful. Based on the food, I would give this place three stars. When I paid, I was charged $19.26. There was no receipt except for the credit card stub. I know I should have had an idea what things cost but I didn't. On their web site, the spring rolls are $2.69, The soup is $1.79, the entree with white rice is $7.79, and the drink is $1.79. That's $14.06 plus tax, which is .84. I should have been charged $14.90 but was overcharged by over $5.00. Not to mention I tipped 20% for counter service based on the overcharge. That's about 30% overcharge! A few cents or a dollar is a mistake. 30% is intentional, in my opinion. In my opinion, that person cheated me. If their actual prices had added up to $19.26, I wouldn't have said a thing. I'll be reimbursed by my company so I'm only out a little bit for the tip. It's about feeling cheated. By the way, you can actually order on their web site so the prices are accurate. Caveat Emptor at Chen's. PS, I noticed that a review from Feb, 2016 mentioned that their online prices are wrong. If that is so, they've had over 2 years to correct. Also, you can pay online. If I was to go back, which I will not, I would apparently save some dough by paying online. This is outstanding Chinese carryout/delivery! It doesn't have a fancy ambience, but it is clean, fast, cheap and delicious! The superfecta of satisfying carryout! It was very clean inside but you can tell they spent their money on something besides decorations. Who cares!? The food is great! The general tso's chicken was much more complex than a basic grocery store bottled sauce. The chicken had no grizzle and was perfectly cooked. We have previously had food delivered by Chen's Kitchen and it was fine. Last night, however, they delivered a duck that was ice cold and raw. This is reprehensible, dangerous, and illegal. In deference to their previous acceptable performance, I have decided not to contact the board of health, but I will never order from there again. Will never buy from here again. Used to order from here all the time, apparently they changed management and the food is disgusting. The Pad Thai is super spicy with a sauce they haven't included before, when we asked why it had originally looked different they said it was the same recipe- definitely not. With a purchase of $30 or more you can get a free fried rice, which we've done previously and have always loved. This time they served us rotten rice, it was literally inedible and had to be thrown out. The Lo Mein was the only okay dish we got. When we called they gave us an attitude and told us they could give us $5 off a next order- actually a joke. They claimed the rice was made 2 hours ago, it's definitely days old. And tried to act like the rice wasn't a big deal because it was free. Would not recommend at all, the new recipes and customer service have completely turned my family and I off this restaurant! This is my go-to Chinese restaurant for take out. I've been here many times. I usually order the same thing (curry chicken) but have tried a couple of other items. I'm surprised to see some terrible reviews posted here. I have never had a bad experience. This is definitely my favorite Chinese place in the Herndon / Reston area. My only complaint would be the times I've asked for brown rice and ended up with white rice instead. I had to chuckle about the "worst Chinese food." I am a bit of food snob and KNOW bad Chinese food. I once went to a place where the chicken was drenched in sauce that tasted like ketchup... Pure ketchup! The food I've had here has always been really flavorful. It is also very reasonably priced. Chen's isn't fancy by any means. I wouldn't suggest coming here if you're looking to go on a romantic date. Also, as a warning, WATCH YOUR STEP!!! There are steps in places you wouldn't normally expect steps to be. If you're not paying attention, it would be easy to fall and hurt yourself. Ok, this place is by far the best Chinese delivery in all of Herndon/Reston... at least of all the places I've had. None have been worth writing a review for yet (I prefer to only write reviews for places I enjoy, since I'm brand new at this whole "Yelping" thing). I give it 5 stars for these reasons... Value- Prices range from $6-$11 for entrees (small/large respectively), with most typical fare such as Orange Chicken, Chicken with Garlic Sauce, Beef w/ Broccoli, etc. all around $9 for the large. Let me tell you, the large will feed 2 normal adult males, or myself 1.5 sittings. So for value, you get a pretty good bang for your buck. Flava- that's right, I said it. Chicken with Garlic Sauce is how I judge all Chinese food places. Theirs is delicious! Spicy, but not crazy hot. Shredded pieces of chicken in homemade brown garlic sauce, with extremely fresh veggies such as onions, water chestnuts, and even mushrooms. Never