A friend saw this place on the food network and one lunchtime we decided to drop in and give it a go. We arrived at about 1:15pm, not realising the place closed at 1:30 but were very warmly welcomed by the Chef, and felt that he was genuinely pleased to see us, unlike some places where they'd be glad to be close to closing! Onto the food - we ordered a surprise for 2, and what a surprise! - a HUGE platter arrived at our table, easily enough food for 4 or more people - sausages, gyro, veggies, rice, bread, kebabs (I'm sure i'm missing something) this thing was absolutly loaded. All the food was delicious, this place has easily jumped to being on of my favorite places here in Tucson. We had a great chat with the chef and some other customers, he was incredibly warm and welcoming and you can tell he absolutly loves his work, and loves his customers (and he's worked extremely hard to get to where he is now). My fiancée Santi T and I saw this Bosnian restaurant on the road and decided to stop by to grab an early lunch. As the first to arrive, the purple and white interior was well organized, with plenty of sunlight coming through the windows. The captivating décor included ceiling fans, Bosnian paintings, and squared-shaped tables that spread across the white tiled floors. The Cevapi ($10.50) came with 10 pieces of kebob sausages, chopped onions, sour cream, and warm flat bread. The beef sausages were a bit over salted, but moist, and came with a good bite with a garlicky endnote. The salted flavors intermingled nicely with the sharp onions, and the smooth sour cream rounded out the taste buds with the soft and crispy flat bread to give textures. My favorite item during the visit was the Sarma ($13). The ground beef was nicely seasoned wrapped with sweet cabbage and sauerkraut. The seasoned rice was cooked with olive oil, butter, vegetables, salt, pepper, and was addictive and outright delicious. I would love to order this dish again. During the meal Chef Alisah was very gracious to emerge from the kitchen to greet us. He also brought us a plate of Piletina U Sosu Od Gljiva to sample on the house. The chicken breasts were covered with homemade mushroom sauce. The chicken was moist and tender. On the other hand, the mushroom sauce was too salty for me but delicious when dipped with the remaining bread at the table. The hospitality was genuine. The same could be said about the service that was friendly and efficient. Although this was not the best Bosnian restaurant that I had experienced, it was still a memorable meal nonetheless. The overall experience was positive but the rating has much more to do with their dishes being over-priced compared to others of the same cuisine. WOW. I can't believe I waited this long to go to Chef Alisah. What a great way to kick-off Yelp International Supper Club, accompanied by a fabulous group of Yelpers and tremendously flavorful and heartwarming food. This family owned joint is probably as good as it gets in Tucson. While the owners are Bosnian, the menu draws from various Eastern European countries. I'm not too familiar with this type of cuisine, but you don't have to be in order to know good flavor. The food was downright delicious. I ordered some appetizers to share with the group including the Bosnian Style Tzatziki & Avjar (vegetable spread, a lot like a veggie hummus) with homemade bread, and the Stuffed Grape leaves (exactly like dolmades, with less of a vinegar bite). Both were delightful but very garlicky for my sensitive buds. The homemade bread is officially on my top faves of homemade bread in Tucson. Every other Wednesday they offer the Chef's lamb special, which must be ordered in advance. Our dinner happened to coincide with the lamb special, so I preordered as my dinner. I'd been hearing about it for almost two years, so there was no way I could pass it up. For $17, the portion was extremely generous; a piece of roast with a plateful of lamb chops, roasted slice potatoes, salad and homemade bread. The salad was cabbage dressed in olive oil, salt, pepper and some sort of vinegar or lemon. I love anything tangy, so this hit the spot! I had enough leftovers to feed two more people. At this point, I'm feeling a little ripped off by many Tucson establishments that charge $18 for a piece of steak and french fries, when I had delectable lamb feast here! I also ordered the kids portion of Cevapi to share with others in the group. The Cevapi are Bosnian sausages made fresh in house! Served sandwich style, in between two sliced of toasted and buttered