It's a beautifully done restaurant - lots of dining space. Our favorite is the bar area. The banquette allows us to see all the sports on the tv screens, and it's a great place for people watching. The service was great & the food was delicious. The one blip was when we first entered, the young-ish man at the host desk looked at us with a "What are you doing here?" grimace. I was stunned since the hosts are usually very happy to see patrons come in. Beyond that, though, we had a lovely time. Our server was quite friendly and got hubs customized Cuban order just right. I had the killer tomato basil soup and tasty grilled cheese. I also got an order to go of the Buffalo Chicken wrap. It was yummy the next day for lunch. We hadn't been to NYAJ's in years. I went 2 weeks before it shut down. Not sure if that was why the service was poor and food not hot or tasty, but was disappointed all around. The environment and ambiance is the same as it always was, but it was slow with a clear doom feeling. The cost of the food was too much, which may also be why they did not make it. This was my first time at this Reston location. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was pleasant. I love the fact that the parking is by the building unlike most businesses in the area where you have to park in a garage, pay, and walk. That feature alone will bring me back. I chose the Lobster Mac and Cheese. It was a very generous portion. It had good flavor but could have had more sauce as it was just a little on the dry side. I ordered takeout and picked it up close to when they were closing. The staff was pleasant and it was ready when I arrived. The food was of the right temperature. The chicken dumplings where served in a citrus soy bath, so sour on the taste buds it made me pucker. Additionally, upsettingmy stomach all night. Suggestion put the sauce on the side. They also lacked the crunch associated with dumplings. No sure if they were not cooked or the citrus soy bath damped the experience. The Waldorf Salad was as expected. I've visited Not Your Average Joe's several times over the years, and I am always satisfied with the food and service. I meet some old friends at this restaurant fairly often and we are always well taken care of. We often have Caesar as our waiter and he has been there a long time, and always does a great job. He is polite, friendly, professional and attentive. The food is good. I don't know if I would say there is anything fantastic about it, but I have never had a bad meal there. I've had the chicken parm, the Cuban sandwich, burgers, and salads and everything had been tasty and freshly prepared. I love a good Cuban sandwich and NYAJ's is a good one, and they are one of the few restaurants with a Waldorf salad on the menu, so I have ordered that several times. My only critique of that would be, I wish it had the candied pecans that are listed as an ingredient on the menu, but the last 3 times I have had that salad, they have been missing. I also love the French onion soup there, as well as many of the appetizers. You really do not have to worry about getting a bad meal at Not Your Average Joe's, it's very reliable. read more

We came in as a large group. It was great that they have the capacity to accommodate a large party over 30 people. One of the servers displayed his discontent when we asked him for water. It made us feel uncomfortable to ask for anything else which doesn't seem to be the right kind of experience when you are customer dinning in. I ordered the Mustard crusted chicken BLT on a toasted chibatta with fries and slaw. My order was mediocre which was quite disappointing given the name of the restaurant and that chicken sandwiches have been recently hyped across most fast food and regular establishments. If it is on the menu, it should be worthy of competing with the standard. They also forgot the slaw and when I reminded them, it was brought out in a tiny sauce container where the ketchup goes in. It was sad. I also saw what the others ordered and it was underwhelming. One woman said her steak was overdone and seemed tough to chew. Since we were a large party, an automatic 20% gratuity was charged to the bill. Other than the fact that the establishment can accommodate large parties, there wasn't anything special that would bring us back based on the service and food quality. We have been going to this place for many years. It was our go to place for Good American fare. We used to enjoy their fresh bread and olive oil dip and their freshly prepared salads and their food was consistently good. In the past many years, it seems like they've tried to cut costs and no longer serve fresh bread and it's often served still frozen and many of the foods feel like and taste like they were prepared elsewhere and also frozen and reheated. The chicken that I had on my salad last night tasted chunky and had almost a little bit of a gritty consistency. That one gets when the food is frozen and reheated. The flavor was bland at best. Not the fresh fare that they once had. The prices are much more expensive than they were even a few years ago and the food quality has gone down steadily. Started dinner with a tasty blackened shrimp cocktail. Nice Cajun spicing... amazing guacamole... tasty siracha cocktail sauce! Our main we selected the filet medallions.... Perfectly cooked and so tender I actually used my butter knife to cut them. I'm not a fan of broccolini but hubby likes... I know I could have swapped out if I wanted. The red wine pepper sauce and rosemary creminis worked well. Only failure IMO is that while they were on tasty MASHED potatoes.... I really wanted SMASHED as advertised. Asked manager about this and he was gonna check... initial comment is they only do mashed... it's a different product and I'm hoping just a oversight as today is day 1 of the new seasonal specials. I come here often enough when I'm looking a solid restaurant, good location and free/easy parking, reliable service, nice cocktail options, with a regular and seasonal menu that accommodates most of my friends' varied dietary needs (GF, vegetarian, pescatarian, etc.). It does not disappoint. We had a painkiller and a watermelon cucumber margarita as our cocktail options. Both are very good. My margarita had a little too much ice and not enough drink IMO, and when I ask for a salted rim can you salt the whole thing rather than one square inch of it? They give you delicious focaccia bread over a cheese/red pepper flaked dipping oil that's to die for. Be careful because it's so easy to fill up on it, it's so addictive! We tried the whipped feta appetizer. Recommend that you get it for the table to split because it's definitely on the large side. Didn't care for the "sesame crisps", but the cucumber slices and pita bread paired well with the whipped feta, and the garbanzo bean topping was tasty. We had two of the newly unveiled Oktoberfest options--pork Schnitzel with red cabbage and potato pancake for me; drunken bratwurst over mashed potatoes for my friend. The schnitzel dish looked lovely, but it honestly lacked any kind of flavor... not the potato pancake, and not the schnitzel breading or meat. The best part about it was the red cabbage in my opinion (I'm a fan.) Service was prompt, and we had no problems getting a table at 5:45 PM on a Thursday. By the time we left at 7 PM, it had started to get busier; so if you have a large party, or you just don't like to wait long for your food, go on the earlier side of the dinner shift. read more