had mushrooms in it before, but they were scrumptious. The entrees are all served with steamed or fried rice, for not additional charge. The Hot and Sour Soup is kicka$$ as well. Nice and spicy. The Egg Drop however, wasn't anything special. Not bad, but not knock your socks off good. The Beef with Broccoli was also good, and the Orange Chicken was amazing. Slivers of orange zest could be found in the sauce. Very fresh and flavorful. You could tell it was made to order. Service- Very nice on the phone, said it would be 35 mins, showed up in 25. What more can a man ask for? Oh yeah, duck sauce! They didn't include any for my spring rolls, but then again I didn't request it, and the economy IS in the $hitter, so I can understand their strategy... operationally at least. But from the customer's point of view, if they order 2 spring rolls, they expect some duck sauce. Correct me if I'm wrong. But all in all, I'll be back. I came here because a co-worker suggested I try it out. Luckily, I was in the food for Kung Pao Chicken. Also, this place is right down the street from my office. I walked in and just ordered the Kung Pao Chicken lunch combo and some Hot and Sour Soup. My soup came out piping hot. I noticed it had a nice dark color to it and had a nice aroma to it. Then I noticed that it was pretty thick. Maybe be just too much cornstarch or whatever thickener they used that day. I stirred it up and took a bite. It had a nice flavor to it, actually it was pretty tasty. For that, I'll over look the thickness of it. Soon the Kung Pao came out. It has a reddish color to it and some sort of green veggie in it. I'm wasn't too sure what it was. Oh well. I was starving, so I dug in. Flavor wise, it was o.k. nothing too special. Another Americanized version, it was however a little on the sweet side. I will have to find out what the green veggie was. The spring roll was pretty bland. A little on the greasy side. I didn't really look over the entire menu, so I'm not sure what other dishes they have. I will go give them another chance and try something else. Price was it was pretty good. I've been going here for years --- until recently. Food is very good with a great lunch menu. Last week I was in after the lunch rush for a pickup. While standing there, noted an elderly Chinese woman --- I'm not kidding here ---- clipping her toenails in the dining area! I pointed it out to owner who told her to stop (why did I need to point it out?) While I recognize we all clip nails, doing so in the public dining area of an eatery is just not right. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!! Worst place ever! They are out to scam other businesses and very unethical. I don't know how other folks on the reviews are even giving it above a 2 star unless they are getting paid to do it. Here is what happened: I ordered food for a company outing and the over charged us for the Group A pricing, didn't get the 5th item that was suppose to be on the menu, and the noodles (which everyone in the company complained about) smelled like cigarettes probably due to the fact they burnt the food. All the other items that we received were horrible as well. Her justification was "we gave you more of the other stuff. I was just dumbfounded at this point and argued that she didnt call us to tell us we would not receive the 5th item and that whether it was okay to substitute more of the other items we were already receiving. My secretary complained and the lady that picked up the phone kept telling her to call back at another time. When we asked to speak to the owner, she said he did not speak English. We had a hard time understanding a word she was also saying so I knew communication was going to be a challenge. Funny, as soon as I said I wanted to credit back she was able to start negotiating the price and pretty good English. She haggled with me for 10 mins. She would not give the appropriate amount of $$ back that we requested which in all honesty was a fair amount we were asking. Fantastic. Delivery driver is wonderful and always polite. The food is fantastic and arrives within 25 mins after the order is placed and is never cold and is always fresh...deliver is super fast! Simple, easy, quick. Meat looked far from fresh. Very dry, very salty. It had a consistency of beef jerky. Some bits I wouldn't eat given the color was dark and looked at if it was not chicken. I eat at a lot of Chinese fast food places and this is probably the worst one I've been to in the area thus far. As a Chinese person, my parents always taught me that you can tell how good a Chinese restaurant is (even if they are serving Americanized Panda Express-style fare) based on how good the Hot and Sour Soup is. Naturally, when I went there for lunch, I decided to order the soup to try it out. It came out watery, bland, and tasted