homemade bread. The 5 sausage portion seems like a perfectly normal adult sized portion, but not here! The adult sized plate comes with either 10 or 15 sausages, unbelievable! Aaron, our fellow yelper, braved it and ate the entire 10 sausage meal. Bravo! Others at the table ordered menu items that had my mouthwatering. Needless to say, I'll be back for my own portion of the Bosnian Style kebab, chicken with mushroom sauce, and the Bosnian goulash. Just when we thought we were stuffed beyond belief, Chef Alisah came out to the table and served us an enormous plate of a special stew he made for his family. This was not a menu item, so I have no name to give. This was the true heartwarming part of the meal, not just because Chef Alisah so generously shared this plate with us, but because the dish itself was one of the finest stews I've ever tasted. Beef, green beans and various other veggies were detectable. It reminded me of a cold Winter's day. I wish it was on the menu! Then, he came out with a platter of handmade fruit desserts. He gave us each our own portion to taste. They were much like fig newton balls. Tasty and quite healthy. Dinner wouldn't be complete without dessert. I was heartbroken to hear that their famous Baklava was sold out. So we tried the baklava style shortbread. It was decadent and a very good preview to what the Baklava will taste like when I go back! Chef's wife makes the baklava by hand; phyllo dough included. She brought out a batch fresh out of the oven to show us her work. It was beautiful and I can already tell it's the best in town. Food aside, the entire experience at Chef Alisah was memorable. The service was kind and attentive, the food is incredible and super reasonable, and most importantly, the family is deeply passionate about what they; you can taste it in every bite and see it as they interact with all of their customers. Dear Tucson Food Critics, With all do respect, Chef Alisah deserves to be mentioned as one of the best places in town. Personally, I never had Bosnian food and thanks to Yelp, I came across this restaurant accidentally from just browsing around. Chef Alisah was picked as the first place to visit as my fellow friends and I do our regular weekly food hopping. We were all introduced not only to Bosnian flavorful cuisine, but as well as the wonderful culture. As we arrived on a Wednesday, roughly 7:30pm, there were a few occupied tables. We were greeted with our waitress's warm and welcoming smile. The restaurant is clearly family owned and operated as the chef himself and his family hung out around the restaurant with their fellow customers. Chef Alisah is a very casual and down to earth place. The restaurant is barely decorated with limited numbers of outdoor seating. As all four of us struggled with the unfamiliar menu items, the waitress was very kind to walk us through one-by-one along with her helpful recommendations. We eventually made our final decision with Gulas, Chef's Special: Chicken Breast Sandwich, Pljeskavica Punjena Sa Sirom, and Cevapi. While waiting for our food, our eyes curiously followed those good-looking dishes as they get served to destinated tables. When she is not serving food, the waitress kept our glasses filled while keeping us entertained with the background of the country of Bosnia and the food culture. Finally, our entrees were places in front of us, one after another. I ordered Chef's Special: Cheicken Breast Sandwich. The portion was enormous and can easily feed two human beings, maybe three. The first bite and every single bite after that were heavenly. The bread was fresh, soft with a little crunchiness - Fantastic...and don't let me get started on the chicken with mushroom, onion, and bell pepper. It was SO good, time stopped. I had to be good and disciplined since we wanted to experience the whole dang deal. We ordered some desert to share, which were Tufahija, pudding, and Hurmasica, glazed cookie, with of course Turkish coffee that was served in little golden cup. The two deserts were fantastic. I liked Tufahija more than Hurmasica. The coffee was strong and excellent. Overall, Chef Alisah is definitely a top-notch restaurant with scrumptious food and outstanding service. Not to mention the whole four entrees, two deserts, three coffees come out to about ~$60. Bottom-line: Cheap, flawlessly delicious food, excellent service. I couldn't ask for more. A group of Yelper's dined here for UYE International Supper Club and Chef Alisah's family took amazing care of us! Literally, his son was waiting