The name "Bricín" is Irish for "little trout" and is also the name of a stone bridge in Killarney National Park. The restaurant was established by the McGuire brothers, who restored the building with antique timber and stained glass. The restaurant is upstairs from a gift shop that I believe the owners also operate. We had made reservations and once upstairs, we were personally greeted and welcomed by maybe one of the brothers. Mary was our wait person for the evening, who we found to be warm, friendly, and attentive. We were also seated at a nice corner table (#14) that allowed the right amount of dining privacy with a very attractive room. Bricín offers a fixed price meal (appetizer, main, and dessert) for 46 Euro and an "Early Bird" special for 34 Euros. We opted to order off the Menu as follows: - Hake and Salmon Gratin (Fern) - Boxty (House Specialty) - Traditional Irish potato pancake, cooked on the griddle with mixed salad and a choice of meat (Don) - Rack of Kerry Lamb (Gayle Loves Lamb!) - Thai Red Chicken Curry with Thai jasmine rice (Eric) - Adult Beverages (Wines) - Spanish Rueda (White), Pinot Grigio, Siegel Reserva (Chilean Merlot), and another Merlot. - Split 2 Desserts (One Special) plus teas and coffee. It was all a wonderful dining experience, when food, atmosphere, service, and good company all become greater than the sum of its parts. The upstairs restaurant is decorated with antique furniture and scenic paintings that make it feel like you've stepped into a charming old inn. I tried a boxy for the first time and would describe it to an American as a thin potato pancake with chicken pot pie filling. The scallion and leek tart was noteworthy, but the rack of lamb could have been a bit more tender. The servers were friendly and accommodating, even offering to hang our raincoats and umbrellas in the side nook and fetch them when the service was over.

Cronins sits on a Main Street through Killarney and feels like old world Ireland from the road to the table. It has a storied past in Killarney, being open over 60 years at this point. The space is as you would expect, cozy, local and welcoming. The menu is rooted in local ingredients including seafood, beef and veggies. We popped in for an early dinner and had an appetizer of the Smoked Irish Salmon, which was fresher than expected. Such a simple dish, but it was executed perfectly. For our mains, we had a burger and the Shepard's Pie. Burger was good. It was juicy, well cooked and the onion relish thing they had going on was *chefs kiss*. The Shepard's Pie was spot on. Both were made with local beef, which was cool and extra tasty! Beyond the food, Cronins also has their own cider, which was phenomenal and oddly enough, the only cider I had the whole time I was in Ireland! That speaks more to the hold Guinness had on me and less to the variety of cider. After the cider, we went with a few house cocktails including the Clover Club and Dingle Donkey. Both were well prepared, vibrant and tasty! Service was uniquely local, friendly and fun! From the bartender to our server, they were both excellent! On our second night in town, we were after an early dinner as we had plans at another local pub later in the evening. After a stroll around town, Mad Monk was the spot! Apparently Quinlan's is a small chain with several spots around Ireland, and after popping in, we can tell why. The thing that stood out the most for us at Mad Monk was the freshness of all the goods, specifically the seafood. We all started with a white seafood chowder filled with seafood, mussels,shrimp, and white fish. It was the best chowder we had in Ireland and rivaled Bostons best. The pastry crust extended to the sides and bottom so it fully enclosed the filling and was served "freestanding". Crust and gravy were excellent. In the filling, both the steak and the kidneys were plentiful. My research completed, I probably wouldn't order it again; just give me the steak - no more kidneys please! Nevertheless I did enjoy and finished it. This was served with decent fries and a truly excellent green salad: a variety of leafy greens, radishes, cucumbers, pickled onions, and pre-dressed with a vinaigrette. The wife had the Beef & Guinness Casserole, served with brown bread. Along with steak there were also plentiful veggies (root vegetables and celery) and mashed potatoes in the center. She liked it. I tried it and agreed. I would get that next time. I had a Jameson Old Fashioned to drink and it was the best Old Fashioned I've had in some time. The unusually large twisted orange peel probably contributed and it may have had more than the customary amount of bitters. The wife's tea was amusingly served with a knitted "cozy" keeping the teapot hot. For dessert we shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with vanilla ice cream, attractively presented with a dusting of sugar, whipped cream, and a ground cherry complete with its leaves. I'd rate it second among the three I've tried so far. Would certainly order it again. As for the pub I can't say. It has a reputation for good traditional Irish music every night but unfortunately not until 9:30, way too late for us. Sadly we're just not pub people.

The antipasto is very tasty and highly recommended. The frutta di mare dish was alittle disappointing it lacked flavor and the prawns and mussels were small, considering it was the highest cost item on the menu they can use larger ingredients. We had a group of 12 and the place was not that busy during dinner, we asked the waitress if the chef can come out and see us so we could complement some of his dishes and she comes back saying we can stop by the kitchen on our way out! Really! We probably spent the most money that evening. Sounds like the owner chef needs some training in restaurant hospitality and the waitress lost an opportunity for a 20% tip. This is what happens when tips are not part of their compensation in Ireland. Anyway good food for sure.
