This is American Chinese food that works if you're craving it, but they do some dishes better than others. This place does have seating, but most people order takeout. When you walk in, you can order at the counter with a person or a kiosk. It'll take 10-15 minutes for your order to be ready if you order in the restaurant, but it comes out piping hot and the containers are jam packed with food. We ordered the combination kao pad kapow (spicy fried rice), combination lo mein, and general tso's chicken. The kao pad kapow was just normal fried rice with jalapeños, nothing special. I will say every time I've ordered any variation of fried rice here, I've been disappointed because it's always bland and under-seasoned. The lo mein is great, it's exactly what you expect from Chinese takeout. The general tso's chicken is also pretty good, the sauce flavor isn't that strong but I don't mind when eating it with everything else. Overall, it's solid takeout that will hit the spot. read more

They have a cash promotion on their app (ex: spend $30 and pay for it in cash for free crab Rangoons). It is indeed not entirely free-- I prepared cash to pay for my order, but there was a discrepancy. Online it said my total would be $20.85, but when I got there, he charged me $23.79. They calculate everything, including the supposed "free" Rangoons, taxing everything, then subtracting the cost of Rangoons, excluding the added tax. As far as Chinese food takeout or Chinese food in general, it's not a standout but none of the restaurants in the DMV that I've tried have been anything like the restaurants in CA or NY. But the BLUF remains: Hot, fresh, good portions, fair prices, hits the spot. Even in tight times & higher prices, they still don't skimp on the meat. Portions are somewhat smaller, but one still will not walk away hungry...even with a lunch special. It's not a spot where you'll linger with friends and family for a pleasant lunch or dinner, but it remains a good reliable neighborhood takeout joint. This is a solid strip mall American-Chinese place. Can you find better in NOVA? Sure. Better in Centreville? Not that I've found. If you're looking for fried rice or lo mein or orange chicken, you can do much worse. You can call to order, but the last few times I called no one answered, so I ordered through their site where you can actually earn redeemable points. They do have a dining room, but it's not a place I've ever thought about eating in at. The good news is their take out and delivery is typically pretty fast and PIPING hot. My only complaint, really, is that I've gone in to pick up or place an order and stood helplessly by while the employee holding down the front prioritized the ringing phone for call after call (somehow still not managing to pick up when I call, though!). For the most part this hasn't been a huge recurring issue; seems to depend on who's working at the time. Barely worth mentioning, but a few times I've wound up with two or three other customers all waiting to be acknowledged as our food cooled on the counter. I also appreciate how customizable the food can be when ordered online. The other day I subbed lo mein for rice in a dish and added extra mushrooms to another (both for additional charges, of course). Our family placed an order through Door Dash on Christmas night. One order was sweet and sour chicken that arrived with no sweet and sour sauce. One order of mushi pork arrived with no hoisin sauce and the extra cost for fried rice $3 resulted in no fried rice. We paid $100 for dinner and tipped at 18%. The food was mediocre at best with no flavor to speak of. When I called Hunan Cafe the manager said they were very busy and were sorry but there was nothing she could do, suggesting I call Door Dash. Manager was less than helpful and was considerably rude. Door Dash did offer a $12 refund but it really didn't begin to make up for the cost for such a poorly executed meal, and on Christmas night made it worse. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. There are many good Asian restaurants in Centreville. Hunan Cafe is not one of them. read more

My wife and I visited Hunan for the first time in over twenty years of living in the area. I guess we don't eat Chinese food that often. We ordered beef and broccoli, chicken lo mein, brown rice, wonton soup and egg rolls. With the exception of the egg rolls, all the portions were huge and easy to share between two or three people. The egg rolls seemed tiny to me and I would have liked a second one but we split the order of two. My wife had the soup and loved it. The lo mein was also excellent with the beef and broccoli coming in a close third. The big disappointed was the brown rice that was incredibly dry like it had been made a day or two in advance. We ordered food from here a few weeks ago for the first time and again two nights ago. The first was excellent, but two nights ago it was not edible. The first time we got egg foo young, roast pork, chicken lo mein and it was all excellent. Two nights ago we got chicken lo mein, Szechuan beef, chicken fried rice, and egg drop soup. The only thing edible was the egg drop soup. The Szechuan beef was soupy with jalapeños instead of Szechuan peppers, the fried rice had zero flavor and the chicken lo mein seemed old and tasted like burnt oil. It's been about 6 months since I've had food from this establishment and my review this time is better. My daughter ordered the General Tso's chicken while I had the vegetable egg foo young with fried rice. We also got an order of the beef egg rolls which was really good. The fried rice was excellent. It was perfectly fried. The egg food Young was also delicious. The only thing I did not like is the gravy that comes with the egg foo young.