Upsides? Great lunch spot -- love the seasonal menu - especially the butternut squash/Brussel sprout flatbread. Easy parking. Broad menu. Our waiter Mason even convinced the manager to oblige a small off-menu request. Food here is reliably yummy. Love the welcome bread cone and cheesy olive oil spread. Downsides? They always seem a little under staffed at lunch -- service is always a tad slow. The iced tea refill was ice-less, room temperature and weak. I live 1/2 mile from this restaurant and have never stopped in until today. I was in the mood for a quick lunch while sitting at a bar and figured that I would be able to accomplish that here so I stopped in to give it a try. I was immediately greeted by the bartender and provided menus and he then swiftly took my drink order and gave me a few minutes to look over the menu. The menu had lots of options but I was in the mood for a lighter lunch a went with the Cobb Salas but asked to sun salmon for the chicken. This wasn't a problem and the salad arrived pretty quickly. It looked absolutely amazing and tasted the same! The salad was chock full of all the ingredients and all were well seasoned and perfectly dressed. My only wish is that they asked me how I would've like my salmon prepared because they cooked it a bit under for my liking and I ate around the pieces that were too rare. All in all it was a great lunch and I'll now be sure to head back in to try dinner! read more

I decided to go in and have lunch here after a couple years of hiatus. I made an advanced reservation for lunch and our table was reserved when we came the next day. Our waiter was very friendly and not overly pushy and thus the service was pretty good and the food arrived on time. I ordered the teriyaki salmon bowl, which was average. The fish was cooked well but the rice was not very tasty, oily, and undercooked. My guest ordered a salad bowl and was not super thrilled with the taste and only ate half of the serving. Tonight hubby and I had a great dinner at Not Your Average Joe's. Our meal started with the house bread, which was accompanied by a yummy garlic and olive oil topping. For our main courses, hubby ordered the chicken pot pie off the specials menu, whereas I ordered the steak tips but asked to swap broccoli for spinach. Our food was delicious! The steak was cooked perfectly (medium well) and the mashed potatoes and broccoli were great additions! Hubby's pot pie was fantastic on a cold night! Between the flaky crust and the generous amount of peas and carrots, it hit the spot. For dessert, we spit the peanut butter thing, which is literally the name of it. It was also yummy and highly recommended by our server. Speaking of our server, his name is Dante and he was very friendly and attentive. He even gave us extra bread to take home! Our only complaint is that the restaurant was very cold. Yes, it's winter, but the heat could have been turned up more. When will we be back, you ask. Hopefully soon! read more