on us, Alisah was cooking for us, he came out to the table three times to bring us surprise menu items that we did not order, one of which was what he cooked his family for dinner that evening and his wife showed us her infamous baklava that was prepping for the next day and a huge batch of frozen Bosnian sausages that you can purchase for your home. FYI- the baklava sells out! Sooo, if you want some, get there early! You could tell that Chef Alisah LOVES Yelp as he blew up a Yelp sign in the front window. To start we split the Tzatzki (sour cream, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, salt, vinegar) and Avjar (brilliant red veggie spread with bell pepper, onion, eggplant, tomatoes, salt, pepper) served with bread. Now I love few things more than Fare la scarpetta (mopping up sauce with bread) and I was not disappointed. Some shared the Bosnian style salad, which was tomatoes, cucumbers, sheep's milk cheese-no lettuce. Bella and I split a ridiculously large kiddie Cavapi (Bosnian Sausage sandwich)....seriously 5 sausages on the *kid's* sammie and it was grrrreat! I loved the toasty bread. I ordered the chicken with mushroom sauce and it was a definite re-order, as in I will be back for more. Perfect small cubes of chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce served with butter rice, cabbage salad and bread. This ain't your mama's goulash either, no limp noodles, it is hearty, rich and served over rice. The food here reminds me of Bosnian comfort food perfect for a winter's day...however, it is still super tasty in the desert heat. Perhaps a perfect Monsoon edible. Since they were out of the baklavah, he brought us out the fruit balls...basically date, apricot, a variety of dried fruit rolled in coconut...but after all the apps, my dinner, the surprise dinner (which he made because his son is a picky eater), and free desert I was stuffed! This was my first Bosnian experience but not my last. I was so impressed at the family run operation, that they cherish. Delicious food in a friendly atmosphere. I love that a small local restaurant that serves such unique food is so highly rated on Yelp.... and for good reason too! I had been wanting to try Chef Alisah's Restaurant for a while but it is far from me so it took a while to find the right occasion. I took my dad here for a belated Father's day meal because he has spent a lot of time in Bosnia and I figured he would enjoy the trip down memory lane. As soon as we walked in and he smelled the food and saw the big plates of sausages he said "I feel like I'm back in Sarajevo!" Our meal was off to a good start. We did make reservations which I would recommend just to be safe because it is a small restaurant. We started with the Tzatziki & Ajvar which was delicious and quite large. We also both really enjoyed the simple cabbage salad served before the meal. My dad ordered the ćevapi and I got a chicken and mushroom dish. Both were perfect. My dad personally didn't like the bread served with his sausages but I thought it was great. He said he is used to a plain pita with it but was happy it was served with more Tzatziki and fresh raw onions. My dish was so filling I took half of it home along with a piece of baklava to munch on later. I was surprised by how light and soft the baklava was... I should have ordered more than one piece. Chef Alisah's is a hidden gem sort of a place. First off, the place is 100% halal and the owner prides himself of not serving alcohol in his restaurant. They've been open for 6 years and doing well per the owner. My husband wanted to order the Chef Alisah's surprise for 2 dish. Yeah, the surprise is that the dish could feed like 6 people! 6 totally carnivorous people! We received our very large platter of food which consisted of tons of different things that are found in the menu. From gyro meat to kabobs to sausages and stuffed grape leaves to rice and veggies. It's all there. The food was undoubtedly very delicious but in all honesty, much food went to waste. Because we were staying at a hotel and didn't have a microwave, much uneaten food went to waste. Next time, we plan on asking them if we can have half the order even though we pay the same price. I felt so guilty wasting the food because not only is it good but it's also of high quality. As a five year resident of Tucson and being from Southern Florida, i'm always looking for a new restaurant to try. We are fans of Guy Fieri and "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" on Food Network, so when we saw the episode with