Let's be clear. Oriental Express is what it is -- a takeout joint specializing in bland, American-style Chinese food. It's what you might get to feed a family on a budget when you're too tired to cook and want leftovers for the next day. That being said, the quality is quite good, the prices are reasonable, the portions are good, and as a bonus, they will customize any dish any way you like (sauce, spice level, etc.). The dishes we've tried here have generally been UNDERseasoned -- that is, they could use a little more salt, MSG, soy sauce, garlic, whatever the dish calls for. But hey, I can fix that. A Great Chinese Restaurant with the best prices and selections in the area. The lunch special dishes ( favorable & well portioned) came with a meat & cabbage egg roll and your choice of a soda or soup. My shrimp with broccoli was made fresh to order with light sauce and delicious. My hot and sour soup was packed with tofu, mushrooms, and bamboo. I also received a free chili oil at no charge too. TL;DR: Specifically ordered here because a few recent good reviews are clearly bots or AI generated. Wanted to add a human review, so we ordered a mix. Was mediocre at best. Fried rice: tasted funny. Can't pinpoint what it was, but I couldn't eat it with the strange aftertaste. Threw it away. Normally if fried rice is mid I'll just use it as a base to cook my own, but this was tossed. Sweet and Sour Chicken: flashback to the 90s. Not overly battered. Would've been crispy without being up against rice, which steamed it. Sauce was thick, very throwback. Separate packaging would've made a big difference. Egg Rolls: had visible whole shrimp, and meat. Was surprising. Not bad, but it's also not my favorite type. If you like that, I recommend trying it. Hot and Sour Soup: gelatinous, which I hate. Really fresh mushrooms, though. Those were great. Wonton Soup: crazy artificial yellow colored broth that tasted of nothing. Ordered sesame chicken dinner combo with crab wontons. Over $25 with delivery just for two things... Chicken is horrible, my two year old won't eat it either. During the pandemic lockdown, we looked around for a take out restaurant and remembered Oriental Express. We ordered moo shu pork and "kung pao twice". Kung pao twice has chicken and shrimp. It was fairly good, plenty of shrimp, good chicken, but not enough peanuts. The flavor was good but could have been spicier. The moo shu pork was ok. It had a lot of cabbage which we like. I love this place. I admit I have a sentimental attachment to it as well, because it was me and my late father's go-to Chinese food place. When we first moved to centreville from Dunn loring, I was afraid we weren't going to find a place whose fried rice I liked better than my then-current Chinese place. Now, I can't even remember the place I used to go to! I myself have moved back to the Tyson's corner area, but I still come out to centreville specifically for their egg fried rice, no vegetables (I'm basically still 5 years old and hate my vegetables). Put some Tabasco on it and it's just amazing. I remember their kung pao chicken has a lot of peanuts. It was a good balance of sweet and spicy but I prefer spicy. If you do too, ask them to add more chili peppers. It's not much of a place to dine in. There are only two tables of four; the store front is pretty small. Not sure I know many people who eat fast Chinese food at the actual restaurant itself though. There's a fridge of some coke and Pepsi products. The portions are plentiful and the price is cheap and the food is tasty. What more can you ask for? read more

So I got dinner here today to go. I ordered the Hot and Sour Soup and the Hunan Chicken. The menu indicated the Hunan Chicken is a spicy dish - which I am always looking for. It took them about 5 minutes to whip out my food. While I was waiting, I noticed an envelope sitting on the counter - all addressed, stamped, and ready to go for the U.S. Postal Service. The recipient? The Fairfax County Health Department - Environmental Services. That really inspires confidence! I took my food home and it was very, very average. Less than average. The Hunan Chicken was chicken, with broccoli and onions in a brown sauce. It had little flavor and was not spicy at all. The Hunan Chicken I've had at other Chinese restaurants contained a wider variety of vegetables. The soup was also just very plain and blah. I was disappointed. Delivery didn't take too long and arrived within 30 minutes. The dumplings and general tso tasted good but it wasn't crispy at all and more on the soggy-side. The general tso's flavor was good but breading was a bit doughy. Lo Mein was not bad, but I'm not too picky when it comes to lo mein. Ordered for the first time last weekend and it was ok. My boys enjoyed the dishes they ordered (fried rice and a szechuan chicken), but my dish of hunan chicken tasted funny. The chicken had an odd texture and I found a couple pieces of bone in my food. It was only mine, I tried the other dishes and they were fine. Our got to place for Chinese take out. They are very consistent with quality. They have the best General Tso chicken around in my opinion. The portions are good for the price. Food was pretty awful. I wouldn't say it's the worst Chinese carryout I have ever tried, but it's pretty close. I got Thai Fried Rice and Kung Pao chicken. Both were awful, Thai Fried Rice was just plain fried rice made using the cheapest rice grain that can be found and tasted terrible. Kung Pao chicken was just fried chicken nuggets that was super salty with some peanuts thrown on there. There weren't any vegetables in the Kung Pao chicken like you get at every other Chinese carryout. If I had to describe the cooking at this place using one word, it would be lazy. Team at work ordered delivery from here. We had a large variety: walnut shrimp, fried tofu, general tsos, shrimp and veggies, beef and broccoli, and Singapore noodles. The General Tsos was saucy to me, but I usually feel this way about all take out. The Tofu has great texture and absorbed the sauce nicely. The best part was the Singapore noodles. I have lived in Centreville for 7 1/2 years now, and this is the ONLY decent Chinese food place I have found around here! I come from Massachusetts and New York state where delicious Chinese restaurants seem to abound, and this place is the most similar to the restaurants I grew up with. I absolutely LOVE the crispy beef, and my friends that had the cripsy chicken YEARS ago while they were visiting from Maryland still mention how good it was whenever I see them. My husband gets the General Tso's chicken, and is happy with it every time. We also order from here almost every time my parents are staying with us, and no one is ever disappointed. I've never had anything I didn't like, and they are very quick to deliver. I think this is definitely the best Chinese food around here. read more

BUYER BEWARE - ONLINE ORDER This place is the biggest crock of crapola for online Chinese food delivery in the area. So here is the deal, I went to their Website and ordered from there (not from yelp) and their site has coupons based on how much you spend. I ordered 3 dinner combos and 2 appetizers + steamed vegetables totaling over $40. It "unlocked" a Free General Tso dinner and a button to add that to cart. I did, this was going to be the 4th dinner we needed. Delivery comes - No General Tsos. I called them and got some bs runaround that if I clearly read the paper menu it says no coupons with combos - I told them it was an ONLINE ORDER from THEIR WEBSITE and it had no disclaimer, even unlocked the button for me to add it to cart. All they said was that's too bad, its not "their website" (which is bogus it is their website). Never never again. There are 3 or 4 crappy Chinese delivery places in this town, next time Ill spend my money on one of the other 3 or bump it up 10% and order from Charlie Chiangs (marginally the best). ***Update*** I would not recommend Charlie Chiangs either, you can check ot my review on their page, crappy crappy experience - both of these places are for the dogs **** Net net - Do *not* order from this place online, its a joke. I ordered chicken wing (appetizer), combination egg foo young, combination lo mein, mu shu beef, and curry beef. Frankly, I'd rather Kibbles & Bits. 1. Wings--bland, was re-battered and re-fried. 2. Combination Egg Foo Young--OK, but edges were chewy, like a Nylabone. 3. Combination Lo Mein--I counted 3 small shrimps, maybe 4 strands of chicken, 2 strands of beef, but plenty noodles. 4. Mu-Shu Beef--soggy and unusual odor. The pancakes were flour tortillas. 5. Curry Beef--more like Curry Onions that accidentally included some beef pieces.