like it had been made with one of those cheap 50 cent packets of soup mix from the grocery store. That set off some alarms for me, but I decided that the main dish I ordered (Crispy Shredded Chicken over white rice) might change my mind about the place. Nope, not even close. The Crispy Shredded Chicken is even listed on the menu under the Chef's Specialties. I thought to myself, "wow, if it's a chef specialty it MUST be good!" It came out as little strips of SUPER crispy (almost to the point where I couldn't even tell it was chicken, it might as well have been crispy pieces of fried dough) chicken drenched in an overly sweet Sesame sauce, stir-fried with little cuts of celery and carrot. I was able to stomach around 1/3 of it before I couldn't take it anymore and disposed of it, then went somewhere else to get an actual lunch. I cannot recommend this place to anyone, unless you're ready to be disappointed by cheap Chinese fast food that you didn't have high expectations for anyway. Ugh. read more

I love chen's kitchen. My family has been coming here for over 15 years. Although we don't frequently it as much as we used to because we don't eat out as much anymore, it's still one of the best Chinese food places we've ever been to. Some things I or my family like: Vegetable spring rolls, Hunan chicken, tofo general tso, general tso chicken, seseme chicken, chicken fried rice, vegetable fried rice, clung pao chicken, shezusuan chicken (excuse my spelling). The problem with many Chinese restaurants is that they tend to make their food bland. But, chen's kitchen always makes their food flavorful. Plus, the routes are great! I really, really wanted to like this place, since the good go-to Chinese place in my area recently closed down (Mama Wok) and I've been looking for a replacement. I've ordered from them twice, and both times the food was average. The dumplings--which is the main reason I order Chinese--are below average, and not even worth ordering. But the fried rice, Singapore noodle, and chicken dish my boyfriend and I have tried were good. The reason for my low-star review, is for something that happened on our 2nd order which in my opinion Chen's Kitchen showed horrible customer service. We ordered online, and I ordered fried rice. When the food finally came, it was lo mein instead. I called them, and had to explain what had happened about 5 times before they understood. They were making me confirm my order number, didn't recognize my address, it was all a mess and really annoying. I asked them if they could EITHER bring me the correct order of fried rice, OR simply remove the fried rice from my bill. They opted to have the driver come back out and bring the rice, which, fine, everybody makes mistakes--but right before I hung up, they asked me to give the lo mein back to the driver! I could not believe that they would ask this, showing 1) they didn't believe me and thought I was trying to scam some free rice off them, *eyeroll*, so they were making me PROVE it was the wrong item, and 2) what were they going to do with cold lo mein that another customer had already opened?! Obviously throw it away. GOOD customer service would've been for them to apologize (which they didn't) and tell me to feel free to keep the lo mein and they'd have my correct order out to me as soon as possible. I am a potential new regular customer and in that one move they just lost my future business. I thought at the very least, maybe the driver would see the lo mein and tell me, "just keep it," but he didn't! He took it away with him, and I got my main entree two hours after I'd ordered it, once my boyfriend was already done eating. It was just one of those fuck-ups that kinda ruins your dinner that night, and then for them to have me give them back the food they messed up on just to throw it away--not a good look guys. read more

I've been getting takeout and/or delivery from Chen's several times a month for years and loved their food in the past. But, I've noticed a distinct decline in quality over the last 18 months. Too bad, I've always liked their food and it is in a handy location. I don't know if they have new cooks or what, but everything is hit or miss. My go-to telltales are hot and sour soup, crispy salted duck and combo fried rice. The H&S has recently become very sketchy, usually not enough Chinese vinegar and sometimes too spicy. Although it was great in the past (by the way, you can go into the Bestway market over by the Tortilla Factory and get a bottle of Black Chinese Vinegar if you want to enhance your H&S soup). The fried rice is not seasoned well and the crispy duck has been overly greasy, although with good flavor. I am going to try out some of the other Chinese restaurants locally to see if I can find something better. Has anybody else noticed any changes? read more