Chef Alisah we just had to go there. We actually went for lunch the next day after seeing the episode. The Chef was such a character and seemed so inviting on the episode that when he was standing inside the door when we walked in with a big hello was a great start! I told him I had just watched his episode last night and if they were open that late I would have been here last night. We sat down at a table in an empty lunch time during the week and had very personal service from the Chef and his wife. They started us with the vegetable and tzatziki sauce with fresh bread to dip it in. Wow. The vegetable sauce was fresh and fragrant and the tzatziki was honestly the best version of this sauce i've ever had. The flavor was incredible. He recommended his favorite dishes, the goulash (featured on the DDD show) and the Chicken in Paprika Sauce (not on the show), and the stuffed cabbage. We ordered all three. All three were phenomenal with tender/melt in your mouth meat and delicious sauce. Both were served with butter rice and fresh bread. I had talked about the Bosnian Sausage dish that was on the episode and although he steered me away from it, he brought a plate of it "on the house" so we could try it. Fresh handmade beef sausage with homemade pita type bread, onion and tzatziki sauce. Delicious (but I'm glad I trusted him, the sausage was good but the chicken Paprika and Cabbage Rolls were that much better. The Chef and his wife checked on us numerous times, told us stories about how they got started, the experience of being on DDD, etc. We felt like royalty being treated so kindly. We honestly felt like we had met a celebrity chef and were having a personal meal prepared by him (which we were). An impressive mountain of chicken, Bosnian sausage, kibbe, gyro meat, and some incredible cheesy sausage covering bread and 2 types of rice, smothered in cheese and broccoli, with a side of tzaziki. I LOVE THIS PLACE! This is the BEST restaurant I have ever been too! I have never felt that way before or said that, but everything was wonderful the restaurant is family owned and run, and they are such friendly, nice, and welcoming people. It was as if we were eating in their home. Who doesn't love a home cooked meal! The price is right and the food is even better! My husband and I got the Mjesano Meso-Mixed grill for two because we couldn't decide (everything looks so great!) My favorites-Bosnian Sausage-their homemade bread is to die for you can't miss it!-Their TATZIKI!, this is the only thing I would change about our meal it was so delicious my husband ate it ALL before I got to it ok I got a little bit and that was the best tatziki I have ever had!-steak-chicken-rice,Okay i'm not going to lie I LOVED it all :) My husbands-the bread(He hates bread but it was so good he ate two pieces)-The steak, so much so that when I finished mine he accused me of stealing his haha-the tatziki!!!!- and the chicken. I love this place, it looks like someone exploded a purple can or many cans of paint all over the walls, tables and anything else that can be hit. The combination of the purple and the bright bare bulbs provide the ambiance of Eastern Europian/Russian satellite countries of the cold war ( It's like traveling without leaving the country). We had the Goulash and the Sausages on the big bun, split them. The food right there what I want like Mama is right in the back preparing the food with love (not my mom if did not come out of a can it wasn't getting fixed). The owners are very social and will frequently check in on customers themselves in between the waiters visits. I had the Chicken in Paprika sauce which was great. Next visit I must try the sausage dish they serve, because that seemed to be people's favorite the night I was there. It is important to note that this restaurant does not serve alcohol, however you can bring your own I was told by the staff. It got the 15 (breakfast sized) sausages with Tzatziki sauce and raw onions. The ajvar (vegetable spread) was OK, put plain. The waiter said they did not have mustard or ketchup. My wife got the lamb shank special, which was dry. A friend got the grilled eggplant, which was plain, but she and my wife liked it. The cabbage salad was good, but it needed a touch of sweetness to tamp down the tartness. Super clean, the owners are very friendly and obviously take huge pride in what they do! Nice neighborhood Bosnian restaurant , Chef appeared to be owner and waitress wife. Never tried Bosnian food but I believe it's more similar to Hungarian than middle