I have the experience to say that Hunan Café the one in Herndon is the best of the :Hunan Cafe " chain or franchise. Impecable clean, the ladies at frontal desde are welll mannered and cordial and the food is very taste. If you want to eat there, they serve you in China bowls and real forks or chop stiks. No MSG Chinese food, which sounds nice for those who are sensitive/allergic to it. However, the flavors are bland and could benefit from MSG or at least some salt. The noodle and rice combination gets a bit soggy from the oil. Mooshu pork was a bit flavorless but still satisfying portion wise. Came with some fortune cookies which are nice. It's an okay Chinese spot for me, nothing particularly special, but good for when you want a reasonably priced dinner. read more

Staying across the street at a hotel and happened to stop by and found this Chinese restaurant for dinner. The manager was very friendly and kind. The seafood noodle soup was very tasty. Rarely will you see me get Chinese carry out but today was busy at work and crave something fast. Lunch general tso chicken lunch special 4/5 ($9.75)- The general tso chicken was good but the it come with fried rice that was basic dry fried with soy sauce. I wish she would had ask me if i want white rice or fried rice because nothing turn me off but fried rice with ghetto soy sauce just not for me. Hot sour soup small 2/5 ($3.75)- So disappointing it was hot in temperature but no savory or sour or spicy it in at all. This used to be my go to restaurant for quality, fresh and excellent Chinese food. Yesterday I ordered and picked up an order. Hunan Cafe has cheap seating and it's not for suitable to eat there. The food tasted and smelled absolutely horrible. Too bad I noticed the smell when I was on the way home. The spring rolls were inedible and tasted like mold. We ordered two other dinner sized main dishes. I don't think the beef was actually beef. The chicken tasted like disinfectant. I'm not exaggerating. I believe they changed management. I recommend not even considering this place when ordering Chinese food. It was a total waste of money and it will be for you, too. read more

Still love their food - favorites: Green beans w/pork - cooked szechuan style with no spices (she sometimes giggles when I order it), chicken with corn soup (an egg drop style chicken soup - perfect when I've got a cold or my stomach is upset - I freeze the left-over then add it to my own chicken-vegetable soups). Mr. loves Shrimp with lobster sauce, Moo Goo Gai Pan & their egg drop soup. Over the years, our favorites have changed but the friendly, quick, competent service remains consistent, the food hot, the prices competitive. I was disappointed with my whole order. The crab Rangoon was completely stuffed with cream cheese barely any of the other ingredients esp. the crab. The shrimp fried rice was not fresh. The rice seemed like it was recooked after sitting from earlier that day. The spare pork ribs was the worst I've ever had and didn't seem fresh either. I ate some of the shrimp fried rice but ended up throwing everything away and ate cereal for dinner. read more

Ew... The Lo Mein had a funky taste to it, and the Kung Pao Chicken tasted gooey and messy. The only thing that I had that was any good was the wonton soup. That tasted really good and the crispy noodles inside were absolutely a delight. But other than that it was an expensive foray of food that bordered on disgusting or somehow I was eating some meat from the day before. It just had that kind of taste to it. After we got doorhanged with one of their menus, we took a look and liked what we saw. So...we said, "Let's go tomorrow for dinner". Plus they already had one favorable review. We got here on a Friday night between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. It's mostly a take-out joint and there were a few people waiting for their orders. Since we knew what we wanted to eat, we went up to the counter and told the young woman what we wanted, plus we let her know we would eat there. There is a counter with silverware (both real and plastic), plates, cups, etc. plus condiments. In addition, there was an urn with free hot Chinese tea---a nice touch. First, we had hot and sour soup. It had a lot of stock in it but had an unusual undercurrent of sweetness to it. While it did have some heat, it wasn't apparently obvious, instead it snuck up on you. For an appetizer, we tried the fried chicken wings. They were brought to our table piping hot. These wings were large and meaty. Yet when it came to flavor, they were rather bland. My husband got the chicken with garlic sauce. It was spicy though the garlic flavoring was faint. However, the dish was attractive and had plenty of fresh vegetables in it with carrots seemingly being the main vegetable component. I got the egg foo young. This was a dish I hadn't had in years. These days, it's not often seen on Chinese restaurant menus. It took longer to cook than my husband's chicken dish. Yet it came to the table as soon as it was done cooking. There was much too much food on my plate---three large egg foo young patties. It could have easily fed three people. I got it with chicken and the chicken portion was generous, plus there was a good amount of mixed vegetables. While it was decent, I have had far better. When things slowed down in the place, the woman behind the counter came out to ask how things were. She also noted that we took pictures. My husband told her that the pictures were going on Yelp :). Then (I believe) the manager came out to ask how everything was. So...to sum up---excellent service, friendly staff, decent prices (our dinner for two cost $26.05) but so-so food. read more

So after reeding some of the good and bad reviews, it's a 3 star place. What people say is somewhat true. The crab rangoons are almost completely empty. The WHITE meat chicken looks dark, very dry and over cooked. The Sauces taste good. Good rice. Thin rice noodles are a little dry, the beef is very good and tender. The delivery was fast. More then likely will look for another Chinese. read more