I have a friend that I meet for dinner in Reston (the halfway point between us) just about once a month. We have tried lots of places in RTC, but this is one of the places we gob to most often. We have always had great servers here - very personable, attentive, and good "recommenders" of dishes and substitutions. First off, the bread!!!! And the garlicky, herby, olive oil dip!! Why didn't I include pictures in this review... because it never lasts long enough to capture a picture. It is delicious foccacia bread - crusty on the outside and doughy inside. So good. My friend and I talk about how much we crave this bread. We both typically get salads (to save more room for bread! - no, seriously). We both enjoy the supercrunch salad - I've gotten it with salmon several times and once with crispy chicken. Both were great,depending on my mood. Well...I can honestly say that we were less than impressed with this establishment since the very first impression we were left with was a very disgusting dirty plate of crumbs that was supposed to be CLEAN for our fresh bread to arrive! WORST restaurant experience in a long time and the cost is far too high for the issues we encountered. There were six people in the restaurant when we entered after 3 p.m. to grab lunch between an appointment and returning to the office. The young lady at the front supplied the menus and silverware; otherwise, we may have never received them. The server appeared after a ten minute wait, took our order and disappeared. What followed was an interminable wait for our drinks. We ordered salads to start, to be followed by a pizza and a chicken BLT. A half hour later the food arrived. Salads along with our entrees. No apology offered for everything coming out at once. That was the last we saw of our server. We tried several times to catch her attention and she looked right through us as if we did not exist. We needed extra napkins and we finally had to ask the bartender for them. The food was good but we could not finish it because we simply ran out of time with all the server shenanigans. We had to leave to return to the office and after yet another wait I finally had to walk across the entire restaurant and caught her doing nothing standing in front of the kitchen order counter (where no one could see her and she could not see any customers). She seemed surprised to see me and trailed by after another five minutes to drop off the bill and a requested box. Due to the fact that I waited tables throughout college and also due to the poor economy my husband I make a point of tipping 50% of the bill unless that does not amount to much and then we add to the amount, with an average tip for two being between $40 to $50. I left a $10 tip but it would have been a great deal more if the server had showed any interest in doing her job. We left with one diner left in the restaurant. On the way out, the manager looked up from lounging on the half wall playing on his phone to exhort us to return. You. Have. To. Be. Kidding. I repeat this because he may have not have heard us over the booming soundtrack playing that echoed throughout the empty restaurant. Sad Joe's. read more

Then they placed their order. The cheeseburger was fine, nothing to write home about. But the poke bowl was so bland! The tuna was supposedly marinated but it had no flavor to it, and the sriracha mayo sauce they put on top didn't help. Only recently have we done take out here. In the past, we would dine inside. After COVID hit, they closed down for a while, then reopened and at first, only did takeout. As our area entered the various phases, they graduated to outdoor dining. What prompted us to give their take out menu a try was the banner flying outside announcing that they had lobster. It turned out that the "lobster" was in the form of a lobster roll. Since I hadn't had lobster in any forum for months, that was good reason to place a take out order :) My husband didn't care for their ordering online set up. They really push you to open an account with them. He tried entering our cc info and the only way they would take it would be if you opened an account, which he did. Also take note that even though you go to their Reston location webpage, you still have to use a drop down menu to find Reston. Otherwise, you could end up ordering at some other NYAJ out of state! The first time we ordered, in addition to the lobster roll, we ordered the "backyard cheeseburger" which consists of: "our classic burger on a martin's potato roll with white cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickle". You can add bacon for $1. The lobster roll was on a New England style roll and came with fries and a tiny container of slaw. This was a seasonal menu item. Now that it is fall, it's no longer available. So...the lobster roll was middle of the road. Meaning, I've had worse but also have had far better. It seemed to have more filler than lobster. My husband was pleased that his burger was cooked as he asked. However, he didn't order bacon but it was given to him anyway. The burger appeared to be an 8 oz. one, which he found to be very filling. The second time we ordered, we both got the New England Haddock, which consists of: "traditional style, herb crusted and baked, served with mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli and tartar sauce". We both liked this dish. The haddock was perfectly prepared as it was tender and flaky. The mashed potatoes were made fresh in house and the broccoli was cooked tender crisp. My husband also ordered Joe's house salad which consists of: "mixed greens, cucumbers, red onion, tomatoes, carrots, house-made focaccia croutons, choice of dressing". There was no way on the online menu to specify your choice of dressing. He was given a vinaigrette dressing. That salad was huge! While I ate some, he ate the rest and could barely finish his dinner. Both times we ordered, we were given some complimentary focaccia and dipping sauce, which we always enjoy. They do delivery but we live very close by and for us, it was much easier and faster to just pick up our orders. We will be back for more take out. Mediocre. My husband and I usually go to the their Woodbridge location and have never had a complaint, but we were in the area and decided to check try this one out. Sadly, our biggest upset were that the burgers were not "juicy" or "saucy". Surprisingly, the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich was even drier than than the Impossible Caprese Burger. You'd expect a Pulled Pork Sandwich to be dripping in juicy BBQ gold, but unfortunately this one did not make the cut. The Impossible Caprese Burger was decent, but still seemed to be lacking a key ingredient or sauce that should pull it all together. My favorite item on the plate were the fries. The servers were nice, but the service took a while. The restaurant was not at it's peak hour and it took a while for the food to come out.