eastern. We had goulash and meatballs. Both were tender meats cooked perfect but we both agreed meatballs were tastier. We'd never had goulash served with rice rather than noodles it was good but not great, seemed to lack flavor . We went on a Sunday afternoon for lunch after reading on the place on Yelp. The idea of Bosnian cuisine was absolutely too tempting to pass on! Chef Alisah's is in an old converted hotel/motel/holiday inn type of building that has been converted into office space. If I was to venture a guess, the restaurant itself sits in the old lobby and continental breakfast nook...but totally guessing. Nonetheless, they've done a pretty decent job creating a welcoming dinning environment. Lots of pictures and memorabilia of B-H. For lunch we shared a plate of gulas and a plate of sarma...both were clearly fresh and very enjoyable. I thought the tomato puree on the sarma plate could have used a little pizzaz as it was rather bland. The sarma themselves were very enjoyable and seasoned very nicely. The beef in the gulas was extremely tender and had been cooked to perfection. The sauce itself was also just slightly bland, but nonetheless enjoyable. It reminded me of my mom's goulash when I was young...just darn good and hearty home cooking. The rice accompanying both dishes was enjoyably seasoned and almost seemed more like couscous than rice. For desert we had several slices of baklava and it was perfect to wash down the meal! We were also very fortunate to have catch the place around closing for lunch, and the owner shared some of the lunch he had made for himself and his wife. We never caught the name of the dish, but he did mention it isn't on the menu. It was a cream of mushroom stew with beef and let me tell you what...it was amazing! The meat was once again extremely tender...it just fell apart in your mouth but wasn't lacking in plenty of flavor still. The earthy tones of the mushrooms were divine. The dish was unexpected and absolutely to die for! This is a place we will definitely be back to again...just kinda bummed it took us so long to find it in the first place. Still loving it! Tried yet another new dish tonight, and it was fantastic. I won't even bother to attempt to describe the food. It is good beyond mere words. My friend said today that she always feels happy when she eats here, and I agree. It just puts a smile on your face. Chef Alisah, his family and staff are such gracious hosts. When things quiet down in the kitchen Chef Alisah makes a point to greet his guests. If you like good, strong coffee then give the Bosnian coffee a try. It's like espresso on steroids. 3-star food. But... 5-star service! This place is very understated in its decor - definitely not pretentious and feels a bit like a cross between a cafeteria-style and sit-down restaurant. Definitely casual. When we arrived the Chef was chillin' outside. We'd never eaten here before and our waiter was super helpful (even though he was young and new - he really gave us great guidance and was very personable! It was clear he wanted to do a great job). We wanted to try a bunch of different items on the menu and ended up ordering the following (for 2 people - the first 3 items are appetizers): 1. ŠOPSKA SALATA-BOSNIAN STYLE SALAD (3-stars) 2. BOSNIAN STYLE TZATZIKI AND AJVAR (VEGETABLE SPREAD) (3-stars) 3. SARMA U JAPRAKU-STUFFED GRAPE LEAVES (4-stars) 4. .GRILLED CHICKEN BREASTS (3-stars) During our visit, the Chef hand-delivered every person's order to their table. It was clear he genuinely cared how we felt about our food. At the end of our meal, he told us we should order the Chef Alisha's Surprise Plate next time... We picked the items we did because we don't eat red meat. The truth is that the chicken was good but a bit bland and nothing really special (thus, the 3-stars). However, from what our waiter told us - the real winner at this restaurant is the Beef Goloush (the dish made famous by "Diner's, Drive-In's, and Dives"). Everything we ate that was more traditional to the restaurant was good - like the stuffed grape leaves and the tzatziki. So in summary: Excellent service, but only go here if you're willing to truly try the authentic Bosnian dishes (i.e. you eat red meat). Their other food is a bit bland... However, we liked it because it felt healthy (i.e. wasn't over sauced, greasy, etc.). But... we wouldn't necessarily go back any time soon because I can make healthy bland food on my own. This is sadly why I can't give more than 3-stars even though I want to support them. read more