This is a hidden gem in the area. We tried all the standard dishes (General Tso, Beef with Broccoli, Hunan Chicken, Lo Mein, Soups), and they were all top notch. All dishes were very tastefully savory without being overly salty, and all vegetables were fresh. Definitely my new go to place in the time where there aren't too many good take out places (or Chinese restaurants) to go to. If you are looking for some decent Chinese dish at a reasonable price, it does not get better than this place. All ingredients are fresh, and all the dishes were very good. The place also serves noodle soups, which is not something you often find at a take out location. Definitely trying it out next time. Thought we'd try something new, sorry that we did. Sweet & sour soup was bland; It was overpowered with canned mushrooms; I have never had mushrooms in sweet and sour soup, no flavor. Crab ragones were dry and nothing but air inside, maybe a 1/2 tsp. of filling. The egg rolls were so small, the size of a marker, and doughy inside, could not eat. The entrees were so, so. Nothing to go Wow about. I will continue to order from ChopSticks in Herndon, at least I know the food is great and you have great service. I just thought I'd try something new; was I sorry. Man, I love Hunan Cafe. First off, let me first explain what kind of restaurant this cafe is. Hunan Cafe is your run of the mill Chinese restaurant. You walk in, there's maybe a handful of small tables that can probably seat 20-30 people at capacity. Most of its business probably comes in the form of carry out or delivery. But where HC differs from every other Chinese restaurant of this sorts is its food. The cafe offers over 50 familiar Chinese entrees complete with pictures of every dish on their wall. Every item I've tried here has been delicious. And being that everything is cooked in the hot steaming woks in the kitchen, you'll have your meal in about 10 minutes (if you don't order ahead of time). I love their dishes. My personal favorites are the Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, General Tso's anything, Sweet and Sour anything, Shrimp toast, etc. etc. etc. As I said before, literally everything I've tried has been good. Considering that before HC opened, there used to be another Chinese restaurant in this location that never got any business, it's been a breath of fresh air to see this new restaurant serving such great food. I hope this place isn't slipping! Sorry to say their Kung Pao Chicken is no longer good. Had it today and it was gross. It was more like some of the other local joints that like to fry the crap out of the chicken so it is crispy and then just put sauce on it. It was crunchy and oily and didn't have a lot of flavor. Also it was about 90% chicken and very little tiny cut up pieces of zucchini and bamboo. That may be what some people are looking for.... but to me it made the dish boring because every bite was the same; crispy, flavorless, greasy chicken. I would rate this dish I got today 1 star... but I know everything else I have had from there has made me happy... so I'm only knocking off 1 star. I'm sad. From now on I'll probably stick with their Double Cook Pork, Hunan entrees, and their yummy Beef Noodle Soups. Also to note... I grew up in Singapore so my standards on REAL chinese food might differ from others. I love cantonese cuisine and typically do not enjoy the "americanised" chinese food that you find at China King or any place that says "peking" on it. I was doing my manicure just next door and it was lunchtime so figured its convenient. Walked right into the cafe and was pleasantly surprised that the place was very clean and INVITING - very unusual for a small chinese takeout place. Most chinese takeout places I've gone to are just tired looking and do not have much of any ambience but this was different. It felt like a starbucks. You can picture yourself sitting here with friends over lunch - simple cosy environment. I walked up, got a menu and was thrilled that they had a whole page dedicated to NOODLE SOUPS. Wow, I got excited! When I say noodle soups, I don't mean soups like egg drop or hot & sour in the appetizer section which the last reviewer was talking about. I mean a hearty asian flavored clear broth soup with vegetables and meat as a meal. I ordered the "Light Beef Noodle Soup" which was basically a clear broth vs the regular version.(light = less greasy) I was blown away by how delicious the soup turned out. Lots of udon-style handmade usually find at chinese takeouts (its usually just cabbage, snow peas and more snowpeas etc). The dish was hearty but not as greasy and yummy! We all know chinese takeouts are usually loaded with oil and fat but I guess they really meant it when they said they were going for the healthy niche market. I'm only writing a complimentary review because I want them to stay in business. I would definitely come back!! It was just a few miles from my home so that was even better! If you have never tried anything else other than "Kung Pao Chicken or General Tso's Chicken", try any one of their noodle soups - go for the chicken or beef noodle soups if you're less adventurous. And for $8.95 I think they are worth the price plus its healthier than any of the other options. UPDATE: 23 May 2011 Since my first review, I've gone back there a couple times. Tried the stir fry udon noodles, slightly disappointed as it was too greasy. I would still go for the soups. Did a takeout and I took a picture of how the soup looks - yummy huh? This is a pretty standard Chinese takeout place with a pretty standard menu but with the addition of a few Thai dishes. Intrigued by the latter, I ordered the pork pad kee mao. This dish had broad rice noodles, some pork, and some peppers. It wasn't nearly as spicy as indicated on the menu but I thought it was okay.
